Just found your channel recently, and I've been very entertained. Great channel. Deep Blue Sea was the first shark movie I saw in the theaters. My sister was manager of a movie theater. I worked across street from it and would go over after work on preview nights. Midnight showings back then were for employees. They had to splice the reels together and watch them to make sure it was done correctly. A family friend was previewing this one, and no one wanted to watch it with him. I decided to stick around. I loved Jaws and Jaws 2, didn't like Jaws 3 or Revenge, but figured give a shark movie a shot. I didn't catch the license plate Easter egg. I did predict the Samuel L Jackson death though. He started his speech, and I turned to my friend, "hey, they always have a speech like this in a movie. It's inspirational, and gets them through it. Not saying it'll happen, he is standing somewhat close to that water though, wouldn't it be cool if a shark jumped out and got him?" "That would be funny, but no one does that in a movie like this." After it happened he looked at me, "you aren't allowed anymore 'cool' ideas during this movie." We both still jumped from it. I broke his 'cool idea' rule later in the movie. You mentioned the mama Mako death being a straight rip off of Jaws, did you notice all of them were? First shark is killed by a gas explosion (Jaws) Second shark is killed by electricity (Jaws 2) Third shark underwater explosive (Jaws 3) After the first two sharks died, I said to my friend, "they have not once mentioned underwater explosives, but they're going to find some underwater explosives and use that to kill the third shark." "They won't do that. Why would you think that?" Told him the Jaws endings, "and they're at an old WWII submarine base. They'll find some explosives, watch." When they found the explosives, he just looked at me with a "are you fucking serious" look. I still love the movie. It is so bad, but so damn entertaining. I loved sharks as a kid, Bull Sharks are my favorite, and they were followed by Makos. I was expecting the sharks to be Great Whites, and was pleasantly surprised to see them go with Makos.
Hi Kris, I am a double amputee, and I had to do a stint in rehab afterwards. When the scene with the shark biting the guys arm off everyone in the room grabbed different parts of their bodies and squealing! LOL
Every time I see that scene where the sharks first swim backwards on camera and SLJ says “tell me I didn’t just see that” I’m convinced he’s talking about the sharks swimming backwards. But then he says “the sharks recognized that gun” and I’m like 🤦🏼♀️ But yes, Deep Blue Sea is one of my favorites. And LL Cool J and Thomas Jane were the two who definitely should have survived. Satisfying ending.
Rewatching this 2 years later, because I've just rewatched the movie. I remember going to see it at the cinema when I was 12, and I loved it, so I still do, because... nostalgia.
hey, weird suggestion but, my little cousins always watch the octonauts (like i did as a child), from what i can gather its actually pretty accurate. However i'd like to know what you think :)
Hi! I think I was definitely the generation before Octonauts, so missed it, but from the small amount that I have seen it does appear streets ahead of most other children's education programmes. Perhaps I could do an Octonauts review episode in season 3 of Shark Bytes? Specifically an episode that contains shark info!

I agree with your ratings for Deep Blue Sea! I love that movie! I do love quite a few shark movies like Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, Blue Demon (it was a shark horror/sci-fi movie that was released back in 2004. It was a cheesy low budget film but Blue Demon is still one of my favorites). I've always loved sharks and shark movies. There's just something about them that has always grabbed my attention. I wish I was smart enough to go to college and become a marine biologist. I most likely won't ever get that chance. Anyway I'm glad I came across this video. I love watching shark scientists and marine biologists react or critique shark movies.
Thanks Terry - i'm glad you enjoyed. I've never seen Blue Demon before, perhaps i should add it to the movie commentary list! What I would say is never give up on your dreams, if you want something badly enough you'll always find a way. I'll hopefully be making some "How i became a shark scientist" videos next season, these may be of interest to you! So i hope to see you again in the comments sections for the videos :)

Need to do all the Jaws movies. Love to see your reaction on Jaws: The Revenge due to its being bad and that infamous Banana boat scene. Another one is 47 Meters Down: Uncaged! So dumb but fun. Love the shark carnage with Nicole being ripped in half by two sharks. Do sharks even fight over prey?
