even if you don't own the whole v collection just having analog lab v is like owning part of the v collection. analog lab is just a host for some new presets plus some of the presets from all the different synths so when you buy the collection you unlock all the presets in analog lab with the individual synths. @@HOLLASOUNDS

The way he jacked that Timbo beat stutter and odd-rhythmic fleury of songs like “Are You That Somebody” and made it into “Say My Name” (because Timbaland would only do remixes for non-“family” members at the time) was wild.

Correct, the Brandy albums "Full Moon" and "Never Say Never" are filled with arpeggio-based tracks. I was acquainted with someone who collaborated with Jerkins in the studio, and they mentioned that he produced tracks for Britney Spears' album in just one day-he's incredibly efficient. This person was attempting to teach me how to write and complete a song for a track within a few hours, aiming to instill efficiency in my songwriting and production process.
Mann this dude is a legend… I was listening to Destiny’s Child Say My Name… the production was done years ago but it’s still just better than anything that’s out right now.
He was just doing a generic, corny version of what Timbaland was already doing for years. Aaliyah “Are You That Somebody” is an obvious example, but that herky, jerky, playing with time, stutter syncopation all originated with Timbaland and was part of his sound. Wannabes like Rodney Jerkins copied him because Timbaland only worked with in-house, family artists at the time, except for remixes. So people hired Rodney Jerkins to do the off-brand, generic version of the sound. That’s how you end up with “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name”, and hundreds of lesser known hits and rnb and hip hop songs around that time.

When two producers come up around the same time of course there is going to be similarities but different styles. You can make that same argument for The Neptunes and Timbaland. Darkchild is not a cheaper version of Timbaland. Plus, Darkchild produced for the Legendary Michael Jackson while he was alive, that’s nothing cheap about him.
@@AmbiguousAnthony I was there, bro. When Timbaland came out, no one was doing what he was doing. And while influential people are always going to change music and inspire a bunch of copy cats, there are always going to be those certain people who stick out as being massive biters. Rodney Jerkins is one of those cases.
Timbaland came out in ‘95-‘96 doing that stutter, weird time signature change thing with Aaliyah, then Ginuwine, then his own stuff with Magoo, then Missy, then family album with everyone involved. He was also dominating the pop charts and radio back then by also doing remixes with select artists and soundtrack work. I believe he even did a Destiny Child soundtrack song (he also remixed “say my name”, interestingly)? This was around the time of his song with SWV “Can We Get Kinky”, like ‘97 and ‘98.
Go listen to ANYTHING Rodney Jerkins produced during this time. It’s all very generic, very standard rnb production.
Flash forward to 1999. Destiny Child has some momentum and want to make a statement with their second album. Surprise, surprise … their dad and management (and probably the girls) want the hottest, most cutting edge sound out, which was Timbaland.
At that time, Timbaland was pretty protective of his sound and was judicious about producing other artists outside of his camp. Hence the occasional remix or soundtrack one off, but not a collection of songs for another artist.
So, in absence of being able to get Timbaland for a collection of album material, they got Rodney Jerkins to do a budget, watered version of the Timbaland sound. “Say My Name” is literally Aaliyah “Are You That Somebody” from two years before.
Of course, “Say My Name” and “Bills, Bills, Bills” are good pop songs, they just wreak of un-originality and explicitly rip-off the Timbaland sound, but done in a sterile way.
And, yes, I concede that pop music always looks for the trend to hop on. That’s not unusual. The difference is, at the time it was SO blatant because of the fact that Jerkins wasn’t ripping off a trend (although Timbaland was single-handedly dominating the billboard charts for multiple years at that point. The Neptunes didn’t hit their full stride until the late 90’s, early 2000’s) he was ripping off a single artist who had cultivated a sound; you could immediately trace it back to a single source. That was the big difference, and that was why it was notable at the time.
So, yeah, I am a hater, but I was hater way back then because it was so obvious what he was doing. He’s obviously a talented musician and producer, and those songs he made are good pop songs. But I have a higher standard. He could have probably created big hits by making his own sound and using his own ideas. Instead, he chose to lazy route of copying Timbaland and making off-brand, generic Timbaland beats. So that’s my beef in a nutshell, and that’s why I have forever associated Rodney Jerkins/Darkchild as scuffed, cheap, lazy imitation version of Timbaland.
Of course, Timbaland took it in stride and completely changed his sound like 5 more times in the next ten years following this, and that stutter beat thing became played out. But it still bugged me and other music heads at the time.
As to Michael Jackson … Michael Jackson always had his ear to the street and wanted the most cutting edge sound. That’s why he got Quincy to be his executive producer for Off The Wall, that’s why he got Rod Temperton to write all those songs for Thiller (there is an interview with Quincy and some of the musicians involved in the making of Thriller, I think Greg Phillinganes? … and they said Michael was obsessed with the Minneapolis sound Prince had created with his albums and groups like The Time, which featured Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who went on to create all those massive albums for Janet Jackson. While Thriller is a masterwork in its own right, the sound MJ actually wanted was the Minneapolis sound. Luckily, the Temperton and that unique collection of musicians Quincy put together created a timeless, unique masterpiece), that’s why he tapped Teddy Riley and the New Jack Swing sound for the Dangerous album, etc.
I promise you … I would out a LOT of money on it … Michael wanted the production team Justing Timberlake had for his debut. He wanted the Neptunes and Timbaland because that was the cutting edge at the time. Of course, those guys being cutting edge, didn’t want to work with MJ at the time because their sound would have been absorbed by the MJ phenomenon-thing. It would be MJ first, and most people wouldn’t care about the producer. When Pharrell or Timbaland did a project, it was always understood that it was a collaboration, and they got equal billing, and they were often on the song singing, rapping, and in the video. That wouldn’t fly with MJ.
Also, if I had to guess, they probably weren’t all that interested in making music with MJ at the time. He wasn’t making great music anymore, that was right in the middle of various scandals and rumors about his weird lifestyle, court cases, the child moleststijn rumors, etc.
So I remember at that time … MJ was kind of played out and stale. He was still considered to be legendary and was popular around the world, but in the US, he was not considered cutting edge or hip anymore. If anything, we saw him as kind of a freak show, maybe a little corny at best. So I’m guessing that’s why those big producers passed up the big money to work with MJ on anything beside a remix or something?
And in absence of getting the real thing, what did MJ’s team opt for? Rodney Jerkins. And the music came out just as stale and generic as you would expect.
Even worse, a lot of the songs on that album were literally just songs that were written and passed on by other artists, so they were just floating around … literally generic. People like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears and other pop stars had already passed on them. I think that was the story for “you are not alone” and “ butterflies” and a handful of other songs? They were literally passed on by other artists before MJ recorded them. So that should tell you where MJ was at that time. But knowing that info, Rodney Jerkins is the appropriate person to have produced those generic songs.
Meanwhile, if anyone thinks about that time period, or has a playlist from that time, it would be loaded with Timbland, Neptunes, Outkast, Jay-Z, etc. And the first two Justin Timberlake albums, or even Nelly Furtado’s Timbaland album, or even Timbo’s “Shock Value” … is probably what MJ would have been making if he was still a fertile and relevant creative artist.
I think that covers what I have to say on the topic.

