I am 75 next month, and I have owned a Total Gym since 1975, from it's inception. This one piece of equipment has kept me functional and active. I am not able to do some of the workouts I used to do, because of age and joints but it has literally been a lifesaver! I Love Your Videos. Onward and Upward, Anne
Hi sliding bench trainer, I have commented on your other posts but I feel I need to put my 10 penny worth here, as I said in my reply last time I had a total gym for a number of years and stupidly sold it when times got hard😢but I have recently purchased another one second hand. I am a massive fan of Chuck Norris and he was my inspiration to get one in the first place as he used and promoted these for many years so just look at the shape he was in during his career as 6 times world karate champion, people only believe what they want to believe most of the time but they can’t argue with the facts, Chuck and yourself are in great shape and yes you probably supplement your training with other types of resistance training but you can definitely build a great and strong physique with the total gym alone. Take no notice of people who shout this or you down because if you motivate anyone to do something that will give them fitness and heath then that is fantastic and as far as I can see from these comments you are truly respected by many people for your advice 👍👍👍👍
You can heal your joints, it's possible. I'm doing it currently for a spinal injury. I'm doing what all the MDs told me was not possible. But a couple DCs told me it's possible, one by adjustments and the other by meditation. So first I did the chiropractic adjustments and got some results, then i stopped improving then have been doing a chakra meditation for the last year, and I've actually improved more than from just the adjustments alone. But that's because I finally realized that healing can't take place under too much chronic stress, and since I was dealing with PTSD from Iraq deployment, I realized that I need to work more on relaxing and prayer to get any better. Many people never learn this, you first need to believe it's possible that way you will do whatever it takes. And I've done everything from PRP, steroidal anti inflammatory injections, physical therapy, exercise, stretching, massage, diet and supplements , prescriptions, week long water fasts, chiropractic and yoga. The best part of meditation for healing is that it brings other benefits and it doesn't cost anything. But I did buy the chakra meditation from Dr Joe Dispenzas site. Good luck brother, if I can do it you can too. Oh and I've had these injuries for the last 15 years, and 4 years ago it was so bad I was super suicidal and it destroyed my life, losing my wife it the process. But I started the meditation last year and the amount I've improved has been wonderful. Again I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel
I have had a total gym for 6 years and i don't use it as much as I could but i love it being there when i want it. It dose keep me in shape. I'm 71 and people think I'm 55+. Thank you Chuck Norris 😎
I sustained a severe spinal back in 1999. I purchased a Total Gym after a year of extreme physical therapy. The results I achieve with a Total Gym gave me my mobility back.
That's great! I have had tweaky back issues since I was 21. Fortunately they were very intermittent and not debilitating. But as I've gotten older, soreness in my back has increased. The more I use my Total Gym, and especially the core exercises, the better my back feels. Too few people understand how important core strength is to back health.
@@Nicksonianfor that twing in the lower back. It's really beneficial to strengthen your hips by putting your shoulders against the wall hands on your hips and roll your hips forward and backwards. The longer you can do it the better. Speed it up or slow it down. Just make sure during the roll forward clinch your cheeks. Doing a version of this that involves a female, really helped my lower sciatic back pain.
I messed up my shoulder bad wrestling in high school so I can’t do a typical resistance training( like bench press) so I use the total gym. I started two months ago and I can tell a huge difference. I’m only 27 and I will use a total gym probably the rest of my life
Sorry to hear about your injury but great to hear that you’re seeing results from the TG. I got my first sliding bench trainer when I was around your age. Problem was back then I didn’t have as much faith in it as I do now.
Thats how Chuck Norris got hooked on the Total Gym he hurt his Rotator Cuff Physical Therapy did not work he said the Total Gym helped heal his Rotator Cuff.
u might look in to do some innies en outies workout for ur shoulder (low weights) if the ligaments aren't totally teared otherwise u should look in to prolotherapy , it realy works. wish u best of luck
Same here. I had never been successful with sticking to memberships or other home exercise equipment. Got the xls and I lost 25kg with my ex losing nearly 50kg. We also rode our bikes and tried to count calories as well, but the fact that this was so easy and comfortable to use helped me stick with it. And I very quickly felt the difference as my strength grew enormously. I sadly lost my gym but have been looking for one at a good price second hand. I got one for cheap but it was the 1000 model and the pulley constantly catches my hair and makes it scary to use. What a fun and effective piece of equipment!!
I started working on my total gym 6 months ago and with proper diet have lost 35 pounds using only the total gym and walking. I have definition again in my arms back and chest and I am 53 years old. It is an incredible machine.
Used a low end total gym in my 40s. Dropped ~60 lbs in about 8 months, working out 30 mins a day and cutting out junk food. Now in my late 50s and gonna do it again. Saves a lot of time instead of a gym membership.
Biggest maintenance expenditure was replacing the cables. Didn't buy them from total gym, had them locally made at a wire n fasteners shop... cost something like $20 a piece...cheap.
I've had my total gym for 22 years now. I purchased it along with all the attachments it came with at the time. As long as you have a total gym that can support weight plates you cant go wrong. I still go from one exercise to another, so it works my cardio which is a plus. I can do a full body in 20 minutes and that is 3 sets.
@@kevinpoynter6697 I have the total gym 11000 and ive never replaced any parts. I have cleaned the glideboard rollers, cable pulleys, and frame to make sure everything stays smooth
I've been using a totalgym for a few years, it does everything I need it to do. Honestly, there is something appealing about laying down on a board to exercise, when not feeling motivated, and all of a sudden I find myself "Going to town" moments after I start. If that doesn't make sense and motivate you to buy one then you're just not serious enough to start exercising on the regular.
