- Want to take a shot at Jeff Cavaliere’s pullup challenge? It doesn’t matter if you can knock out more than 15 reps in a single set of pullups or struggle to do up to 3. Anyone can take part in this pull-up workout challenge.

The rules are simple. You perform a certain number of reps of a pull-up dependent upon your starting strength level. This number is determined specifically by the number of pullups you can do in a single set to failure. You can either test this before you attempt the challenge or on a separate day so you can be fresh for the main event.
Here is how to determine your pull-up rep goal:
1-3 pullups in a single max set: You will perform 15 reps in this challenge
4-8 pullups in a single max set: You will perform 30 reps in this challenge
9-14 pullups in a single max set: You will perform 40 reps in this challenge
15 or more pullups in a singe max set: You will perform 50 reps in this challenge.
That said, the scoring in this workout is not about your ability to perform the number of reps so much as it has to do with how many sets it takes you to perform them. Each time you drop from the bar, the set you are performing is considered over. Your rest time between sets should either be as long as it takes the person you are going head to head with to complete their reps or 30 seconds max if you are performing it by yourself.
To count these reps you want to be sure that you get your chin up over the bar on every rep and that you extend all the way down at the bottom. Count out the rep at the bottom to ensure that you pause briefly before ascending into your next repetition.
The short rest time is definitely going to be a humbling addition to this workout for many. You may be used to knocking out reps of pullups but then taking adequate rest in between sets to enable you to get just as many or close to as many reps again in subsequent sets. Not here. You have to max out that rest time at just 30 seconds and get back up on the bar to continue.
If you are performing this in the doorway at home using a door pull-up bar and find that your legs are too long and hit the floor - it is acceptable to bend your knees behind you. Generally, if height isn’t an issue however I recommend that you keep your legs straight and a little out in front of you to maximize the output of the kinetic chain without succumbing to energy leaks that can sap your strength.
It doesn’t matter if you are a rank beginner or someone that is more advanced, anyone can perform this pullup challenge. Be sure to share it with a friend that you think would like the chance to compete as well. If you don’t do as well as you think you could, don’t be afraid to rest up a couple days and come back to perform it again. Also, you may find that you used the wrong strategy when you performed this challenge. Taking the sets close to failure may be costing you a shot to get more reps out in later sets but you need to be careful that you don’t do too many unnecessary sets that will increase your total count.
So how do you score yourself? Use this chart to see.
How many sets did it take you to complete your goal number of reps?
5 or less sets: X-Treme
6-8 sets: Elite
9-11 sets: Pro
12-15 sets: Solid
More than 15 sets: Basix

@@djam7484 I would get some exercise bands. I used a very thick one which allowed me to do many more reps than just pulling on my body. You tie the flat band on the bar and step on it. It works great. I did this for a year. One time, I was in a hotel and had my round exercise band. I had it attached to the door. I was down on my knee and because the band is much weaker than my weight was doing 20 to 30 reps. I got very sore doing it this way. Jeff I absolutely love the pull up contest. I got to tell you this means a lot to me to watch you guys do this ... because when I was 59 years old in 2007 ( I'm 75 now) I set my goal to be able to do 60 pull-ups in my 60th year and 3 months into my 60th year I hit 68 pullups. I gave myself a few more minutes between sets of 10 maybe I gave myself 5 minutes and then maybe near the end I gave myself maybe 20 minutes but after that it didn't really matter cuz I was done. Now I'm 75 years old and my goal is to do 75 pull-ups and I got to tell you this s*** is really hard at this age but I'm up to 30 pull-ups I just started in January this year. And I'm going to the New York State Fair I'm going to the recruiters for the Marines, Army, Air Force Reserve, Navy and the Coast Guard where they have a pullup challenge. I'm going to do pull-ups for those guys and I'm going to walk away with really good t-shirts so that's my motivation. I got a pull up bar for home at the beginning of september and since then the majority of my pull workout has been pull ups and chin up forms, 2 days out of the week. I reached 10 max (weighing 160lbs) rep last week and I've never done pull up before in my time starting to work out since beginning of the year. I got 9 reps today for a 40 rep challenge, it took me 10 sets to complete: 9, 4, 4, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 3, 2. All I can say is I am proud of how well I did even if I went in thinking I could do it in less. Still got my "pro" card barely lol, better than what I think people I know could do. I think this is an interesting challenge to perform once a week to really push some potential gains. Definitely makes you feel like a boss the better you get at it.

