My husband is showing signs of early cognitive decline. Since I decluttered and simplified our kitchen with Dawn's help, he finds it much easier to participate in cooking, tidying up, emptying the dishwasher, and putting things away. And, since the kitchen is so easy to maintain now, even if he puts something away in the wrong place, I can still find it! 🙂

I have a friend with a 93 year old mother living with her who has probably almost end stage dementia. My friend has several serious physical issues too but her primary problem is that she cannot declutter after a lifetine of accumulating stuff. She just doesn't want to let go of anything. I would be happy to help but can't push her as it's her decision, not mine. I just hate how cluttered and disorganized her home is. It's borderline hoarding. I'm not a real minimalist like Dawn but I don't tolerate clutter and I believe everything should have a place and I am a labeling freak for all my storage. I don't want to waste any time hunting for things.

Best of luck to your friend as she navigates caring for her Mom and to you finding your way to show support.

My husband has worked so hard for every single thing he has! I have been slowly getting rid of the destroyed, the dry rotted, and down scaling my things. I used to say I can only organize 3 things. Yes, the same here, but now improving. The missing point was "purpose". I couldn't create at home what I have at work (order and organisation, and purpose of the place), because I didn't define the purpose of my rooms, desk space, shelves. (Thanks, Dana K. White) Once I did that the improvement began. I'm so happy.

    1) never leave a room empty handed. So if you’re going upstairs anyway, grab the clean laundry; if you’re going downstairs, bring the restroom trash down, etc.
    2) you can use your hands and your mouth at the same time. Lol. Side benefit, wiping counters and tidying doesn’t feel like work if it’s just done absent mindedly while socializing (or listening to Dawn on RUclips). 😄

Me and my husband have been raising three boys (now 21, 19 and 14 y old) and I CAN NOT TELL YOU what a difference it has made simplifying our kitchen. My husband was already a frequent 'chef' in our household, but all three of the boys are now cooking as well. I am 100 percent certain that the fact that the pots and pans are simplified, that everything has its destined spot (even the food is stored in categories in the fridge, freezer and pantry), that everything is easy to find and easy to put away - has made the kitchen easy for them to approach to begin with. Not to mention easy to clean after using the kitchen. This has saved the family so much time, so many potential conflicts, so much energy - and brought us so much joy and so many cooking skills for our boys. I love your videos - thank you for the inspiration.

My husband loves to cook, I try to keep things to a minimum and everything has a place, but he never puts things back where he found them 🤦🤦🤦🤦, so I then end up spending my time tracking down stuff. He is incapable of keeping things in the same place every time, with the rare exception of his fishing gear, that is well organized. I hope that the males in your household are naturally inclined to be organized.

    • @JamieM470
      @JamieM470 2 месяца назад +2

@@anaalves3658 I feel your pain lol. He has a different organizing style than I do, so I make things super, super easy to put away--like hooks, open bins without lids, clear labels, very highly simplified drawers & cabinets, and everything stored within arm's reach of where it's used.
He won't do it. He just drops everything on the counter. It's easier than hanging it back on its hook or opening a drawer or cabinet.
And any dirty dishes and utensils are left on the counter right where they were used. Sigh.
On the bright side, it's much easier to clean up the messes than it used to be when it was cluttered 🙂

The process is not always easy, especially when life gets very difficult, but the ends are so worth it! I took a brief minute to look at your kitchen efficiency checklist and it is spot on. We are in the throws of a kitchen remodel and many of these factors were top of our mind when we designed it.
Years ago, when we lived in Credit River Township, MN we homeschooled our four children. They each had a task to do each day. One would put the ingredients in the bread maker to make bread for lunch; they had to know where each ingredient was. Then they each made their own breakfast and lunch. One child made supper, cleaned up after the meal including doing dishes with me. Our kitchen had to be streamlined. It was a little work to set up with but well worth it. Our daughter who will be 30 next month said her fondest memories are of making suppers and washing dishes with me.

Such adorable new kitchen staff and health inspector ! Someone else made a great point that even if family members put items away in the wrong place, they’re still easy to find in a highly simplified kitchen. I like mine to be as pared down as a kitchen in a vacation rental. Dawn, you’ve been instrumental in our home becoming progressively more streamlined and calming. I’m 56 and wish I knew all this when we started out, but grateful to have implemented it now. It will make all the difference going forward, and our home won’t be a burden to our kids later.