Definitely not a scam. Twice in the past 15 years I have completely transformed my body using ONLY a Total Gym, diet, and walking. I have a gym near me, but even when I have had a membership, I have found that I'm more likely to stick to a workout routine using the Total Gym because it's right there in my garage, taking up very little space, and I can make it part of my morning routine without having to get dressed and get in the car to go anywhere.
Yes definitely not a scam. Only someone who has never used a total gym would even say something like that. Where the total gym absolutely destroys lifting heavy weights is when you're tired and or not totally motivated to work out. BUT what happens is you start working out on total gym easy, it feels good so you work harder and end up with heavy resistance. I can totally exhaust just about any muscle just as good and deep as with free weights, only it is more "fun", or more "comfortable"...it's hard to explain.
I have had 9 back and spine related surgeries. I am fused from T1-L2. Suffer from chronic pain due to nerve damage. The Total Gym has not only helped with my recovery but I have lost 190 pounds and transformed my body. Mentally and physically. The TG takes the stress off my back and allows me to work hard. I’m amazed at what I have been able to accomplish. I appreciate demos from you and others. I hit the TG and recumbent bike early morning before my pain gets worse. Take it from me. The TG can start as a therapy aid, but become life changing.
Are you kidding me ? I have artritis, bursitis, tendonatis herniated disc head to toe , therefor I stop lifting , so you tellibg me with this machines I can lift again with out getting more hurt ? Pls tell me that is what you mean and wich machine beand and model u recomend pls
@@lissyquezada2668 sorry for the delay. I just saw this. I use the Total Gym Fit. I started in the pool where I could get away with a lot of training without much aggravation. I was introduced to the TG at PT in the late 90’s. It was amazing. It basically took my back out of the equation. At first I used very little resistance and could only do exercises where I laid flat on my back. Over time I was able to progress to seated movements. Start slow. Check with your doctor first. Just because it worked for me doesn’t mean it will work as well for you. Best of luck. I hope it helps
I picked up my Weider UBW during covid lockdown since I was so tired of having to work around a bench, barbells, and dumbbells in my small house with three other people (my family lol). The sliding bench was cheap, durable, and I could fold it all up out of the way if I gave up on fitness (again). Your channel helped justify and expand my use of it, and also look at bands, suspension trainers, etc. and gave me something I could use to put together solid muscle building workouts with a small footprint - I'm a believer, but this vid is great.
Although I don't fit into your target audience for this video, (53 yr wanna be fit), I love my total gym. It definitely works for me. Thankyou so much for all your videos! Your my go to person for learning all the exercises I can do on this machine. Your information is priceless...
If you’re somewhat interested in these machines, then you’re my target audience. Thank you so much for the kind words and I’m very happy you find the content helpful.
I have used the XLS model for years. When the gyms closed down due to COVID. I added a center support to my TG. I have loaded the TG with a total 750lbs of weights. Standard plates "600lbs" plus my weight "145lbs" @ #6 setting = 316lbs of true pressing weight for leg press exercises.
Two thoughts here, Either these people have never tried it or they're behind another product. As far as just doing pushups, dips and chin ups your average person cannot do enough of most if not all of these exercises to even begin progress. With only a chin up bar and a few other other home workout pieces of equipment try doing seated rows and or cable flyes. How about shoulder presses that don't hurt your back. I could go on but we know the truth and that''s all that matters.
It’s basically a very scalable cable machine, and then some- the single most important thing about this device (yes it’s a very versatile, scalable tool that allows you do many, many exercises) is that it allows you to perform less-than-bodyweight squats and pull-ups (and dips, and probably other bodyweight moves like handstand pushups, iron cross (?), etc). I’d recommend getting up on your toes and doing full range true hack squats on it instead of those partial squats ( on that note I know you use that vertical leg press for more half-squats; why, I don’t know.)
This is an intellegently-crafted video, thank you! I saw a commercial for this machine on TV and decided to look into it to see if it is indeed just for rehabilitation or an older generation. We are in our 40s and I have been doing power yoga for almost 25 years now. The weight resistance of my own body is all I've ever needed to be challenged and build muscle, which is why I love the simplicity of yoga, all I need is a mat. I was drawn to this machine for the same reason as I'm looking for something for my husband that does the same thing, uses his own body weight for resistance. Your demonstrations have really helped sell me on it. I really appreciate your innovative thinking about this machine and your articulate, well-thought-out video. Bravo and thank you!
Coming across your video for older people made me buy a Total Gym, even though I'm not elderly! I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hypermobility) and have a lot of back problems which aren't fixable. Any kind of strength training killed my back and just wasn't do-able. But as I'm now in my 50s and have gone through menopause I noticed my muscles were scarily weak and I knew I had to do something about the situation. I do all the arm exercises sitting on the bench with my legs crossed, which takes the weight off my lower back. Being able to do legs squats while lying on my back, which doesn't require my back to weight bare, has been a game changer. I started out with the column on the lowest height at no.1 which has allowed me to very gradually over several months increase resistance at my own pace. I can also do the exercises slowly and mindfully, not over-extending my joints which as someone who is hypermobile I do naturally and can cause injury/tendonitis. I can't do all the exercises because of my back issues, so just concentrate on the ones I can do. Brilliant piece of equipment - thanks for the videos 🙂
Holy crap. I’ve had this machine for 15 years and never knew I could look that ripped with it. Well, ive dusted the old beauty off and away we go. I have runners knee and want to try something different to build strength. Very excited to find this channel!
