  • TLB Mallorca’s Artista Shoes are some of the most talked about amongst the powerhouse Goodyear welt Country of Spanish Shoemakers like Carmina, Yanko, Cobbler Union, J.Fitzpatrick. I finally got my first pair, the model 210 in black box calf from the Weinheimer Tannery, with a leather sole, metal toe plate.
    I unbox and shine this pair, and share my initial
    Thoughts about the brand and quality.

    TLB is considered by most to be the best. When comparing price to quality ratio, I can tell you it’s hard to beat especially the Artista line. Not a lover of black shoes, but the medallion combined with the brogue make these a nice shoes in my opinion. Waiting to the the pairing of them with the socks and trousers David. Great video as usual 🙌🏾

      Thank you Kenwin! Yeah black shoes are starting to grow on me and everyone should really have at least 1 pair. But yeah tlb looks good so far!

      Completely fair statement. You could argue every one is the best lol. It all depends on the customer and what they want.

    My experience with TLB was terrible. Received Balmoral Brogue with severe heal block out of balance on one of the shoes. It seesawed about 1/2 inch on front edge of heel block. Took several weeks to get customer service responses. After two months of emailing them I finally received shipping label. Sent shoes back and all they did was replace heel stack on both shoes without fixing the issue. Essentially they sent me back the shoe with exact same problem. I’ve reached out three times by email to make them aware of what happened and they stopped responding all together. What these product review channels never address is the product sent to a ‘reviewer’ goes through a completely different scrutiny than what the general public product gets. That is true with the customer service piece as well.

    I personally lean more towards british shoes.
    Speaking of black cap toes, I came across a vintage pair of Church's Consul that was unworn on eBay ; exceptional shoes with incredible details : back then, Church's really was what Gaziano and Girling is today.
    Paid 350€ for them, which is a steal.
    Would recommend looking for new old stock shoes over brand new ones to anyone!

      Yeah there are some great opportunities there. But it comes with a lot of additional unknowns that a new shoe doesn’t. So just needs to be the right kind of customer to make an informed purchase about what they’re getting into

    Great work as with all your videos 😊 I think we the viewers would love to see a follow up video with footage of you wearing this pair in a real life settting. Furthermore, it would be nice to see you discuss the experience of wearing shoes in this price point compared to shoes in the Acme/Yeossal price point is like. There is evidently more handwork and styling and in the higher tier, but is there something noticeable on foot, walking around day to day?
    Thanks again for your library of beautiful classic footwear.

    For me Carmina is hands down the best overall spanish shoemaker. TLB is a close second, and in some ways their shoes look better on foot imo. While Im a fan of Carmina's, Ive noticed that some of their shoes look better as stand alone objects than they do on foot.

    • @Shellvedge
      @Shellvedge  2 года назад +3

      I was heavily invested in the Carmina brand, but they’ve just changed so much over the last 18 months. Without getting into that entire conversation just from an objection view, TLB offers many standard details for them that are superior in quality and execution than Carmina. Carmina offers more lasts, leathers, patterns and other intangibles that will by default make Carmina more accessible than TLB. But when TLB offers this black Oxford for $361 USD, and Carmina’s equivalent is $500ish, no contest TLB is objective the better shoe.
      It doesn’t mean everyone likes them better, but yeah.

      @@Shellvedge while I love my TLB's, from what I can tell judging the 2 side by side, TLB doesnt offer any objectively superior construction or materials vs what Carmina offers. I dont view beveled waists, leather stiffeners etc as a priority in a shoe, and I actually prefer the more substantial waists Carmina makes. Carmina also uses superior leather in my experience, and I prefer their wire edging over TLB's edging. Additionally, as you stated, Carmina offers a much more expansive range of sizes, lasts, colors and leather textures than TLB, which is not only appreciated, but is needed. Ill continue being a TLB customer, as the do make a great product and I love the pairs I have. But, aside from being a good value, Ive seen nothing from them that makes them objectively better than my Carminas. Especially not when it comes to boots. But like you said, to each their own

