The best of the Genoese savory pies is the legendary "Torta Pasqualina (that is, prepared during the Easter period)", made with artichokes. In Savona they also make farinata bianca, made with wheat flour instead of chickpeas. A must-try specialty is the famous pansotti in walnut sauce, the best of which are found in the heights of Sori, the focaccette di stracchino, also in the heights of Sori, as well as the authentic focaccia di Recco with cheese. The one sold in Genoa is not worth a cigar and it is forbidden to call it focaccia di Recco or even the Recco type

Hi Laura, I recently discovered your channel and I'm enjoying catching up on your travels. At the moment, I'm just down the road from you in Pisa. The streets here are just as noisy but at least the weather is a bit brighter! As regards the most underrated city in Italy, I believe that title should go to Bologna. Apart from the food and the sights and the food and the history and the food, you have easy access to the nearby cities of Modena, Parma, Ferrara and Venice. Bologna is definitely one of the best cities to base yourself if you plan on staying more than a few days.

hiii! You had such a kind view on my city Genoa, that is not one of the most touristy places and can because of this be sometimes difficult to appreciate. Their changing the roof in Galleria Mazzini! The iron work was getting too old. If you are thinking of visiting again, I would suggest going inside the Aquarium as well (it's the biggest in Europe) going sightseeing in Spianata Castelletto (there's another lift), and also maybe trying the Parco di Villa Pallavicini, in Genova Pegli. It's typically mediterranean, but also very peculiar. there is also the Cimitero di Staglieno, which is like a free open air sculpture museum. Additionally, if you get in Via Balbi during the work week, while the university is open, you can explore the university buildings as well. Thank you for your video!

Hi Laura! As a Genovese I found your guide pretty spot-on! You just missed Spianata Castelletto which is the best viewpoint within the city center and from your editing I had the feeling you walked the sketchiest paths from one site to another... very kind of you not pointing that out 😅... great picks of street food though!!

Agreed. A trip to Nervi (town's extremity furthest east) would also have been worth making... Or the sight from the Rotonda di Carignano (essentially a lookout point located on the omonimous round terrace), but one cannot cram all of Genoa's charming places in too short a time. Next time, then 😀 So sad that I am preparing to leave Genoa for good in a couple weeks 😔

This is a very nice and dense city. I visited Monaco, which is maybe 30 or 45 minutes by train if I remember correctly. I was traveling from Monaco to Rome and then like at 1am we arrived in Genoa. We stayed at the train station for one whole hour and we left exactly at the same time we arrived, at 1am. It was the daylight savings day from summer to autumn, and we had to stay one whole hour at the Genoa train station just looking at the clock to let go that inexistent hour. Strange method but that was the way to adjust the train schedules I imagine in most countries in Europe.

Oh and Boccadasse was used in the movie "Luca". Anyways, next time you have a trip in the city I suggest to visit also "Palazzi Rolli" in via Garibaldi or "Villa Pallavicini" in Pegli (Pegli it's similar to Corso Italia), but if you want to see the less urban side of Genoa I even suggest Rapallo, Camogli, Sestri Levante, Santa Margherita Ligure and the parks of Nervi. Little pieces of heaven where to have a pleasant day, have a walk and take a break from the stress of urban life. It's really therapeutic and don't even take much time to travel there on train from Brignole or Principe.
Oh and I almost forgot! Nice video! :)

Nice video and it's always good to see someone who comes from abroad to review Genoa. Indeed, we are too often overlooked by the main tourist routes.
The only criticism I feel is related to the fact that only the city center was visited.
Genoa is 20 Km long and almost every neighborhood has its own ancient churches, historic palaces and villas, parks, etc ... indeed the various Genoese neighborhoods were nineteen independent municipalities until 1926, when they were unified with the central one, the historical Genoa. Some suffered from strong building speculation in the 60s / 70s (a period of intense immigration from the central and southern Italy) which makes the town seem a continuous whole, but anyway they have maintained a strong identity, just think that even today those who live outside the center say "I go to Genoa" to indicate the travel to the old town.
However, despite having passed almost a century, the vast majority of tourist guides / television documentaries / the same institutional tourist promotion, seem to be interested only in what is present in the area of the "historical" (central) Genoa, neglecting the more decentralized districts, so unfortunately it's a generalized problem.
If you were to return, I would like to recommend the "Villa Duchessa di Galliera" in Voltri with its large historical park, the "Parco Villa Durazzo Pallavicini" in Pegli (unfortunately this isn't free), the "Sanctuary of Nostra Signora del Monte Gazzo" above the neighborhood of Sestri Ponente, from which you can see a panorama that sweeps for a good part of the west ligurian coast (there is also a small speleological museum), and the "Anita Garibaldi promenade" in the Nervi district (unfortunately in recent years a very lacking in maintenance), with its parks and art museums.
Staying in the city center, there is also the Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto lift, near the Principe station, which is often the destination of groups of civil engineers and public transport fan, due to its particular conformation (a horizontal section, followed by a vertical one), which leads to the museum of cultures of the D'Albertis Castle (a 19th century palace built in the likeness of a little medieval castles).

Thanks for all of the tips! I will definitely be back to Genoa so I'll add these spots to my list! When you are visiting somewhere for only two short days and the center has as much to offer as Genoa, it is hard to get out to the other neighborhoods to see more, but I would be interested in discovering beyond the historical center when I return, thank you!

Just came back from a 10 day solo trip to Italy, France & Spain. Part land part MSC cruise. Pro tip::: Pack light!! I can’t express that enough. So much walking, so many stairs and uneven cobble stone terrain. It’s ok to be fashionably stylish but do dress comfortable and plan to rewear your clothes. It’s ok to wash a few outfits and wear them again. Also.. if in Italy specifically Genova. Never enter a bus without a ticket. You cannot pay on the bus. The police comes on the bus and asks for your ticket. If you don’t produce a ticket you will be forced to pay €67 later or€47 on the spot by credit card. The will not budge with tears or pleading about being an English speaking tourist. Happened to me and had I let it get to me it certainly would have ruined my trip 2 days in. For the trains make sure that if you buy your ticket at the station that you validate it at one of the many machines before boarding. If you bought it online make sure that the pass is downloaded to your wallet or you have a screenshot of it. For taxi drivers always navigate the route with them on your speakerphone or they will take you the longest route possible to Jack up the fare.

How long were lines to travel due to COVID?
Here in Sydney, Australia - you have to arrive 5 hrs prior to travel.
Long multiple lines, to check vaccinations, check in baggage and customs. CROWDED.

They were basically back to normal as far as I can tell. Pre-Christmas it was still pretty bad, especially when I flew to the UK, but now traveling within the EU is very easy again so I got to each airport only about an hour and a half before the flight.

So beautiful and so old! Hope to visit one day. One thing so frustrating to me though, is the scourge of graffiti 😤 I don’t get the narcissistic mindset that compels people to deface property that doesn’t belong to them, turning beauty to ugliness.