I actually love your videos because it gives everyone work out ideas. Plus people need to know these sliding bench trainers can replace a gym. I’ve been using my Weider Ultimate Body Works for about two months now. And my arms actually look bigger to me than when I was going to the gym. Not to mention it’s a lot more gentle on your joints and is a more fun workout.
I have a Weider too. I first saw Pilates Exercise studios in NYC with them. As the years passed I decided to get one. They do everything that you can do in a gym. You can workout the entire body with it.
Accidentally logged in under wife’s account, but I felt compelled to comment. I am an average size man who has gone through bursts of extreme athleticism. I started back with P90X and freeweights. I was able to get to 8% body fat and look ripped with it…almost as good as you are now, but only being 5 9 inches tall and 200lbs. Well, long story short…I am prone to bursitis. So, my heavy weightlifting was interrupted at least once a year by injury. Therefore, I never was able to keep consistency for more than 6 or 7 months. I scoffed at the Total Gym too. Well, I have one sitting right here, and I swear by it now. Resistance is resistance no matter how it is achieved. The body doesn’t know the difference at all. That being said, the vast majority of scoffers would never even use the weight with freeweights that is comparable to the highest incline. So, a 160 man at the highest incline would be doing 40 lbs of resistance on each side. Most fo,ks don’t even lift that heavy anyway. As for bodybuilding, just add the extra weight via vests or the bar. It’s really simple. It’s just that folks lack knowledge, consistency, and common sense. Most people also lift too heavily for their connective tissues anyway. That was the cause of my bursitis….lifting 60lbs in each hand before my musculature and connective tissue was actually ready. I.e. overtraining. Just because you can lift something with muscles doesn’t mean your joints are ready yet.
Really appreciate you sharing your history. I respect the honest reflection, especially at the end where you mention "just because you can lift something, doesn't mean you can." That's a very simple but powerful statement.
Most of the "no nothings" complaining have only seen the Total Gym on tv! When I started working in a rehab facility in early 1990's, they had 3 total gyms. MD's & PT's used these machines to help restore physicality for patients who had suffered from mvas, cvas, cardiac arrests, & general strengthening to restore adl. They are very good for some patients. I have had mine since the late '90's. Keep doing what you are doing!
I always loved reading arthur jones articles he made people cringe i thought he was awesome people need to think outside of the box. People should realize how long has total gym been in business you dont last this long wothout success. I wish i wouldve started using it way before i did maybe i wouldnt have as many aches and pains i do have. Good video Mike
You can't build muscle without free weights? WTH? Some of the most incredibly fit and muscled men I know do yoga, for goodness sake! I have my second total gym -- side of the road pick-up in perfect condition. So glad because it does help me stay fit.
From the day I bought my TG, your videos stood out. I happen to be one of those "old people", 64 now, and realized I need to get back in shape. I spent my adult life as a Police Officer, on a SWAT team for 23 years and I hated the gym although I was always very active and could do my job. Now I look forward to working out, lol after all these years. Something that no one talks about, but is a great feature of this gym, is that you work on it from the start with a perfect range of motion. In the gym, you suffer form for trying to lift heavier than you should, peer pressure, or trying to impress. On this machine, you build the small muscles first and injuries are rare. Your use of bands opened it up for me, I purchased them and use them regularly. Sometimes it's slippery and I don't get good traction when using resistance bands, but I use the bar to aide. I would love to see your ideas on how to sit when using the bands, so you don't slide off. Great videos, thank you for your insight.
Those are great points Victor that many might not consider. Thanks for the positive comments and your service to your community. I'm not sure I understand the "slippery" bands part. I know the glide board sometimes cannot have traction, but with the bands on I feel that I helps me not to slip.
Your videos r always great n I love my total gym..ive lost lots of weight n built noticeable muscle using it, I do go to the gym when I wanna lift heavier then what my total gym can hold n it holds up I was 460 when I invested in it..i was about 380 when I found your channel looking for new ways to use it..im 290 now and most of my workouts were done with and currently with my total gym ..agin ty for your all your content. Juss thought I'd share
Every time I watch your videos, I get motivated to put my trust in Total Gym again, even though the idea of traditional bodybuilding is so ingrained in my mind. Thanks so much!
@@hybridresistance Again, with so many fitness gurus or experts who are dominating in RUclips channels, it is very hard for average guys to have a paradigm shift, especially since they make the whole bodybuilding very complicated to the point that I wanted to give up. However, your approach is way more direct and straightforward, and your physique is the proof. Thanks
I think the total gym is a great piece of equipment. It’s really almost the perfect fitness device you can utilize. The variety of angles you can hit the muscles is superior to almost every other piece of gym equipment I’ve ever used. Obviously the big limitation is you’re using body weight, but that’s also good because you’re using a weight that probably won’t injure you too much.
GREAT video! The headline caught my attention. I love Love LOVE my total gym. I've had it [commercial version] since 1999-2000 and was the best 5k investment ever. I do the John Carleo work out every day. No breaks [days off] for me. I'm miserable if I don't work out and working out in a "regular gym" is not my cup-o-tea (it's a germ thing). I reside in a "tiny condo" and it's set-up in my dining area. I do have a foldable "screen" to hide it in a corner when entertaining. Everyone tells me to "get rid of it" and I say: "when I'm gone [or raptured out] you can do whatever you want with it!" I'm an old fart but the cops (when I ask them for a mo) think I'm in my mid to late 40's. I do admit, having good genes help (thank you mom and dad) :)
Another great video. Throughout history we have witness people being stuck in their narrow minded thinking. I feel if you are comfortable with free weights then have at it,however don't put my training down especially if I'm having success and enjoyment.