Hahah you're right, I will 100% be doing all the Jaws sequels, and definitely the two 47 metres down films - so much content to rip into! Hope you subscribe to the channel :D
This movie was what instigated my love of sharks, and may be the reason why makos are my favorite living species of shark. Those teeth were so cool! Their speed, sleek bodies, and graceful movement are just absolutely beautiful!
I'm only 3 minutes in and I already want to say thank you for your bit about dermal denticles - I have watched a few (more than I care to admit, lol) marine biologist movie reactions and you are the first to mention that the shark's skin IS in fact smooth in one direction. I remember learning that in marine biology years ago but literally everyone else has just said "it's like sandpaper", leaving out the directional tidbit. It's the little things in life :). (Oh, and also thank you for saying it means "skin teeth", not "tiny teeth" like someone else did....)
Just subscribed after watching a few of these. I totally like that you can differentiate between an entertaining film and a rubbish shark depiction. lots of giggles and information. Thanks and keep it up!

It’s just ludicrous in so many respects but honestly, one of my favourite shark movies. Thomas Jayne, LL Cool J, Samuel L Jackson, and crazy sharks totally make up for the ridiculous plot and Saffron Burrows’ wooden acting.
Great vid, learnt a few things but funnily enough Imma point out how around halfway into the video you said “that’s about 74km/hr for our American friends”. I’m not American but I’m pretty sure they’re the ones who count speed/distance in the imperial system
Not sure if anyone noticed that the 3 sharks in Deep Blue Sea ALL 3 sharks died the same way Jaws sharks were killed in the first 3 movies! Explosion Jaws 1, Electrocution Jaws 2 and Explosion Jaws 3. I have seen this movie 100 times today was the first time I heard about license plate and Hooper from Jaws. Very cool thanks!!!!
@thedailyjaws sent me! One thing I think you missed on this. The queen shark was ripping the guy in half, yes, but what it was REALLY doing was destroying the bank of electrical breakers they just switched on. It was deliberately smearing him all over the wall. Then it spit him out and didn't even eat him!🤣🤣
Love Deep Blue Sea, such a fun movie. I thought the same thing watching this. About them swimming backwards. But they were genetically modified. But still ....
I watched this in a Harlem theater when it first came out, and the place went absolutely nuts after the Samuel Jackson scene. One of the best theater experiences I've ever had.
Oh come on, the sharks swim backwards to show that they have developed skills through their 'treatment' that normal sharks just do not possess... Can't know them down for that! I'm with you on the watchability (yes that is a word 😅). I love it! I've watched it so many times, one of my favourite shark films!
The funny thing about you talking about the sharks swimming backwards being impossible is that one of the characters straight up said as much 5 seconds after the fact more or less.
There is a movie I am hoping to see, it's called Alphas, a Shark vs Orca movie (I think the only one) with a good actor Sam Worthington, still waiting for the release date but when it comes out, I bet it's gonna be great and I think you might like it too Enjoyed the video btw, recently subscribed 🦈
Thanks so much for subscribing, I had heard about this film coming out, but like you not sure on the release date? Looks like it might make for a good movie commentary in the future!
