At the time of releasing this video, Rebels concluded almost exactly 5.5 years ago, because that is not an engaging video title, I rounded up to 6 years later
This is probably gonna be one of those videos people are watching for years to come anyway, the title will be obsolete almost as soon as it's accurate. Plus, I mean, you didn't specify exactly what point in the series was 6 years ago... so... *ahem* "what I told you was true, from a certain point of view"
You NEED to stop accepting the absolute worst, most obvious scams in human history as sponsors, pretending to like them for WAY too long and putting them in the middle of the video NOW. I'm tired of disliking and reporting good videos
I think that one of the greatest things about Kaanan's death is that the color returns to his eyes before he passes, implying that his vision returns for just a moment, enabling him to see hera one last time
Couldn't help but tear up during that scene. There was just so much to process all at once! And when his eyes cleared up, as the Force gave him the ability to see his love one last time, even for an instant....just.... goosebumps and glassy eyes.
I know this comment is late, but that was even foreshadowed at the start of the final arc of season 2. Before leaving for Malacor, Kanan tells Hera “We’ll see each other again. I promise.” It makes it an even more emotional scene.
I love Rebels as much as the next fan but you opened my eyes when you said that The Clone Wars shows us what NOT to do as a Jedi whereas Rebels shows us the right way 🙏
@fofonablus7104 How? Sorry that this will come off as aggressive, but while Gold tries to explain it, it's clearly to keep that crowd happy, as he contradicts himself at 23:28 admitting the Jedi are selfless. It can't be both. Things that happen between Ezra and Kanan such as a close master apprentice relationship and working through emotions are common place. Just because Obi wan struggled to doesn't mean it never happened. In CW, a hand full of people perceive the Jedi negatively at the start of an episode, the Jedi pretend to not have an answer, and they just never explain or conclude that issue. It's no deeper than Obi wan's random complaints about politicians. And this is a recurring problem in CW's "themes". Plus, it ignores other *canon* lore like the existence of the Med Corps, the Agri Corps, the Exploration Corps, and Edu Corps which the Jedi established to heal impoverished systems. As well as disregarding Lucas's intent -- and no, Lucas helping with CW doesn't justify a retcon. He changes his mind all the time, and usually for the worst-- disregarding Lucas's intent for the Jedi's purpose and existence. And interpretating the CW portrayal as corruption is a stretch (unless our definitions are different). Making the jedi slothy old men ends up adding nothing and teaching nothing, besides paying lip service to real world western criticism of specifically western religions, which the jedi are NOTHING like* .
Honestly yeah. I remember thinking that Ezra and Kanan embodied what the Jedi should’ve been. They both succeeded not because of how powerful they were with the force or as duelists. No, they lost on those fronts, and rightfully so. It was how deeply connected they were to the force and their emotions, Kanan’s love for Hera and the Ghost Crew and Ezra’s love for them along with Lothal is what saved the planet and defeated Thrawn. They respected the Force and it was their ally to the end.
@@othervids3726Ezra's and Kanan's closeness is good, and was common place among the Jedi. We only get glimpses and inferences in the movies bcoz Lucas had other priorities, but in works by those that loved *and understood* Lucas's story, we will see that they have connection with other Jedi. The Jedi Order was just as much a community as it was a disciplined way of life. (As a matter of fact, if we compare jedi to real religions as much as we do, we may as well be honest about the community aspect). To give only two examples, the bond between master and student or between peers -- the latter we see little of besides in CW (ironic, sense CW writers also reimagine the Jedi in some aspects for their own messages) --.
I grew up with The Clone Wars, but Rebels spoke to me in a much deeper way. And Kanan and Ezra's Master/Padawan relationship and bond is one of the strongest in all of Star Wars, I will never get over them.
To this day, it’s the tightest most emotional and focused story under Disney SW, I’m not surprised the events in Rebels are now guiding the future of the franchise as a whole (Thrawn’s return) I always laugh when someone says they tried rebels but only watched a few eps and thought it was a mid show, like bro, it’s THE SHOW.
Same. And as much as i can agree with most people about the tone being silly, at least it could pick a tone (I've seen shows that cant). Though I can mostly accept Ezra for who he is and he did grow, and Kanan choosing to move forward and accept he couldn't foresee or help what happened during the Purge. It was meaningful drama
@@ThreadBareHope1234I’m rewatching rebels now and on s3. I think it does take a lil while to get on its feet but it’s mainly bc it’s first season is more light hearted. I love how the show becomes progressively deeper and darker. Honestly some episodes are my favourite bits of sw content.
I've always loved Clone Wars more, and I think Rebels is really hit or miss, a lot more than TCW, but when there are some episodes of the show, especially towards the later seasons, that manage to capture the same genius as its predecessor, and sometimes even surpass it.
The Honorable Ones is probably the best episode of the series as a whole. It's amazing that little gem snuck its way into a mostly childish (albeit more mature in later seasons) series.
The show is so breathtaking on its heart and philosophy. Kanan is one of the best characters in all of Star Wars, and I love how this show portrays love in such a powerful way. Kanan fully represents a true Jedi in my eyes. And a character like this existing in this show showcases how amazing this show is.
