4:55 Barry is actually right, "refried beans" are generally only fried once, the name comes from a mistranslation/misunderstanding of "refrito" which means "re-heated" in Spanish not "re-fried" as the first time they are cooked they are boiled/steamed generally. Thus once fried they have only been fried once.
Not quite; "frito" does mean fried. However, the prefix "re-" is sometimes used as an intensifier in Spanish, so a better translation would "well-fried beans".
I think the reason Ben gave the camera that look is because in early sorted videos (like multiple sorted videos) they've talked about how refried beans are actually only fried once and it's a mistranslation.
@@IamQED Wikipedia says either, but seeing as refried beans are generally only warmed through in oil rather than really crispy like deep fried food is I think "re-heated" is a more accurate translation. "Well fried beans" would be far more crispy than refried beans are generally served.
Here in Ecuador refrito refers to the base mix for many meals, including onion, tomato, pepper, sometimes garlic, carrots, etc. like an Italian sofrito or French mirepoix. Most bean dishes here e.g. 'menestra' have a variation of refrito added to them, so I'm assuming it's similar all across Latin America and probably why the name exists.
One of these days, you should do a Pass It On where each of you grabs a random unlabeled can and where all of the selected cans make it to the final dish. It would be fun. For the audience.
This was in the most recent Christmas Pass It On Live although it wasn't an official part of the challenge on the Saturday PIO everyone did choose two random unlabelled cans and asked the audience to vote on which can to use and then had to use it.
Ben patiently nodding as Barry gives him a rambly explanation of what he's cooking is the energy I want my friends to bring to my infodumps in the new year. I'm also definitely gonna use "here we are: vs "there you go" as a comparison in my head for how my life is going. Thank you for that Ben!
Definitely up for seeing Ben deal with the three left over tins! Especially given the faintly panicked smile at the end there :D Simple way to handle the number of pans etc used - put Jamie on washing up duty.

@@captainace1277 Mike got screwed by the time restriction in the apron battle based on Barry getting the same badge twice and not having another removed that they said should have been. So the entire event was unfairly biased to begin with. Also over the years I have watched sorted, Barry has never done exceptionally well in general. Ben seems to almost always be biased in his favour based on the flavour profile and not how good the cooking was. Every so often he comes up with a good thing, but when that fails then the result is below average. Jamie and Mike both tend to get average to above average more often than not, so unless it's a measure of their absolute top potential only, then Barry never deserved the apron. I guess you could say he was better on the day, but that is meaningless if he averages below the others on most other days.
Jamie deserved the win. Question and suggestion. Q. How many times can Barry mess up before he loses his sous chef apron. And suggestion: the chef should make a dish with the final 3 cans. To show them how it’s done.
I swear every battle sort of thing, Jamie's food is 100% the one I, as a really normal normal, would want to eat. I do really love this series. It reminds me of a show we have in America called "Chopped," which is a similar concept of cooking with mystery ingredients. The difference is, on Chopped, the contestants are all trained, professional chefs, whereas Baz, Mike, and Jamie are far more relatable to watch and they end up making the kind of thing I would do if I was on the show.

What I find most interesting and intriguing about these videos requiring the chefs/normals to create a dish using 3 tinned ingredients chosen at random is the difference in complexity of the dishes the normals plan with their ingredients and what plans the chefs create!
@@tubbziMalone Gotta fully agree, here. Jamie is the embodiment of a "sous" chef, despite his audacity at times. Mike has the most desire to learn. Barry has the most talent, but doesn't apply himself hard enough.
