£20bn Black Hole: Who do you believe? Feat. Marina Purkiss & Salma Shah | Jeremy Vine

- Опубликовано: 7 сен 2024
- Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to announce immediate government cuts in an attempt to plug a £20bn black hole in the finances - which she claims was covered up by the previous government.
It's thought that she will take immediate action to pause projects like the tunnel under Stonehenge and Boris Johnson's 40 new hospitals programme.
But the former Chanceller, conservative Jeremy Hunt, says the message was designed to 'con the British public' so that Labour can raise taxes.

I worked for my country, I am 83. I have to forgo my winter fuel allowance, but billions will be paid to give asylum seekers hotel places.
Blame that on the Tories who purposely allowed the numbers in hotels to build to create a narrative around asylum and refugees
Agree entirely as I am 89 and in same situation as you
amazing the attention all the right wing client media is giving too goverment spendings lol where were these questions the last 14 years
Fare right is funded by the provision on drugs,, black market money only trickle up and out of the country into off shore account, unownable but between 5/20 trillion
10 billion pay rise for public sector workers, 11.6 billion for the foreign aid budget, and free food and warm accommodation for the asylum seekers, and some not so well off pensioners can freeze.
And there's the "hole"
@ant292uk you mean the public sector workers who received no increase for 10 years!
And plenty for Ukraine, Israel, too.
If they freeze the pensioners off that's more houses for the boat people.
😂 plebs don't get it, Tory tw@ts and Conartists got us where we are, remember 14 years, end of 😊.
I would imagine that disabled/poorly people will sadly the cuts again. It is always the poor people or disabled that sadly gets affected by these cuts or tax rises
Yeah garenteed now come October 30th she's said more pain to come to welfare, spending and others so labour continuing with the last government pip consultation proves she wants to do what the Tories wanted and take our money away from pip and make it only vouchers or catalogue system and 12bn in cuts to welfare itself
I blame the Tory’s for fourteen years of incompetence and dishonesty 🤬
Migrants in hotels.over UK pensioners
Tory nonsense. As if this will live live up to the amount of money the tories did covid-ppe to their friends…
@@carehow138 You want to put Pensioners in hotels? What for?
@@carehow138 because the conservatives made it illegal to possess them Deliberately !!!!!
As a pension rename me as an immigrant and put me up in a hotel save money on pension as it doesn’t matter how much money is spent on immigrants
Lies lies lies
That Labour all over
Poor Marina. She struggles to understand basic mathematics at the best of times, so she has absolutely NO chance in understanding how Govt finances work.
Poor plebs don't understand much about anything, hence brexit etc,etc 😊
That Salma really needs to show her sponsors on her lapel if she's going to be coming on here spouting this nonsense.
How funny you should say that because my opinion she was the only one that talked sense she knew all the right information that what happened and cant be deny.Labour knew everything about the economy and to stop WINTER PAYMENTS for pensioners with the excuse she didn’t know makes her a liar and then to give doctors a22% pay rise says it all .we are in for a disastrous 5 yrs.
please dont tax the rich..they dont have money!!!!!
Why always tax inspiration too much.
@@tenniskinsella7768you don’t have to be inspired to be rich, but you do need your old school chums😂😂
Lmao
Please vote for cuts for pensioners!
What? Are you mocking those who have worked extremely hard for wealth… wake up at 4am go to bed at 1am.
At least those you’ve highlighted as knowing their mates have got of their asses and used their brain. Beats wanting to sit and do nothing all day
THEY KNEW EXACTLY THE STATE OF THIS COUNTRY BEFORE WE WERE LUMBERED WITH THEM!! IT WAS NOT A SECRET !! A GOOD EXCUSE ! TO PUT UP TAXES !
😂😂 caps lock much?
Marina Purkiss is making perfect sense, while she is just getting dismissed.
The troff and cons supporters already know this, they just want to keep hiding their money that's all
They can easily find an £11k rise for Doctors pay.
The cost of not paying doctors a fair wage would be far greater - they would leave the NHS and work elsewhere. They have been doing that for the last 2 or 3 years.
@@nickwhite1513 bye bye. Consumed by gread.
Hunt cited the IFS and the OBR in his defence of his incompetence/mendacity (delete as appropriate). Both of those bodies are now saying Reeves was right, and right to be angry (which showed at times in her statement).
IFS and OBR both found the £22m blackhole prior to the election. IFS stated that Labour and Tories policies were inadequate to cover the blackhole.
She's a good actor, isn't she.