Total Gym definitely works. I've had two of them the Ultra, and now XLS. I'm in great shape and more importantly, my joints aren't damaged like with free weights. Its 2022 and I'm heading toward 50 yo and I feel great.
I bought my first total gym in 2002. It was a floor model so it didn't have all the pieces, but I got it cheap. I had a 25lb plate I sat on when I used it and it worked for me being in a small apartment. I ended up selling it and getting a better one. I then bought the 1700 club. I use free weights but I like the total gym for certain exercises like hack squats with a weighted bar. It is a very versatile machine. You can buy them used like new for very cheap.
Bought my total gym in 2014 and did not use it enough didn't really focus on any health goals. Almost two years ago the doctor told me I had heart attack level cholesterol. With a change in diet and utilizing my total gym 3 to 5 times a week I dropped 70lbs and my cholesterol is now within normal levels without medication. I also use an exercise mat for some core exercises and pushups. I have muscle definition I can see my abbs. I never had this level of fitness before. I finish my exercise fold the gym up and put it under my futon and pull it out the next day or the day after and am continuing my health journey.
Very good information. I’ve been thinking of purchasing a total gym and canceling my gym membership. I’m over the overcrowded gym scene and having to wait on equipment and having to load and unload hammer strength machines
I had worked out for years in a gym using free weights all the high-end equipment ect. I got older out of shape and hurt myself trying to use free weights again. The total gym saved me. it can replicate just about any exercise and more. I have lost 45 lbs and am getting pretty jacked at the same time. I love my total gym . my only regret is I did not get the very top end one because I will use this for life. But the TG fit is great. definitely not a scam. also, you can get great hit and cardio training. I love teh hit cardio boxing workout. it really does it all. The only exercise I miss is the dead lift. I don't see how to simulate a real deadlift on it.
The bands wor well for dead lift. Obviously, not the same, but you can add a lot of resistance. I purchased handles and use a plywood base, enough for an old f@#k like me
I was Honor Graduate from U.S. Army Airborne School at 41 yo, using Total Gym for my resistance training, Power Yoga for isometric strength and running for cardio. The total gym helped me scale up my pullups.
Love the videos very informative. Keep it up. I feel total gym in combination with some dumbbell and barbell exercises makes for a good variety and adds to the muscle confusion/growth and keeps workouts interesting and fun
I got a total gym and I like it. Feels different than calisthenics on the gymnastics rings and different than weights too. However I think the problem is that there's not a very good way to load the legs heavily.
Yeah, I'm a 280lb powerlifter who's got a 700 Deadlift and I'm natural. I use the Total Gym several times a week as a supplement to my lifting. My favorite bicep exercise of any modality is Total Gym curls. And big guys, meaning 250+ like myself, dismissing the Total Gym is just tone deaf. It's very useful for bigger human beings and the resistance load is more challenging when you're heavier. I got stronger during the pandemic without access to any gym and the Total Gym might've been the biggest catalyst.
Stopped going to the gym because everyone is more worried about taking photos of them selfs instead of leaving their phones in the locker room. I love working out in my garage and I don't have to wait to use a piece of equipment!
My butt there a scam I have coronary artery disease so I'm limited on what I can do, I went from 175 lb of skin and bone I was able to get back up to 220 on. A 6'3 frame
I’m a 40 yr old woman, never really could stick to any type of workout or machine. I got a total gym 3 months ago and OMG 😱. I LOVE my total gym. There is something just so easy about the glide board. I can easily move through exercises without much planning, thus, I always end up putting in a good workout, even when I don’t think I will. It’s just so easy to keep going...arms get tired, switched to legs...all on one machine. I have a lower back injury, so the board helps me a lot. I have seen beautiful results already, can’t wait for my one year anniversary to see how my body will change!! Finally found exercise I like!
Thanks for your videos! My Total Fitness machine replaced my squat machine and Roman chair and the free weights. I live in a condo with limited space so I am very happy with the extra space. Please keep going and ignore the trolls and ignorant comments. You are making a difference.
I am disablede and 67 years old and I my self love these movement with cable movements. I have trained over 52 years, hard core kid doing power movements combined with body bulding movements, super sets ect, ect. and yes I would the definately use this. What about the PALLADASE movements and machines over 20.000 grand ? may be in Beverly Hills.?
I bought total gym xli in 2004 (btw, I don't see any review on the xli on your channel). 20 years later, I still use it several times a week and it still works as good as the first day. And yes, it definitely works to build muscles. Of course if you go to a proper gym regularly, you might not need this machine because you have access to plenty of machines, each of them dedicated to one single muscle or one muscles group, but I have been using it for 20 years and I'm sore after each training session.
Used my total gym for my motocross and Enduro training. Racing is over with but still use the total gym. I have a bench , some dumbbells and peleton I incorporate in my quest to stay fit. Will always use my total gym. It got me where I'm at today.
