I promised a cozy feeling and what's cozier than a father - daughter project - particularly when the object of the project is drummer Cozy Powell...
THE SONG - "Dance With The Devil" is a drum solo / instrumental co-written by keyboard player/arranger Phil Dennys and producer Michael Peter Hayes (better known as Mickie Most). It incorporates a drum solo by Cozy Powell (born Colin Trevor Flooks). The bass player is Suzi Quatro who was also connected with Most's Rak Records. The song was recorded and released in 1973. Exact dates don't seem to be available.
For a drum-centric song, "Dance With The Devil" did well in the charts. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #89 on Mar 16, 1974 and peaked at #49 on Apr 27. It was last seen at #59 on May 11, 1974 after 9 weeks on the chart. It fared even better in the UK reaching #3 on the Singles Chart in January 1974.
Part of the song is based on a theme from "Third Stone from the Sun" from Jimi Hendrix's 1967 album 'Are You Experienced'.
THE DRUMMER - Cozy Powell was born in Gloucestershire, England. An adoptee, he never knew his biological parents. He started playing drums in the school orchestra at the age of 12. His classmates nicknamed him Cozy after American drummer Cozy Cole. At 16, he left school, went to Germany, and joined a band. He told 'Modern Drummer' magazine, "There was no opportunity at all in England unless you were in a professional band and had been around for a while. You really had to go abroad if you were an amateur or up-and-coming musician, which is what I did. I spent three years over there."
Cozy never learned to read music and said he was self-taught. He wanted to be a rock drummer and wasn't into jazz drummers. "Two who influenced me the most were Brian Bennett from the Shadows and Bobby Elliot from the Hollies. People would ask why I wasn’t into Buddy Rich. I wasn’t aiming to be Buddy Rich. I just wanted to be the best in my field, so I watched the drummers who I thought were the two top pop drummers at the time."
In the early '70s, he auditioned for Jeff Beck and got the gig. He was on two albums, the self-titled 'Jeff Beck Group' (1970) and 'Rough and Ready' (1972). When Beck's group broke up, Powell concentrated on session work. In 1973, while he was playing in sessions with Alexis Korner's rock-big band fusion project CCS, producer Mickie Most approached Cozy about doing a solo recording. He discussed the project with 'Modern Drummer' -
"I was in about six groups between Jeff and Rainbow. One was called Bedlam, which came to the States and did a very brief tour with Black Sabbath. There was another one called Big Bertha, and another one called Strange Brew, which never actually played. Then I did a drum single, which took a half an hour to do, in 1973. That was quite fun. It was called “Dance With The Devil” and I think it was in the Top 40 in just about every country in the world." Asked if it was his composition, Cozy answered, "Not really. I mean, it was just a drum rhythm. I couldn’t really say I wrote it. It was just something that came into my head. It was Mickie Most’s idea. He said, “I’ve got this idea for a tune. Throw a few rhythms at me.” So I just sat and played a few things. He said, “I think we’ll do it like this.” He just said, “Play this; try that.” He did the producer’s job. We finished it and I thought no more about it. The next month, I noticed it at the bottom of the charts, creeping up and up and up and up. It was a very big hit over here."
After taking a one year break, Cozy continued his career with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Michael Schenker, Whitesnake, Emerson Lake and Powell, Jack Bruce, Gary Moore, Black Sabbath and many other artists. His life was cut short in a gruesome car accident in 1998 at the age of 50.
THE COLLABORATION - Despite Sina's reluctance to do drum solos, she has tackled them before in "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and "Wipeout". The latter, in 2016, was also a father-daughter project and this collab emulates it. Sina even pulled out the same shirt she wore and Mike tried, quite successfully, to recreate his '"Wipeout" look'.
Sina is credited with drums - no doubt about that. She gives them quite a vigorous workout too. Mike is credited with "Everything else" which means guitars, keyboards, and bass. The keyboard work is excellent. I wish there was some video of it but I'm told that some think pressing keys doesn't look very cool. I don't agree but, in any case, it sounds very cool. Mike's keyboard work here provides an organ, a brass section, and the mysterious voice of Arwen that puzzled us for many months.
Rosanna was tempted to ask Sina some questions about her drumming but decided that her performance speaks for itself. Since this is her tribute to Cozy, who was a play by feel drummer, there really is nothing to ask. One needs only to listen and feel...