U were right about a few things but got some stuff wrong.
Actually Michael Jackson PASSED on Neptunes beats. Facts. Its gonna blow your mind what im gonna tell you.
So MJ passed on “U Dont have to call” which then went to Usher. He passed on the beat that became “Rock Your Body” for Justin Timberlake. Facts.

Every melodic breezy song that the neptunes presented, Mike passed on. The neptunes were disappointed but kept it moving and those same beats became no.1 smashes.
Ok, so Say My Name. The girls wanted to work with Timbaland yes and they actually did. He did “Get on The Bus” for them for a soundtrack a year prior in 98.
I agree that Rodney def took bits and pieces from producers but dude is still a beast.

Ok, so “Say My Name.” The girls actually recorded to a completely different beat and didnt like it. They never asked any producer to sound like timbaland because Sony was more than willing to cut Timbo a check. Timbaland’s schedule was crazy at that time. As in months in advance. Hence why he remixed Say my Name for them.
Rodney was actually making his version of a UK sound that he had the girls record to.
They didnt like it but they tried to trust his vision.
At the last second, he realized the girls were right and the beat was just not working.
In one night, he created that entire Say My name beat from scratch with the girl’s acapella vocals added in.
The girls heard the song only when he was done.
Everyone knew it was a smash.
Yes those drum patterns borrowed heavily from timbaland as dude was the man and people def were biting his shit.
But the strings and everything else is all Darkchild. The fact that he was able to do all that and mix and master it in one night is truly impressive.