I just discovered your Channel today I'm 52 between a construction job and the weight training I did in my 30s my joints took a beating but I'm now in better shape than I was 20 years ago the only thing I use is the Total Gym plus a few supplements like push-ups. You really have given me some great ideas on how to add resistance and ideas for more exercises. Thank you so much for posting these videos
Sliding bench training is a great way to work out . These videos are awesome and are far more informative than the brochure that comes with it. I believe anyone that wants to feel great and get in shape should use one . Keep up the good work big guy! I love mine
Just got my SECOND total gym today. Brought my first one many years ago & WORE IT OUT! It got me in great shape & was running 36 miles a week too. Got past multiple tradigies plus now cancer free 93 days... sooooo here we go!! So excited! If it didn't work before, I wouldn't buy a second one!!
I got into working out again since my 20s little more than a month ago via VR honestly. I got sober a few years ago im 35 i have hella kids and a crazy job going to the gym with meatheads in my spare time is not my thing. I'm not trying to be brock lesnar but im not overweight just not in great shape and want some self improvement. Ppl laugh at the vr but i have been consistent 4-6 times a week changing some diet things and i have deff noticed a difference. A friend of ours gave us their total gym xls they dont use anymore and i love it. I get it has some limitations but man there is a ton to do. Thanks for your videos they're a big help as my knowledge is pretty limited.
I suggest that you put the title in quotation marks because it looks like you are saying it's a scam. Some people will just skip past the video for this reason.
Thanks! I first encountered Total Gym in 1998 or 1999 at my Dad's place. I was a dedicated free weight guy, but I could see it was a useful machine. Fast forward a few years--one of my colleagues at work was selling his. Turned out it was one of the ancient therapy devices, but I used it every workout. It didn't fold, was 9 feet long, had no way to add weight, but the glideboard and track were really long, which made it in some ways superior to modern offerings. I had that for about 10 years. Then my wife owned one, & when we got together I began to use it. When we moved to Arizona, I bought an older one with a longer glideboard, but I joined a gym as well, & devoted most of my energy to the gym. I recently dumped the gym & moved my workouts back home. Back to the total gym. What people don't appreciate (esp. Valuable for us older people) is that a major component of the benefits one gets is more flexibility due to the stretching in many movements. At this point I'm using only the total gym. It does work well. I still plan to rebuild my home weightlifting equipment, time & space permitting, but I could probably use only the total gym and do quite well by adding weight & resistance bands, as you have. However, I've lifted since I was 15--62 years, so the iron is sort of in my blood. Lots of good things about weights, but numerous injuries (which I've had) aren't among them. I've never had an injury on the total gym, although I've used it a lot. Thanks for your video, & recommendations.
That's an awesome story. Thank you so much for sharing that. You're right, that I've never heard of anyone that's commented in telling me they hurt themselves on a Total Gym.
I have had a total gym for over 30 years now; before many knew anything about it really. It truly does what it says a "Total" body workout! I was very interested to find your channel and hear how popular it has become.
Thank you. I will look into making a video on that. I know a lot of people are into him, I honestly haven't haven't watched much or anything regarding his content. But I will look into it.
After a major hip surgery , I performed much of my PT post surgery on a total gym . It was due to THIS PIECE OG EQUIPMENT I was reintroduced to successfully re strengthening my hip, leg and lower back in a gentle fashion and grew into building more and more strength !!
Total gym is not a scam, I know from experience, the only time it doesn't work for you is inconsistencies in your workout routine and not eating healthy
Mind if I ask how old you are? I've been watching you for a while and can see your physical changes. You are looking really good by the way. I imagine considering how jacked you look, people are assuming you have to be using other equipment. Your attention to more functional training reminds me a bit of another utube channel ( the bioneer) . If you haven't seen him you'd probably enjoy his stuff.
I am 90 years old. My goal using the total gym is to maintain body muscles for everyday activities and maintaining our home and lawn. I use my total gym for about 45 minutes almost every day, and I walk at least a mile every day either outside or using my treadmill if there is bad weather. I am reasonably fit and maintain proper body weight. All of my live I was guessed to be 10 years younger than I am. Now that I am an old fart I am guessed to be about 20 years younger.
I don't own a total gym but my workout buddy does and we sometimes do a strictly total gym workout, especially on cardio days. I am a former Army Ranger and can tell you, our extreme workouts had nothing to do with the gym and I was truly in the best shape of my life! So all the naysayers who say "no serious athlete or trainer would buy this" are tunnel visioned and limited in their creativity toward exercise. ANY form of controlled movement with any degree of resistance and repetition is GOOD and BENEFICIAL, especially for those of us in "senior" category... range of motion is king as you get older! I still push the steel and workout at gyms but concentrate on range of motion now. I appreciate what you provide and maybe someday I'll get my own TG!!
I had a total gym years ago. I didn’t use this equipment solely, during that time. I would use this in the morning and then hit the weights in the evening. The total gym had improved my flexibility and also helped me hit some of the smaller muscle groups without the dangers behind using free weights. I was in my best shape during that time and plan to get another total gym soon.
I start my workouts by lifting with a straight bar doing curls, overhead presses, and a few other lifts for a few sets. Then right after I hop on the total gym and do all the arm, shoulder, and back workouts I would with dumbells and I really feel the burn when im done and get way better looking pumps.
I am 40 years old. I was active working with traditional weights. I am not looking to bulk up. Just get in some better shape. I play a lot of golf and I am looking to get better range of motion in my golf swing. I am looking for opinions on resistance training. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the comment Daniel. Let me know if there's something specific you're wondering about with regards to resistance training. Otherwise, across the board some form of consistent resitance training will always be beneficial for to your life (and improve your golf game). I'm biased towards a Total Gym for a number of reasons, so I do think using these machines will allow you to reach the goals you listed.