Great retrospective. I fully understand why viewership numbers dropped off during the 1st season but sticking with the series was very much worth it. I love the story Filoni was able tell over the 4 seasons.
I recently rewatched this show in preparation for Ahsoka and honestly by the end of season 4 I got emotional, which doesn’t usually happen for me. These characters were so fleshed out, they really felt like a family and even though there’s a lot of filler, I still enjoyed mostly everything I watched. People need to really give Rebels a chance.
I completely agree that the Rebels finale is absolutely brilliant. The show has it’s issues. But Kanan and Ezra might be my two favorite Jedi. In all of Star Wars I would have never expected that they would kill off, and sacrifice the two biggest characters when season 1 ended. The fact we still don’t know where Ezra is, even after 6 years is just insane. And I’m so happy we’ll finally get answers in Ahsoka
@@Door227 I mean. Ahsoka was still around by the events of A New Hope. And there’s a big chance Cal Kestis is too (we’ll have to wait and see what his fate is in Star Wars: Jedi 3) As long as Kanan and Ezra didn’t intervene in the main continuity, they could have both been alive/around. So I really respect that they had the balls to do it. Since they didn’t need to.
I really like how the main cast of characters from Rebels have been firmly accepted by the fanbase and feel natural in the franchise. For instance Kanan is one of my favorite jedi and Hera is synonymous with the Rebel Alliance to me
Not gonna lie I'm one of those people that totally disregarded Rebels' first 2 seasons and ended up watching it with my very young son on whatever the Disney XD app was back in 2017 as a filler for not having a job at the time. Looking back, after having recently finished the show for the 2nd time, it was the most unique and amazing experience as someone who had yet to come into his own as a parent and as a person in general. Now, after this most recent re-watch, I do wholeheartedly believe that this is the show that renewed my love Star Wars (which had been thoroughly lacking as of the abrupt end of TCW), but also for life itself after being so disillusioned from who I was for so long. It's as if watching these people grow and evolve once more reminded me of how I myself have grown as a person, and I cannot thank Dave and the other creators enough for giving us this convoluted, controversial MASTERPIECE of a show. Gonna watch it with my now 10yo kiddo as soon as he gets up to speed on TCW now and I can't be more excited...
I never understood the hate for this show. I grew up on the movies, watched the clones wars, and then watched rebels when I was in high school. Love it all
I think a lot of it comes from the clone wars being cancelled. And since we've gotten the finale of clone wars since then many new fans have opened up about Rebels
I think the tonal shift from the end of the clone wars to the much younger/goofier S1 of rebels was too much for many and they didn’t stick it out. True for a half a dozen of my friends anyway. I was the only one who went back and watched the whole series and then badgered them to give it another try.
People dont like it because its bad. The empire is the most ridicolous ever (until Kenobi came around), even Thrawn is most of the time an incompetent buffon, there are zero stakes until the last episodes, the main characters are poorly written, 90% is filler and even the sequels have better worldbuilding. Together with the goofy lightsabers and humor, the censoring of deaths and the childish tone, its just not something many people enjoy.
I still lament Disney's mangling of the story of Thrawn (whose novels should have became the sequel series), but I think they got his character right, which more than anything I live because said character is so good.
As soon as Hera said, "If all you do is fight for your own life, then your life is worth nothing," I was hooked. I think this show has the power and courage to inspire others to strive to be more selfless and courageous. I love this show so deeply, it's hard to find the words, but you did an amazing job explaining the major story beats and how impactful each of them were to the story. P.S. I just subscribed cause why not? :)
Rebels is definitely a strange one for me. It's set for a younger audience so the good guys never lose. That hurts it slightly. It also has a mostly bad first season. At the same time, it's a linear show with an incredible story and characters that I love. I both like it more and less than Clone Wars.
I mostly agree. I think the plot, writing, and characters are more or less on the same level (however TCW S7 finale easily broke the "tie" for me) However the setting of the Clone Wars, animation / art style, and slightly older rating really made Rebels seem like a a CLEAR downgrade until the story really got going.
I would contest that the rebels always win. In season 2’s and 3’s finales the rebels lose, in some ways quite severely, and that’s half of the finales.
This is such an amazing analysis. I followed this show obsessively as it was airing, even if I was complaining about, like, half of it. (Ezra abandoning the dark side after 3 episodes in season 3 bothered me. Also, I felt Zeb completes his character arc in Legends of the Lasat and just spun his wheels for the rest of the show). But I'd actually never considered the idea that Yoda sent them to Malachor TO show Ezra the dangers of seeking conflict; to DETER him from trying to defeat the Sith. As a Middle Schooler, I just thought they dropped the ball on that plot point. But that makes sense. This was fantastic to watch and surprisingly nostalgic. I guess it's been a long time since I've seen Rebels.
I don't think Hera was torn because she never told Kanan that she loved him. I think she likely did and he knew that. What she was trying to tell him was that she was pregnant. Thanks for the video. I'm rewatching Rebels now and man, I forgot how good it is. Probably my favorite Star Wars we've ever gotten on a screen.
