    Nice to see another Proxxon user. I advise anyone who doesn't have a rotary tool like a Dremel to buy Proxxon. If you already have a Dremel, throw it away and buy a Proxxon tool. They have an actual speed control that maintains the speed under load so you don't have to max it out to grind anything tougher than cardboard. Plus the rotor has many more poles and this makes it a lot quieter. You can turn it right up to 20,000 rpm without needing ear muffs.

    Thank you very much for producing this series. I recently bought the same cutter grinder and when I went to order extra adapter hubs for it is was told $70.00 CAD ($55.46 US) each. I checked the SHARS website in the US and they want $29.95 US ($37.79 CAD) which is a lot better deal until you include delivery, customs and taxes. On the SARS site though is a blueprint with all the pertinent dimensions on it for the adapter so it will be a piece of round stock from the metal supply and some time on my part.

    whoa whoa whoa.. mini 3 jaw chuck? You think you can just flash that up on the screen without talking about it? Or did I miss that video? That looks right handy. Nice work on the adapters, can never have enough of those. Only thing I don't like is they wouldn't fit my grinder. :)

      You dont have a baby 3 jaw chuck? Just put two three jaw chucks in a drawer and leave them alone for some time...magic will happen :D

    Nice! I just bought a couple wheel adapters for my Brown & Sharpe surface grinder and the best price I could find for new high quality ones (Sopko) was $50.00 USD each plus $8.00 freight. I will be looking more closely at what you have done here and possibly making some...

    Excellent project Stefan. Great workmanship once again. Your "close enough for me" would put many a machinist to shame. Its nice to have enough tool holders or grinding wheel holders so there is no need to keep swapping things around. Many thanks for sharing. regards from the UK

      True words about having enough toolholders for the lathe ;)
      I plan to build even more, I still swap them around from time to time...but for the grinder I am pretty good setup now, as it seems.

    You do beautiful work! I am in awe, and jealous.
    I'm wondering if adapters could be used on a bench grinder. It would be really nice to switch stones, or a wire wheels, without the whole un-bolt, re-bolt, re-true thing.

    Awesome video, interesting seeing the motor bog down like that. After seeing your lathe improvement video, I copied your topslide mounting system and the difference in rigidity was mind blowing...unfortunately now I'm limited by the 550w motor running out of power instead of the chatter and zero rigidity :(

      Until yesterday I never used them. And I can tell you, they are awesome :D
      Used them to cut some HSS blanks down to size and they cut waaaaaay faster than a thin cuttoff wheel in a anglegrinder...

    Stefan, get the Proxxon IB/E or IBS/E, or the LB/E LBS/E., same precision but _more power_.
    The long version might be more useful as a toolpost grinder, and maybe even support higher side loads as the bearings should be further apart. Side loads are pretty much my only gripe with the IB/E, unlkie the Dremel it has a separate motor so the spindle bearings are very close together. The Proxxon is still far superior despite that of course, not so loud and the tools cut by rotation rather than vibration.

      Its already build, nothing spectacular there. Just a board with some pegs, where the wheels with the adaptors go on.

    I see you stock only diamond superabrasive wheels. I would have tho8ught your have ar least on CBN (cubic boron nitride) cup wheel for detailing HSS cutters and hard steel were wheel wear and loss of dress was a factor.
    I was taught (back when dinosaurs walked the Earth) that grinding with diamond diamond in iron alloys were uneconomical. The explananation was carbon's soluability in iron at grinding flash temperatures. My experience in grinding hardened lathe beds etc bore this out. A CBN wheel outlasted diamond grinding the ways of a 500 mm swing Okuma lathe bed 2. meters long by 3 to 4 times.
    Nice work on the wheel hubs, by the way. Very systeatic and well explained. I used to despair getting through to my apprentices the economies of time and accuracy to be gained by batching parts operation by operation compared to completing one at a time; especially where good references could be established to clamp to stops, recesses, pots. or mandrels.

      I think I am a bit to cheap for the CBN wheels - I know and have seen their benefits, but man, they are expensive..and nowadays most of my tooling is carbide anyway :)

    Very well done Stefan. They look good and the effort is well worth it. Question, but mostly on the diamond wheels....when you mount them on the surface or tool grinder will you need to mark the rotational orientation of the wheel to the spindle each time you remount them? Or, are the adapters true enough to ignore this possible factor?

    Thanks for the awesome series! I have a Boyar-Schultz 6x12 Deluxe, and have been looking for additional adapters for the better part of a year. It'll be a fair amount of work, but think I'll just follow your lead and make them. Any interest/concern in balancing the ones you made? Thanks again!