Hi Sina, you're welcome and thanks! I think amazing is better applied to what you and your dad did in the video above but I've learned to be gracious in accepting thanks myself. It's always a good feeling to know your work is appreciated whether it's playing music or just writing about it.
Lonnie - you are absolutely correct.
Santa - I seem to have that impression. If I'm wrong, I'm sure she'll chime back in but I think she follows Ringo's philosophy about drum solos - rarely, and if ever, brief. That's what makes her excursions like this one so compelling.

I'm blown away - when you enjoy what your doing it comes through loud and clear in your performance - excellent viewing when it comes to seeing both of you together. I want to say something about your talent Sina and that is - I know you rate Ringo Starr as a drummer and have alot of respect for Ringo as I do. In saying that I saw Ringo playing in the Cavern in Liverpool. Age for age you Sina are are far more advanced than Ringo was. He was about average until the Beatles did a tour of Germany - Ringo took lessons from German drummer's. You've definitely got what it takes to also be known as a brilliant drummer. Nice going ...

And once again, both thumbs up to your dad - one for the super great guitar playing, the other for the same video work! I am firmly convinced that since the Rock'n'Roll sky has internet, Cozy is watching this video as well, looking forward to his drums and drumming "Dance With The Devil" with both of you. I have been following Sina for years, Drummers always travel to a different beat of their own...Sina can duplicate every style and often better than the original, even when beat by beat never missing on favorite hits.
I am amazed at how Sina has ability to use every muscle in in fingers, hands, wrists, shoulders,
legs feet and hips and thighs and use all to do different tasks with each and makes it look simple.
Sina, you are a master above all I have ever seen. I am 71 and have always loved the drums in all types of music, since I was 12. You,Sina, are the best drummer I have ever watched. And you are still young. I will join soon as my S.S.check comes next month. I can't give much more than praise for your expertise with your instrument.
    A drum is an instrument.
    A guitar is an instrument
Your entire drum set and mics are great, but YOU are the instrument.
God Bless you and keep on drumming .I love everything you cover. I like most all the song ,too, but you are the instrument and no one can touch you.

What makes a musician an entertainer is their showmanship while they are playing; 99 you have definitely crossed the Rubicon. When it comes to the total package you are a few short steps to achieving something so few have had the ability to achieve. The band playing has allowed your growth as the consummate entertainer. I don't remember ever hearing this song in 1974. I'm glad I got the chance to become acquainted with it. That's a memorable drum part, for sure.
Sina tackled it with all of the energy and precision the song demands; with Mike's expert help, she has given us a smashing cover.
    My Friday is complete.
Is there anything Sina can't do with her drum kit?
    Nope.

This was utterly fantastic! You and Mike really outdid yourselves. Such energy! And the fact that you found the old shirt, and Mike found the old beard, just added nostalgia. I still watch your cover of "Wipe Out" over and over. You truly shine in this video!

I had never heard this song until today. So naturally I didn't know what to expect but by the 17 second mark this song had me. It immediately went to my saved list. Of course I had to go listen to Cozy's version and Sina nailed it. But it should come as no surprise because that's what we've come to expect and she delivers every time. Thank you for putting this out there Sina you're the best.

Chère Sina, fantastic version of this super music for drummers. I remember when I was playing this music on stage with my group, we were teen agers!
This was "my Moment" during the concerts. Very nice memories.
Your version is wirklich great, amazing. Thanks for this great moment and for sharing it.
You are a so young Miss, but a great drummer.

Sina, This is an incredible demonstration of your skills. I said I’ve only heard this song played with 2 drummers and your dad was amazing as well. What an awesome talent you are I love this one and I’m probably one of your many fans that pestered you to cover this song. I always thought it was too difficult for one drummer but little did I know well done incredible performance.

This video is Sina's 74th to reach one million views on her channel. She also has 5 on Jadyn Rylee's channel with Jadyn. Another 9 of her videos have 900K or more views and will reach the one million mark in the coming months. Not bad for a niche channel by a young lady from a small town in Germany.

Thanks again Sina. Also to your father. Cozy is one of my favorites. Your just a little too young to be considered a legend, but with your feeling and skills, it's not far away. Love the Beatles influences on both instruments. Ringo's oyster finish on the drums and the Gretsch guitar. Always look forward to all the videos. Thanks from Ft.Worth, Texas.
