I have to say, that athough it was a great haul, I think we as viewers don't always realize the potential hazards that can happen at any time. This exploding bottle was really hazardous. I always wonder about unsanitary things getting into the eyes, etc. I want to thank you for your perseverance and your dedication. It is much appreciated by me, and I'm sure, many others. Thank you!!!
@@elmerkilred159 I’m nervous about that 🤷🏻♂️ I’m hopeful that it being below the water table allows all of the yucky to leech out 😬 but it may very well be a time capsule of fecal bacteria 🦠
Damn! The Exploding Wine bottle surprised the crap out of me! I am really glad that you was not hit in the face or eyes with the flying glass shrapnel .. 😲😲
Looks like you had the perfect storm with that bottle. You had mentioned the ground water was cold and that and the surrounding soil was probably keeping it in balance. No soil pressure, cold bottle, sudden introduction of warm air and warm hands....grenade time!! Glad you were not hurt, too bad you lost that unique bottle. I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of railroaders, the amount of liquor bottles you found does not surprise me one bit!!
I found a place in the woods where they camped for a while when they built the railroad tracks. There were piles and piles of some of the coolest bottles I've ever seen. This video makes me want to make a trip out there to see if it's all still out there.👍
My wife and I enjoy your channel immensely. The history you unearth is incredible. We really appreciate the information you provide throughout your episodes. Keep up the great work and we look forward to seeing more videos in the future.
that's not what caused the explosion. fermentation occurred over a long time with soil pressure stabilizing the bottle. when he picked it up it disturbed the fluid releasing carbonation.
Yeah. The pressure of the soil was the only thing holding the bottle together. And the stability was keeping the pressure from agitating. He picked it up and shook it, that's how you make it go boom.
@@nightmansmemo I wouldn't; not from the outside factors alone, but also the fact that when wine or beer isn't stored properly; it can't turn poisonous. I have seen quite a few of your videos and am always waiting for the treasure. I lived on a sailboat sailing around half the world for 18 years and did some diving in a few South Pacific harbours. Suva Fiji was our favorite We found bottles, pipes, dishes, etc from all the old ships that sailed around in the 1800 = 1900s Most of my bottles are in my basement and I need to pass them on . Do you know of any museum that would be interested? I wonder what you do with all your nice finds. Many of us would like to know what you do with them. Do you have any videos of the bottles cleaned and maybe categorized? Just so interesting. In any case, thank you for taking us on your digs.

Amazing Haul Guys ! And, Tom ,I am so glad you are okay and not hurt by that exploding wine bottle.! There's always a first time for everything. My guess it was stuck in the mud ,that acted like a cork and the change in temp and pressure set it off. Like taking a pin out of a hand grenade !!! It was scary to watch. You guys keep it real, and I really like that about your Video's. Take care !
I’m SURE I’m not the first to make mention, but some waders , while they might be cumbersome, you might consider wearing some; you don’t want to get some sort of infection, mersa , or who knows what, while you marinate in that mystery stew water… definitely at least watch for signs of infection, and get some antibiotics if need be…that all being said, what a GREAT VIDEO!!! My dad and I started digging bottles 1974. I was very young but it never goes away. I'm 58 I still love the excitement, the finds boy it's great being from Massachusetts boy the finds I've got. Tons of clay pipies cast iron toys AN ENTIRE 1915 FORD VEHICLE, VERY little left but got the plate porclin.
Lucky man. I had a bottle blow up on me in the 70's. It wasn't as violent. I dug all through the 70's into the 80's. Good times. ? For you. You have probably entered this question a thousand times but I haven't found the video where you have. How many paraboots and pairs of gloves do you go through in a year. LOL. I've been watching you for almost a year and I've been going back and watching the ones I haven't seen. You do amazing videos. Glad I found you. Take care.

You scare me when you reach in and pull out the bottles with no gloves. Be careful! A lot of flasks! Enjoyed the video even with the hot coffee...LOL, but so glad you didn't get hurt!
I don’t know how you do it! The excitement of unearthing a piece that hasn’t seen sunlight in a century!! But I can tell you, I was literally catching myself holding my breath when you were at the very bottom of the pit… excellent score!!!

