I am glad Spencer went from princess to prince charming. And I'm glad he had the sense to be genuinely sorry for how he treated the people in his life especially his poor mother.
Most college campuses have people trying to get students signed up for credit cards. Usually, this happens toward the beginning of the semester and they have tents set up and clip boards ready for students to sign their life away.
Years ago my friend was having trouble with her kids understanding where the money goes. I told her to make a chart to show her kid all the bills for the month. Then use monopoly money and envelopes to divvy up the cash. At the end of the month they got the point, plus mom noticed things she didn't realize before.
Good episode, and I am glad Spencer saw the light and turned his life around. However, it seems to me his Mom and Grandma were ENTIRELY to blame for Spencer becoming a Princess in the first place! They literally let that boy get away with murder. If they had been a lot more strict and showed him some tough love in his teenage years, Spencer would have turned out more balanced.
His girlfriend had tried telling him for so long and he had so little respect for her opinion and for her. If he had listened to her, he wouldn't have gotten so far into debt.
To call the credit card companies that keep extending this kid credit “dumb” is far too generous to an essentially predatory business. They do it because they know that they’re more likely to make a profit (from interest, often being extracted from family members or partners) than they are to realize a loss (which only happens if the kid declares bankruptcy, which is heavily stigmatized and not that common, or a consumer proposal, which is also a bit stigmatizing, not terribly common, and not as much of a loss for the credit card company).
