DJI Mini 3 Pro Firmware Update - Range Issue Fixed!

- Yesterday we received a very important firmware update for the DJI Mini 3 Pro that corrected several issues that many were experiencing including poor range and the DJI RC locking up. This firmware update is for the DJI RC controller only and is version 01.01.0100. I did a test flight this morning to see if the range issue has been corrected and indeed it has, on my unit for the issue I was having. I also tested out the new "Fly App" update v1.6.9. Everything seemed to operate as expected, some uses are reporting the compass is not working correctly, but mine seemed to perform normally. Hi Shawn. Thank you for the up date. Great to see the range issue is improving. A couple of videos ago, you tested the RC with the Mavic 3 and had good range results thinking it was the Mini 3 Pro drone with the range problem. This firmware up date this time is for the RC. Thanks again. I did one test flight and yes numbers locked in at FCC mode '90'. Flying in rural farm area solid 4 white bars to 500 meters okay to 750m poor at 1000m and it did an auto return to home at 1200m. I rarely fly past 500m so I am a happy.

Thanks for testing all the latest updates for the Mini 3 Pro. It has seemed to solve most of your issues, including the weak signal strength. It's hard to really get a handle on how good this drone is until we can get past all this software issues that plague many owners. Great video Shawn.

I expect you're right about the wireless radio being a tad weaker than the Mini 2. 4K60 is pretty CPU intensive, and they would have likely had to compromise somewhere to get that one-up on the Nano+ while staying under 249g. Glad yours is fixed!

I have a Mavic 3 and RC Pro but the newDJI RC is linked to my Mini 3 Pro and Mavic 3... super light and portable. Loving this remote! Nice test!

Hi Shawn thanks for this video. The range is a bit better before i was at 200 ish meters now im at 600 ish but something strange that happend is
after turning it on the transmission tab, and for a split second it was in FCC and there was option auto/ manual for me to choose 2.4 and 5 but it disappeared right away. This is the stranges thing

I found that the CE/FCC issue was fixed immediately as well. Not bad for an issue that they swore up and down did not exist. Just in time for a week away at a remote cottage.

This weekend I experienced range issues/weak signal with my Air 2S. I never had problems before... I hope all the updates doesn't cause other models to go from good to bad.
Only issue I noticed after the update was on two separate flights the focus went blurry twice on the rc screen for a second or two then came back to normal in focuus..Did get better distance though.

When I did my update the remote did update the drone. If you downloaded direct on computer you may need to update the drone. I don't know, just an observation.

I noticed after this 0100 update I had a little more range aswell but not that good.
I could get to 800 feet with 5 white bars as well. After the 0300 update I could get 1,700 feet with 5 white bars. I eventually got to well over 4,000 feet until I had ornge then red and at about 4,300 I was asked to return home. I canceled and turned around and never lost connection even after turn 180 to fly hime. So that was another big improvement as well as the compass working correctly as well. Ray C Florida

Somebody mentioned in a group somewhere apparently they’re adding a dolly zoom smart feature. I don’t know if it’s true but That will be interesting. I’m also really hoping they attack to fly and waypoint missions
It better be ability to take regular video during autonomous waypoint motions. Where you can set it to move around super smoothly like a robotic slider in the sky. But at the moment for some crazy reason you can only take hyperlapse photography with this mode. You can't simply take video. It drives me insane. Could be fixed in 2 seconds by a programmer.
Did you notice how wacky the "estimated remaining flight time" was bouncing all over the place?

Thanks for the video. Not sure if you noticed that your compass at the bottom left of your screen seemed way off relative to your location and it seem to be bouncing around everywhere.
Myself and others have tried to do a compass calibrate to try and correct this behaviour as a result of this new update, but it will not allow you to calibrate the RC. What happens when you select Start it automatically tells you that the calibration has completed without you having to go through the calibration process.
I tested my Mini 3 pro yesterday after the new 1.6.9 update and all is well except the compass. Seems like one thing gets fixed however the fix screws up another important feature. Let's hope DJI fixes the compass soon. Thanks Shawn for your post.
Great thanks for sharing your feedback. Yeah after inspecting my video indeed my compass is a little wacky too
The fix for the compass for me was calibrate it on the RC. 1. Make sure you are connected to Wifi and your region is correct. 2. Pull down shade, select settings icon. 3. Select Compass, Calibrate Compass. This corrects the orientation issue in the onscreen compass.