    • @Shellvedge
      @Shellvedge  2 года назад +2

      @@silentsir2446 yeah I understand. I think if we’re objectively looking at the 2, a more anatomical shape last, that has a narrower insole, resulting in a narrow waist, is designed better for support of the heel and arch. The extended leather heel countering again, provides functional support that doesn’t exist in Carmina’s construction and the real leather used for the heel and leather toe box are superior materials to a fiber board or non-real leather in the Carmina’s. Leather won’t disintegrate like the composite materials do.
      I only belabor the point because objectively, the materials used in the construction and the designs of the last shape are better than many other comparable options including Carmina’s choice of materials.
      BUT from a subjective POV it’s possible people don’t like having support on their arch or heel, and don’t care about the more resilient leathers inside the upper because it’s not something you see breakdown.
      Hopefully that makes sense. This is why comparing brands is impossible. Objectively, there are always ways to differentiate and pick the superior of the 2 within that silo but, most value when it comes to shoes or clothing is subjective to what the client finds value in. Hence the complexity of a comparison of brands lol.
      Appreciate the conversation man, really do enjoy this!

    • @silentsir2446
      @silentsir2446 2 года назад

      @@Shellvedge absolutely..it makes complete sense, and Ive heard that arguement made before - which, while it is a valid argument, is just not one I wholly buy into..but nevertheless, I appreciate your response, and Ive always found these shoe discussions intriguing as well. But yeah, I can see how if one already has collapsed arches or weak arches to begin with, then leather stiffeners might be a requirement for that person. Thats not an issue for me, so leather stiffeners arent something I prioritize nor fetishize. I have enough shoes in my shoe rotation that none of the stiffeners in my shoes will degrade anytime soon, and likely not even before I die, so it's not something I will ever need to prioritize in my shoe, beyond whatever psychological and social validation I would get from having whichever material is highly valued by others. However, if heel stiffeners were a priority for me at all, I just might prioritize the superior moisture resistance of non-leather materials over a full leather stiffener anyway, depending on my needs at the time. But as it stands today, leather vs non-leather stiffener certainly doesnt qualify as an objective criteria by which I make my shoe purchases. Similarly, I dont find a slimmer last resulting in a slimmer waist to be always objectively better. For a slimmer last with a less exaggerated, non-beveled waist that doesnt possess the balance issues that can be inherent to some of these hyperslim waists, I prefer Carmina's Simpson last. So Carminas materials are objectively superior in some ways to TLB's. However, I can see why some would prefer TLB's construction methods for certain reasons, and from a value perspective theyre certainly hard to beat.

    Could you do a video of private labelling and whether that affects quality? E. g. crockett & jones makes shoes for Ralph Lauren, New and Lingwood, Bonafe for Aubercy etc.

    • @Shellvedge
      @Shellvedge  2 года назад

      I could. 🤔. Have to look into it. Affects quality in what way?

    • @davidpielykh3996
      @davidpielykh3996 2 года назад

      Well there will be no much value in that video, it all depends on an specific agreement between companies. Church's was making shoes for Royal Tweed, lower leather quality at a lower price point. C&J produced some for Peal Co., quality is the same, but some of the models and lasts are not available through C&J directly.

    • @Shellvedge
      @Shellvedge  2 года назад

      @@davidpielykh3996 I’d disagree, I think it could for sure have value. the surface level context you shared in your comment has value, because people looking at that kind of brand now have more information than they did before. I don’t think it has to be an exhaustive cataloguing of each relationship between every factory and every brand to be a valuable resource of explaining how it may differ.

    I agree that they are the best shoes for the price point, unless they do not have a model to one’s preference.

    • @Shellvedge

      Well I think that’s applicable to many brands or every brand. If they don’t make the style or pattern or leather you prefer, then it’s moot.

      @@jackobrien1026 I don’t think I’d compare either with TLB. They’re completely different ranges, maybe price wise they’re peers but from a value, structural and what it is you’re getting, it’s not quite apples to apples.
      It’s like trying to compare a top range of 1 class with an entry range of another and a value/mediocre materials and execution option of another range. Of course you can compare them, but things get muddy and convoluted when making such comparisons with little basics in common.
