And where are you goin' Tar Top
Where's J. C. And The Chosen Few
I saw the Flash without T. Gentry
And B. V. left for Malibu

They should play this song on the radio more instead of the garbage on there today!!!
Amen Brother
Amen brother
Totally agree and they make me proud to be a native Alabamian.
Heard it today on 105.5 in Sparta,TN and had to share it!
Agreed
I do not know at all why the song did not go number one for the most iconic legendary band of all time the mighty Alabama rest in peace Jeff Cook
Why this song never made number 1, I’ll never understand. Thanks Randy!!!!!!
I never understood either. They thought it would break the streak but they were so popular then it should have made number one anyway.
People outside of locals and friends didn't understand it fully, just us folks who'd seen Teddy play with the Bickerson Flash, Jeff with the Chosen Few, and who knew who BV was and what happened to him. It was a very personal song, a memorial. I don't think it mattered that it didn't sell as many. It's one of my favorites. It brings back memories of Jeff playing guitar on the elementary school playground bleachers, Teddy and Ricky Denson jamming in my Mom's basement, good times and sad.
@@CarolED35986 One of the best songs they did.
I don't have a clue neither why this song was not a number one hit for Alabama is definitely worthy of a number one spot
Randy Owens is as good a vocalist as has ever sang into a microphone. He deserves to be mentioned with Merle, George, Charlie, Keith, Vince and what ever great singer you can think of. He doesn’t get his due because he was lead singer in a great band.
Greatest Male Voice in Country ALONG with Kenny Rogers and Ronnie Milsap, IN FACT< I cant think of ANYONE better in any FORM of music...also, ALL Three could SING any genre of music and bring them together
*Rest in peace Jeff Cook.* 😪💔
R.I.P Jeff Cook .Here in S.C There Hangs a Memory in the Bowery .and always will ty you and the rest of Alabama for Music and Memories
This song brings both tears of joy and sadness. My dads friend's called him tar top. Well tar top passed away 3 years ago. He was my dad. He raised us on alabama. That's why I will always be a FAN. Love you dad.
So sorry for your loss. My dad was a tar top, too. We were raised on Alabama and I'm proud to say its my home state. My tar top passed away in 2012 but I was lucky to have him for 48 years.
My favorite Alabama song. Goosebumps every time I hear this
I've been a fan all my 40+ years and never heard this song.
August 3, 1987: RCA Records released Alabama's "Tar Top" to country radio stations.
August 6, 1987: Alabama's "Tar Top" music video premieres on TNN and CMT.
👍
Totally underated song, alabama is awesome
the greatest band of all time no one will even come close to these guys ever the greatest band of all time the mighty Alabama
These guys could sing the phone book and make it a hit! One of the best of all times and all genres.
Very true :)
And yet three years later still feel the same, not too many people's music proceed and time pass that of the people who created it Willie Waylon Highwaymen Beatles Elvis and countless others in all genres
Even fewer artists create song with messages that continue to endure throughout future decades, this is 1985 music yet what have we done since to pass it on down? Been 36 years yet we're still making the same mistakes... coal oil conglomerates have crushed hopes of clean efficient fuels and thus the future of future Generations
Great song! I had to come watch the video after Randy mentioned how special this song is and his son is on the video in his book.
Still gives me goosebumps.
I lived on sand mountain in Geraldine. It faces lookout mountain and Fort Payne lies between the two. Most of what I remember is how much they gave back to their home town. Also they were so down to earth.
Im from Tx and i can listen to em without the fiddle..but man can jeff make that fiddle ride like an 8 second ride..pure musical magic..my first concert was an Alabama concert in grand prairie Tx. 1992..right after desert storm..a 4th of july party for the troops..the seats stinked grandpa was cheap Lol ..but i didn't care..it was amazing and they put on one heck of a show..and they were loud and the music and fireworks was just all my little 8 yearold self could take i still have that memory....best country band ever.
Why dont we have country like this anymore :( makes me sad
Some good ole boys who are also proud to be from a southern state!! Southern Pride!!!
benny jackson,, Hell Yeah im a North Alabama man born and raised. Huntsville, Alabama! One Hell'uva band right here friends. Everything they touched was pure Gold! Great music, Great memories!
I'm from Fort Payne, grew up in Collinsville , right down the road. Knew these folks from grade school, haven't seen them in Years, moved to Texas long ago...
ROLL TIDE ROLL
ACC's #85 song of the '87 survey year. Alabama hit #7 in Billboard, 10-31-87. God bless y'all, Alabama cousins!
RIP JC
These boys are so good, even I wouldn't mind going TO Alabama.
To see THEM, that is.
hey I'm 23 years old an love this type of music (y)
My favorite band of all time, hands down. They completely inspired my songwriting and singing style. The 1st song I ever learned to actually play and sing was Dixie Boy, and I love to cover their songs still today!