One of the most entertaining movies of all time. Holy mother of christ I love Deep Blue Sea so goddamn much. I prefer The Shallows by just a little bit and I do prefer both that and Deep Blue Sea over Jaws. I adore Jaws but I just prefer these two. And there’s something so frightening about sharks in a hallway. Deep Blue Sea STILL being the only film to ever use this concept is just ridiculous. Complete Bollocks. And god the first 30 seconds or so of that score is sooo haunting. In my opinion it’s the best score in a shark film. And come on we all know how good that Samuel L. Jackson kill is. It’s honestly a masterclass in effective jump scares. It’s completely unexpected and it really set a new bar for jump scares. Sadly we still get truly awful jump scares in some horror films. (Side-note: the characters in the film mention that sharks can’t swim backwards. It’s a side effect of their new biological make-up and enhanced intelligence. This also goes hand in hand with why they are able to stay still, which by the way I love that they’re so smart that the massive one at the end stood still waiting to attack knowing that the other guy was going to jump in and try to save her. And maybe it also did that to make him watch her die? Anyway it’s a movie explanation but it’s a good one. It’s the same reason for their massive size. Admittedly it’s ridiculous that none of the other characters notice this and freak out when they find out that Dr. McCallister was using growth hormones on the sharks.) But yeah Deep Blue Sea is seriously great and I watch it every year.
A few people have mentioned this to me actually, i think i'd really enjoy it, I'll need to read up on how to stream videos while playing xbox because it could be a lot of fun
Hello mate i got a question for you, does mackerel shark is the only shark family that cant stop mid water meaning they have to constantly swimming in order not to get drown?
Hi Leonellus, I would safely say there are no shark species that can physically stop moving midwater column and stay completely stationary. The manta ray is one of the only species i can think of, off the top of my head that performs a somewhat "hover" motion mid water, to allow itself to be cleaned by cleanerfish. There are lots of sharks that can stay stationary however on the seafloor and pump water across their gills using their spiracles. Hope this answers your question, and please do feel free to ask as many as you'd like!
Oh my goodness! When this movie came out my little brother was like 9, I believe. My dad and I were going to see this movie, and my little brother begged us to take him too. However, My brother was scared of everything. I tried to explain to him he wouldn’t like it. But he kept begging, so my dad finally said yes. I think we were 10 mins in or so when my brother said he was going to use the restroom and he was still gone. I went to check on him and found him sitting on a bench in the theatre lobby. I asked him if he was sick or something. Nope, he was scared to death. 🤦🏽♀️ Refused to come back in. He didn’t sleep well for weeks, constantly having nightmares. 10 mins, he only watched 10 mins of the movie! Years later I took my family to Hawaii, for a nice family vacation. He was now like 17 years old. This boy refused to go into the ocean past his ankles. And would only swim in the hotels pool. It all stemmed back to the movie, Deep Blue. He still has an irrational fear of sharks. 🤦🏽♀️
Not a comment on the movie or your reaction, but I recently saw a clip of a Great white taking down a whale by attacking it's tail, waiting for it to weaken from blood loss before biting into it's head and drowning the whale. Is this common or a technique for great whites or an isolated incident?
Hi Henrik, I think I know the video you're referring to! I can say that this is a pretty rare incident, thats likely isolated. It is the first time this behaviour has been caught on film, however that doesn't necessarily mean this is the first time its happened. Would be very interesting to see this behaviour again for sure!
I saw this film 29 years ago...and saw some scenes again last week. I agree 8/10 for entertainment I think dr. Susan felt really awful (and relieved) when she electrified a shark, in order to save herself, but pretty bitter and guilty cause she killed a shark. She almost cries when she see's it dead floating in the messy lab. Poor shark 😢. It's a touching scene ❤
I know there was a National Geo show called Shark Wranglers about scientists catching sharks to tag them. But there are actual shark wranglers as a job. They are part of an Australian tuna fishing company that catch tuna in a circular net and tow them back to Australia live. On the trip back small sharks get into this net and these guys go inside the net and 'wrangle' them out over the top of the net instead of killing them. Watched a documentary about it. These guys are nuts!
i love marine creatures including sharks, this channel needs to grow bigger. if i may be so bold, could you make a video about shark's misconceptions and myths? you could go more in depth analysis in each and every myth.. also, i've been curious about those saving shark videos, releasing fish hooks, saving beached sharks, i mean..you could react on em and explain what should and shouldnt be done in those kind of situations..please?
