Kody Brown has done more to discourage polygamy than 100 years of laws.

At the polygamy discussion panel at ULV, Janelle smuggly announced that she had her own bank account, full financial autonomy and put down the woman who asked about finances. She refused to listen to or validate the polygamy life experiences that the other ex-polygamy speakers were sharing. It took her another 10 years to see the financial vulnerability of her position. Coming out of their relationship, Janelle NOW wants the legal system to defend her financial rights. I feel Janelle's pain and anger. I want to give her a big hug. And I want to smack her for putting herself in this position.

Meri is a perfectionist. She is afraid of being criticized by Kody for making a wrong decision again. It's HARD for a perfectionist to make a decision when they know that they will always be told that they decided wrong. It is paralyzing.

Robyn's purity speech would have been acceptable in my Southern Baptist church growing up. It just hurts me how much she seemed to also classify her kids as mistakes. I was conceived out of wedlock and my mom was adament that I was a blessing, never a mistake. Even though she believed in purity culture, she always put the mistake on herself.

I've never married and it amazes me how many people think that I must be miserable. Well, people who are monogamous can be miserable and lonely. I think this shows that you need to be happy with who you are and then also be in the right relationship for you; or not. wherever you go there you are.

I loved hearing you talk about purity culture and how much it shames people! I grew up with Evangelical Christian purity culture, and the teachings were nearly identical. My first time was not consensual (which it took me years to realize), and I felt overwhelming shame. I felt exactly the way Sam described: that I had messed up, and I could never take it back, so who cares about anything? It's been 13 years, and I'm still trying to unpack and release those emotions. Purity culture has the unfortunate unintended side effect of heaping more shame on SA & CSA survivors. I have actually never told my family what happened because I felt so ashamed, afraid, and didn't want to hurt them like it had hurt me. I don't know how to tell them after so long, so I just live with my secrets.

He grew up on a fundamentalist type compound, married a woman from the LDS faith, then a woman also from the compound, and then a woman who was just a younger lost soul type. So interesting how the show ties the idea of living in secret in main stream Utah and how the fundamentalist compound still plays a significant role in their lives.

Meri’s indecision always drove me nuts too! I do have a theory though about why Meri may have let Kody ultimately decide for her. I think Meri knew Kody well enough and knew of his ridiculous NEED to control everyone and everything in his universe. I believe Meri knew that if she told Kody that she didn’t want another baby with him, even if he also didn’t want another child with her, he would have held that over her head for the rest of (well, eternity I guess. lol). I think she knew it would be better for her to let him feel like it was his decision. So he didn’t feel like she was rejecting him in any way, because Kody is so insecure in that narcissistic way of his. He already has a past of treating Meri poorly, likely in retaliation for some real or perceived slight from Meri. (I’m thinking of that Christmas where he gave Meri zero gifts, but loaded Christine up and (I think) Janelle finally got an old hoodie to give her so she would have SOMETHING). She already knows he can be cruel and I think she was trying to avoid his wrath. I do believe Meri was in a real state of transition as far as how she felt about having another child. I also don’t believe she really wanted another one by this point. Leon was much older, her relationship with Kody was crumbling to nothing. She knew she would be doing it all alone, look how much time he spent with Truly and he seemed to like Christine at the time! (more than Meri at least). So she had to know she would be mostly alone in her house, raising a baby while Kody gave all his time and attention to Robyn’s kids. (Yikes) So all that to say, I think Meri may have been trying to protect herself here. It’s all very messed up, but this is life with someone as terrible as Kody. So glad all three women got out finally!

I grew up with the understanding of no sex before marriage.
I had no problem with it.. Maybe I'm just a matter of fact person? I just figured making wise decisions in this area was like anything else, not getting into deep debt, etc. I looked at it like not playing in traffic. You might come out fine, you might not, but one more likely way to keep from being run over was to cross the road at the crosswalk after looking both ways.
But my parents were also not into shaming, more into just matter of fact. We did not get long talks on purity and modesty. We got a lot more discussion on what it meant to make wise decisions especially in life altering situations. So perhaps that has something to do with my retrospective outlook. I think my parents put me on a good road and I'm content with it.
I did get happily married to someone raised very differently and we have a number of kiddos ourselves now. ❤

I think abstaining until you are ready is perfectly healthy. I know a lot of people disagree but everyone is different. I never engaged in any intimacy until I was in a committed relationship. A lot of people I grew up with thought that was crazy but I just wasn't interested without some established emotional safety.
It's like most things in a relationship. You get to choose the people who have a say in your personal choices. Purity culture and sometimes hookup culture both try to make those personal choices a public issue, but really we should all just be allowed to make them for ourselves.

I know people who grew up with this purity belief a lot of them have such an unhealthy relationship with sex and intimacy. It's such an odd thing to me for a church to have a stance on. It seems a lot of times she actually has made a decision, but waits for someone else to give their input, and then she’ll say the opposite just so she can make that person look bad or look like they’re just against her.