@@anncothromoir1018 She had every right to be and act outraged. The total additional amount of unfunded spending was/is £35billion, that has been downgraded by taking away the equivalent of a contingency and a couple of accounting corrections. So, on top of the £20 billion that we (and Labour) knew about, there is another £22 billion. The IFS and the OBR may not agree on every penny, but both agree that significant amounts were hidden. The OBR has called for an inquiry.
I certainly don't believe Reeves we all knew that she would come up with that excuse well old starmer is a liar so is she.
IFS Director Paul Johnson said:
“Rachel Reeves is within her rights to feel somewhat aggrieved. It was always clear and obvious that the spending plans she inherited were incompatible with Labour’s ambitions for public services, and that more cash would be required eventually. But the extent of the in-year funding pressures does genuinely appear to be greater than could be discerned from the outside, which only adds to the scale of the problem.
Nonetheless, some of the specifics are indeed shocking, and raise some difficult questions for the last government. If the scale of these overspends and spending pressures was apparent in the spring - and in lots of cases, there’s no reason to suppose otherwise - then it is hard to understand why they weren’t made clear or dealt with in the Spring Budget. Jeremy Hunt’s £10 billion cut to national insurance looks ever less defensible. On asylum costs, the decision to effectively stop processing claimants, and to budget virtually nothing for the resultant costs of housing them, looks like very poor policy making. The new Chancellor is right to be cross.
😂 just had 14yrs of verbal diarrhoea 😅
The IFS metioned this black hole in March, they are all lying. It is not a surprise.

In my city, there was this 130m project that was on hold since 2021.It was given a green light days after the announcement of the election! I wonder how many more projects like this got approved just around a similar timeline.
As Hunt said, it can be checked? So we can see who the liar is?
The woman of immigrant parents saying the pensioners only have a benefit started paying for the benefit over 50 years ago how dare she
The result of Sunaks scorched earth policy. If it’s unfixable still after 5 years Tories have lost that many MP’s that they’ll be able to offer a "whole new party”. Agree with the guy about the asset seizures etc on Covid loans etc, so far we’ve acted like one of the third world countries we so often call corrupt.
If we can't tax the mega wealthy 1% because they'll essentially not pay it through avoidance, maybe the working class should do the same thing?
Look at the people are coming into this country stop supporting them look at a People that are on the dole Never done a days work look at them I think you to save money there
They bloody knew😒
Is this a Tory funded channel ?
Well its hosted bt rgw clown that wanted to bring back boris bunter... Does that answer your question?
I'd say so 😂
What if it is?
Jeremy hunt saved 100,000 on stamp duty buying multiple flats from tory donor trust him do you.
Get the IMF investigators in - we need an audit by outsider professionals
Labour were already aware prior to the election; OBR, IFS, Owen Jones and Ash Sarkar all knew of the £22million blackhole prior to the election - IFS found Labours and Tories policies inadequate to cover the blackhole. There was omerta of silence from the media and Labour, Tories about this.
The issue is ANOTHER £35 billion (which when you make some accounting corrections is reduced to £22 billion) ON TOP of the £20 billion that was known about. The OBR have called for an inquiry. Tory ministers hid the truth from their own civil servants, from parliament, from the OBR and from the voters. The IFS may put the figure a bit lower, but agree that significant amounts of spend were concealed.
The OBR have already said they weren't aware. Where are you getting your information from?
@@MrDannyWright the OBR said their was in their own words ....a conspiracy of silence on the deficit. Says it all .
@@nickwhite1513grow up Nick FFS
@@nickwhite1513 Yes there was additional £13 billion but the rest was known - Labour are lying
Shes a lair
What, a place where wolves live!
Tories and cons like throwing stones in glass houses, talking about lying, f me 😂. I said since brexit we live in dumb f@ck land, point proven.
Why is whiney Viney even asking this question?
Reeves couldn't run a Starbucks never mind our economy. This black hole thing is nonsense. Reduce interest rates to 3%. We don't need high interest rates now. Ease the restrictions on quantitative easing. The debt payments of the government is reduced. We spend more. Problem solved. Get borrowing, get building. Equalise capital gains with income tax and issue a wealth tax. Sorted.
Compare us after 14yrs NOT 5 WEEKS.
Labour won't be in that long?
Some poor souls don’t have that long little bro.
You'll be lucky if you get single term
We can't put the Toffs in Prison for their crimes that just isn't Cricket xD
The question should be where in the hell did all the money go?
