Krita was also a nice surprise for me. I can do anything I used Photoshop for. There is even android Tablet version if I wanted to use it somewhere remotely, it is exactly same app, not lite version. Also Krita community is great and very positive.
Thanks for sharing Mateus, yes - I was a photoshop user for years, but much prefer Krita, I have not explored 90% of it yet, will one day try the animation side, but really love it. Thank you for the (positive) comment and for watching the video - it's really appreciated :-)
Thank you for tis, I have not come across Vectornator - but that sounds perfect as a replacement, yes - though being just Mac may be a bit limiting. Thanks so much for that input, much appreciated! :-)
Great video, subscribed. I'm a complete beginner and am looking into all these free tools, I'm not familiar with all the terminology yet so which one of these three free programs would you recommend for something like bringing in a pre-drawn character and making it move its limbs/animate (I guess it's called rigging?) and simple lip syncing? Thanks in advance!!
Hi Anne, thanks for watching and subscribing. For simple or complex animation I would suggest OpenToonz as I know it well and know what it can do. It has a rather steep but once you get to know it, you will learn to love it! Keep watching, all the best with your endeavors and shout if you need any help. All the best 😊👋
The only one that I don't use on your list is shortcut - I'll look into that. But blender also offers a editing solution. But although it's not free At the moment I'm totally blown away by the painting program Rebelle, it's all what corell painter should have become if taken seriously. And at a much lower prize tag. Love what Jeremy Bullock has done with opentoonz in form of Tahoma2D making it much more accessible. Many of his achievements actually been ported into OT.
Great video! I'm curious about how these tools-OpenToonz, Krita, and Shotcut-can be integrated with AI workflows. In your experience, which of these is best suited for working with AI, particularly for enhancing or automating creative tasks? Thanks!
Hi Fred, thank you for your kind comment, and for watching. To be honest, I have no idea, I guess time will see some AI finding it's way into most "apps" but at this stage, I really can't say. I am sure it will change the nature of these programs, hopefully for the better. All the best, and thanks again for watching :-)
How are you sir, I hope you are fine. I have made a 4.51 minute video using opentoonz. The software hangs a lot when a video longer than 2 minutes is made and the rendering of mp4 happens only after trying several times. And when I put a recording in the 4.51 minute video, its sound quality got spoiled. Plz help
Hi Muhammad, first of all well done on making this almost 5 minute video - that is no small feat! Hopefully we will see it on your RUclips channel soon. Yes, OpenToonz does create issues when exporting to mp4 etc, it is a problem that I get around by exporting short pieces and then compiling them in an editing software such as Shotcut. I add audio there too, then export the final mp4 from Shotcut, or any editing software. Good luck and I hope to see what you have created soon! :-)
@@jameswhitelawanimation thank you sir, after uploading I will definitely tell you, as you said that the video should be cut into small pieces and added in the shortcut, small pieces means minimum how many minutes of pieces will be correct
Hi Muhammad, it really depends on how fast your computer is, and what it can handle, if the scene is very complex, it may have to be cut into a lot of smaller pieces of a few seconds each maybe, if it's really simple, maybe only a few minutes each, so it really depends. I would start by cutting it in half, then take those 2 halves into Shotcut and work with them. If they need to be shorted, then cut it into quarters etc. and see how it goes. Let me know if you come right.
Thank you so much for this! I'm a 2D artist who illustrate in cats & desserts, and would love to learn simple animations eg. coffee in a cup becoming a cat. Which software would you recommend to start first? Thanks in advance!!
Hi Heather and thank you for watching. There is a lot of free software available, but I have chosen to narrow it down to these few, so I can say I am a bit biased towards them. OpenToonz is great, it really is, but you can also animate on Krita, and it may be simpler. Some people say the learning curve on OpenToonz is steep, but I must say I didn't find that. Try a few, then maybe you will see what suits you. All the best with your cat and dessert illustrations! And thank you again for watching :-)

Thank you. All the best in all you do!
Thank you, and the same to you, I wish you all the best 🙏😊
I use opentoonz, Krita, Blender and shortcut. I even use Tahoma2d as well.
Awesome, they are all great free resources 👌
Thank you James! You ate the best
Thank you Jaison! :-)
the 5th alternative might be Inkscape.
Thank you, it may well be 👌
Vectornator is good I feel as an illustrator and Corel draw replacement. But i think it’s only for Mac

Thanks so much James, I've already downloaded it and have been watching the youtube videos, including yours :)@@jameswhitelawanimation
Awesome, good luck with OT - I am sure you will pick it up fast. Have fun, it's a great piece of kit :-) @@anndavidson6950

Opentoonz is best ❤
Thanks Vijay, and I agree with you, I love OpenToonz 👌❤️