I'm sitting here at the Bowery tonight and enjoying the time
May God continue you to bless the boys in the band. You will always be in our hearts. We miss you Jeff fly high your work on earth may be through but great memories we still carry. Jesus loves y'all and so do I from a very long #1 fan
these are from here Fort Payne Alabama they got their fan club here we grew up with them my mom actually worked with Randy Owen in a sock mill here before he got famous she says he use to say I'm going to be a singer one day I've met Jeff &Randy several times seem like really nice guys Jeff has a radio show on95.9fm in Guntersville Alabama & Randy has one on 97.3 FM classic country in Chattanooga Tennessee on Saturdays Jeff also has a few albums out with his all-star band & you'd have to check what month it is in but they also have Jeff Cook days in Guntersville Alabama
These were the days with a little hard work go along way
R.I.P. Jeff Cook
This is the song that broke the band's #1 streak. Still, a really good song that should have reached higher than #7.
+jarjon76 If I recall correctly, they knew it would break their streak... or at least suspected, but wanted to do this song. So they didn't really care. In my opinion, it really should have gone #1. It's a great song!
Now that you mention it, I remember hearing something about that on the radio at the time. Yes, it's a great song. It doesn't matter where it charted, it's just good song.
+jarjon76 Yes this is the song that broke the streak. However it was written about their life and times in the music world. Randy was being tempted to go solo and this was his answer for all of those who trying to sway him. His uncle gave him the nick name 'tartop" when he was a kid.
+BIGG BULLS Thanks for the great info. I did not know about people trying to sway Randy into going solo. I'm glad he chose not to. I always wondered where the "tar top" name came from. If I recall correctly, "B.V" refers to their old drummer Bennett Vartanian, but I could be wrong.
+jarjon76 You're correct on B.V., also "JC And the Chosen Few" was, I believe, Jeff's first band. The song is totally autobiographical for the band. Though, I don't believe Jeff is referenced in the song. Tar Top = Randy, T Gentry = Teddy (of course), JC & The Chosen Few = Jeff, B.V. = Bennett Vartanian
I was blessed to hear this song many times in concert in the late 80's and early 90's ~ thank you Mama and Daddy ❤️
always love the bama boys
One of there best songs
Hands down the best country music band _of all time,_ and not just because their music is stellar, but also because they're some of the nicest, humblest, _realest_ people you could ever hope to meet. Never ever forgot where they came from and proud of it.
They (the collective country music industry) just don't make music like this anymore...
ON PURPOSE< Kenny Rogers said in the 90's it became a business, NO LONGER an ART FORM...bye bye Bocephus, Patty Loveless, Waylon Willie, even Kenny, EVEN EVEN!!! Alabama eventually...Bro Country NOW
I was a "Heavy Metal 'Head' ' as a Pre-Teen & in High School & NOT 'Well Rounded". When I was 16 the legal drinking age was 18 & I use to go to Click's Billiard's & listening to the Jukebox when Alabama played-also George Strait & Hank Williams Jr. it sorta grew on me. I am now more 'Well Rounded" at 53 years old. Alabama got 'Artist of the Decade in the 80"s'. Now that is impressive.
All in with the previous. RIP Mr Jeff Cook. Thank You for your marvelous musicianship and all the great songs you gave us.
Yes it is ❤
Every time I hear this song, I think of what it takes to work for a living, and at the end of the day, it still feels great!!!!!
hay Randy, met you boys in a truck stop in Winfeild W. VA. in Feb. of 1981. old flame was on the charts with a bullet. I knew nothing about you or country music, I was a rocker from Cleveland oh. out in a blizzard at 3am, sitting in a truck stop, wait-en for first light so i could go out in search of my first true love. no one had herd of you boys then. Hell I remember you try-en to convince people you went a softball team! But Randy we spoke for a movement, and you asked me what I was doing out in this, too young to be a driver, must be a woman? Yes I said, you said " let me know how that works out for you, and i said, let me know how how that country music thing works for you, and you all walked out. Well Randy, its been a life time ago. I see how the music thing worked. Would love to tell you how the LOVE thing worked.......
John, can you let us know what happened..?
EVERY SONG IS GREAT LOVE THE MUSIC 🎶.BORN COUNTRY 🎶...ROLL ON BOYS SEE YALL IN COLUMBUS GA. NEXT MONTH...
To this day...this will always be a favorite song by Alabama.
Just a GREAT GREAT song not to be a big hit for Alabama.
Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Alabama's best song ever!
Loving these guys more than ever.
Randy's favorite song
RIP Jeff
Saw them play in Tacoma, WA, Oklahoma City and...yep, Myrtle Beach back in the day. My favorite video of theirs all these years later is still this one, it's got it all: great songwriting, incredible voices and is shot beautifully. Awesomeness!
Hi Arrabella
Hope you’re doing okay ?
Would give anything to have seen y'all in Your Glory Days
According to Randy, this was his favorite video that they made. That's his son Heath on the bicycle. This song is about the band, the boys and the genre of country music. Alabama wasn't any particular music genre. I believe that's why they called the album, "JustUs" and you'll notice he closes this song with the title of the album. It doesn't get any better than this. Read Randy's book "Born Country" for many interesting tidbits about the band and the man that most every music lover loved, Randy Owen and Alabama.