Great advice. I had to listen to the whole explanation. The biggest part to take away. If you want to lift heavy weight? Lift heavy weight. You will not be able to lift heavy weight with a total gym. You will build a tone well balanced body with a total gym.
Bought an old xl machine after seeing the Chuck Norris infomercial one night back in 2005. It worked, there are some excercises that cant be replicated with free weights. Never injured myself on it, cant say the same with free weights
Hi, I found your video very good and informative. I just ordered a home gym anniversary edition and have not received it yet. I noticed that you have additional bands wrapped around the sliding seat on the bottom. Where did you get those bands, to add additional resistance, and how do you know how much resistance you are adding? Thank you!
They are just standard loop style resistance bands. I do have promo code with Serious Steel "SBT" to save 10% off or Clench Fitness Bands "SBT15" for 15% off. Those are 41in bands, but I've also used Serious Steel 37in and 32in bands. But for sure these machines are not designed for it, so it's something to be done at your risk.
I'm looking in to buying a Total Gym. When you were doing leg presses in this video (9:22) you seemed to be struggling severely but there were no resistance bands or weights on your Total Gym which means you were lifting about 60% of your body weight given the angle your Total Gym was set at. Had you done an extreme amount of leg presses at that point? I totally believe that resistance training can produce muscles like yours but that seems a bit unbelievable.
I messed up my knee by the work im in and ended up getting a fracture around my knee cap, it wasn't bad enough to need surgery but, a brace and crutches so that is when I used my total gym to work my knee out along with going to therapy. No surgery needed fully healed, back to working out on my total gym.
Recently found your channel and I'm a massive fan. I'm looking at purchasing one of these again as I had to sell my first one due to lack of space but I really enjoyed using it when I had it. I want to use it in conjunction with resistance bands. Is there a way of attaching resistance bands to it to increase the resistance as the model I am looking at doesn't have the bar that allows weight plates to be added. Thanks.
I think what this piece of equipment does is take what's so great about good old fashioned basic calisthenics performed at high reps and does one of 2 things: make certain training more accessible. Like squats and pull ups, a hack squat or single Leg Hack Squat on this sliding bench is much more accessible to some than a typical Squat or a pistol squat. You can more safely take your legs to Failure with your body weight with this equipment like a improvement of the sissy squat essentially. Pull up as well, that's even more obvious how this piece of equipment makes the pull up accessible. Now the expansion upon calisthenics. This takes your bodyweight and roughly puts you through a spectrum of regression/progression with your BW as resistance and cross applies it to virtually any cable machine type exercise, and cable supplemental variation exercises one would use instead of your typical barbell or dumbbell exercises for body parts just with your bodyweight providing the resistance instead of a cable weight stack. This is actually quite genius. Whoever thought to take the concept of the versatility of a Cable machine but it's your own bodyweight your lifting through a sliding bench that also is a bodyweight Hack Squat sled, I mean amazing.
Hi Mike! Even though I won't get a total gym anytime soon but probably several years down the line when i own my own place, how does the resistance feel on the total gym compared to a resistance band and free weights?
I just got one as a gift! Can't wait to try it ! I was very fit, but life happened, and I gave up on myself!.. I will give an update ! Thanks for the video. This really helped me!
I have the Total Gym 14000 that I got back around 2006 and it’s built like a tank. I always come back to it. It’s long discontinued but will the attachments from the new models fit? Your videos have inspired me to start using it yet again.
Ppl tend to forget you can get a damn good work out using no weight at all just by doing a shit load of reps. For example do 200 shoulder press no weight and tell me it's not affective. So by this example alone you can see the benefits of a TG resistance workout.
great video. speaking of rehab I'd love to see a video where you take some of kneesovertoesguy's exercises and apply to a total gym? i'm sure i'm not the only one with knees that could use some work :)
Great video! Couple questions.....I'm 6'8, and have read that if you're tall, it's a problem to use this, is that true? Also, can you do any lat exercises with this? Thanks in advance!
It really depends on personal preference and your flexibility on getting into certain moves. You're on the taller side for sure. But yes, lat exercises are amazing on this. Specifically the pull ups and facedown or face up pull overs
@@hybridresistance Thank you for the reply. In your opinion, should I not let my height be a deal breaker, or should I just learn to be 'creative' with this machine?
I’ve owned a basic Total Gym for about 35(?) years or so. Wore it out in about 1 year. Rebuilt all the rolling gear and replaced the cable. Still, after all these years, the TG and a doorway pull up bar are still my core strength training. Works great, never get tired of working out on it. Simple and effective.
I had QVCs Phil Thynnes model for over 20 years, the reason I got rid of it was the rollers went and I couldn't get replacements. I am currently looking at the XLS model, any thoughts.
Did you ever check with Huck Products who makes replacement rollers? Otherwise I think the XLS is great, I personally just prefer the FIT all around, but it's up to you if honestly it's worth the extra money for the extra increments on the tower.
Love your reviews and training videos. Based on your reviews, which sliding bench trainer would you purchase? I am very experienced weight trainer (over 40 years) who recently switched over to resistance bands from weights. Still do some weights but now mostly resistance bands. Just need some advice on which slider to purchase. Thanks in advance!!!
