- A New Yorker article argues that we are in "the gilded age of medicine." So what does that mean for U.S. health care? Dr. Dhruv Khullar, associate professor of health and economics at Weill Cornell Medical College and contributing writer at the New Yorker, joins "America Decides" to discuss his piece.

We have been in A Gilded Age for any business since Reagan.
Nixon is the one who met with Kaizer in a meeting to discuss the privatization of healthcare to benefit the wealthy.
Regan destroyed America!!! With the scam of neoliberalism!!
This is nonsense to blame Reagan for anything like this. This has been a problem since the beginning. An increasingly sickly population with more treatments available plus excessive government subsidization, it's no surprise the system is just asking to implode. Healthcare spending and Education have the same subsidization from the government and consequently have an identical inflation rate of around 7.5% annually.
Since LBJ

HMOs are not bad if done properly
Do you guys remember when Americans started going to Canada and Mexico for treatment and medication until the government closed that loophole? I wonder how much the insurance companies paid the U.S Government to do so?
complete evil
Or how much money they pumped into their election campaigns.
But people still do this. This isn't a loophole unless you're talking about purchasing medication and having it shipped specifically because yes they disallowed that. You can still get medication pretty discounted in the USA if you price shop using Goodrx.
A lot.
This is one of the several reasons I said "eff it" and moved to Colombia in 2022
Private equity destroys everything it touches.
nope, it creates wealth for the stakeholders, so not everything
Profits before people, profits before humanity, profits before everything. The unprecedented level of wealth inequality we have today in the US is at the root of so many problems.
Socialism and big government is far worse.
@@neverendingstudentPeople forget all that wealth has to come from somewhere. Their money is being earned from us funneling money upwards.

We need Medicare-For-All/a universal healthcare system in The United States! What's more "pro-life" then ensuring everyone living here has guaranteed affordable healthcare regardless of their job? If we all have access to healthcare, we would have the "freedom" to live long lives without having to worry about medical bankruptcies. Taxes will go up, but overall medical bills will go down. If some of us need additional healthcare, then we have the "choice" to acquire private insurance. If every other developed country (Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Israel, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, & New Zealand) can implement this system & save money, then why can't The United States do the same to help "Make America Great Again" for everyone when it comes to healthcare? Finally, if people in The United States die from a lack of access to affordable health insurance then we are failing our country's promise of defending "life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness" for its citizens as well as "promoting the general welfare" of everyone living here.
THANK YOU OBAMA FOR MAKING HEALTHCARE AFFORDABLE!!!!
If Democrats really cared, they would have done something right away. Obamacare was a bandaid that over promised. In 2020 millions of eligible people, including children, were taken off Medicaid because they were trying to thin their pool of who got helped. Those people all left without insurance for over a year for clerical reasons.
Oh my God, and can you imagine fining someone for not having health insurance?! You tell me that is for the greater good of the people and not the insurance providers. Deplorable and disgusting.
@@teamginger9134thank you Obama for making it a finable offense to not have health insurance
@@nerdluvsyttik4evah there are no fines with single payer. You have the coverage. You don’t need to opt in like with the half measure of the ACA.

Not just healthcare- our entire economy and society
It's not just healthcare, it's the whole economy!
This!!! 💯💯💯
True. But healthcare is the worst part of our economy. The country is in a new guilded age. Maybe on the low ends of society meritocracy still exists. But above a certain threshold it's an evil corporatocracy. AND WE ARE TIRED OF IT! The biggest take away from the last week is that vigilatism works. It's highly effective. This has moved the conversation on healthcare in this country forward by decades. Much more than decades of useless voting has
No lies detected......
The insurance and pharmaceutical industry profits are linked directly to government spending. At the same time, their focus is on maximizing profit for their shareholders. The customer/patient is an afterthought.
The Americans Need Universal Healthcare.
It’s not just health insurance, but many industries in this country. We are living in a second gilded age and the haves are crushing the have-nots. Corporations are, by and large, out of control.
Media, Politicians, and Corporations have made their choice.
PROFIT over the PEOPLE. 🙄
It’s not FEEL. IT IS! 😤
First, start with their salaries. Hospital and Healthcare personnel receive millions upon millions in bonuses alone, every year.
If by "gilded age" you mean a death spiral... Then yes
Yeah, that was the 1920s. The bottom of that spiral was 1929 and 1939
This is what happens when profits are put above humanity. How much darkness do we need before we see the light.

