Can't argue with you on that one. It's one of my most favorite solos that Mike ever played, the pacing and the intensity that builds...it's off the charts. at one point, even Eddie Gomez kind of laughs like "wow". Mike was totally in the zone once he got rolling. Some real interesting chromatic tones and note choices in there.
Michael. Brecker's solo is astonishing, and can be listened to repeatedly without it ever becoming boring. His performance is breathtaking and endlessly innovative - a constant source of inspiration.
Have you heard his tune "Time is of the Essence " ? Few sax players inspire my flute playing. Another great album he did "Now you See It, Now you don't" is worth a listen also. Let me know what ou think.
I saw Steps in San Antonio 1983 when I was a senior in H.S. and about to leave to University of North Texas. I had been a Brecker fan for a couple years already and followed him until his death. This period in his playing was the most technically proficient time ever in his evolution as a musician. That night I recorded Steps and when they played this song (Pools) Brecker's solo was so perfect and climactic I listened to that tape until it wore out. The solo was longer than this one and started much like this one, but the final choruses that he played were just from another world! I have never heard a better solo in my life! That grey Members Only jacket must have been his fav because he wore it that night and he wore it when I went to his lecture at UNT and it's in this video too! Lol. I think he was playing on a Dukoff mouthpiece and I really liked the way it sounded, but he changed to Guardala mouthpiece later and his sound got rougher IMHO. I'm not sure I'm accurate with the mouthpieces though
I watched this many times before and decided to check it out again. Mainieri's solo blew me out of the water again and then I remembered that Brekker's solo was still coming... Peter Erskin thundering away... Brekker's 'coming to America quote' in his solo at 8:59 ... Im in frikken tears!! Too much . . . . . too much... so good
I've had the opportunity to be part of several Eddie Gomez clinics during my time at UT-Arlington. Not only is his playing still phenomenal to this day, but he is also the nicest guy.
@@jazzx251 Yeah, they was married till 1990, they have a daughter, singer too, and very recognized, she is Amanda Brecker. currently and from many years ago, Eliane is in a relationship with the great bass player Marc Johnson.
Brecker's Steps Ahead era was my favorite. His playing is more melodical and soulful than much of his other work, but still had all the chops. Such an incredible player. Killer tone. Lucky enough to see him live several times and attend one of his clinics.
Que des stars sur leurs instruments dans cette formation qui concurrençait admirablement Weather Report . Totalement passée inaperçue en France , ce qui ne surprendra personne .

I'm not a sax player - but this live performance just shows who he was, and his impact on music. So many sax players are now being labelled, unjustly in 20% of cases, as "Brecker clones". That's the impact he had. He was the James Bond of saxophone - sax players wanted to be like him, and other musicians wanted to be with him.
I was trying to figure out why the very beginning sounds so familiar, and I just figured it out, think Squarepusher sampled it on one of his earlier songs. It's no wonder so many people say they were influenced by this one, it's perfect.
One of the best solos ever in the entire history of saxophone.
Brecker absolutely kills the tenor sax on this tune.
I've said this for years. It should be studied. Especially the second one beginning at 7:04.

Totally agree. Man alive!
and vibrafone
I like the deeply A E S T E T H I C C location and background mixed with the wonderful music they play.
Undeniably one of the greatest jazz groups of our time
Best version of Pools that I've yet heard! Love Gomez's crunchy bass sound too. Great solos all round.
I'd be hard pressed to think of a stronger version, during the tenor solo the whole thing goes into orbit!
I've often wondered who that excellent Bass player was. I believe he also played with Stan Kenton.
Eddie's playing is pure heaven.

Why did he have to go so soon ?
He is beyond human
One of his most beautiful solos. And the guy has A LOT.
Imagine if jazz concerts surrounded by nature became a trend. Real instruments, real musicians, just enjoying nature and good music. ❤️😎🙏🎹
Check out DOMI and JD BECK
Gomez is a Bad Ass. He sounds SO GOOD.
Don grolnick was very talented composer. His tracks are always very good.

1NMSYS what a story! Thanks for sharing it! Amazing
The best Steps Ahead in history and its best composition. Those concerts in the eighties were so good. How we enjoy. Jazz Legends
This is my absolutely favorite song of Steps Ahead 😍😍😍
It's no "song" though.
Sweet bass lines by Eddie G!
you can't miss that eddie gomez sound from a mile away
Absolutely. He's a monster.
like a bee in a jar😄

They generate so much energy. Yet they sound smooth as glass.
One of the greatest jazz groups of our times. I was 20 years old when i
1st heard this and fell in love with it way back in 1982.
What can we say about these artists ? No limits; absolute freedom. In one word HAPINESS
Thank you !
Yves
I'm not even a jazz musician, but I enjoy it quite a bit. This could be the most insane performance I've ever heard.
Enjoy quite a bit was an understatement, this is one of my favorite live performances ever. HOLY FUCK
This is one of the most vaporwave looking places ever
All the solos on this album and particularly on this track must be recorded at the jazz hall of fame. This level of intensity is a must 💣❤🔥💣❤🔥💣❤.
Classic line-up, with Eliane Elias.
Yes. She arrived in New York as an unknown and went straight to the top of the jazz world.
I just fell in love with her ;-)
Mike's sis in law
@@miguelorellano360 Did Randy marry her? (can't blame him - I've a thing for superb female piano players as well)
@@jazzx251 Yeah, they was married till 1990, they have a daughter, singer too, and very recognized, she is Amanda Brecker.