The best overall pick for the $$ would be a FIT or GR8FLEX for a simple answer if it were me. A GTS is nice but those are ~4k. If you ever decide to pick up a FIT this link helps the channel out : www.anrdoezrs.net/click-100825257-15404309 or a GR8FLEX using code "GR8MIKE" gets you a special edition carbon fiber model along with free upgraded bands when both are added in the cart in checkout. Should see "free" when code is entered at GR8flex.com
To say this is ineffective is to say a row machine is ineffective and essentially to say rowing is not a sport. Only thing with the total gym as opposed to a rowing machine is you can lay or sit on bench in opposite direction and push.
Love it. Great points. I've been doing my own total gym thing off and on since 2010 being creative with mods kinda like you and it's just so accessible, the only way I've found that works for me. Just found your channel, wish you'd have been here 12 years ago! Thx brother
I’ve been faithfully using the total gym now for 11 months. I’m 57 years old, and I can see results from when I first started. I still don’t do it enough. I also run 2-5 miles each workout. Is that to much cardio. If so, why?
Great to hear Dale. I think cardio is still important for everyone so that's great you're doing that. If you're seeing results and enjoying that, then I'd keep it going. You can try dialing up the total gym workouts and cutting back the cardio on total miles per workout. I personally like to keep the TG and cardio workouts on separate days, but that's because I just wouldn't have enough time.
Maybe you can add some meal idea plans. I get bored with the same breakfast. However would like to see a video on how you shop for each meal. One or two ideas. Thanks.
I think it's amazing some ppl will will 1. Forget calisthenics works and that's just body weight.. But 2. Based on their reasoning.. All these women doing body and booty workouts.. Should not work also
What is your opinion on the 1900 model I know it’s a lower end model I don’t have a bunch of money I want to just get moving and try to build some consistency of using this piece of equipment and I have the opportunity to buy one pretty much brand new with all the attachments for $120.
Thanks Anne. Very inspiring comment! You're my goal for sure.
@@hybridresistance HOW CAN YOU WORK OUT YOUR TRAPS ON A TOTAL GYM, CAN YOU USE BANDS OR WHAT ?
Bob and Brad stretches have helped me out a lot. I plan to get a total gym when I return to the US. Now I use resistance bands which work well.
@@johnnygunzfilmbuff7821 he was paid to endorse it for 30 years
I gave up the gym membership and switched to a total gym and I have better results from a total gym
Amen brother! Great to hear from another convert.
Ur not the only one... I as well
I looked on their chart what do they mean if you use the pulley it's 50% weight? Is that an additional pulley? Because this gym works on the pulley.
Me too I love what I have total gym xl
I started working on my total gym 6 months ago and with proper diet have lost 35 pounds using only the total gym and walking. I have definition again in my arms back and chest and I am 53 years old. It is an incredible machine.
Thanks for sharing that Anthony. That's awesome progress!
Used a low end total gym in my 40s. Dropped ~60 lbs in about 8 months, working out 30 mins a day and cutting out junk food. Now in my late 50s and gonna do it again. Saves a lot of time instead of a gym membership.
Very cool to hear. You definitely don't need a super expensive unit. What model do you have?
@@hybridresistance total gym 1500
Biggest maintenance expenditure was replacing the cables. Didn't buy them from total gym, had them locally made at a wire n fasteners shop... cost something like $20 a piece...cheap.
I've had my total gym for 22 years now. I purchased it along with all the attachments it came with at the time. As long as you have a total gym that can support weight plates you cant go wrong. I still go from one exercise to another, so it works my cardio which is a plus. I can do a full body in 20 minutes and that is 3 sets.
22 years? I'm only 23 lol
So how many times have you had to replace parts? What model do you have?
@@kevinpoynter6697 I have the total gym 11000 and ive never replaced any parts. I have cleaned the glideboard rollers, cable pulleys, and frame to make sure everything stays smooth
@@robertdirocco1885 The 11000 is the model I bought back in 1999. It truly is a well-built, sturdy, and durable strength-building device!
You're right about that, the machine can easily stimulate you to go work.
Love to hear it Todd!
Also destroys traditional weight lifting by saving you a fortune on weights and equipment
@@solaurum5766 Very true I feel the same.
That's powerful David. Another huge and understated point is how many people with injuries are still able to resistance train with these machines.
Thank you for sharing that story. I think a lot of people were forced to think outside the box these last few years.
Exactly Lou. I'd never knock bodyweight training, but a TG is a just superior form of bodyweight training.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Barbara. Very cool to hear that both you and your husband are seeing results from it!
Great video! You’ve single-handedly revolutionized the sliding bench industry.
Very grateful for those kind words. I think we’re all along for the ride of seeing the fitness industry give more respect to these machines.
Thank you so much for sharing all of that!
Holy crap. I’ve had this machine for 15 years and never knew I could look that ripped with it. Well, ive dusted the old beauty off and away we go. I have runners knee and want to try something different to build strength. Very excited to find this channel!
Excited you found it as well my friend.
Thanks Ronnie for sharing your experience
Yup....what I said. lol
Thanks for sharing your personal and clinical experience with these machines.
I was one of those people who first used the Total Gym from a PT facility. I was a firm believer since then.
Completely agree. I wish I had started earlier and used this equipment more consistently in my younger days.
I’ve been using mine for over 20 years and love it!
Awesome. Love hearing from you long time users.
That's incredible brother. Thank you sharing all of that and congratulations on all your hard work.
Every time I watch your videos, I get motivated to put my trust in Total Gym again, even though the idea of traditional bodybuilding is so ingrained in my mind. Thanks so much!
Thanks again for watching. You could always do both and ease yourself into it to gain it’s trust.
Excellent point.
I love that my friend! Thanks for sharing.
