As a someone who has to take the subway to work everyday ive learn to do 2 things 1. Avoid eye contact with anyone 2. Keep my headphones on at all times even if im not listening to anything cause someone WILL try to start talking to you
3. Don’t fall asleep. Still remember the video of that dude of the subway who randomly decapitated the sleeping guy sitting next to him 😅 When they found him they found that he cut bro stomach open, took his heart out and had started eating it…

Take Uber and Lyft as often as possibly. Mind your business and selectively engage with individuals outside and on the subway. It’s worth the visit. You will be fine. Oh and they don’t care that much about your iPhone15. Government programs give phones away for free here. Just don’t be flashy and hold on to your phone tightly. Put your phone away when you’re not actively using it.

I've been riding the rails in NYC for over 40 years. What I've learned is, when a situation like this happens, you stand up immediately after making eye contact the first time, and move to a different seat or train car. 99.99% of the time, you will find they just continue talking to the empty seat you just left. That other 0.01%? You end up on the 5 o'clock news.

Even had a guy get on the train once covered in blood & everyone (myself included) had to "pretend" we didn't see it until we/he got off. That's not even scratching the surface. I would NEVER advise anyone to move here. Plus it's getting expensive. It's not work it. I been everywhere too, nothing is worth seeing anymore. Can't wait to move and never looking back.

Affordable housing (for people w/ moderate income) is different from public housing. That's why most of the people leaving the city are working class. There is a fair amount of public housing though (for the poorest people). B/c of the mental health crisis with people on the streets, it's hard to get them to go into housing.
