Hey mate, great vid and a timely one for me as about to enter a 56km with 2.5k vert at the end of March. A couple of questions if you have the time. How much weight do you put into cycling training for ultras? I’m fortunate to live at the bottom of some 1k vert road climbs and thinking cycling them could add some good leg strength for my flat road running legs. Or do you think invest all available time in running? The race I’m doing is tailwind and water at the aids, I normally use maurten these days. Do you think carrying 320 drink mix packets and chucking them into my soft flask with the water at aids is too laboursome/time consuming? Would you try to train with tailwind rather?

What's your thoughts on hiking intervals? Doing effort/HR based hard hikes in terrain where the gradient is too steep to be runnable?
My first ultra is alot of elevation (5600m at 75k in july). Since the ascends aren't really runnabel i think it could be an idea to do some threshold ish stuff up a small (500m) mountain and then do intervals running the technical downhills as well? Maybe work up to 5x10min or so?

It's absolutely a great idea. The longer you go, the more useful power hiking becomes and of course especially on tough gradients. The more practice you get at that, the more efficient you'll be.

@leegrantham thanks as always! I also have a nice 1,1k hill I use which starts at 16% and after 400m it goes to 6ish. I like doing this(takes me 6m 45s ish atm) since it forces me to speed up later in the reps since it evens out, when keeping the same spews at rep 4 is mighty tempting because everything is starting to hurt (in a good way)