Yes but also just that fact that she lost the love of her life, they were made for each other, yet circumstance demanded they must part, and it just hurts so bad even to this day! 💔 This is my fav SW project after the OT and PT, Rebels is INCREDIBLE.
The production story of Rebels is far more inspiring to me than The Clone Wars. Disney gave Dave and the team way more restrictions, it had a smaller budget, it had to be catered to a younger audience, it had to fit the "Disney" brand. Dave and co. worked under those restrictions and produced art that stands the test of time. Bravo.
49:19 Commander Soto's death was powerful, but what I think enhanced his sacrifice was his officers. They chose to pilot a suicide ship because of their respect for their leader, and their common belief in freedom.
I think Rebels is a great "successor" to Cline Wars. This show has a few of my favourite characters and storylines, out of all of Star Wars. I've waited a long time for this Video. Thanks Gold Man, keep up the great work.
I just finished the clone wars and rebels for the first time and man they really bridge the gaps between the prequels and the originals and made me really appreciate the prequels a lot more. Phenomenal shows.
Rebels really grew on me during my 2nd viewing of the show. The characters and story are well-written and fun. I love the relationship Kanan and Ezra had. It hit me when Kanan said he didn't have any Jedi training left to teach Ezra but Ezra still wanted to be with Kanan to learn how to be a better person. The Ahsoka vs Vader fight was when I really got into the show
After watching the Ahsoka series, it makes me want to watch Star Wars Rebels. I mean, I’ve only seen clips of that show, and I do like the characters from Rebels in other Star Wars media like Disney Infinity and the Bad Batch, but if Rebels is deep as Clone Wars and Ahsoka, I should totally watch it. Heck, maybe I should also watch Resistance if I was wrong about that and Rebels. Also: Feloni, buddy, I get that you wanted to show that Ezra and Sabine can have moments that aren’t romantic, but um… showing a scene where Sabine gives Ezra a holographic image of his dead parents on his birthday, a scene where Ezra conversely comforts Sabine about her family issues, a scene where Ezra and Sabine look eye to eye before he sacrifices himself, two scenes where Ezra sends a holographic message to Sabine where he talks passionately to her, and a scene where Sabine touches Ezra’s face in a mural… doesn’t scream platonic. I’m sorry, but if you’re gonna show romantic scenes, you have to at-least admit it.
Rebels and TCW are my favorite parts in all of Star Wars I Grew up with Rebels in Middle School, It is the show that introduced me to Star Wars I remember when I was just starting middle school and I had no prior knowledge of Star wars and I just decided to watch Rebels for the first time and somehow it became my new favorite show despite knowing nothing about Star Wars after I finished rebels season one that's when I watch the rest of Star Wars, Rebels is How I got into Star Wars Itself that's why I might be my favorite SW show Besides TCW
Rebels is fantastic, a great show all around even season 1 being more “childish”. I think the legacy characters like Ashoka, Rex, Maul, Hondo, Obi-Wan and Yoda all serve a great purpose in helping the Ghost Crew. Rex also shows Kanan and Ezra how to be leaders and face fear/adversity. One of my favorite Rebels quote is from Rex when he’s talking to Ezra about Anakin and the Clone Wars, “a great Jedi once told me. The best leaders lead by example. You do that well.” The legacy characters all impart wisdom upon the Ghost Crew that helps them all grow throughout the show. Can’t say enough good things about Rebels.
Sheesh, didn’t think of that! But good point. And let’s remember, Ahsoka maybe didn’t lose (still debatable as we don’t know if she did or didn’t die before Ezra saved her) but Darth Vader taught not just Ezra, but also Kanan that some battles can’t be won
Rebels is such an amazing show, the villains, the main characters, the plot, the locations are top tier, on par with the Clone Wars, 9.8/10 for me (my 2nd favorite animated show, below Clone Wars)
You must have watched some other show because the Rebels I saw was ass. The villlains were incompetent idiots (yes, even Thrawn), the main characters with exception of Kanan are poorly written, the plot is 90% of the time to get supplies, the worldbuilding sucks and the locations are really repetetive. 3/10 max
After watching both shows and with rebels before clone wars Rebels is one of my favorites Ezra and kanan are my favorite master and apprentice pair in the whole franchise Also another thing I really loved about the finally is how ezra basically stands there exactly like kanan did in his sacrifice and it mirrored but with different outcomes and it was done beautifully so I also want to mention how strong ezra connection is to the live force able to bond well with a lot of living beings be it an adorable loth cat, the perguil at the finally or straight up controlling the storm trooper to kill his friends and then himself He might not be at the level of luke or yoda in his connection but I think he would become a force ghost when he dies
LOVED THIS VIDEO!! I grew up with Rebels, I was Ezra's age when it first Air and was his age when the show Finished. I Never understood the hate and how many people hated it using Nitpicks instead of apreciatting it as its own thing, and during the Pandemic when so many people started to give it a proper chance and say things like "I actually liked it" "I was too rough with Rebels", "I can see it actually good", etc. I didn't know if to be Happy or Mad hahaha It got so much unffair hate, with people pointing a lot of things that weren't that bad and things that were always there, like the Heart and Passion. And then almost everyone started to Love it and to apreciate Ezra's character too. Now I'm just happy, I love Rebels, I love Ezra and can't wait to see how much my boy has grown in Ahsoka 🫶✨
I appreciate how you covered the final duel between Maul and Kenobi. I still think that the video tribute done by Darth Porg titled “Hatred - Maul” is still the best summary of Maul’s life out of any summary and tribute videos.
