The year was 1981. Silverlake, in L.A. I was 26 years old, and I entered a gay leather bar called One-Way. Black Lights, Neon lighting, drifting clouds of cigarette smoke and the guys were definitely fit. It was obvious, a lot of them worked out. All around me, guys wearing black leather jackets, or leather jackets. Sturdy leather boots, some displaying spurs. Leather pants, jeans. Some wore studs on their jackets, or leather vests. Wall to wall guys, absolutely sure of themselves, and this was their chosen environment to meet others. A significant connection to all of this, was the management's extraordinary choice to hire a DJ who was 100% obsessed with Post Punk, Cold Wave, New Wave, Goth. In this L.A. bar and nowhere else in a radius of many, many miles, in early 1981, the DJ was playing The Associates, Scars, Department S, Simple Minds, The Teardrop Explodes, Siouxie & The Banshees, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Names, Joy Division, Romeo Void, Nico, Cowboys International, Gary Numan, Ultravox and so much more. Almost none of this music was released on vinyl in the U.S.A. That DJ paid a lot of money, continuously, to buy U.K. imports: LP's, 12" singles, 7" singles you'd hear nowhere else. I realized, like me, he must have been going to Hollywood every week, to an international news stand on Las Palmas Avenue, right next to Hollywood Boulevard. There, week after week, you could buy U.K. music papers like Melody Maker, New Musical Express, Sounds and others. Through these papers you'd gain insight about the latest British, Irish, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and European Continental Music Scenes- and the records these bands and recording artists were putting out. Each week, reviews for 7' singles, 12" mixes, LP's, almost none of which had a U.S. issue. With new insight, you'd shop at L.A.'s coolest record stores that took a chance on carrying the imported records. That early Spring night at the One-Way, I heard, for the first time, a band called Depeche Mode. While other guys were busy drinking, conversing or planning on hooking up, I was at the DJ booth! He knew, from my own knowledge of this new, alternative music, that we thought alike. I left the One-Way with a piece of paper in my hand. Not phone numbers. No; it was my hand-written notes on any bands I was hearing for the first time that night. Within days, I bought my first record by Depeche Mode. U.K. import, of course. THIS VIDEO: I'm seriously impressed with the quality of the cinematography. I realize, a lot of thought went into choosing the locales, and the timing of something like a Ferris Wheel and a carnival. The lighting is superb. Architecture, luminous yet cold with shining steel and glass. Neon and reflected, shimmering illumination on shadowed skyscrapers; that lonely train ride; an outlined city, darkened by silhouettes. The beauty of Night, with all the allure and mystery, waiting to be discovered. I recognize Dallas; I don't know if other locales were chosen as well. I do know, your video truly interprets what Black Celebration is trying to convey. You've done an outstanding job!
They are their own genre at this point...electronic fused goth dance emo would be my best description..... And it took them twenty years to fill stadiums. ~ Love to you~
It was a horror game that brought this song to my attention. "7 Days a Skeptic" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw. On the seventh day, when it all comes to a head, a midi version of this song starts playing. You're tasked with searching the area armed only with a rapidly weakening stun gun and your wits against a horrible abomination in human flesh. "You think you hear footsteps..."
