    Medusa is one of those controversial figures since her origin story can either tell her as a victim or just as guilty as Poseidon. Given that he's her uncle (and another god), it's unsurprising that Athena can't punish him as much as she'd probably like.

    BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD
    Hades sent the furies to bring Percy to the underworld, and that’s where the trio are going anyway. I think Alecto is just watching making sure Percy is the one who has the helm of darkness, and since he thinks Percy has it he just wants Percy to come to the underworld, so Alecto is just there to get them on track and watch for now. I think that’s why Alecto isn’t attacking the trio and letting them get away.

    • @victorma9355
      @victorma9355 6 месяцев назад +5

      Alecto was tasked to get the lightning bolt and hades helm of darkness. I don't recall them attacking the trio, I'm pretty sure Hades made explicit order for them to be alive. Hades was depicted more likeable in the books. What he said to percy when asked why he would want war between gods makes him sound like he's just too busy trying to keep order in underworld to care about gaining more power. The only time he's shown to be power hungry is in the final book when he tried to trap percy so that Nico can be the saviour of olympus but it was explained he only did that because he wants respect from the olympians, it's more about respect than power. Even then he came through in the end.

    It seems implied to me that Medusa's true story is unknown, hence the multiple versions. Medusa says one thing, and Annabeth accuses her of lying. Then Medusa claims Athena's version was a lie. Both Medusa and Athena would naturally want to portray themselves as good guys, so for all we know they both could be lying.

The best part, however, is LIN MANUEL MIRANDA HUMMING ARTHUR’S THEME BY CHRISTOPHER CROSS AND THEN THE OUTRO PLAYING IT IN FULL!!!!
    I am literally almost in tears over this as it is one of my most favorite songs from when I was little and it has been especially interesting with me being a gen z teen growing up with and listening to that era of music way more than anything else my generation listens too. In fact, one of the only songs from this past decade I actually listen to is Riptide🤣. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that Christopher cross music would be in Percy Jackson! It makes perfect sense with the elevator playing that style of music both in the books and the show but I am just overjoyed! The oracle projecting Gabe (or, in this book, "the Poker squad") is one of those weird early book things that never comes back up again. Although, to be fair, several of the PJO prophecies were told off-page to characters other than Percy, so the only other time we get to see the dead oracle tell a Prophecy is in the Titan's Curse when she hobbled out into the forest. Maybe she wasn't feeling so fancy then. Either way, it's a fun inclusion here with full visuals.

    Medusa definitely is one of those controversial figures in mythology mostly depicted as the villain. Also talked about how athena punished her because obviously, he could not do it to her own uncle.
    But one could also argue that athena didn’t really meant to punish medusa but gave her something to protect her so that no one could ever take advantage of her. Sorta like a self defense. You could look it in a way that it is either a curse or a gift.
    But the way this series highlighted the narrative from medusa is genius. You’ll always go back to what Sally Jackson said at the beginning of the series: “Not everyone who looks like a hero is a hero, and not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster.”
    Genius!!!

    Medusa's story does bring up a good point about mortal and god relationships: even if she did consent to sleep with Poseidon, she never really had the option to say no. Poseidon was supposed to be the god of the seas and the earth-shaker. He was known to also have a terrible temper (look at the bs Odysseus was put through after he displeased him). He wasn't very good with rejection either since his wife, Amphitrite, actually refused to marry him, which pissed him off so severely entire islands drowned until Zeus forced her mother to tell her where she went. Given all these factors and that Medusa was a mortal woman living on an island nation versus a god who can drown islands just by being mad enough to do it, there was at least a significant power dynamic that makes any relationship between them...questionable.