I didn’t get to grow up with clone wars cause I wasn’t into Star Wars at the time. When I did become a fan, I just watched full episodes on RUclips as much as I could. Then Rebels came along and fully made me a Star Wars fan. Thank you for this video!
I would still have to say that the Clone Wars is my favorite Star Wars show out of them all, but Rebels still holds a special place in my heart because of how well done it was, as well as everything it's added to the canon and expanded upon.
I remember watching this for the first time as it came out. I really enjoyed it and never held the Clone Wars cancelation against it. I cried like a child when Kanin died. One of my favorite scenes with Hera was when she was chastising her father and her voice broke into her native accent. It really showed how emotional she was. I loved the character development everyone received. Even Agent Callis got development. I recently rewatched the whole series. Still enjoyed it
Your channel is one of if not my favorite Star Wars channels. Great video my man! I came to Rebels late, like 2020 during covid lockdowns. I ended up binge watching the entire series. I completely fell in love with the series and characters. Thanks for doing another video on one of my favorite shows.
4:55 people do harp on Rebels for being more childish at the start. While true, the 1st season did have its share of dark moments. In Episode 5, the Empire uses a partially decayed corpse as bait to lure in Jedi, that is shockingly messed up
I still like Clone Wars so much more, but I rewatched Rebels before Ahsoka and forgot how charming and fun it is! Ahsoka and Thrawn are my favorite Star Wars characters.
Once little tiny correction: I'm pretty sure that, in the aftermath of Kanan's death, when Hera says "I wish I told him sooner", I don't think she was referring to telling him she loved him. At least how I interpreted it, she wished she told Kanan she was *pregnant* sooner. Not only is it incredibly obvious that they both have feelings for eachother (especially during Season 4, but even far earlier than that), but I also swear I remember them saying "I love you" to eachother prior to Jedi Night. Because of that, I think its more likely Hera wanted to tell Kanan she was pregnant, which we as the viewer don't find out until the final scenes of the show.
I’m currently in the process of watching every bit of Star Wars media on Disney plus (In timeline order) and I’m currently on season 2 of Rebels so this video couldn’t of come out at a better time!
Just finished my 3rd rewatch of Rebels With my boo. This video was strangely right on time lol Kanan's death scene is easily the biggest punch to my heart than any other death in SW. I've cried for all 3 times i've watched it, and my gf was no exception. We we're balling. Any time I even watch "highlights" I get alittle choked up. Can't help it. Clone Wars season 7 is still some of my favorite Star Wars in recent years, but Rebels is a very close second. Thank you for the great vid once again!
I remember watching this series every time a new episode premiered on Disney XD. I kept up with it until the early parts of season 4 (I just never got around to finishing it). It was a pretty good show, I still prefer clone wars but this was a decent successor to it. I’m happy it’s finally getting a proper continuation.
I watched rebels earlier this year with my five-year-old daughter. It is the first and so far the only Star Wars show that she likes. Her birthday party was themed Star Wars rebels. I love this series and I love how Filoni was able to tie it to what came before and what comes after.
Everyone I ask is always like “Clone Wars is my favorite Star Wars show.” And some people don’t even know Star Wars Rebels exists, but it was my introduction to Star Wars. I am a huge Star Wars fan, because of Rebels. It will always be my favorite show. Thank you for making this wonderful video.
As frustrated as i was with the clone wars getting canceled, i still gave rebels a chance. And grew to love it. Funny enough a good friend of mine on the other hand, refused to watch rebels. Even after numerous chances of trying to convince him to give it a shot, he wouldn't budge. I then asked him, if clone wars wasn't canceled and finished its original run, would he have been open to give rebels a chance? He said yes. Years later clone wars came back, got its proper ending, and my friend started binging rebels immediately after.
@@wolfspiritrandom he liked it alot. He still gave some criticisms on being too kiddy at time, and lack of violence which i agree with. But after he finished the show, we had long discussions on the lore, references, connections, ect.... while playing gta online.
I’m really loving your videos, man you made a subscriber out of me. I was one of those people that when I heard about rebels, I saw the previews for it and thought it was just a little kid show and even thought that it probably doesn’t even tie into the main story. It’s just one story out there for kids. It’s the way I thought of it. I wasn’t upset that it was happening or anything like that. I just thought “oh cool they’re making a show for the kids.” Boy was I wrong. It’s currently 2024 and we have gotten a handful of live action. Star Wars shows that I’ve liked all for the most part some more than others but I’ll say this. Star Wars rebels turned into my favorite Star Wars TV series even above the live action stuff. And I absolutely love the clone wars, I am a huge fan of Andor. I think that’s the best live show and I love the Mandalorian Obi-Wan Kenobi, I liked, but there was a lot of stuff that I didn’t like but overall I liked it, but I really love Star Wars rentals to me. It’s the one that feels more like Star Wars than anything else.