Very good information. I’ve been thinking of purchasing a total gym and canceling my gym membership. I’m over the overcrowded gym scene and having to wait on equipment and having to load and unload hammer strength machines
I don't think you'd regret it. I loved the gym and never thought I'd leave, but I honestly enjoy working out on these machines more than the gym.
Having it in my home, is life changing. I have MS and movement is key. Love the video
Thank you. Very happy to hear that a TG is useful for you with your condition.
Love the videos very informative. Keep it up. I feel total gym in combination with some dumbbell and barbell exercises makes for a good variety and adds to the muscle confusion/growth and keeps workouts interesting and fun
Thank you. Yes, can’t argue that a combination of other means is definitely great.
Love hearing that brother. Curious if you'd consider having a brief interview on your comment? Feel like it would be beneficial for people to hear.
@@hybridresistance absolutely!
I am 72, I have owned a Total Gym since 2001. I love my Total Gym. I will use it for the rest of my life.
Great to hear Milie.
A 6'3 frame
Awesome to hear that story.
Which one did you purchase? I'm eyeing tge G5
@@mymiracle79 started out with the supreme. I’m happy with it
Thanks for your videos!
That's cool I can see where this would help with motorcross.
Also anyone who says this is gimmick has not taken a Total Gym class with a certified trainer. I was feeling the burn in minutes.
Sliding bench training is a great way to work out . These videos are awesome and are far more informative than the brochure that comes with it. I believe anyone that wants to feel great and get in shape should use one . Keep up the good work big guy! I love mine
Thank you so much for those positive comments. Always love hearing how much others have enjoyed using these machines.
If I take off the middle pulley then the "bench press" at level 7 of 8 - is for sure a 3 to 6 rep max.
Awesome to hear you bouncing back.
You're body looks great using the total gym. Way better than these huge gut bodybuilders nowadays.
Thanks Mike, appreciate it.
Awesome to hear that. Thanks for sharing.
I'm 38. I appreciate those positive comments. I'll check out that channel as well. Thanks again.
I snickered when the wife bought one in 02 but after tweaking the movements it's a plus.will it replace free wts no but a good safe alternative
Huge fan of Arthur Jones, now huge fan of yours! Keep up the great work and please keep the videos coming. 3 months into my XLS and loving the gains.
Awesome to hear of the 3 month progress.
Thanks so much for that comment and your service! You're dead on with those points.
I just found a total gym XL on the side of the road. Seems pretty good. The chest press/flye was much harder than I thought it would be.
Thanks for sharing that.
I start my workouts by lifting with a straight bar doing curls, overhead presses, and a few other lifts for a few sets. Then right after I hop on the total gym and do all the arm, shoulder, and back workouts I would with dumbells and I really feel the burn when im done and get way better looking pumps.
Love that brother.
Thanks Lamar, you nailed. It's one of many tools people can take or use for their physical fitness.
Awesome to hear that success story.
Thanks.

Wow, I never considered using a band with my total gym. I love mine.
You are very clear and honest and cover everything in a well balanced way. Infinite Respect to you my friend.
I appreciate that my friend.
Great comment and points. Thanks for that
Probably stupid question - but the exercise you're doing from 8:25-8:30 is great for your chest right?
That would primarily be targeting your lats.
Hi Mike!
Even though I won't get a total gym anytime soon but probably several years down the line when i own my own place, how does the resistance feel on the total gym compared to a resistance band and free weights?
In my opinion, it feels like cable tension.
Total Gym ym is no scam...in 2005, I bought the Total Gym 1500 from Academy. It worked every way it was advertised.
I just got one as a gift! Can't wait to try it ! I was very fit, but life happened, and I gave up on myself!.. I will give an update ! Thanks for the video. This really helped me!
Thanks for watching and for that comment.
I have the Total Gym 14000 that I got back around 2006 and it’s built like a tank. I always come back to it. It’s long discontinued but will the attachments from the new models fit? Your videos have inspired me to start using it yet again.
I don't believe the new attachments would fit those models. Thanks again for watching and the positive comments.
Ppl tend to forget you can get a damn good work out using no weight at all just by doing a shit load of reps. For example do 200 shoulder press no weight and tell me it's not affective. So by this example alone you can see the benefits of a TG resistance workout.
Awesome points brother.
great video. speaking of rehab I'd love to see a video where you take some of kneesovertoesguy's exercises and apply to a total gym? i'm sure i'm not the only one with knees that could use some work :)
this would actually be great 4 ppl who deal w/slipped disc every now & then...still do scale dwn pull-ups but w/no strain on the lower bak area...
Thanks a bunch! Not sure which one of the two I will purchase but may go with FIT since it will help your channel.
Great video. How long are the bands you use for extra resistance?
I honestly don't know the exactly length.
To say this is ineffective is to say a row machine is ineffective and essentially to say rowing is not a sport. Only thing with the total gym as opposed to a rowing machine is you can lay or sit on bench in opposite direction and push.
I love barbells and dumbbells, but the T-gym is great for pull-ups and press-ups and is also great for pullovers and seated rows.
Love it. Great points. I've been doing my own total gym thing off and on since 2010 being creative with mods kinda like you and it's just so accessible, the only way I've found that works for me. Just found your channel, wish you'd have been here 12 years ago! Thx brother
Thanks man. Very happy you found the channel.
I honestly think any model would work and be able to provide results. Just start when and with what you can.
Do you have a video on where you got the bands to add resistance to the board, and how you use them?
Here you go ruclips.net/video/_5HtMUv8MSc/видео.html