We’ve been in the gilded age in every market for a few decades now
Absolutely true statement.
Our healthcare system is actually detrimental to our overall economy.
It devolves more middle-class income families into third-world financial situations than anything else--and it does it quickly, too.
So long as they can have a larger share of the pie, it doesn't matter to them (capitalists)

The Geriatric Clinic in our town was bought by a Private Equity firm and only accepts private Medicare Advantage patients. We call, they say yes we have appointments. Then when you say you have Medicare they say sorry no appointments for that type of insurance. We now have to drive 40 min's instead of 15 to get to a doctor. Let's get the grifters out!
Businesses are free to work with whomever they want to. I'm not really sure how only accepting Medicare Advantage is grifting when most of the fraud is through traditional medicare.

We have a 9000.00 dollar deductible from insurance. My insurance refused an MRI for my spine. The results were so bad that I needed a laminectomy and spinal fusion now! We paid for the MRI out of our pocket. I could give more examples...
@bryanx590 That is crazy! We paid over 1000.00 dollars.
@@Gina-dn6xm $1000 isn't too bad for an MRI. If your deductible is $9000, was the payment for the MRI denied prior to meeting the deductible? If it was denied AFTER meeting the deductible, I would resubmit to the insurance and if they still don't accept despite supporting paperwork, then sue them or contact your govt. representative.
There should be a cap on how much "donation" political parties can accept from corporations, big and small.
There is also no need to start campaigning so early. A candidate can only get a few thousand people to change their minds after two months of campaigning. The other voters have already made up their minds by then, so why waste the money!
Our entire economy is.
I have lived in America for 10 years and i am surprised how slowly things move here. Gun laws were an issue in 2016, 20 and 24, and yet nothing constructive has been done. How exhausting!
May be the government should make it mandatory for private schools for the elite to accept a certain percentage of meritorious students from lower income families. That way, when one of them has a mental breakdown and decides to publish his classmates for it, the NRA and the gun manufacturers realize what it's like to be at the receiving end.
Capitalism is in a gilded age.
Yet majority voted T into WH. Hoping he is the remedy for all of this inequality. How disappointing will the electorate be. Enjoy the show.
Both political parties are owned by corporations.
For decades now health care in the U.S. has largely been a private for profit commodity even when the hospital designates as a non profit. Health care in the U.S. has oft been a patient being pushed into bankruptcy. My question for the author- do you really think your book is going to change anything? 47 did nothing when he was 45.
At the very least. At the bare minimum THERE MUST BE A PUBLIC INSURANCE OPTION.
America needs to look at other countries to see how FREE healthcare can be successful. Citizens are dying because medicines & treatments are unaffordable. Citizens vote for the elected officials and then the elected officials vote for their own wallets.
This comment section certainly can’t go wrong….
Actually, wealth is more concentrated in a few individuals more than it was during the gilded age.
Over billing happens because consumers don’t know what things should cost. Plus there are no price controls in healthcare where they are really needed.
Medicare for all or DDD

Ill answer that for ya bud. Yes.
Patients have never been more neglected, overcharged, misdiagnosed, dismissed.
*_"Eclectic group coming"_*
That's putting it mildly
Corporate media idiocy. They really think we're stupid....
it's a low competition market. and so, the essence of antitrust law the same elements harm that industry. ultimately it leads to abuse of power when the competition is low, and predatorial behavior. alot of price gouging combined with bad services. this happens in most markets with low competition but it's very bad in the health care sectors aswell as colleges across the usa are predatorial, and very high in the commerce sectors like ports rails ltl trucking and parcel trucking. block jobs, block competition, and price gouging that's generally the theme.
so i agree that healthcare system needs to be better, but it's very much linked to low competition and antitrust, and leads to environement where price gouging just becomes common practices.
Nothing will change
"That's what I thought 😏", ghost of Louie XVI
Short answer “yes” but will any changes happen no because it’s about profit not about health. Private equity has ruined everything we hold dear.

In America, we live in an age of PROFIT over PEOPLE when it comes to medicine/healthcare. In many ways, you get the healthcare you can AFFORD. All health insurance is not created "equal." Many people become catestrophically ill or injured just to find out they're not COVERED when it comes to certain procedures, or owe a significant "copay" to access certain care. Or they must jump through hoops to be approved for certain procedures based on an "algorithm," which denies the patients care their doctor says they need more often than not. Delinquent medical bills are the main reason many over billed seniors file bankruptcy. And poor and indigent people get limited healthcare. Healthcare is a financial maze by DESIGN to squeeze money out of people while they are at their most vulnurable state. Bottom line; healthcare in America is a RACKET