I went from hating Rebels to loving it just in 1 season. At the time my family was falling apart and I was starting college. I felt so connected to Ezra finding this new family of Rebels. The show has so much heart. It’s such a wholesome show and I still rewatch it for the vibes. All the characters are good, it’s my favorite Star Wars content. Im so grateful we have Filoni making shows and movies now.
The crew become an adopted family to Ezra throughout the show. Kanan and Hera played the parents, Zeb the big brother, Sabine the little sister, and Chopper the household pet in a way if droids are like pets.
This was my childhood Star Wars show. I spent years watching these characters grow. And it still holds up all these years later and my love for it seems like it's finally coming full circle with Ahsoka.
Rebels was the first show I watched from (almost) the day it started to the day it ended. It is as well my favorite Star Wars show. Story telling, characters, voice acting performances, lore building and so much more works so well in this series. I just rewatched it this year and was quite surprised at how good the first season already was, as I don't remember liking it that much. And it just gets better from there on. All season finales in general are amazing. While Twillight Apprentice might be the best, because of the emotional baggage, Zero Hour is easily my favorite since Thrawn is my favorite character of all time and seing him wreck the rebel fleet was glorious. The battle of Atollon is definately underrated. I'm so happy to see the story finally continued in Ahsoka and am excited to see where this will lead us. Great video, basically agree with all of your points.
@@thegoldman25 It wasn't quite the first day for me either. I did watch the Pilot very soon after it came out, but then it took a while until I started to actually watch it regularly. I think it was only during season 2 that I started watching the episodes as they were released.
12:45 this reminds me of Epsilon’s goodbye speech at the end of Red vs Blue season 13. It’s about how he’ll never know if his sacrifice will be enough for his friends to make it out alive but he nonetheless has faith that they’ll see a happy ending
One thing you forgot to mention is that Sabine vs Gar Saxon ends with a mirror image of how Anakin vs Dooku ended with Sabine catching the Darksaber and almost killing Gar, Gar even tells Sabine to kill him just like how Palpatine told Anakin to Kill Dooku. The biggest difference is that while Anakin gave in and killed Dooku, Sabine sparred Gar only for her mother to kill him, kinda like that if Anakin didn’t kill Dooku then Palpatine was going to kill him himself
Wonderful tribute to the series. I was old enough to know what Clone Wars was, but I wasn't into Star Wars at the time. By the time I got into SW, I just had Rebels, and it was the critical part that kept me hooked on the fandom. The Ghost Crew holds a special place in my heart, as the group I grew up watching. So many great episodes, but I love that you gave some focus on the episode after Kanan's death. It really gives us time to process and grieve a character we've grown so close to, like no other death in SW. Also, glad you gave Artorr's vid a shoutout as well. You and him put out great SW content
I love Clone Wars; its defenitly my favourite piece of Star Wars media. But I adored and still adore Rebels and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Just today, i was telling a friend of mine about your amazing star wars (review) videos. what a nice surprise to see another one of these once more. keep doing what you're great at - and of course i'm a sub, only 92percent left;)
What a great show, people always need to compare it to The Clone Wars and I get that, but after seeing it it's impossible not to understand how different (in a good way) they are. I feel like the people who grew up watching Rebels have a much better understanding of the show and they will have a much more love for it as they grow older, the same that happened to us who grew up with TCW. It's so great to be able to watch someone dedicating an hour long video to praise a good (not perfect by any means) Star Wars show. Rebels is fun and in the last seasons, pretty emotional and I like it a lot. Great video as always man!
Always loved rebels :) Glad to see it getting so much love lately...even by people who at the time hated it because of the huge difference to the clone wars.
This show has really grown on me throughout the years, it really is a spiritual successor to the clone wars. While clone wars is my favorite Star Wars, this show really adds a lot to the canon.
I've spent my whole day watching your videos and you deserve so much more attention!! you put so much effort and quality into your videos and it’s very visible
I’m a huge Star Wars fan. Yoda is my preacher. The religion of it all just touches me so much and this video was very cathartic. I had a few aha moments with this so thank you very much. You have a real talent of articulation, and philosophy. You just get it.
Rebles will always be super special to me i was 9 when jt came out and grew up watching it with my family, it comferted me alot during covid and ive had a huge obsession with it sinse last summer its such a good shoe too and probably one of mt favourite star wars things there is
This really does bring light to why I think Rebels is the best star wars series. Everything that you said, I agreed with. The impact this series made on my life is something I will never forget. It's what what really kickstarted me into becoming a diehard star wars fan. Ezra is and always will be, my favourite star wars character ever just from his story and the impact he (and somewhat Kanan) made on the rest of the franchise.
I was one of those guys who thought Rebels looked like a crappy replacement for Clone Wars. It wasn't until after Ahsoka was announced that I went through the show. I'm glad I did, because despite the flaws the show's actually pretty good.