If I had to speculate as to why the bottle exploded I would say it was due to the pressure inside the bottle due to the fermentation of the wine exceeding the bottles' wall strength and while it was underground it had sufficient external pressure on the outside of the bottle to counter the internal pressure. Once you remove it and it no longer had the external pressure on it and you shook it releasing more of the CO2 that was suspended in the wine, the internal pressure exceed the bottles' wall strength and it blew up. Yes you are very lucky!
Love this channel, brings back memories of my family digging up New England lol, we had 56,000 bottles in our collection, most were glass blown from the late 1700 to 1800 hundreds lots of backed clay bottles, use to go looking for old foundations then head for there bumps to find the good stuff, even some old stone walls would hide coins so they wouldn’t get robbed, love the channel, we even tunneled under an old dump road from the 1870s where the city’s outlawed dumping in the back yards, the bump had been closed for over 100 years till we found it in the early 1970s it looks like a war zone after everyone else started catching on lol Norwich ct was a great place for digging, really old town from like the 1640s check it out if your near there, I’ll tell you where to go looking 👍🏼

Reminds me of making wine in prison. We would use an empty bunk and the locker in it. It was a dormitory style prison with office cubicle walls around 5ft tall. We took turns “burping” the bag because it filled with gas as it fermented. One day, we’re playing cards in the day room…and BOOM. I instantly knew what it was. The smell filled the dorm. The person who’s turn it was to burp the bag that day, had not done it and the bag blew up. It warped the locker to where the door wouldn’t close after. Lol… I would imagine something about the temp change made that bottle explode. Rotting fruit and or bread creates lots of gas.
Wowsers you and your friend are extremely lucky to have not been injured and you blinded. Great haul though. Please take care and thanks for sharing 👍🙏❤️
haha thanks! man, i havent seen you in the comments in awhile! hope everything is well.... now go to bed, it way too late to be watching below the plains videos!

I am you did not get hurt from the bottle exploding! Does any of the bottles found go into a museum or sold to help with costs associated with digging these pits?
You must remember that temperature plays a big part in digging for bottles, especially the thinner glass bottles and the more delicate pieces or they can Crack or explode as you have already found out. Keep them down. Intill they can acclimate with the temperature.
I'm more & more convinced of something I'd previously thought: people in the past went thru life (if they could afford it) in a slight alcoholic haze. The vast majority of bottles you pull tend to be liquor, beer & patent medicine/prescription. Given that many medicines had high alcohol volumes as well as marijuana, cocaine and opium, people just must have been some defintion of "high" an awful lot of the time. You can see why prohibition came to be approved - the more-or-less sober folks must have decided they didn't want to put up with all the definitely not sober folks. I believe the free-from-doctor's prescription drugs thing disappeared around the same time as prohibition - cocaine was removed from Coca-Cola, opium dens closed down, marijuana made illegal - oh! And heroin was no longer freely available. Yep, people were seriously buzzed in the past...
humanity has been buzzed since time began, it is built into the human DNA to experiment with plants or anything else they came across. Now we have AI and video games with eatables . Not saying it is good but it is not going to stop anytime soon unless of course they get their wish and depopulation us all.
I used to dig bottles when I was a kid over summer vacation from school in southern Massachusetts in old cellar holes and next to old stone walls where there was a steep bank where trash was thrown. But never a privy hole though all I can say is you earned your stripes on this dig exploding bottle and collapsing walls holy 💩 and digging in 100 year old 💩 kudos to you kid 😊👍
Glad that didn't hurt you. Never would have seen that happening. I've seen when homemade wine did that , probably the same type of thing. Fermentation is crazy
I am very thankful that the exploding glass didn’t get in your eyes or face.
Scary stuff,🙏
Amen!!!
What's the contingency for rescue if a wall caves in on you?
Yeah same but that got my attention lol. First time watching this channel. The algorithm nailed this one. 😂

You must remember that temperature plays a big part in digging for bottles, especially the thinner glass bottles and the more delicate pieces or they can Crack or explode as you have already found out. Keep them down. Intill they can acclimate with the temperature.
Glad you are both alright. You can actually see the shards of glass fly everywhere! 😮
Hey Tom, thank the Lord you came out of that ordeal with no injury!!!! Great haul!!
That was a Grand opening! Thank you for all you do.
Thank God you still have 2 good eyes! Googles...or safety glasses would make sense in doing that work. What a video, so glad you are o.k.!!!
I guess at the 32 minute mark you dug into the "friday all you can eat bean burrito special" use layer.
Now that was hard work just watching. Impressed with your commitment for sure, now I think i need to go shower 😂
As always, cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Always was hoping that water could be sprayed on bottles when you found them. Now, I got my wish!
Beautiful vintage bottles.
I found a couple of 1920s apothecary medicine bottles from a thrift store for $2.99 each.
😃Super find.

Damn feller. You are lucky. And didn’t even say okay that’s a wrap for today. That will probably never happen again. Cool you caught it on video.
Amazing!
Now THAT opening caught my attention!!
Glad that didn't hurt you. Never would have seen that happening. I've seen when homemade wine did that , probably the same type of thing. Fermentation is crazy
The heat from your hands plus the pressure of fermentation boom im glad your okay soo lucky 😮😊
Thank you
So glad you didn't get hurt 😊 amazing video they sure loved their liquor 😅