I just discovered that my left side muscles are weaker than the right ones. EVERY left muscle... Who else wants Jeff to make a video on how to overcome this problem??? (Mind-muscle connection)
He has made a few, including "How to Fix Muscle Imbalance (EQUALIZE YOUR SIZE!)", and "4 Causes of UNEVEN MUSCLES (and how YOU can FIX them!)"
Do single side dumbbell exercises. Say your right arm can bicep curl 15kg for 4x12 but your left arm can only do 10. Do a standard progressive overload with the weak arm, but keep the weight for the right the same, until they even out. Helped me overcome an imbalance in my single arm dumbbell row.
Salcuba ... I had this same problem. It truly IS all about mind-muscle connection. I overcame it by beginning with static pose / isometrics while focusing on my weak (left) side. From there I made an effort to concentrate my mind on the weak side while doing sets (not easy in the beginning, but will soon become second nature)
Bottom line: *You can do it* All the best ...

Lol yeah they are alright but no comparison
No, calisthenics guys does a lot of swing and steps(on ladder bar) movements pull ups aren't easy for anyone in the world and everyone can't do it but those who do doesn't have that big difference in reps.
@@ag135i what??
@AG your wrong, calisthenics is body weight training, not swinging, look at max true for example, they only swing when they are free styling
@AG maybe you need to train the pull up more, because experienced athletes can do a lot of them like it’s nothing
I love pull ups; separating the men from the boys. I started doing wide grip pull ups about 2 years ago and for swimming it has made me much faster. It takes real focus and good muscle development to get pull up sets in. Rock on!
I just tried this. I got to 50 in 7 sets in around 7 minutes. I think the only reason why I was able to do this so quickly is because a few days ago I finished the 22-day pull-up challenge. I'm sure that helped.
I think Jeff made the mistake of going beyond 10 on his first set. He got a bit too close to his max rep, and that makes a huge difference on the amount of reps you can do in the following sets.
Here's how it went for me:
1. 10
2. 16
3. 24
4. 30
5. 36
6. 42
7. 50 (I was hanging for a few seconds between each of the last 5 reps).
If anyone's interested, I'll be posting a video soon with the results of three 22-day (pull-ups, push-ups, and posture) challenges from Athlean-X.
I thought they went always to failure, I might be wrong didn't watch with sound on, yet.
@@filippecha7909 Jesse did. The last few sets, he was barely doing 2 reps.

Last week I managed a 34 strict rep set, but still can't do a one armed pull up. I'm on Test, Deca, EQ, and Cardarine... So I'm sure that helped significantly.
@@michaelnewton1754 That is freaking impressive! Nicely done!
@@armir_ko thanks, dude. Even before the gear, pull-ups had been my main back day exercise since highschool... Where I think I started out able to do 7 or 8, right from the get go. Over a decade later, now, my usual heavy back day starts with +75 lbs weighted sets of 13-16 reps. My other lifts are all lacklustre, but I know if I ever need to climb an infinite series of walls for some reason, I'm ready.
I used your pace for the sets. I was Elite for 50 pull-ups. My goal was 5 sets but couldn't do it with how quick Jessie stopped and shortened the rest time, lol. Thanks for the challenge!!
@bilishu aliss HaHa! Thx. Gotta keep it real if we want to keep on keepin' on :-) Best!
Next challenge: 1RM weighted one arm pull up!
Everyone's shoulders disliked that comment
@@g.matosdsul 🤣🤣🤣 I guess everyone needs some stronger shoulders!
😂😂💪🏼
Laughs in Chris Heria
That challenge was really good to watch. Awesome work Jesse. Much respect as I’m struggling with less than half that many reps 👍😎🇦🇺
This just in, Jesse has recurved 300 mail-in pull-ups making him the official Pull-up challenge winner
It's fun to watch you both enjoy the challenge. That looks hard af!
Jeff getting a max of 8 reps in set 2 shows how hard Pull ups really are!!!
Well, when you have like 30secs rest. That doesn't help you either
@@jacure123 no it doesn't. I did this , it's very tough. Took me 8 sets to get 30 Pull ups
Love the banter between them
16 pull-ups for me. Why did I test my max reps yesterday 😭😭🤣
Great vid once again. I love these challenges where you get to test yourself against the great man (and Jesse! 😠) himself!
Just tried it myself 50 in 6 sets for 7min 30 time. Thanks Jeff! All your Virtual coaching is paying off! 💪
Jeff always says “I’m gonna leave it there” when it’s so obvious he would’ve failed the next rep😂
Exactly loool. He can't fool us

Browney be like - its just a Piece of cake for me 😂
Great video! I really like seeing Jeff in action against Jessie.
*who's here after browney did this challenge in 3 sets, and his brother did it in 4?*
Meeee
Me 😏
Lol, I wanna see that. I thought he was going to do it in one set in this video
Yep