I love the combo of monster of the week episodes and the deeper plot moving episodes. The fruit episode was great. You can’t please everyone. And I laughed when Agent Kallus kicked the Stormtrooper. I hope they keep developing new projects. May the Meilooruns be with you. 🥭
Rebels was my introduction to Star Wars. I was never able to watch the Clone Wars, mostly because I was never watching Cartoon Network at the right time. Rebels is the whole reason that I fell in love with Star Wars.
I'm not for the intense sequels bashing , but most themes that those movies wanted to explore where covered better in Star Wars Rebel, for example Rey and Ezra are similar in concept but Ezra's found family make more sense than Rey's one, it help that they started the story with knowing how they wanted to continue it
At the time of releasing this video, Rebels concluded almost exactly 5.5 years ago, because that is not an engaging video title, I rounded up to 6 years later
This is probably gonna be one of those videos people are watching for years to come anyway, the title will be obsolete almost as soon as it's accurate.

I know this comment is late, but that was even foreshadowed at the start of the final arc of season 2. Before leaving for Malacor, Kanan tells Hera “We’ll see each other again. I promise.” It makes it an even more emotional scene.

The two shows work perfectly hand in hand, thanks for watching!
@fofonablus7104 How?
Sorry that this will come off as aggressive, but while Gold tries to explain it, it's clearly to keep that crowd happy, as he contradicts himself at 23:28 admitting the Jedi are selfless.
To give only two examples, the bond between master and student or between peers -- the latter we see little of besides in CW (ironic, sense CW writers also reimagine the Jedi in some aspects for their own messages) --.
ok you have good points, BUT WHY THE FUCK DID YOU INSULT GEORGE?! 🙅🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🫥🫥🫥🤬🤬😤
I grew up with The Clone Wars, but Rebels spoke to me in a much deeper way. And Kanan and Ezra's Master/Padawan relationship and bond is one of the strongest in all of Star Wars, I will never get over them.
Couldn’t agree more!
It's certainly up there!
I’m partial to Twighlight of The Apprentice and Trials of the Darksaber
The show is so breathtaking on its heart and philosophy. Kanan is one of the best characters in all of Star Wars, and I love how this show portrays love in such a powerful way. Kanan fully represents a true Jedi in my eyes. And a character like this existing in this show showcases how amazing this show is.
Couldn’t agree more!
Great retrospective. I fully understand why viewership numbers dropped off during the 1st season but sticking with the series was very much worth it. I love the story Filoni was able tell over the 4 seasons.
I totally agree!
I'm so glad people are finally seeing it for what it truly is.
I've watched season 4 like 6 times and it still makes me cry
@@thegoldman25 yea i have watched season 1, 1 time.
season 3-4 like 6 times. its rly good
I completely agree that the Rebels finale is absolutely brilliant. The show has it’s issues. But Kanan and Ezra might be my two favorite Jedi. In all of Star Wars
I would have never expected that they would kill off, and sacrifice the two biggest characters when season 1 ended.
The fact we still don’t know where Ezra is, even after 6 years is just insane. And I’m so happy we’ll finally get answers in Ahsoka
Im gonna get emotional the next time I see Ezra
They pull a sike on us and we don’t actually get that- I’m thinking of the worst possible outcome but it’ll happen.
I knew they’d have to get rid of kanan and Ezra since you had to get rid of the two Jedi before a new hope but it’s still sad
@@Door227 I mean. Ahsoka was still around by the events of A New Hope. And there’s a big chance Cal Kestis is too (we’ll have to wait and see what his fate is in Star Wars: Jedi 3)
As long as Kanan and Ezra didn’t intervene in the main continuity, they could have both been alive/around.

Watched rebels in elementary/middle school and I still didn’t like it that much as the series went on
@@GreenNinj4I disagree
The lack of mention of Thrawn's meeting with Hera is criminal. That scene is a perfect distillation of who Thrawn is. Absolutely wonderful.
I still lament Disney's mangling of the story of Thrawn (whose novels should have became the sequel series), but I think they got his character right, which more than anything I live because said character is so good.
Ikr? He barely even talked about Thrawn and that was the part of the video I was most excited to get to
It’s crazy to think that these characters we saw animated are now being portrayed in live-action!
it's surreal
Yeah and it’s phantom menace level acting all the characters feel like an emotionless monotone
@@ZayTh3Godhorrible take
@@kadegetslaid634 cool but I’m right bro the acting in the ahsoka series feels like an emotionless monotone
@Deity_devil you're really not right, we're two episodes in
As soon as Hera said, "If all you do is fight for your own life, then your life is worth nothing," I was hooked. I think this show has the power and courage to inspire others to strive to be more selfless and courageous. I love this show so deeply, it's hard to find the words, but you did an amazing job explaining the major story beats and how impactful each of them were to the story. P.S. I just subscribed cause why not? :)
Thank you!!!!
Vanessa Marshall who voiced her said that was one of her favorite lines.
Rebels is definitely a strange one for me.
It's set for a younger audience so the good guys never lose. That hurts it slightly. It also has a mostly bad first season. At the same time, it's a linear show with an incredible story and characters that I love. I both like it more and less than Clone Wars.
fair points!