Gods play.. Love it
The song does absolutely timeless and genius
Amazing performance! Brecker shredded his 🎷 into pieces!! Left us too early!! RIP!!

Really love the bass!
Such a treat to listen to after so many years! Never heard this live version, but man how I love it! Thank you for sharing!!
One of the best tunes ever...Rip Don Grolnick.
One of the great jazz compositions.
Yep, you're right - Don Grolnick was certainly one of the best.
Magnifiqe jazz
Sooo fucking good! Man oh man, what a killer solo by Brecker. Damn!
It's like a bunch of 80's school teachers got together and made the best music ever.
I love the album a lot
This is some of the best jazz. I love the other version where they're playing this same song at an outdoor fest.
What a band! Michael flies high here!
Watching this live takes this song to another intellectual level - Brilliant!
Don Gronick's music is so cool! Check out Don's solo work.
Amazing. And I really dig Mainieri´s Quaker Oats mallet bin detail :-)
Magnifique
Ils sont tous excellents
Love this so much
Just amazing how they sound good live👍🏼👍🏼

Dall'inizio alla fine, assemblaggio perfetto tra melodia ed armonia, l'intro poi con l'inizio di Breker è veramente da fuoriclasse
Wooh! this is just... ENORM0US!
òtimo video - o melhor arranjo que ja ouvi. O Brecker é foda no saxx.
9:38 that little wink, "got that on cam, got ya ?"
Absolutely right.
and then 9:55 high sustained note anticipates key change !
Best Step
It just makes me cry.

Masterpiece.
9:56. Chills.
Wonderful music in a wonderful scenery!!!!
What a band OMG!
miguelito gracias por tanta musica viviras en mi por siempre
Erskine is a genius. His way of making the rhythm "roll" is worth a thousand hyper technical drummers who in the end sound all the same.
Man they where just great
And they all still had hair !!! Eliane's physical beauty is in harmony with her talent and her musical genious.
Great stuff.. Takes me back💝💝💝
Maravilloso! Magnífica agrupación llena de talento!
Such great hair!
Eddie Gomez knew Michael Brecker was on fire during that solo
Stellar jamm! thanks so much for sharing hope you are well God loves you deeply Shalom 🎸 🔊🏞️⛰️🏔️🎊🎉✨🎇🎆🎈🐕🕊️🌷✝️❤️
My favorite also! MB I miss you!!
Eddie gomez 🙏🏼
Great band 👍👍🇨🇭
Wow...first listen..that is mofo kickass daddy oh..🙏
Wow!! 😊
❤❤❤❤❤
Yes...!
Both of Brecker's solos are like, the best live solos possible, wtf
Super
Amazing, shout out to Domi & JD Beck 🙌
Heck yeah.
I know the vid you mean, too.
Is there a version by them also, or what do you mean?
@@paavomalinen7882 they did a stage set up similar to pay tribute to the legend. Cool musical references to it as well.
Definitely one of my favourite songs. Thanks for uploading this.
That look that Eliane Elias gives to Michael Brecker at 6:46... I fall in love every single time
And then he starts his solo and I all of a sudden fall in love with him
Maybe she's looking at Mike Manieri but I like to think she's looking at the sax player lol
At the Danish arts museum. Sometimes referred to as just "Glyptoteket"
マイケル・ブレッカーもそうですが、エディ・ゴメスとマイク・マイニエリのソロが素晴らしすぎます!
Mike Minieri fantastico
This is jazz.
Merci pour ce vidéo
Musicos de altissima qualidade.
off the charts. pun intended.
Great peter...
Fam this shit is so goooooood
Mike Mainieri OMG SOLO SPEAKS TO ME
A must read book on Brecker, Ode To a Tenor Titan. I couldn’t put it down.
Brecker was a God!
This band always gives me such an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia, which is strange as im a 90's kid from Australia. Anyone have any answers why?
La caña, que bueno.....!!!
Michael è irraggiungibile sembra provenire da un altro pianeta
That sparse drumming is so articulate
OMG that vibes player tho
2:51 lick
Good grief.. they are all so young... where doth the time goeth?
Mikey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never realised Nigel Mansell played drums!
I think that's Peter Erskine.....
2:50 The Licc
Fuck corona, you know why jazz lovers are completely at the advantage. Because we live forever ..,.!!!
