Creating a handmade custom DIY surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design.
Collages made out of paper have a custom made feel that you can't get from a digital collage made in Photoshop. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!
Want to try creating your own? Just grab a magazine, scissors, and a glue stick!

I'm a harvester! I collecting continuously so I have that "right" image when inspiration strikes. Nothing worse than not having that image when you want it or spending a lot of extra time cutting rather that assembling! The method I use is laying out my images in a magnetic old school photo album. That way my cuttings don't get damaged in folders or sleeves. The albums are really cheap at thrift stores. I organize in general categories and store them on a book shelf. Might be alot for some but after a lot of trial and error I found it works best for me.

I liked that idea but wonder if they would get stuck over time...unless you don't keep them that long!

@@trialsbikeguy the pages are stock cards with a slightly sticky surface covered by a thin plastic sheet. You can lay out your cut outs smoothly preventing wrinkles. The plastic covers prevent any other damage while you store your image until use.

I actually use a 2-drawer file cabinet and use hanging files for the cut outs. I put completed collages in protective sleeves and store in notebook binders. Most of my collages are 8-1/2" x 11". I have a lot of books to harvest images from. I like your organization tips!

I’m super unorganized with all of my pages and clippings, but the upside is that I stumble upon a lot of cool things when I’m looking for a specific image. I did just invest in a 12-drawer rolling cart from Michael’s, and I have started putting my pages into different broad categories. It’s still pretty messy, but it’s a start!

I use a 3 ring binder also. I have labeled sections and in those I have sheet protectors as well as static cling photo album pages. Full pages and uncut items I put in the sheet protectors and the things I've already fussy cut I put in the photo album pages.

I use a lot of really small images a half an inch or less. I use an old school photo album where you peel back the plastic sheet and the page has a slight tackiness. If you are not a child of the 1970's or 80's not sure you will know what I mean. I often find new old stock at thrift stores. I use those albums for my best pieces or more delicate pieces. Pieces I see right away that I know I will use. Others go into the page protectors and a binder like yours. I use those plastic 12 x12 scrapbook boxes to separate ongoing projects. I have so much to sort through. I try to do it and then get distracted and start creating.

I put the cut parts in empty candy canes.
For smaller parts, I put them in a food grade zip bag.

I have a tower of 9 shallow wooden drawers that fit a4 papers perfectly. I also use plastic sleeves, quality thick ones not thin and put a piece of card stock in each to allow you to see images. I've built up an amazing assortment of images over the years. Someone was giving away 50 garden mags last week...so I harvested them all and spent a whole day cutting out roses etc. Can't wait to use them!

I have drawer kabinets for the whole page , small drawer cabinets for the smaller .
The best way to store the very small parts is a postagestamp album.
Small bands to tuck in many many small images.
the best storage tip is always leave them in the books or magazines.
Now I have piles and piles of books and magazines but I cant throw out anyting.
Sometimes I am in the mood to cut out stuff and not collaging.
Thats why I have so many cutouts.
Ah well, as long as it makes joy, why not :)

You would choke if you saw my collage images lol! Seriously! I do harvest mags, some books, but also have full pages ad well as pieces I also cut out to use and didn’t. I have a rolling filing cab that has about 12 or so drawers that are like a 13 x 13 x 2. Great for filing them and rifling through when you need something. I also have way too many books and collage image books that I’ve bought !
I have to admit though, I don’t just do collage, I love to glue book even more. Hence, all the images. So fun though
I enjoyed the video. Have a great weekend

I still haven't started "Gluebooking/Collaging"... but I have collected a ton of images...... none of which are fussy cut, yet.
I tried to organized them all in a similar system as you have, but I have way too many.... my page protectors are too full and it's not working for me, because my binders are too full..... I'm sure that once I finally get to work, and use some.... I'll be able to manage it all much better than my current mess.
if I can get my technical issues sorted out, I will try to do a video about all this, soon.
My main issue is that I don't know what to use toglue in, or on.
the piece of card stock is a good idea, I will do that, when I get to a manageable level.....

I use the same binders for my cut outs but I prefer the static cling photo pages that come with them, I can’t fit as many images but then I’m able to see every singe piece I have.
I have to “process” magazines and books as soon as I get them lol I take out everything I’m going to want to use and then put them in my backgrounds files or cut them out to put in my binders. It’s a LOT more work but I hate flipping through books and magazines and finding cut out pages lol.
Love you vids! They always give me new inspiration when my creativity is feeling stale 🥰
