Tim's Chaotic Magnets!

- As a fan of the book 'Chaos' by James Gleick, which was my introduction to chaos theory, Tim's chaotic magnet toys are an endless source of fun and amazement...
Three magnets, each at the end of a springy wire. The magnets repel each other, and so if you make one of the magnets move to and fro, the other magnets will also move in a strangely chaotic way!
A magnet suspended on a fine thread moves in unexpected ways as it swings above four magnets, which are attached to the base.
The next toy is called 'Flirtation' and it was made by Loncraine Broxton. Two swivelling magnets interact in fascinating ways.
The next example has a magnet hanging at the end of a fine thread. However this one seems to keep going. It turns out there is a small battery powered motor in the base, a so called 'kicker' motor, which every so often gives a swinging magnet a little 'kick' which keeps it going.
At 05.25, we have quite an unusual construction - a Perspex channel has a slight dip in the middle. Place the metal rotor at one end, and it will roll down the slope, and then roll up the other side. You would expect it to slow down fairly quickly, but again this toy has a kicker motor, which keeps the little rotor moving!
Finally an elaborate toy that has two suspended pieces, again with a kicker motion in the base. The resulting chaotic motion is very hypnotic, and as it will runs for quite a few weeks one one battery, one use might be to place it in your shop window, to intrigue and amaze passers by!
It never ceases to amaze me just how many weird random things he can show me and maintain my interest
I can see why Tim likes them, there's something so mesmerizing about the magnets. There's some instinctive desire to apply a sense of agency to all the things in those toys, even though you *know* it's just magnets and batteries.
Some might say they have a magnetic air
Batteries? Batteries!? We don't need no stinkin' batteries!
That last one is so mesmerizing, it looks like something Mesmer himself would've used.

I've always thought of it more like the Universe has agency, and the magnets are just strange objects obeying the wacky rules.
Tims Sound Is So Soft And Smoothing Love It!!!!!
Soothing
@@krishnaj.6846 smoooothing
Reminds me of Bob Ross. Soothing voice but shows you something cool in the process.
Tim is back in the shadow realm.
idk why but this genuinly made me laugh so hard
He's so powerful he can just leave and enter whenever he wishes.
LMAO
@@warmham3490 Me too.
My knees are weak
I'm happy to see Tim unaffected by the chaos in the world and still kicking! Love you Tim!
What are you talking about? The world is fairly peaceful right now. Politics and shit have always been going on - why would it affect this?
@@MrSHURIKENCHO there's literally a war
@@CometAura lol just because this is the first war you ever got fed by the media doesnt mean it's special. There have been like 10 wars in the passed 20 years...
@@MrSHURIKENCHO doesn't make it any less real either
Calming to watch. Tim should get knighted.
@@Waseemmmm this entire exchange baffles me. Why can’t they comment positively about Tim? Why do they want to know whether you’re Algerian? I feel so confused.
Sir Tim
I agree
@Fremen free publication, better reception at public places
Sir Tim
This grand man needs to have a museum with all his collected goodies called Grand Illusions by Tim.. I'd pay an arm and a leg to go there 🥰😭💖
I love that most of the toys are still swinging around at the end of the video :)
That tall vertical one would be even better if it was two flowers with a bee darting around back and forth between them
Now THERE's a GOOD IDEA!!! I like the way you think... It could be for kids, maybe.... To help promote the importance of bees? 🤔👍 😎🇬🇧
I'm quite sure Tim has a toy with a similar concept like that but way smaller.
Start making them. Too easy. You won't sell millions but you might make some money and give joy to people.
Thats actually a good idea
Pure relaxation. Everyone needs a Tim in their lives.
Tim, please never change. You are an amazing human.
I've got one of those pendulums with the magnets embedded in the base. It's got answers printed on it so you can use it as a magic 8-ball.
Dennis: Okay Charlie, what’s your favorite hobby?
Charlie: magnets
Ooh, I used to have that last one as a child. I loved my "executive toys" collection.
I said it before. This channel is a real inspiration for any design engineer
These videos are expertly crafted and true gems. They should be archived beyond just being on youtube/the internet. Let's carve this guy into stone.
Some time ago i was asked if i could meet any celebrity or someone, who would it be. I had no idea, i'm not much into meeting people. But now in pops Tim into my youtube recommendations and yes. I'd like to meet him. Such a pleasant personality, and someone to easily have something to talk with.
Beautiful. Magnets are magical.
Tim feels like the David Attenborough of random stuff
I love how Tim is able to insert a little physics knowledge about potential and kinetic energy into this episode.
Magnets are a delight.
thank you sir, very much enjoyed. my favorite is the first one and the last two, and the 2nd and 3rd ones, those are my favorites. thank you...
whoever had the idea to film and upload these, you're a genius. also, i would love to see his whole collection at once.
There is a video somewhere of someone talking to him in his house about all his toys. A world record or news video or something, but I can't remember where I saw it
right. tim was just playing with his toys for no reason before
Who disliked this wholesome goodness?
People that don't understand magnets? (Or people that are repelled by the subject? ;-) )
Now nobody can dislike any video :/
The insane clown posse
Thank you for showing us those Tim. Terrific !
I think this might be one of the coolest things I've ever seen
Soon be time for a new theme tune.
I like the original, and the one from 2019.
Very awesome video
🙂❤️🧡💛💚💙
That three-rotor one on the sloped ramps probably has a Bedini circuit driving the electromagnet. I love that toy, going to look for one!
Thanks!
Professional Silly Goose is such a dream job.
the first toy is a really interesting demonstration of the three body problem
I have never heard English sputtered forth quite as elegantly as this.