The diner analogy is great - a good restaurant tends to specialize in one cuisine using a limited range of ingredients, a place that serves Indian and Middle Eastern and Italian food probably isn’t going to do any of it well. I get almost all of my recipes from the same site, Budget Bytes, and find that they use the same spices and sauces a lot. I actually use up my spices regularly now! I’d rather go out to eat “exotic” foods since it will probably be better anyway, and I don’t have to keep spices for all the flavors of the world in my pantry.

This made me smile. When my children were young, their dad traveled all week, which meant we were eating at home. My children made their own menu's and they also decorated them ( I laminated them) They had to include veggies and they each planned two dinner meals. It worked out great as we usually had leftovers the last night (or home made pizza) My daughter wanted "chicken with lines....aka grilled" and my son would want hot dogs or fish, so we would have buns for the dogs & fish sticks. We never had an issue including veggies. And something we also did was use the refrigerator compartments (door) for condiments and anything we needed to sort. ( Breakfast compartment, snacks, condiments, ect) Dawn you are so talented and have the cutest health inspector ever ! Thanks for the printable~ Nanna Wanda in Charleston, SC

My husband and I have been majorly decluttering our house since the beginning of 2024. The kitchen was my first goal to simplify. It's so much more efficient and easy to cook and easy to clean up in there now! I'm still finding little ways of improving it further. Today I ordered a garbage bag holder to hang inside one of the lower cabinet doors. I will be using that instead of the garbage can which has been sitting out in my tiny kitchen for all these years. My kitchen is 9'x10', wall to wall, so that includes all the cabinets so my floor space is far smaller than that. I don't have an inch to spare! But I love my little kitchen. It's very few steps from everything to everything. At the same time I do need to find every way possible to maximize the floor space and getting rid of the garbage can is going to be a very exciting improvement! Thanks Dawn for all your inspiration. I come to watch your videos almost every day. You always have fresh ideas and I love your presentations! Keep up the great work!!

Without a pantry, basement, or garage we’ve winnowed down our appliances to the point of ultimate efficiency making room in the cabinets for food and storage. It took the eminent arrival of baby number 5 to push me over the edge towards decluttered freedom. As I wiped down the counter after cooking a quick dinner tonight, all I could think was how thankful I am for your encouragement over the years. Looking forward to welcoming baby with a kitchen that functions well enough for my husband and daughters to cook in! Aloha from our soon to be ‘ohana of seven in a tiny apartment in Hawai’i 🤙🏽🌺

LOVE those! My dream kitchen! Many of them had drawers instead of lower cabinets, and the upper cabinets went all the way to the ceiling!
No dead space on top of upper cabinets to collect dust and grease. (Many these days are built with a tiny gap so you can't even get to it to clean it!)
My very favorite is the ranges they had. Beautiful works of art, easy to clean, and up on legs so you can clean UNDERNEATH them! SO much better than modern ranges that have--again--a tiny little gap to let in dust and grease (and cat toys), but not enough room to get under it to clean it.
50's kitchens were amazingly functional and efficient. Kitchens have literally de-evolved since then.

Thanks to you and Cas Clutterbug I'm well on my way to getting my house decluttered. The advice to start with a drawer or some other small space and allow one minute was what got me in gear. I've completed the major areas that I postponed because they were the worst and what an accomplishment! I've trashed, donated, and started giving my kids what they want, and what an amazing difference when you let things go! Rooms that are done are so easy to clean! THANK YOU!

This is so true. I was recently very ill for two weeks with the flu (and it was 36 degrees C for three days in a day row on top of that) - luckily my parents were visiting and looked after the kids. I didn't have to do anything to help them find stuff in the kitchen or really anywhere in the house because we decluttered and organized after moving in here a few months ago.
I was so grateful to my past self because I could rest, without interruptions, while my family took care of themselves. Never underestimate the power of taking your own brain out of the equation by simplifying things for others!

One of the things that helps me is to keep a pre-printed checklist for grocery that I can check off as I run out of things. Then when I go to the store, I just have to grab the list. Whenever I go through the pantry to check for outdated food, I write down things we are getting low on.

I didn’t even realize, until a I watched this video, that I haven’t reached for a snack or sweet in two weeks. I committed to keeping our kitchen clean, clear and tidy and I’ve kept it up for two weeks! I completely agree that I reach for sugar when I’m in a messy kitchen or as a “reward” for power cleaning. But now that I’ve highly simplified and keep it maintained, I don’t even think about it. Thank you Dawn for all you do, as a mom of 5, simplifying is saving my sanity and my motherhood!