    Is wheel balance a big issue on grinding wheels of your size? The surface grinders we have at work all have moveable weights on the arbor for those hefty 12 inch wheels.. That made me wonder as I was watching the videos of yours

    Stefan - great work as usual. I really like the end result! What sized grinding wheels does your surface grinder take? Also, what is the diameter of the spindle at the major side of the taper?
    I'm currently building a small surface grinder and I'm at the point where I need to build the spindle, but need to decide on the size first...

      The toolgrinder takes 100mm wheels, the surface grinder takes 125mm wheels. The large end of the taper is about 13mm in diameter if I remember correctly.

      No, I have a window and a dehumidifier - If I need to change the air in the shop faster, I set a fan in the open window ;)

    So it appears that you just did random clean up passes on the OD of the arbors? If that is the case did you then mic them all and size match them to their closest pairs? :-)

      Kinda...I have a cordless drill and an adaptor that goes on the crank of the compound, but those short tapes where turned entirely by hand.

    I was watching this one again..... I noticed how clean everything in on the shaper, meaning, the dove tails ways. what type of lubricant do you use for it? I will assume that you simply clean the heck out of it after each use, right?

      +Dru Bradley I use a 68ish way oil and yes, my machines get cleaned after each use :)

    Hi Stefan
    Another great video. :-) I have a couple of questions for you.
    Why did you use the triangular file instead of a half round file when cleaning up the silver solder around the key on the inside of the washer bore?
    Why did you use a cut off wheel on the "dremel" instead of a wire brush? A wire brush can remove burrs and leave a nicer deburred finish than a cut off wheel.

      As for your questions:
      - Because i could not get into a sharp corner with the triangular file - For the round sections I used a halfround file.
      - The wire wheel only removes a very minimal amount of material - With the cutoff wheel I was able to create a proper chamfer

    Just a question regarding the taper bore setup : If the dial indicator is not on the exact centerline of the bore will it still indicate the true angle of the bore?

      Right, if the tip is off center the measured taper will get steeper than the real taper...its not supercritical, but you have to keep an eye on it. I just eyeball the tip of the DTI against a dead center in the tailstock to get it to height.

      Free cutting mild steel - 9SMn28k, ISO 1.0715 or SAE 1215

    Perhaps you can renew an active ingredient of the bluing compound. I doctor up my rust cleaning solutions with muriatic acid.

    Would it not have saved some time to stack all the washers in your setup in the shaper, and cut all of the keyways at once?

    Gotta love those knipex pliers, I bought a set myself about a year ago and am so happy I did! Quite expensive but totally worth it. I got a pair of parallel jaw pliers, I can definately recommend buying those:

    Hallo Stefan, eine Frage zu den Spannmuttern: warum bohren Sie stirnseitig 4 Bohrungen für das Spannen? Der chinesische Spannschlüssel hat doch nur 2 Stifte. Wäre das nicht ausreichend?

      Das hat wirklich keinen speziellen Grund - Das gibt einfach eine Möglichkeit mehr, den Schlüssel anzusetzen.

    I broke one of my Proxxon micromot collet nuts in half. I don't know why nobody make a Dremel or small die grinder with ER11 or ER8

      I know someone who got an RC motor with an 8mm bore and shoved one of those 8mm straight shank ER16 chucks up it. He uses it as a milling spindle but it's small enough to hand hold.

      MattOGormanSmith Yeah, after breaking the micromot collet nut I replaced the spindle with an ER11 and a brushless motor. Also some time later I made a high speed spindle that can be mounted on my mill spindle: s25.postimg.org/e0fijr5lb/IMG_20160502_193044.jpg

    Two great videos. Since I have the same tool grinder and just got a small surface grinder I will have to try making similar adapters. You might consider adding a larger diameter nut with tapped holes near the outer edge as shown in: ruclips.net/video/VIUeZoGn-gU/видео.html to balance the wheel assemblies.
    I also liked the balancing stand shown in this video and have just finished building one.

      But I want also to try the balancing method that was shown in one of the suburban tool videos, where they just removed material from the grinding wheel with a drill...

    Stefan, you made yourself a lot of hard work by hard soldering the keys in. You could have used soft solder or even Loctite, you only needed the keys not to fall out when you removed the washer to change the wheel.

    Next time you need to use micrometer blue to check fits, DO NOT use your fingers to apply it, not only are you using too much, but you get your hands in a mess.Apply the barest minimum using a cotton bud, works great and no messy blue fingers.

      Yeah ... thats the way WE pronounce it ... :-) . KNIPEX is an old pliers and tool manufactur who was founded in 1882 (about 20 mls. from were I live) and they still in the market with their reliable products. And the most important thing: They produce exclusively HERE (in Germany) since they start their company.
      Your fingers will say "thank you" when you use pliers from them ......