    It’s amazing! Because Medusa isn’t bad. Yes, she was cursed. She was a victim of the gods playing around, as most of mortals/demigods/creatures in mythology is. The “not everyone who looks like a…” line is the greatest thing they have added into the story so far imo. It’s planting the seeds for Percy’s conflict later. In the books it’s a way more subtle and slow thing how Percy is realizing that the gods aren’t really good, whereas here it’s way more straightforward which I think is great because the gods aren’t good, and if Percy should really struggle with the choice Luke gives him to join his side, the gods need to be actually portrayed that way.
    I like how this adaptation is even breaking more of the stereotypes. The book at least redeems Hades, and later on other creatures, but the movie basically plays into every greek mythology stereotype that has ever existed.
    I could write a whole essay about why systemically change after such a story is necessary and it’s important to start showing bad things gods do early on, but I don’t have the time

      Honestly, the fact that Percy beats Medusa at 12 in one chapter in the first book felt unbelievably too easy there too 😅 it’s a fan favorite moment though because of how percy then sends Medusa’s head to Olympus… so it’s more about what happens afterwards and how it establishes his impertinent personality then about the monster in my eyes. I think the author wishes that he made this monster more of a big boss for a later book but he didn’t know the book would be this successful lol

And no I am not considering Apollo cause he loves Meg a thousand more times then he love any of his children. Also he got a whole book to shape him into a decent person, and make him realize the gods suck.

      The Mist (which I think they explained at some point) is supposed to make mortals see unexplainable things in a way that makes sense to them. Basically any monster, god, mythological creature or use of magical powers will either be completely warped in their mind to resemble something normal or will not appear visible at all. The people on the bus are not seeing Annabeth disappear because the Mist is messing up their perception of reality

    I also find the lack of reaction from the general public to property damage really jarring, is that somehow hidden by the mist too?!

    Not so great. "Aunt Em's Garden Emporium" but they have their confrontation with her in a basement. Nowhere does it say she could control fire. Grover is supposed to smell monsters so he and Annabeth should have already been on edge about who Aunt Em might be. We feel only pity for Uncle Ferdinand. Grover doesn't take it hard, because his uncle's been missing a long time, and presumed dead, so he likely had his grief some time ago.
    Athena cannot revenge the desecration of her temple on Poseidon because he's another god. She can't touch him, IOW. So she takes it out on Medusa. But there are several stories of Medusa 1) she was always a monster, 2) she's a cautionary tale about vanity 3) she was a willing partner with Poseidon, 4) she was an unwilling partner of Poseidon, 5) the curse was a gift to protect her from males like Poseidon in the future/the curse was a curse for messing around in Athena's Temple/She always looked like that. Pick your tale. Riordan is going with Ovid's Roman version apparently and not the Greek version - Hesiod?

  • @dhruv9744
    @dhruv9744 6 месяцев назад +2

    Im ngl, even when reading the books in middle school, I used to wonder why they were even defending the gods besides being their kids. I think Riordan straight up says at one point that the gods arent good they are just a better alternative than the comically and inherently mustache twirling evil titans and giants. Kinda makes me think that Luke's stance of replacing the gods as the new gen sounds like a better alternative. I didnt like any of the gods in the books besides maybe Hermes, Hephaetus and Hestia because they are atleast self aware of their shiteness and admit it openly. Zeus is just straight up evil, Poseidon from his past and poseidon in the present feel like completely different people because past poseidon is a bad dude and current poseidon is made of marble, Athena is just straight up mean and petty, Apollo is a narcisitic idiot, Ares is even more evil, Hera is actually refreshingly candid about her badness, Artemis is a self righteous misandrist, Aphrodite is a sociopath, Hades is literally Hitler's dad allegedly but during the current day not even close to being the worst olympian I actually never got why hades is bad he just wears black and he rules the underworld which is his job, he actually seems like one of the better ones (ironic that he's the only one who held up the oath for forbidden children), Demeter is an NPC with a mom complex and very petty and cruel, Dionysus is bloody Dionysus. Hermes and Hephaestus seem like the only people i'd like to be around, and im pretty sure Hestia dosent wanna hang around anyone.

    How was Medusa alive again after the original Perseus beheaded her?