Thank you, Tim!
I am from the Czech Republic and I love your show. You are amazing and I am always looking forward to more videos. Good luck. ♥
The 1st one is really cool, could cover the magnets with the shape of flies or butterflies
My co-worker has that pinwheel one. I shouldn't be surprised that Tim has one too!
OMG....I loved Chaos by James Gleick
Really enjoyed watching your videos!
Just when I thought my day couldn't get any better!
I'm coming back what better way to get sleep 😴 there nothing more relaxing than a old man's voice 💙💤
Tim really has a magnetic personality
Tim will love a Tensegrity table. I hope he gets one. Editor please tell this comment to Tim. He should get a small Tensegrity structure. He will love it!! 😊😊😊
I'm sure he already has one...
tensegrity tables are so overdone now though
We’ve had a copy of the last one for more than 25 years. Guests find it fascinating. The batteries last for ages.
The way you said they are like eyes, then at the end as the camera pulls away from close up, the magnets are perfectly placed and cover your eyes as they zip around
Great fun to watch. It made me wonder if there are planets in multiple star systems behaving in similar chaotic orbits. Thank you for sharing.
That's me inspired! I have a nice big magnet collection too. I have some huge magnets too so I'll see about involving those I think....
I want these for my desk but I feel if I did I would just watch them move all day.
as a person who could literally pick up any random object and play with it, if i had tim's toys i would literally fidget with them for hours
"All trying to get away from each other" -- it's like three exes who run into each other at a cocktail party!
Beautiful - thank you.
What a lovely idea.
The hanging one with the hidden battery could have been made simpler by having the magnet pass over a coil to generate electricity.
An excellent diagnosis tool for depression. The more you're depressed, the longer you watch. I watched it twice.
Such elegant toys, wouldn't mind to get one of those for my office
Video quality looks particularly good for this episode.
I'm so happy you're back in the studio
Can we get a pendulum that never stops due to magnetism? Like some strange perpetual motion
Magnets are wonderful, magnetism mysterious and Tim's blood is worth bottling.
I remember the 'space wheel' running back and forth in the track when they first came out.
So I expect to see a full two-week video of that last one popping up in my feed any day now
Fantastic! That took me back a few years
I watch Tim on the toilet first thing in the morning 🤣
Thank you for that most interesting and relevant piece of information. Oh, wait… 🤔
Neutrino oscillation was really well demonstrated around eight minutes in.
I'm surprised you don't have a magnetiser/demagnetiser to show off.
Great channel. Love seeing all the gadgets and gizmos.
If you had six magnets on the second one all the 'wrong' way up, I wonder how good a die it would make.
Wow these are gorgeous.
These toys have such chaotic energy
I love this man with a passion usually reserved for my cat
great fun,MINT""! cheers,
Even chaotic motion, to a point, can be predicted if you know the exact starting conditions, it's knowing that which is hard!
Next show; Tim's Perpetual Magic Machine
This is sooo wholesome
So glad to see you back!
Glad to see you going strong Tim!

Wow that's amazing
This man is a national treasure.
Mesmerizing. Great Video.
It's like you have cotton and sunflower seeds in your mouth at the same time.
I love this man 😍
Tim, you are awesome. I very much enjoyed this video and I love your style.
if I may, where can i get these wonderfull display of engineering? It will bring amazement my kids, and fueled their interest in science. Thanks Tim
Tim you look grand!
-Player Tim has initiated a new Chaotic Era.
Any idea where I might find any of these toys, the third one in particular? I have only been able to find cheap plastic knock-offs of the pendulum and I think they would make a lovely gift for my friend
I made something like the ball on the stick one as a kid and put some xylophone keys around the ball. I called it the Chaos Charms. (was a pencil with a strong magnet on the bottom on a string tied above the repelling magnet below it.)
I do like them, Tim!
Great channel thanks, quick question on the 2nd & 3rd magnetic device you mentioned that due to air resistance it would eventually slow down and stop 🤔if this is true? What if put the device in a vacuum chamber, according to your answer of its cause of slowing down it should now keep running, correct?
I love the last and second to last the most ^^
Magnets make great toys.
Can we pop the first 3 into a vacuum, removing air resistance would be interesting to observe.
Friction on the joints would still exist so it still wouldnt be perpetual motion, but id imagine it would preform better
I think that objects lose some kinetic energy by interacting with the magnetic field somehow, regardless of friction or air
eh, probably. i passed my grade 12 physics class on a technicality so im not great with this stuff lol
Love a good magnet.
Magnetism is the best force in this world. Well, at least most entertaining.
What a wonderful video !