Biggest question is why they used dangerous species of sharks for genetic engineering and not harmless species like whale shark or basking shark... much easier to feed and no danger of being eaten... but then we wouldn't have movie so...

Yes they do mention it, although my dramatic reaction looks like its drowned that out hahahah. Looking at the science behind it though i'm not quite sure how modifying their brains, also changes the capabilities of their physical morphology. Sure it could make them smarter and hunt more tactically etc... but physical changes in how they move? I'm not convinced! It is a movie after all :P
I remember that when i watched this movie with my dad and my big brother when the VCD goes worldwide. My dad bought the VCD of it and decided to watched together with a 6 year old me. And yes, i was terrified, specially on the bite the arm off scene. I actually forced the vcd out from the player and throw it away. I'm surprised my dad didn't kill me for it... probably realized i'm too young for it.
Having a bit of a shark bytes binge as I'm a new subscriber, but I thought that the film was pretty neat as it wasn't a great white as the villain but a mako

First shark is killed by a gas explosion (Jaws)
Second shark is killed by electricity (Jaws 2)
Third shark underwater explosive (Jaws 3)
After the first two sharks died, I said to my friend, "they have not once mentioned underwater explosives, but they're going to find some underwater explosives and use that to kill the third shark." "They won't do that.
But then he says “the sharks recognized that gun” and I’m like 🤦🏼♀️
But yes, Deep Blue Sea is one of my favorites.
Specifically an episode that contains shark info!
yessssssssssssssssssss
Brilliant analysis i am from the era of jaws went to see it twice when it came out with my best friend who is no lo ger with us and i remember everyone jumping out of thier seats when the bead appears from the hole in the fushermans biat happy days and of course it was filmed on marthas vinyard. Love this chanel sharks are facinating animals . Its mankind thats the biggest threat to them and all animals banning shark fin soup would be a start great presentation i am a big fan you should be on television with your own show .
Do Shark Tale next!!!!!
Shark Tale - what a great shout, its now on the list!
I’m not a big movie going and never knew there were soooo many shark movies. But I love these commentaries you do. Makes me want to find a copy of the movie. 🦈
Glad you're enjoying them!!
‘You ate my bird’ 💥 💥
Love those LL cool J one liners
You're more than welcome Seth, glad you enjoyed the video!
Just subscribed after watching a few of these. I totally like that you can differentiate between an entertaining film and a rubbish shark depiction. lots of giggles and information. Thanks and keep it up!
Great to have you onboard Frank, hope you're enjoying the channel!
The animatronic sharks the made for this movie were VERY cool... for their time.
The CGI wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't ground breaking either.
Love your content! Have recently discovered your channel and love all your in depth analaysis. I am a big shark fan and love to hear about the more in depth science behind a shark. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for subscribing, great to hear you enjoy the channel! Please do let any friends know who you think might enjoy it too, and keep dropping by in the comments to let me know your thoughts on the videos :D
I just finished watching the Meg reaction and thought about this movie and saw this in my recommended perfect
Hope you enjoyed it!
It’s just ludicrous in so many respects but honestly, one of my favourite shark movies. Thomas Jayne, LL Cool J, Samuel L Jackson, and crazy sharks totally make up for the ridiculous plot and Saffron Burrows’ wooden acting.
Yayy thanks so much for doing my request!
You're more than welcome, keep suggesting more!
Great vid, learnt a few things but funnily enough Imma point out how around halfway into the video you said “that’s about 74km/hr for our American friends”. I’m not American but I’m pretty sure they’re the ones who count speed/distance in the imperial system
A few people have pointed this out to me hahaha, I clearly can't get my head round units of measurement!
I, as an American, can only dream of us someday using a measurement system that actually makes sense... Perhaps someday! ;P
Yup and the correct explosion type. Gas explosion for the first kill and grenade explosion for the 3rd kill.
This is my favorite Shark Movie ever. Hands down.