    • @Gradestar10
      @Gradestar10 6 месяцев назад +1

      It's explained in th books. Th monsters are 'archetypes', born frm th chaos n barbarism that alw exists beneath western civilization/th human world. This means that they are purely abstract entities. Monsters will merely reform in tartarus, th lowest area of th greek underworld, n come back whenever their physical forms are destroyed. 1 example is when percy kills asterion on his first day realizing he's a half-blood. 4 years later, he sees th minotaur again in kronos' titan army. This proves to be an ordeal for heroes n demigods, for after a monster is killed it can reappear n attack again, in any time period btw weeks n hundreds of years. When killed, they usually turn to golden dust, yellow vapor or crumble to ashes. Every time a monster is defeated it leaves behind a spoil of war, which is a part or parts of a monster's body or an object used by a monster that does not disintegrate when killed, like a minotaur's horn, or th head of medusa

    BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD
    Tbh, I didn’t really like the any they handled the encounter with Medusa in this episode, and I do have a few reasons why. 1: with the way they just had Medusa reveal herself, they completely changed what happened in the book. The whole point of tv adaptations are to recreate what happens in the source material. They’re supposed to bring people’s imaginations to life. Sometimes, they make changes for the betterment of the story, but this one was completely unnecessary. That’s why no one really liked the movie. Imo, it doesn’t really make the story better. For me, it was the opposite. 2: when Medusa blatantly tells Percy and friends who she is, it kinda takes away the suspense of the moment. They already know who she is, so they don’t have to worry about whether she was going to attack them or not, because they already know. Plus, danger impacts more when it comes from someone you thought you could trust. For example, if you found that someone was trying to kill you, but you don’t know who they are at all, of course you’d be scared, but if you were with your friend, and they suddenly try to kill you, it would be even worse. There would be a greater mix of emotions and feelings in your mind, and you would think, “who else have I been wrong to trust?”, or “I was so stupid for trusting this person”. In the book, Percy and Annabeth trust Medusa when she gives them food. They go along with her until the very last minute, when they realize that they were wrong and she couldn’t be trusted. The reveal hits more for the characters when they had previously trusted her. 3: Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are all KIDS. They were lured in by Medusa, and couldn’t help themselves. They hadn’t eaten fried food in a long time (according to the book), so the smell captivated them and they went inside. Kids tend to ignore the dangers of something when they want it really bad. It was the same for them. They were hungry, and there was food at aunty em’s, so they ignored Grover’s strange feelings and went inside anyway. Just because they are children of the gods doesn’t make them any less kids. They’re just kids who just so happen to have special abilities. 4: Medusa is a monster, and as they said in episode 2, monsters have their own powers. In the book, Percy described feeling sleepy and content when eating the food medusa had cooked for them. He also said that while eating, he ignored all the warning signs that pointed to medusa being someone who wanted to bring the trio harm. It was most likely medusa ‘s own abilities. If not for them disregarding all the information they had been given, the trio would have immediately have defeated her rather than given her the slightest chance to get them. It would have been too easy of a victory. In the episode, we barely get a glimpse of her skills and powers. While these are reasons that I think the book is superior, I’m not intending to trash on the show. This is just my opinion, and some people may agree with me, and some may not.
    And, don’t be so hard on Grover. Both his assignments were children of the big three, being Thalia and Percy. Being some of the more powerful demigods, monsters would attack them relentlessly, especially the stronger ones, like the furies and the Minotaur. While Thalia got turned into a tree, he still managed to save Annabeth and Luke, who would never had survived on their own. Plus, as stated in both the book and the movie, Thalia wouldn’t listen to Grover, so it was completely out of his hands. Percy’s mom did get taken by hades on his way to camp half blood, but Grover accompanied Percy on his quest and helped him get her back. Grover is a pretty helpful character despite what you said.

      Eh they pose an equal threat honestly. The furies can call for backup and can fly, Medusa has the death glare. The important thing is Medusa 100% manipulated them into picking her. If you look at what she does it’s obvious. Medusa presents herself as a safe option: she offers the trio food, says she won’t kill them, and leaves so they can make the decision themselves. In addition, notice how the front of Medusa’s house is full of monster statues and nothing else, making her seem like a protector/savior that protects people from monsters and offers them shelters, this is how she manipulates people into coming into her house, where she turns them into stone in her basement. We as the audience know Medusa is bad because we’ve read the books, but to the kids, they see someone who is offering help and looks like they kill monsters, plus food (they’re really hungry)… Percy was willing to take that chance because he wants to trust monsters. It’s why he trusts Tyson in book 2 when all the other campers don’t and think he’s a spy for Kronos, Percy doesn’t discriminate against monsters, and it’s also why the second Medusa starts talking about being evil he runs away to join the trio. He gave Medusa a chance, and she wasted it.