@@telebeater I would probably try calibrating the Aircraft and RC compass together, check it in use. Stay clear of structures, metal, and even the components (put controller 6 feet from drone, then calibrate. Good luck with it! 👍
My mini 3 with RC Controller range is less than the mini 2 I also own, but note mini 3 does travel further than I can comfortably see. So I am a happy camper, other than it would be awesome to add an FPV goggle system to it like the Mavic Pro.
I did notice the flight radar in the bottom left is still out of whack but it's now accurate when in RTH. I wish dji would get this figured out especiallyif it accurateon the RTH, my Mini 1 has the same inaccuracies with the radar but I need to check if RTH is accurate on the Mini 1. I had the chance yesterday to do a range test in the same rural location where my FCC Mini 1 with a set of parayagi was able to go out 5400m before having to turn around in order to be able to get home, it still had full signal and probably could have gone much further if it was a one way flight. My FCC Mini 3 was able to go a touch over 5000m in that same spot yesterday which is good compared to some of the issues others are having. I have another urban test to do in a spot that my Mini 1 gets 3400m range but so far my FCC Mini 1 gets better range when using a parayagi range extender. I also noticed that I didn't have to use your fix to keep my Mini 3 in FCC mode yesterday so maybe the update fixed that too.
Unfortunately for us in CE zones range is still incredibly problematic, which is sad because the mini 2 did not have these problems it still to this day flys out to 2-4km 0 problems the mini 3 is yet to surpass 1000M
that might be due to the hidden antennas ? Maybe it will never be solved..

@@vlikkas I would believe it was an antenna issue if the problem only happened with the new rc but it doesn't. It may never be fixed however as whatever it is antenna or otherwise its certainly not a software issue

The fix for the compass for me was calibrate it on the RC.
1. Make sure you are connected to Wifi and your region is correct.

Hoi BlairAir. I can’t calibrate the compass on the RC. When I am on the “compass calibration screen “ there’s is a button “start calibration “. When I hit that button, immediately there is an other screen “ calibration succeeded “ without me doing any movement. Do you have any idea how to fix that?

@@chrisbonnaerens2094 means exactly what it says. Your compass is in spec, and not calling for calibration. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it. As ibsaid originally, "for me, this worked". Hopefully DJI will add it near the top of a pretty long list of bugs, mostly minor annoyances, but some are more concerning. Precision RTH seems off, and return to original location after Quickshots in vertical (portrait) mode is not very accurate. The good news is it appears DJI is applying huge resources to this drone, for obvious reasons. 😉

My range issues mostly persist:
Before that update I had drops between 180m - 450m, now it lost signal at 680m and went into RTH due to signal loss at 730m.
So maybe a minor tad improvement but nothing compared to the M2.
Still in two minds whether to return the M3P to the shop and get a new one. But comments here suggest others having similar issues and my feel is that it throttles signal too much in CE mode (whereas ppl in FCC mode seem generally happier).
So, in summary, agree with you and think future FW updates may address it eventually.

this time something different happened. Before i would get a range of only 200 m ish now its lost at 600 m ish similar to your situation.
Also this happend:

Its so strange that this issue fixed some people M3P like shawns here just doesnt make sense LOL
@@NasMah Since 1.6.9 I've had marginally better range but after 730m lost signal completely / abruptly and went into RTH (luckily came back pretty quick).
DJI suggest one last test asking me to "fly higher", so will do that. But at the same time suggested if problems persist to return it to the shop (Argos, UK). Luckily, Argos has got loads of stock now so might do that it this last test also disappoints.
My suspicion is that this is a CE-Region issue and has likely to do with over-zealous signal-throttling (which should be fixable with yet another FW release).
At the same time am getting a bit fed up being a Beta tester for DJI: I've now done 7 tests for them and it took them 1 1/2 weeks to get back to me analysing my flight log data / vids.
Not good enough for something with that price tag!
@@MrksKr Did you try and send it in all 4 directions? N/E/W/S if its still cutting of at 730 m then its not interference causing signal issue right? How is signal issue in all 4 directions?
@@NasMah In principle, yes. However, the flying location I go to (outside London) do not really offer that much space either side.
But I went back in the same location I previously flew and got around 600m @ 50m height. There's been suggestions that at 2X that height the signal may improve by 2-4X, so up to >2,000m. I need to test this but didn't as too hot in the UK atm.
If I get a solid 600m at 50m height consistently, then I would be o.k. as this is within the realistic realms of UK VLOS rules.
Now that DJI have officially said / advised that I can return it to the shop if need be, I will test a bit more before making my mind up about it.
Equally, there response was that there's no hardware issue (whereas others seemingly have been told by DJI that they DID have a HW issue and as a result returned their drone).
Finally, am still hopeful they may realise that the CE-region signal-throttling is part-responsible for all those issues and, if so, can improve range via future FW update...

Thanks for the informative video! Did you recognize, that the position lights turn off while recording a video? That’s strange because during a night flight I must activate green lights. If that lights turn off while filming, I could get into trouble. Is there an option to manually overrun that behavior?

Using the smart controller shown in your video, how long does it take to fire up the mini 3 and controller and deploy it? I am looking for a quick deployable drone with a controller that has a built in viewer.
It seemed to solve my black out issues with the remote.
I have done the FW update, so I figure all is well. So far that has been the case till today. Very hot and humid (Southern Ontario) but wanted a early evening shot. Before Mini 3 Pro reached 40ft alt, I get this screen saying Lost connection, RETRY? This happened several times even though I had optimum RC attitude. Not confidence inspiring.
My experience has been when antennas are enclosed the range is not as good as an external antenna.
I can only go 1.5 miles in any direction also my zoom is blurry while locked in on a subject.

Was able to get mine to 2 miles but that was in a farm field with nothing around me expect for some power lines. I could've gone further but RTH kicked in and I had 4 bars all the way through. So, I think I did something.

I have heard this everywhere that after this update it's detects ur sd card speed...but I have got this message from my very first flight back in june...I was using the slower speed card and got this message that is too slow..still was able to record and didn't have any problems with footage...
What does / shows your Compass Display while you're flying straight forward...???

Didn't work for me. I have the aircraft firmware at 01.00.0201, RC at 01.01.0100, app 1.6.9. NO POSSIBILITY TO SELECT FREQUENCY AND STUCK AT CE ALL THE TIME.
Is there a way to increase the volume of the controller? I can barely hear the low battery warning and would like it to be louder
If you do a double swipe from the top of the screen it brings you to an options page where you can adjust various settings including the audio

The antennas on the Mini 2 controller were on top of the cell phone mount as well, I wonder if that aided signal strength?
Could very well be, all in all I’m still fairly pleased going to do a range test in a rural area in the next few days
Nice videos. I’ve notice the compass is not working correctly in the video. I’m having the same issue since the latest update to the RC controller. We definitely got issues with the new RC update . Take another look at your video I believe your compass is off. Let us know.
Somw are having luck by calibrating the compass on the remote to correct the issue. It seems DJI fixes one problem but creates another

Does the Mini 3 Pro RC work with the Mini 2?
My question is I was flying my mini three pro and the LEDs just went off. I was flying dusk getting some sunset pictures and the LED flashing things just went off
It’s crazy they had a software fix all along and allowed this issue to persist for so long for so many people.

Reading through all these comments it sounds like the software band aid improved it, but not entirely fixed yet. So it may still be originating from a hardware antenna issue.
What happened to the advertised 12 km distances? 1km is far from 10 km.
Recently became a DJI Mini 3 PRO owner and operated the drone for one day. It flies but...
Downloads are for the moment making trouble. The DJI stuff ask for "Network......". I've got Wifi, USB connection to the Pc, but nothing helps. What am I missing?

I fire up both the drone and RC Controller whenever there is a Firmware Update. Even this most recent update prompted me to keep the drone on during the installation of the update.