@thedailyjaws sent me! One thing I think you missed on this. The queen shark was ripping the guy in half, yes, but what it was REALLY doing was destroying the bank of electrical breakers they just switched on. It was deliberately smearing him all over the wall. Then it spit him out and didn't even eat him!🤣🤣
Queen Mako's evil plans know no-bounds hahahah!
@@SHARKBYTES lol!
This video made me laugh out loud multiple times. Keep it up!
Thank you!
Love Deep Blue Sea, such a fun movie. I thought the same thing watching this. About them swimming backwards. But they were genetically modified. But still ....
Yeah true, I know the mention it, but it never made any sense to me 😂
In an interview, Saffron laughed about how the filmmakers contrived that scene just to get her in her underwear. :)
i'll have to have a look to see if i can find the interview!
@@SHARKBYTES May have been on the DVD.
@@Christobanistan I've got some digging to do in the old DVD collection then!
Jaws + Jurassic Park = Deep Blue Sea.
so true
A helicopter flew over my house as the opening scene started lol that was trippy
I watched this in a Harlem theater when it first came out, and the place went absolutely nuts after the Samuel Jackson scene. One of the best theater experiences I've ever had.
This commentary gives me a solid lol every time 😂
Oh come on, the sharks swim backwards to show that they have developed skills through their 'treatment' that normal sharks just do not possess... Can't know them down for that! I'm with you on the watchability (yes that is a word 😅). I love it! I've watched it so many times, one of my favourite shark films!
hope you get more subscribers my dude! enjoyed this one lol
Thank you! Remember to share the channel with anyone you think might enjoy it, and keep on engaging with the videos as and when you feel like it :D
The funny thing about you talking about the sharks swimming backwards being impossible is that one of the characters straight up said as much 5 seconds after the fact more or less.
deffo agree with your ratings! 👏🏻👏🏻 also how sick is the ending credits rap
Can't beat a solid 90's LL cool J rap, especially when its about sharks
Just want to say that you should have much more subs. You are doing a great job keep it up, its only a matter of time.
Thank you - glad to hear you're enjoying the channel!
" I remember the scene as a kid" thanks for making me feel old😂
You need way more subscribers, at least 10k (hopefully by Spring season)
Thank you!
This was one of my favorite shark movies 🦈 growing up! Glad you enjoyed it too! 😅
8:27 I almost fell off my chair laughing xD Gotta rewatch this right away
Cracked me up, swimming with the Tiger shark removing the plate out of its mouth, only for it to be food, he was a show off 👀🤣
There is a movie I am hoping to see, it's called Alphas, a Shark vs Orca movie (I think the only one) with a good actor Sam Worthington, still waiting for the release date but when it comes out, I bet it's gonna be great and I think you might like it too
Enjoyed the video btw, recently subscribed 🦈
It'd be really cool and interesting to see you play Maneater. Its a game where you play as a shark and id love to hear what you got to say!
I love shark biology
Glad to hear it!
Another great video!
Thanks so much - please do share with any friends who you think might enjoy it!
I just found your channel Love it!! I absolutly get my shark fix 😁👍 The most beautiful fish in the ocean 💖
Thank you so much, remember to share the channel with anyone else who you think might enjoy it!
@@SHARKBYTES I have alredy done that 😁👍💖
@@4everMrsB Brilliant - thank you!
As a kid I watched jaws so many times. I somehow missed this film. I have to watch it now.
I really like your movie commentaries
Theyre interesting
I've learned a bit although I did know a few facts before watching
Glad to hear you enjoyed! Thanks :)
You said Jaws & Deep Blue Sea are in your top 3 shark movies but what's the 3rd? Love the video btw
I love the movie, but I love the facts you added which were cool. 💙
The thing is in the fillm the scientist are equaly baffled at the sharks swimming backwards
Thats right, it is briefly mentioned in the film!
Hi all! I just subscribed to the channel. Just wondering if Sharkbytes has seen the Australian shark movie called Reef?