Robyn could’ve done the sister wives closet on her own because the 3OG’s had their own business they never asked for Robyn’s help hell Christine took care of all the children except Robyn’s by Robyn’s choice she worked nights & was the one that was the glue to that family Also Kody acts like no man has ever had a divorce they don’t hang with their children at their ex wives house he’s just making excuses just as Robyn on working Yes the repeat of the same is aggravating watching same over & over As the seasons continues he begins to be more detached from the other wives I’m excited to see what happens to the wives after polygamy Robyn is the head wife the favorite & in one season I remember Kody saying Robyn is the princess she doesn’t have to work or clean just sit & look pretty 🤢🤮🦋💋

I was raised evangelical. Both of my parents embraced it. My mother now feels like it was such a waste, that she spent so many years making choices that were not in her best interest and not in her childrens' best interest. It harmed her and us in deep lasting ways. I think abuse can happen in many contexts, in an atheist home, a polygamous home or a fundamentalist home. I think the problem with fundamentalism of any kind is that it gaslights people and minimizes and rationalizes the abuse they experience and often causes them to feel responsible for the pain they experienced. It is institutionalized abuse. It may not be everyone's experience, but someone who does experience that would have a very hard time believing that these women are happy, because they believe they are brainwashed into internalizing their abuse.

I think Meri was guarded early on in the show. I know they all signed up for this show but as far as Meri I appreciate that she didn’t hand out the bullets people would shoot her with. As far as the purity speech it was the stupidest scene in the entirety of the show. Robyn claimed that Preston took it from her. Well if that is the case why weren’t the cops called. Sorry but it took both of you. She is not innocent and how did her children feel hearing they were a mistake. Good Grief!

In the storyline of Meri having another baby.. deep down she wanted another baby and I think she was scared to let Moriah down by saying No. Had Robyns offer come much sooner she probably would have went through with it but by the time the offer came she was only 2ish yrs from being an empty nester and starting all over again at that point Im sure isnt easy. I also believe thats when Meris dymic changed so much within the family. Moriah is gone to college and other then Family functions theres No real good reason for day to day involvement with the other wives bc they are still raising kids but Meris done. I think thats why when Christine left Kody it was so easy for Janelle to be drawn to Christine bc the kids are still attached. Janelles gonna go where kids are (as moms do). We cant help that Robyn had more kids after the 3 OG’s were done.

I think the situation with Mary and the decision-making is that giving the marriage she was in and the dynamic send it she could not actually be able to voice her true opinion and wishes about most situations. Most likely it's because it was the opposite of what everybody else wanted, or Cody would not approve of it because when you look at how she operates in her personal life outside the family she's very much of an in control boss knows what she wants type of a person. I just don't think that person was a fit in that family and that's To be blamed on her upbringing, and the religious repression of her, having to be a submissive wife

The Miracle of Forgiveness -- "It is better to die in defending one's virtue than to live having lost it without a struggle". This was many a Mother's Bible to further indoctrinate the idea of purity.
You add childhood SA to the mix when a young woman who is trying to maintain her purity with these ideals in mind just further the trauma and the feeling of unworthiness aka as good as dead.

As someone who has seen every episode, I think your read on the wives and Kody is pretty spot on. Thanks for speaking against purity culture. It's so harmful. I remember the debate episode. This show has really gone out of it's way to try and paint the Browns as "not like the other polygamists" but imo, the exact same abuses and problems pop up over time. I don't like that they dismiss the abuses and hardships that people have gone through. I agree, I don't think people would practice it without the religion. In my opinion, the religious doctrine is coercive control. Kody and Meri's child was the only one who ever said they wanted to live polygamy...and well that didn't pan out. (Though this is not uncommon for queer people in really religious groups to try and become really "good" at doing their religion).

Robyn's purity speech made me sick for so many reasons 1, what if the child was assulted, they were truely in love with their partner, like you both said that we are human and humans make mistakes, she just made this speech to reasure Kody that she is more worthy than she should have been after basically destoying her ex-husband as a monster.

Some Christians don't believe in divorce. And if you do get a divorce, you shouldn't remarry. I don't want to be remarried because I don't want children of my own. I knew this one couple; they would make out in the back of the van while my boyfriend and I were in the front seat just starring at each other. The girl's parents didn't like him, so they made her go on a mission. I found out this because my then husband and I were in her parent's ward.

I take everything Kristen Decker says with a grain of salt. She thinks every women living plural marriage is miserable and every one that say they’re happy are brainwashed. How does one defend themselves against a mindset like that?
While I agree it’s wrong to shame people for premarital relationships, they’re are those of us who believe it’s a sin.
I think people shouldn’t judge, but also be able to say what they believe is right or wrong.

The Brown family seems to fail/have failed badly at their polygamy.. I think, Cody and Robyn are a very happy couple, and the complete polygamous Browns' relationship is less so, in more and more stark contrast.
This is the essence of successful polygamy/polyamory, I believe, that all involved parties are required to manage emotions respectfully, and it probably is not easy to do - a lot of work and deep dedication it must take to live (happily) this way.
Add children to the mix, and I cannot even begin to think how hard this emotional juggle may get, wow 😮
