Nayakan movie was the first movie I cried while watching and felt something very new way of storyline, screenplay, the music is superb not able to praise in words. Here after I was so crazy to watch Mani Ratnam movies till now.

Renduthukum sambanthame illa bro. Those movies doesn't aim to be like nayakan. They are just meant for entertainment and comparing them with nayakan doesn't makes any sense at all. You can say that nayakan is a masterpiece without comparing it with any of those.
Comparison, it's an Era, u can't compare Nayakan to any movie, vice versa
The director, actors, cameraman, art director and editor all had a reference for the film. It is Maestro Ilayaraja who had given those five unforgettable gems, each completely from one another, delivered on his own. The masterpiece by the Maestro.
Have to disagree on the dialogues., This was one of Balakumaran's best work. Dialogues were very organic, natural and DO stand the test of time. Much better than the dialogues in MR's later films, if I might add.

@@tallurirahul5077 I'm telling this as a viewer. It's entirely subjective, but creators can also be biased and those biases might not correspond to those of their audience. Personally I like Balakumaran's dialogues, both here and in Pudhupettai.
Mani ratnam clearly mentioned it was Kamal, ganagaraj and Delhi Ganesh owned the dialogue.. whereas others did not.. so he says like that.. he wants emotion of all characters to be on that level
@@kannann4515 : agree with you. Writer BALAKUMARAN sirs dialogues was a big trump card for Nayagan. Not just Janakaraj, kamalhassan or Delhi Ganesh owned it,.. everyone on screen in Nayagan owned it ,...be it ARS,..Nizhagal Ravi,..kamals daughter,.. Nazer,...those Telugu speaking brothers acting against kamal,...Vijayan sir,...well I can go gaga about the whole movie for hours together to disapprove that dialogues needed a tweek. As a ardent Nayagan fan, sorry, don't agree with the creator ManiRatnam ji on this part alone.
Current generation might not like or in capable of appreciting the dialogues. Thats all MR is trying to say. ( test of times)

nowadays there is lot of buzz about theme music.. 35 years back Maestro created themes for every situation n character.. themes for love, hero, villain, children.. Raaja took the core tune of Thenpaandi seemayile and created variations of same for some of these themes.. there is no comparison to this movie especially with run of the mill mindless masalas like Manidan ..

Recently K.T.Kunjumon said in an interview that he was the one who bought the Chennai district rights for Nayagan from his good friend Late.G.Venkateshwaran and said that to everyones shock he lost ₹50,000 by distributing Nayagan,..now, Manithan atleast did not poke holes in distributors pocket like Nayagan

Manithan may be a commercial masala film ! But Rajini did act movies like Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai, Mullum Malarum with more natural acting! He proved in that genre as well !

While people are praising RRR and KGF, those movies will not have such an impact in the long run. Those were only the mere victories of their production houses and nothing more.
Most blockbusters are like that. They are only talked about how money it made at box office at their time of release. But great movies are always talked how much impact it had on people even after decades. There is a reason why Hollywood is still celebrating Godfather (had it's 50th year anniversary this year). It is for the same reason why we celebrate Nayagan even after almost four decades.

In an Interview kamalahassan candidly shared his thoughts during the making of Nayagan. He said that, half way through the Nayagan movie production, Muktha Srinivasan( the producer ) was not happy with the way Maniratnam was taking the movie. It seems that he wanted to opt out of the movie and that's when Auditor, movie financier and Maniratnam's elder brother G.Venkateshwaran (Sujatha Films Pvt Ltd) came into the picture for Production and then the rest is history.
The movie was taken to the next level with the BGM and the haunting music. It added the emotion to the movie than the story itself.
Sad too see how the music is not discussed in the success story.
If they played the scenes on this stage while muting the BGM they would nullify all these praising discussions. 😤

Fantastic interview. Can never forget the huge impact the movie made on me when it was released. I was around 20, brought up in erstwhile Bombay and I was completely blown away , more so with my favourite city being so aesthetically captured. KH was phenomenal, towering like a Colossus .
This interview provided lovely insights into the making of the movie.
I can't help wondering if Varadaraja Mudaliar saw the movie after it was made and what must his reaction have been.
I am from Bombay. I lived in the same area where Vardhabhai lived. I have also seen him on Vinayak chaturti celebrations in Matunga. The same is captured in Nayakan very well. FYI, most of the movie was shot in Madras with only some outdoor spots shot in Bombay. it is certainly a landmark movie. Tamil movie history can be divided as BN and AN... Before Nayakan and After Nayakan. Yes Vardhabhai moved to Madras around that time and did see the movie. He acknowledged it as being inspired by some events in his life.

Many years back, had the privilege of reading an interview by Maniratnam in a tabloid. In that the reporter asked Maniratnam whether that Don character had a contrast character sketched on the lines of Late Kamaraj ( very nicely observed by that reporter,.. ).
Maniratnam said yes,.he had a Don character written for Pagal Nilavu, but had a wild imagination of taking Late.Kamaraj's looks for that character but does negative works in the background for the society. He said something like he was imagining what if a person had Kamaraj LIKE looks but actually does contradictory works with a Don image.
Iam sure why Maniratnam did not disclose this in this session because it will result in politics (since he said about Late.Kamaraj) resulting in unnecessary issues for his PS One which is bound for release shortly.😁