Some of your stuff was on point but Rodney was (1) Far from cheap lol. He had his business right and he was coming off the Brandy album in 98. So he was not a cheaper version of Timbaland. His prices were just as high.
Timbaland absolutely is a goat and opened up a completely different chamber than anybody in both hip-hop & R&B. And the man did it a few times.
Also I cant let u just say “Butterflies” by MJ was a passed over song by other artists. Just flat out not true.
Marsha Ambrosius wrote that song as a young girl and recorded it as a demo tape to get a deal. She was working with the Touch of Jazz camp and they played it for MJ. He LOVED it.
She didnt even kno they played it for him. They ask if MJ can have it and like any sane person, she said hell yeah lol.
So no it wasnt passed over numerous times. Simply not true.
V Collection plus Pigments is pretty much all you need. Plus beats. Arturia, are you going to create a new beat/groove plugin???
I would also add FX Collection as well. Arturia have done an excellent job on these software emulations of vintage gear.

Well I'm a Reason user, and have Analog Lab, with Mini V unlocked and honestly that's decades worth of sounds just with that. Even Analog Lab which comes with any of there hardware devices has thousands of excellent presets and can be edited significantly without owning the V Collection.

@@tonyrobbins2558 it depends on the instrument really. For example, the arturia’s Rhodes are far inferior to Keyscape - omnisphere. Some of Roland’s cloud instruments have more of a rich mid range to my ear, and for bass, Diva packs more of that analog type punch than arturia’s vsts. There’s almost always an alternative that sounds slightly thicker in the lower mids to me.
For getting ideas down though, analog lab is really handy, I agree on that.

As great of a legend producer Darkchild is, he really needs to get his health under control. I would hate for us to lose another legend due to health issues.

@thatdudereggie I think after that surgery, he kept on with his bad eating habits... eating, staying in the studio for hours, and then going to sleep. I don't think he works out or does any running. I think he just sits in that chair in that studio for hours

Rodney was my idol growing up.
SUPERB LIGHT TO MUSIC PRODUCTION.
Arturia lost me as a customer when they failed to offer reasonable upgrades on the V Collection. And I don't give rat's butt on who endorses them. The synth VST market is saturated. Cherry Audio, G-Force, etc., many are superior to Arturia. I own V Collection 8, and a Polybrute. But now for what they're offering in the upgrade, I'd practically have to pay the same as a new customer. They have no sense of customer loyalty. They will never get me back.

I have a Akai MPK249 for the DAW Reason there software devices, and a Arturia Keylab 49 for there software devices. I see them as rivals in terms of sound capabilities and quality both are excellent in My opinion.

Arturia Did It Again !
Pro Tools started in 1985 as Sound Designer by 1990 it was called Pro Tools and Rodney Jerkins began producing in 1994 so the timeline is slightly out, before Rodney was in studio's there were musicians who could play as he does and songs and albums would be cut in a day or two, it's easily verified too if you don't believe me just look at liner notes. And with a mixing board you recorded more than one track at a time so don't believe everything you hear, technology has enabled people to do great things but don't lie to make a point.
And yes I was recording in the 80's it was hip hop and I did go to professional studios such as Animal Farm in Central London UK, where Elton John used to record before someone says what do I know. A whole lot actually. Today technology is great but musicians cut songs in a heartbeat so it's not faster now, it can be more efficient due to the nature of the tools but if you are proficient in your instrument whether it's a guitar or a sampler you get the job done quickly cause you have skills for which there really is no substitute.
And it's not about speed or technology it's about great songs, and great performances, hence why you don't hear great music anymore, too much reliance of tech and not enough on great performances and songs.

Arturia layers how much you are allowed to use, if you've already invested in hardware like the minilab, and upgraded to Lab V Pro as well, you'll not be able to pitch bend more than two semitones, unless you shell out hundreds. Considering that their instruments have titles like 'bend me' and various other names, you won't be able to bend any of the instruments particularly usefully. It's an awful shame because whilst their marketing is awesome, unfortunately, their pricing structure appears obtuse.
I wish i lived in the US. The Australian music scene is basically non-existent. No opportunities to meet any decent artists you admire.

hey why don't you ask why Arturia doesn't like customers, I bought 2023-12-02 six days before the update on the X, I didn't get the new update, if I want to use the X I have to pay 199 euros again,. This company is a scam no matter how much hardware or software you buy beforehand, they don't give a damn about you. I contacted them, wrote for a long time, nothing worked, they wrote back buy the program again. Arturia screw you.
But it was a lot more fun recording the old way. :)

personal, I think it was too much TECNOLOGY that help to kill the music industry. along with very little recording artist talent.
Too bad it crashes my DAW since 2014.