I can’t believe it. I’m so surprised! I cleared my counters and I set a record - 4 home cooked dinners in a row pretty much stress-free.
I only put away in cupboards the honey, 2 small salt canisters, a pretty jar of utensils, a spoon rest, notepad, and a jar of pens, supplements I take every day and the butter dish. I really thought those things made my life easier because they were available they were distracting me and making it harder to clear my counter. To make room in the cupboards : decluttered 15 mugs/ have 40 plus left, 10 -12 plates each small med large, have 8 left of each size of the dishes we love and about 10 mismatched wine, margarita and martini glasses we never use! Saving these things for “maybe later” was making it much harder for me to do what I value ❤ feed my family and enjoy meals at home 😮😢! What a great experience this was 🎉😊❤

I love this way of looking at your kitchen! I used to run a catering business out of my home. You had to be very careful with sanitation. Anything on the counters needed to be fully wiped down every time you started to work. Also every inch of counter space was of value for prepping and packaging. Because of this we had hardly anything on our counters. No microwave, toaster, fruit bowel... it was beautiful and streamlined. As you can imagine the fridge was amazing and streamlined too.

I hushed my kitchen yesterday and it feels so nice waking up to it walking in a 5am! Today I’m ruthlessly decluttering as much as I can! (I had a time slot come open from work) Our current living arrangement is quite complex in this season, we have our daughter’s family of 6 living with us going on 4 months now while house hunting. Even more complex is the fact that we live in the back of our downtown business. It has 2 small studio kitchens so we have our own space. My husband is remodeling the loft apartment upstairs that he and I will move into eventually so I want it to be efficient and minimal because we are super busy people. When my daughter moves out we will probably rent out the back as some sort of office space. Love your videos and I think you could have the most amazing little coffee shop!

Dawn! I so wish I could live close by to you so I could meet you in person and visit with you ! You are truly a friend online. ❤❤❤
our values and faith align so well.❤
Your kitchen idea is fabulous. What a wonderful analogy to compare our busy kitchens to an actual restaurant. I can hear myself saying to my kids,” I’m not a restaurant . you need at least try what me or your dad has made.” So yes, we are restaurants in a way ,aren’t we as mothers? I have four kiddos just like you, and it is a delight, but I absolutely know how hard meal planning and actually following through with keeping up with making dinner and lunches regularly is. I only just now (6 weeks ago) in my life started meal planning. It used to be such a daunting idea to me. I think I saw it as this big scary thing that would take so much energy. And really , do we have any extra energy in this season of our lives right now? No. But when I just sat down, got a little notebook out just for meal planning and did it with my morning coffee on Monday ,it became more of a rhythm. I found that I could make simple, easy things like pasta , or recipes I kind of was comfortable with to start (because I’m new at staying the course with repeats! ) or, frozen pizzas, sometimes it took the pressure off. I recently fell off the wagon for about two weeks when I hit a rough spot mentally, but I am back in it and it sure does take the pressure off 4-6pm everyday. That’s the last time of day you actually want to use any brain power to figure out what you have in your fridge to scrounge together. I honestly need more handholding when it comes to food prep. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just open our fridge and pull out the prepped dinner food when our brains are fried at night? That would be a cool thing to add into your kitchen utilization program!❤ I think it’s baby steps though for me. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing and when I am mentally able to handle that idea, I will add that in. I remember the first time I saw my friend prep dinner at 11 AM. We were having coffee. I was watching my baby crawl around on her floor and she said ,”don’t mind me. I’m just gonna start prepping for dinner. “ I looked at her like ,”what? “
Now I see the genius in that lol.❤❤

    Great tips.
The only time my worktops get a bit untidy is when I’ve been shopping. I don’t drive, so have to walk with my shopping trolley to the supermarket where I shop at. (Tesco)
My trolley is often really heavy & I’m shattered when I get home. I’m going to start setting a goal of putting it all away almost as soon as I get home.
I totally agree about the menu planning etc.
When I was a child my Mum worked & my Dad was on nightwork & cooked our tea. We would have the same things every week, like toad-in-the-hole on a Tuesday, shepherd’s pie on a Wednesday & liver & bacon on a Thursday & so on.
To some people this may sound boring but it made it so much easier for my Dad.
I liked the food inspector. He did a great job.
By the way, when I first saw the title of this video I thought it meant that you had a new job. 😀
You look great in blue, it really suits you. (That rhymes. 😀)