I'm from Alabama and grew up listening to Alabama. Have been lucky to see them in concert several times over 2 decades. I named my son Owen after Randy Owen. Love them, love their music and love their pride in their music and home state. Best band ever, hands down.
@@keeganstewart3916 Agreed, none better
They RULED Country's GREATEST and most TRULY Diverse Decade, the 80's, with Kenny Rogers- both of them EASILY crossed and mixed genres effortlessly...both loved each other. Now Country is DEAD and GONE but their music is FOREVER!
Some of their older stuff from the late 70's didn't sound much different than Southern Rock from the same time period. Alabama could have gone on tour with the Marshall Tucker Band or Skynard and fit in quite nicely. They did a cover of "Can't You See" with Teddy singing lead, its really good. I have the live album from 1988 and its on there. I think it was recorded at June Jam that year.
@@gregrowe1168 Yes, I've heard that. One of the best of all times in my opinion, Alabama
Being from north Alabama, this brings back so many memories of the bands mentioned in this song. The Chosen Few were Jeff Cooks bamd, Teddy Gentry played in The Flash, and The Malibues played at the Beach Ball Club in my hometown. Later, my best friend from high school played in Alabama at The Boondocks Lounge just outside of Birmingham. Great memories. Great memories in this song.
wut part of north al. thats where i reside my bud
Huntsville here
I'm not from 'bama but my first driving job was McClendon in Lafayette running out of all the papermills from Prattville to Courtland then a while later spent close to 10 yrs running car parts into Lincoln for Honda.
Awesome state and band.
If I could only find a hot chic that understands this song.
One of my favorites!
I saw the Flash, and she was Brilliant 🔥
Still loving Alabama in 2022!!❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I was Raised in Western Ky. Got my start driving truck at McClendon Lafayette AL. in '96 '97. Wound up hauling Honda parts to Lincoln Al till the tsnami. in Japan. Still love that state.
What a great tune
So.eone sould make an album of just the songs about coming up in the industry. And make it a true mix.
Rock country all of it. Tar Top would be one of those.
First time I've heard this song. Love it!
Great Song!!! But there's no I-40 in Alabama, there was a pic of an Interstate 40 sign in the video.
💕💕💕 this one
one of my faves of this group
The Tar Top is the Bowery in Myrtle Beach, I seen em there when they were called Wild Country
This is my favorite song by Alabama
Where are you going tar top show me the way I just might follow
the greatest band of all time and beyond legendary iconic the greatest band of all time the mighty Alabama and these boys keep on going and going
I've referred to them as the Beatles of country music, I think its a fitting analogy.
I love this song ❤️
Aug 2020 and still listening
The country music of today needs to sit back and listen to what country music is about it im sorry in my preference new pop country sucks..Alan and king George ..better live forever if we wanna see true country artist.Alabama will always reign best band ever ..
Saw them last night at the Iowa state fair and were great.
Really liked this song when it first came out, as I just started out in college. Wow, 31 years ago? Today is the first time I ever saw this music video.
EDIT: Always thought the "J.C." meant "Jesus Christ", but it's actually "Jeff Cook".
EDIT: Is "Tar Top" a reference to Randy himself??
Yes, his black hair = tar top
Tar Top was Randy's childhood nickname cause of his black hair
Yes- his hair is very black and they called him tar top. very cute!!! My mom loved Randy and this song.
Nice drums 😉
What a freakin' great song 💯🙏
💌

Not to take away from the song, but is that little boy on the bicycle the first "Quentin" from "Grace Under Fire" t.v. series?? ....
Always loved this song and video! Always considered"Dancin, Shaggin'..." The " sequel"! Lol...
alwayscrazy1 It is Randy’s son, Heath when he was a little boy.
Who is JC and T Gentry???? Also what does he mean by tartop??? Awesome song!
JC is Jeff Cook, TGentry- Teddy Gentry- Tartop was Randy's nickname due to his black hair!
@@piscesempress1978 makes perfect sense!! Thanks for the comment
Guy was your friend (1984). You always had him there discouraging Georgia. Where were you. Did you ever encourage her.
Im trying to figure out if this is a new song
Over 30 years old, released in 1987 on the Just Us album. It was the song that broke the #1 streak at 41. They knew at the time it probably wouldn't hit #1 but they really wanted to release it. A very personal song about their lives.
Hi Ginger
Hope you’re doing okay ?
Who is BV does anybody know?
Please for the love of God NEVER use that wannabe poser pop music playing kane brown as an add for Alabama that’s just disrespectful to REAL COUNTRY LEGENDS and REAL COUNTRY MUSIC!
Mr. Mark ("never was a member") Herndon on drums....What BS!!!!
He was on the throne during all those hits. He was as much of the band as they were. Sad they couldn't work it out.
i know the boy is Randy's son Heath. Is the woman Randy's wife?
I was watching this but buffs bad and all videos and movies bad sorry for this
Your connection must be too slow, no problems here
did the same to me
RIP Jeff
