You could really tell that he was genuinely grateful and moved by their thunderous cheering. You could feel the affection in their applause, they really loved him.
@@TheTerryE - wow, you really dislike Betty. I'm sure that whatever she did to you wasn't that bad, considering the fact that she doesn't know your heateful arse.
I was 23 years old when this aired and recorded it on my New VCR. There were so many major movie stars then and compared to what we have now life is boring
Aww, this is terrific! Thank you for uploading this!! Lillian Gish was my favorite! Better to be able to watch it from a VHS copy than nothing at all! :)
If I remember correctly, both Davis and Cagney were returning after significant absences due to health issues. I think this added to the emotion of both the actors and the audience reception. I remember watching this back when I was in middle school. Thanks so much for posting it!
Nope, this was in 1982 , a year before Bette Davis had her strokes and mastectomy. You'll notice that she still looked healthy and vibrant in the clip. Audiences always went wild over her.
Wow, I am completely dumbfounded by this. I clearly taped this live back in 1982. Of course, I live in Canada, and it was probably our local affiliates did some cuts to allow more commercials. I always wondered why James Stewart had so many clips but not Davis and Cagney even though they were all equals. Thanks for this revelation.
...There are precious few stars left, or actors/actresses with star quality. This is especially true of those born after 1960. ...Yes, this statement reflects the fact that I'm old (mid-40's), and remember the pre-internet world of some level of decorum.
Hace 40 años aún estaban vivas todas estas leyendas: James Stewart, Bette Davis, Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, Lilian Gish, James Cagney, Myrna Loy, Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers. Gracias por darlo todo al cine, gracias por ser parte de nuestras vidas, de dedicarse a lo que tanto amaron y enseñarnos a amar al séptimo arte con sus magistrales interpretaciones que son parte de la Historia del Cine.
biographer richard schickel once opined, wisely that the "tough guy" tagg Cagney is associated with is something of a misnomer. the man's grace and gentle manner was always there for those who see pass the crude gangster archetype. love all the people honored here, but Cagney makes the heart beat faster. so poignant.
Oh, I wouldn't dare. This was in fact the entire clip when it first aired. At that time I also wished they could add more clips, like Jazabel for Davis, and Angels with Dirty Faces for Cagney.
As many in these comments have said, there was definitely something "other" or magical, unexplainable that made these people Stars with a capital S. The stars from the silents through to the 80s were definitely stars, as opposed to the personalities who just make movies today. There's a definite difference between them. Whatever they had, a lot of actors these days don't. There are some good actors today, but they're not the same. I don't know how time will judge today's celebrities, if they'll be as revered and beloved as the old stars.
I wish us ladies went back to wearing classy dresses like they did, real fashion, instead of being half naked, make em wonder whats under there, dont give it away so easy lol
Sorry, but Jezebel was in fact included, along with 4-5 other clips for Davis (Dark Victory, Now Voyager, etc), and Cagney's sequence featured clips from Ragtime and Mister Roberts, among others. I taped it back in '82 and know it by heart. Plus someone else posted it (the washed out copy) here on youtube, under the title: "Night of 100 Stars 1982 Salute to the Great Screen Legends".

Your missing for screen legends in night of 100 stars (1982 version ) Are Kirk Douglas Sidney pointier Cary Grant Yul brynner Charlton Heston Greer Garson
Many people here debated about who got the most applause and/or accolades. Just listen to the cheers as Katharine Hepburn steps out, there's no further debate needed. There's Stars, and then there are Legends!!!
That was so sweet. Jimmy looked so humbled and when he teared-up, so did I. I Love you, James Francis Cagney!!!
Wow! Cagney was brought to tears. God bless him. These were Classic actors, the Good old days!!❤️🔥👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The way James Cagney cried at his applause put a lump in my throat.
The fact he was the only star whom couldn't walk on made it even more poingnant...
You could really tell that he was genuinely grateful and moved by their thunderous cheering. You could feel the affection in their applause, they really loved him.
@@distortedfeaturesI still do
I was there! It was pandemonium when Cagney appeared. The most moving applause of the night
It seemed the biggest applause went to Bette Davis. She brought the house down
Oh my goodness, all brilliant, but Cagney set me off, what an actor what a man
My God, wonderful!!!! great stars, my favourit Bette Davis, but also Myrna Loy, Lillian Gish, James Cagney, James Stewart......
THE WORD LEGENDARY ONLY BEGINS TO DESCRIBE THESE WONDERFUL ARTISTS ! THEY ARE THE ICONS OF THE 20TH CENTURY ! I cry just looking at their greatness !
Bette Davis...worked that entire room and was clearly grateful for the applause and recognition.
It's all she had, the old bitch.

Davis had not gone through a mastectomy and a stroke yet. She was hit by them in 1983...
All gone now. When stars were larger than life.
WHATEVER STARS HAVE , THEY HAD IT AND THEY NEVER LOST IT , DEAR GOD !
Thank you for sharing this. It has always been my favorite Night100Stars. Wish I could see more...when all the actors couples were introduced.
The performers shown in this clip were truly real movie stars compared to what is called movie stars today.
Great to see this. James Cagney looked very moved. The ladies looked great, especially Ginger and Myrna.
Angel s with dirty face Cagney
i remember seeing this on tv. i mustve been 15. i remember tearing up when james cagney teared up.
Irreplaceable, magnificent...
Wow all so beautiful and talented ❤️💕❤️🤗
Wow! The great Cagney closing the show.
Happy birthday to Lillian Gish!!

Eight years later...the full show is on youtube, so here's the entire sequence, in the 2nd half of this clip:

Bette, Myrna, Gregory, James Stewart 😍😍😍😍
Myrna Loy certainly was a pretty lady, and a fine actress.
And these ones, among others of early Hollywood, are the real stars.

Bette Davis got the highest applause that night. She deserved it!

They couldn't pull off something like this in 2023... celebrity egos are WAY too big!
映画には夢と希望がある。だから、映画は大好き。勇気を貰えるから。
But you cut some of Davis' and Cagney's clips! ???
Sorry, I posted my Katharine Hepburn comments to the wrong show! Should be with the 1990 show, Forgive Me!!!
Almost everyone of these have gotten ned to the KENNEDY CENTER HONORARY AND AMERICAN GILM INSTITUTE.
No problem. That is bizarre, but the 'adding more commercials' thing sounds plausible...
Bette davis brought the house down!!!
Ginger's age is wrong she was 71 here she was born in 1911
The number beside her name was not her age, it was merely a sequence number of the order in which the movie stars appeared in the show.
Did Ingrid Bergman show up..I believe she was still alive during this albeit very fragile
What happened to 1-57 they aren't on here

Why did they put lillian gish 58?? It's not correct
That wasn't her age. She was the 58th star shown during the special.