How do you get the follow me and wey point to work?
I’ve seen another videos and has and issued, the meters. When the drone leves, is marking the meters and jumps, it’s not continuously the meters. Check it

Hi how are you I got the dji mini 3 and so it says it can get as far 10 km but I think mine it’s on ce mode and I don’t know why , I’m in the us which means it should be in Fcc mode, who can I change it or what can I do , my controller is the simple one with the phone out that is hold by the antennas , does that matter ? Or how can I change it to fcc

Yeah I noticed mine after I got home and was editing the video together. It was a little wonky. Some are having problems calibrating as well.

Hmm... so, if this controller update did indeed fix the "switch to CE Mode" range issue - and it sure looks that way- maybe it's a combination of V01.00.0201 + Controller FW (V01.01.0100) plus finally bringing DJI Fly 1.6.9 onto the RC (RM330) Controller that completes the fix. I'm curious: did you fly RC-N1 with .0201 FW and still suffer poor range?
Unfortunately I never tested that before I updated I have a few things I’m gonna try with the old controller tomorrow and see what the differences are

Zero changes for me after update. In places where my Mini 2 flew for 2-3 km without any issues, MP3 gets into RTH after 600 meters
On the latest firmware (V01.00.0500) in CE mode, away from any dense population and around 800 meters I get warnings about the signal. I never make it past 1300 meters before RTH kicks in. No matter what area I fly in, I get the same results. Anyone else experiencing this?
Should I send it in for a checkup or is this just what it is? sure, I never need more range to do the job, but I think it should go way past this limit, right?

updated today but I have big problems. I've done 4 flights and all went very bad, the drone lost connection after 60 meters at 33 meters height. The longer flight was around 6 minutes.
Yeah that’s not good I would definitely contact DJI
@@AirPhotography I still see comments like this from users. So it may be too early to declare the problem fixed. Maybe they issued a software band aid for a fundamental hardware antenna problem that is not working for everyone.
Yeah I have read been reading complaints as well. As mentioned by others it could just be a Band-Aid fix it done and further tweaking may be necessary
AP...You were having issue where it would shift to CE mode when HP updated. I thought you would report on that?
I did I made several videos about it. I also uploaded a video on how to force it into FCC mode as a temporary fix until the firmware was updated. I’m just glad that they finally got it fixed. Seem to be affecting more people in Canada than anywhere else

Just purchased this and immediately has range issues 200m out no obstructions. Everything updated. Randomly stopping mid flight.
I just received mine and I had the same problem where it disconnected at 600 to 700 and now I can easily fly 2k in the same location...

I wanted to mention I have had no other odd situations with this drone since I received it July 6 2022 and it has been excellent using RTH and landing right on my pad. But I do go up 10 meters or 30 feet and hover for a few seconds. I know they will be giving us pinpoint landing as mine does this already. I do NOT have sideways glight disabled ever. That is probably why it helps.
I have never switched to ce mode either as I check often. I have manuaky tried both when it was brand new and it never made any difference at all as I could not get very far away over 1,000 feet. Now I have a lot more range and fly over businesses to try but it works well to 4,000 feet even flying at 200 feet right over the high power lines as well. That is 2 way at 28,000 volts! So the drone seems to improve even though it is not stated in updates.

Not sure if you’ve noticed but your compass is so far out it’s also happened to mine after the 1.6.9 update and many other peoples there is a favour open up a support ticket and speak to DJI
Yes after examining I have noticed some anomalies I’m heading back out this afternoon to do some more testing with a Compass. I’ve also read that some people can’t calibrate I’m gonna check into that as well to see if I have the same issue

I also can not calibrate just says DONE ✅ with no input , I have been in talks most of the day with DJI , I’ve also downgraded to 1.6.8 reset , upgraded back to 1.6.9 to no avail … I’ve just purchased the rc-n1 new of eBay to use with the iOS fly app to see if that is also broken. Should be here tomorrow morning

Wait!! You used the basic battery on that video? Id so, how you could Fly about 1,2km, but still have like 80% remaining?

@Lon Denard several channels and users notice the compass is off....even after calibrating
Mavic 2s 4.2 miles with standard controller I don't like the new controller because ot the Built-in antennas You get better range with extended antennas And plus I don't like the small screen I like my ipad Mini