I mostly agree. I think the plot, writing, and characters are more or less on the same level (however TCW S7 finale easily broke the "tie" for me)
However the setting of the Clone Wars, animation / art style, and slightly older rating really made Rebels seem like a a CLEAR downgrade until the story really got going.
I would contest that the rebels always win. In season 2’s and 3’s finales the rebels lose, in some ways quite severely, and that’s half of the finales.
The goodies always win in Star Wars, even when they lose.
It makes perfect sense! Thanks for watching and I’m glad I was able to change your mind about that
i know it isn’t your usual thing, but i would LOVE to see your take on this show. your videos are incredible
This is my fav SW project after the OT and PT, Rebels is INCREDIBLE.
Bravo.
Great point!
Except season 1, I still just can't grow to like it
fair point. Until Grand Inquisitor rolled up Season 1 was quite bad..
49:19 Commander Soto's death was powerful, but what I think enhanced his sacrifice was his officers. They chose to pilot a suicide ship because of their respect for their leader, and their common belief in freedom.
That's a fantastic point, I love that moment too
I think Rebels is a great "successor" to Cline Wars. This show has a few of my favourite characters and storylines, out of all of Star Wars. I've waited a long time for this Video. Thanks Gold Man, keep up the great work.
Enjoy! Thanks for the kind words
The McQuarrie influence makes the show feel like SW adjacent in the best way. Different to the OT but sharing a common ancestor
very true
@@thegoldman25 while I think the inspiration is cool I don't really like the thin lightsabers. I love the tribute though!!
The Ahsoka vs Vader fight was when I really got into the show
I think a show like rebels is much better to watch when you binge it instead of week to week
Star Wars animation certainly holds a special place in a lot of peoples hearts, thanks for watching!
Rebels was also what got me into star wars so relatable I guess.
Wonderful point! I wish I added that into my video
To an extent even vader taught ezra something that there are some battles he can't win
It's such an amazing show, thanks for watching!
3/10 max
@@GreenNinj4thank the lord someone sees sense 😂
After watching both shows and with rebels before clone wars
Rebels is one of my favorites Ezra and kanan are my favorite master and apprentice pair in the whole franchise
Also another thing I really loved about the finally is how ezra basically stands there exactly like kanan did in his sacrifice and it mirrored but with different outcomes and it was done beautifully so
I also want to mention how strong ezra connection is to the live force able to bond well with a lot of living beings be it an adorable loth cat, the perguil at the finally or straight up controlling the storm trooper to kill his friends and then himself
He might not be at the level of luke or yoda in his connection but I think he would become a force ghost when he dies
What great timing as I had just finished watching your old videos on Why Kanan is a great Jedi & The importance of Ezra's sacrifice.
Also I only finished watching Star Wars Rebels S3 & S4 recently for the first time. I watched S1 & S2 as it premiered.
Welcome back!
I didn't know if to be Happy or Mad hahaha
It got so much unffair hate, with people pointing a lot of things that weren't that bad and things that were always there, like the Heart and Passion. And then almost everyone started to Love it and to apreciate Ezra's character too. Now I'm just happy, I love Rebels, I love Ezra and can't wait to see how much my boy has grown in Ahsoka 🫶✨
Thank you so much for watching! I love this show too!
I appreciate how you covered the final duel between Maul and Kenobi. I still think that the video tribute done by Darth Porg titled “Hatred - Maul” is still the best summary of Maul’s life out of any summary and tribute videos.
I need to check it out
It’s a shame the episode was ruined by space aladdin running about with chopper
Loved the 1st season simply because Greg Weisman wrote it. He's such a good writer
didn't know that! the 1st season is still my least favorite but I enjoy it
I didn’t get to grow up with clone wars cause I wasn’t into Star Wars at the time. When I did become a fan, I just watched full episodes on RUclips as much as I could. Then Rebels came along and fully made me a Star Wars fan. Thank you for this video!
I watched rebels with zero expectations but this show suprised me sooo hard
I hope in a good way!
I would still have to say that the Clone Wars is my favorite Star Wars show out of them all, but Rebels still holds a special place in my heart because of how well done it was, as well as everything it's added to the canon and expanded upon.
This series and The Clone Wars will always have a special place in my heart
Same here!

Thank you for the kind words!
4:55 people do harp on Rebels for being more childish at the start. While true, the 1st season did have its share of dark moments.
In Episode 5, the Empire uses a partially decayed corpse as bait to lure in Jedi, that is shockingly messed up
great point!
I still like Clone Wars so much more, but I rewatched Rebels before Ahsoka and forgot how charming and fun it is! Ahsoka and Thrawn are my favorite Star Wars characters.
great revisit… i didn’t get to Rebels until late in the game & binged the entire thing. well worth it… keep up bringing us awesome content bro
Will do! Thanks for watching!
59:33 Oh that was so smooth!
The symmetry was evident!

Thank you for watching!
I remember watching this series every time a new episode premiered on Disney XD. I kept up with it until the early parts of season 4 (I just never got around to finishing it). It was a pretty good show, I still prefer clone wars but this was a decent successor to it. I’m happy it’s finally getting a proper continuation.
ah good ole disney XD
In my opinion this is the best show in whole Star wars universe. I just love it.