Not a comment on the movie or your reaction, but I recently saw a clip of a Great white taking down a whale by attacking it's tail, waiting for it to weaken from blood loss before biting into it's head and drowning the whale. Is this common or a technique for great whites or an isolated incident?
Hi Henrik, I think I know the video you're referring to! I can say that this is a pretty rare incident, thats likely isolated. It is the first time this behaviour has been caught on film, however that doesn't necessarily mean this is the first time its happened. Would be very interesting to see this behaviour again for sure!
One of my fave B movies!
A definite cult classic
I liked this movie! And your review.
Thanks Pamela!
I saw this film 29 years ago...and saw some scenes again last week. I agree 8/10 for entertainment
I think dr. Susan felt really awful (and relieved) when she electrified a shark, in order to save herself, but pretty bitter and guilty cause she killed a shark. She almost cries when she see's it dead floating in the messy lab. Poor shark 😢. It's a touching scene ❤
Where have you been? I’ve never laughed so hard in my life.
I've been here the whole time!! :D - glad you enjoyed!
You left out the greatest movie quote ever from LL Cool Jay about being cooked in his own oven
All time favorite shark movie
"You ate my bird..." 😂
i love marine creatures including sharks, this channel needs to grow bigger.
if i may be so bold, could you make a video about shark's misconceptions and myths? you could go more in depth analysis in each and every myth..
also, i've been curious about those saving shark videos, releasing fish hooks, saving beached sharks, i mean..you could react on em and explain what should and shouldnt be done in those kind of situations..please?
Great ideas Faisal! I'd 100% love to do some videos on those, I'll make sure to add them to my list. Hope to continue to see you on the channel :)
"From hell's heart I stab at thee!" is what LL should have shouted as he stabbed the shark with the cross.
The movie was both scary and hilariously funny 😂
Love your channel
Thank you!!
Biggest question is why they used dangerous species of sharks for genetic engineering and not harmless species like whale shark or basking shark... much easier to feed and no danger of being eaten... but then we wouldn't have movie so...
This is such a good point, they didn't have to be mako's
I love this show! Please do The shallows next.
Thank you so much, The Shallows might be coming up this season... Keep your eyes peeled!
What could possibly go wrong with interfering with mother nature? Um, everything? Jurassic Park meet Deep Blue Sea.
Hahahah what a movie crossover!
I can't wait for you Meg 2 review.
Just wanted you to know, we in the US don't use the metric system. We use inches, feet and yards. Love your videos. Love sharks! ❤️🦈❤️
Thank you!! I’ve been getting pelters from the Americans for this 😂😂
lol, I'm constantly using a converter whilst watching these. Was confused when he said kilometers for Americans. I know miles :D
This movie was directed by Renny Harlin who is actually from my country. IMO, one of his best blockbuster films if not the best.
I do really enjoy deep blue sea as a film to be fair
This was by far my favorite shark movie as a kid I loved jaws too and as an adult I’d put that first but when I was a child there was something about deep blue sea that I was just absolutely fascinated with.
Shark tried to LL cook Jay 😂
Shark Wranglers are REAL!!! They’re the ppl on large net fishing vessels that get in the water and free sharks trapped in giant fishing nets!!
Shark Disentanglers! Has a ring to it
04:17 did u watch it with sound? If I remember well they were talking about them swimming backwards at that moment in the movie. Like, the team was surprised by it as well. Still bad of course, but you make it sound like the movie didnt even mention it.
Hhahaha - why did we all watch this film when we were SO young!
Kristian using the term Sam J here is great.
Every time I see that insult of a tiger shark animatronic I fly into a huge rant
Having a bit of a shark bytes binge as I'm a new subscriber, but I thought that the film was pretty neat as it wasn't a great white as the villain but a mako
Totally agree Grace! At least they used a different shark this time
Nope its absolutely a white shark combined with mako.