What. A. Surprise. NOT
Marina is light in this Tory darkness, god bless here,
OBR New so why didnt she ? Typical lying politicians
The OBR are saying they were misled. They are calling for an inquiry into the Tory mess. Back in January they were describing some Tory figures as "fiction".
Yes you are right, OBR knew before the election, IFS, Owen Jones and Ash Sarkar etc
@@nickwhite1513 Rubbish . They said 20 billion weeks before the election.
She *did* know. And has known for months, if not longer.
Actually, the OBR have written a letter calling for an inquiry, because they did not know about the £35 billion (which has been adjusted down for accounting reasons to £22 billion). That's in addition to the £20 billion that was known about. IFS put the figure a bit lower, but agree that there was deception by the Tories about the true state of the country's finances.
Big misconception behind an annual wealth tax. People don't hold cash, they have value in their assets!
What about young people getting a home as way with this country cannot help any young people
I am of an age when the labour party would have had no qualms in fact it was policy when they got into power to try and level up the rich paying abit more in tax to take the burden of hard pressed working people not now what is the difference between labour and the tories
The woman guests who wants wealthy people to pay more tax, does this include the multi millionaire Labour MP's including Saint IKEA Starmer who is reportedly worth around £7 million?.
Why are we having a discussion about "who you believe" ........... report the facts as known ......... but hey that would not suit your programme agenda. We have to get out of this polarised pattern from the media
LIARS LIARS LIARS
There have been plenty of warnings that the economic forecasts were far too optimistic
The words she used were for the simpletons to understand. Something like Brexit promises before the event.
Black market money only trickle up and out of the country into off shore account,, unknowable but between 4/20 trillion
Not her. Need independent review. Not her
I dont believe any politician
People should be held accountable for there action including the spedding of public money, where has all those billions and i mean billions is not a couple of quid gone we need accountability for politicians
Labour lies
She keeps smiling hopes she s pleased with herself not normal
"total surprise" - it was NOT a "total surprise"
Rather than the wealth being taxed, I think what should be taxed is the income generated from that wealth - e.g. Rental incomes, capital gains, dividends and so on. I don't think it makes sense to tax wealth because it will only be a one off, whereas taxing incomes from the wealth is passive income for the treasury. Ideally the income from the wealth should be taxed exactly at the same rate as income tax.
Scrap the barnet formula and save billions.
Of course, she knows. Typical left wing tactics
Tories totally screwed up the economy..
And what are right wing tactics.
She is as rightwing as jeremy hunt
Hunt cited the IFS and the OBR in his defence of his incompetence/lying (delete as appropriate). Both of those bodies are now saying Reeves was right, and that she was right to be angry (which showed at times in her statement).
OBR, IFS, Owen Jones and Ash Sarkar they all knew - this is all open book. The Labour and Tories knew - there was a omerta of silence from both including the media. Why did you think Rishi was so confident in claiming that Labour was going to raise taxes? Labour vehemently denying despite being challenge by the likes of Ash Sarkar and IFS
Not labour
You knew labour would do this ..to raise taxes..hate the tories, but labour have to put up taxes
The crucial issue seems to be that's it's within this year shortfall not over the whole planning period.
Tax and Spend !
10:44 Nope it just shows how much it has been invested in the economy - nothing wrong with UK debt again it's not household debt which is different
Probably better to overstate the issue than understate and winter fuel payment is discretionary and the housing of migrants is an entitlement wether we agree or not personally I think hotels are over generous when you compare what happens to military staff being temporarily housed on deployments which can be anything from sharing tents to portakabins to hotels b&b or barracks where multiple persons share a room designed for one. Needs a good think about they were squatting in tents at Calais waiting to come to the promised land. There's arguments on both sides to this and I suspect the government are putting off some uncomfortable truths and decisions we don't want to be seen to exploit migrants but we appear to be a soft touch.
B am inclined to believe Rachel Reeves as opposed to the cons who were in power for far far too long..... Jane Soole, 80 years.
22 billion.
I thought that meant we're quids in , as red is associated with debt. But my 4year old put me right .
Retires need over 2 million in wealth in savings to cover a long retirement! There are not enough wealthy people anymore in the uk!

Can someone tell me why us pensioners are going to pay for the shortfall and as much as i like Marina i think she should be speaking up for us.
Tory boy Jeremy showing his bias
land should be taxed
9:42 Jeremy you are unqualified and out of your depth; UK debt is not household debt - 2.7 million just show how much money has been invested into the economy. UK can "borrow" more, the actual limit is the productive capacity of the economy
EZRI from Vale of Glamorgan ...Spot on ..i agree 100% with what you said ..