I watched rebels earlier this year with my five-year-old daughter. It is the first and so far the only Star Wars show that she likes. Her birthday party was themed Star Wars rebels. I love this series and I love how Filoni was able to tie it to what came before and what comes after.
This made me smile, thank you for sharing!
What did he think of Rebels?
I just thought “oh cool they’re making a show for the kids.”
Boy was I wrong. It’s the one that feels more like Star Wars than anything else.
bro you dropped this at the perfect time
The timing was certainly intentional
I went from hating Rebels to loving it just in 1 season. At the time my family was falling apart and I was starting college. I felt so connected to Ezra finding this new family of Rebels. The show has so much heart. It’s such a wholesome show and I still rewatch it for the vibes.
All the characters are good, it’s my favorite Star Wars content. Im so grateful we have Filoni making shows and movies now.
Honestly the episode where chopper meets AP-5 is one of my favorites.
It's amazing
I realized that kanans death is the only moment in star wars i've ever had tears brought to my eyes
The crew become an adopted family to Ezra throughout the show. Kanan and Hera played the parents, Zeb the big brother, Sabine the little sister, and Chopper the household pet in a way if droids are like pets.
Sabine is older than Ezra btw

Thanks! Will do!

@@thegoldman25 It wasn't quite the first day for me either. I did watch the Pilot very soon after it came out, but then it took a while until I started to actually watch it regularly. I think it was only during season 2 that I started watching the episodes as they were released.
Yes! I love rebels, and everyone considers at a kids show, but it is so good at the end.
it is a kids show and it is really good, both can be true!

Always loved rebels :) Glad to see it getting so much love lately...even by people who at the time hated it because of the huge difference to the clone wars.

i remember growing up with rebels, probably the first star wars show i ever watched and i love it for that
The show is actually not bery good. Its okay, but its a very flat, Empty show.
This was my childhood i love it!
This show ended when I was 19, does that still classify as my childhood?
I’m a huge Star Wars fan. Yoda is my preacher. The religion of it all just touches me so much and this video was very cathartic. I had a few aha moments with this so thank you very much. You have a real talent of articulation, and philosophy. You just get it.
I appreciate that, thank you!
Those who haven't watched Rebels show definitely give it a try, in order to understand the best Jedi, Kanna.
they should
Rebles will always be super special to me i was 9 when jt came out and grew up watching it with my family, it comferted me alot during covid and ive had a huge obsession with it sinse last summer its such a good shoe too and probably one of mt favourite star wars things there is
Theses guys are craftsman.
thanks!
1:01:29 Bro you’re making me cry even more than the show’s finale did 😭😭
That’s the power of Star Wars Rebels!
This really does bring light to why I think Rebels is the best star wars series. Everything that you said, I agreed with. The impact this series made on my life is something I will never forget. It's what what really kickstarted me into becoming a diehard star wars fan. Ezra is and always will be, my favourite star wars character ever just from his story and the impact he (and somewhat Kanan) made on the rest of the franchise.
i love reading comments like this, thanks for watching!
Happy to see another AP5 fan! I hope we see him again
I was one of those guys who thought Rebels looked like a crappy replacement for Clone Wars. It wasn't until after Ahsoka was announced that I went through the show. I'm glad I did, because despite the flaws the show's actually pretty good.
Your video had me in tears.
Thank you!!!
Darth Maul is so important of a character because of Dave Filoni that he’s the only reason I got people to watch rebels
nah, Ahsoka, Vader, Thrawn were bigger draws imo
@@thegoldman25 they definitely are but they just wanted more maul
I love the combo of monster of the week episodes and the deeper plot moving episodes. The fruit episode was great. You can’t please everyone. And I laughed when Agent Kallus kicked the Stormtrooper. I hope they keep developing new projects. May the Meilooruns be with you. 🥭
this is amazing
No you are amazing
@@thegoldman25 no you are amazing

Rebels was my introduction to Star Wars. I was never able to watch the Clone Wars, mostly because I was never watching Cartoon Network at the right time. Rebels is the whole reason that I fell in love with Star Wars.
The gold man even tho I think u need some work as a critique but I’d love to see u look back on the original trilogy
what do you think I could work on? I'm always looking for ways to improve
@@thegoldman25talking about the cons instead of ignoring them
I watched every SW anime episode & series during the lockdown & absolutely love all of them. They all have hidden gems within them more are needed
I'm not for the intense sequels bashing , but most themes that those movies wanted to explore where covered better in Star Wars Rebel, for example Rey and Ezra are similar in concept but Ezra's found family make more sense than Rey's one, it help that they started the story with knowing how they wanted to continue it
I might have to agree, and thats coming from a sequel fan
One of my favourite star wars projects. How it handles the force etc is Just beautiful
Finally some love for the show I grew up with! This show is peak star wars in my eyes.
Agreed!
Braindead
This was actually my first exposure to Star Wars while watching with my younger cousin. I loved it enough to check out the movies.
