This is so funny bc amongst ultra Orthodox Jews there's a lot of things that are forbidden or discouraged because they "might lead to mixed dancing" between men and women. Basically it's a euphemism for sex but also reflective of the over scrupulosity of avoiding something that might lead to something that might lead to sex

I was raised Baptist (1960 and 70s) and in in our family we had no problem with dancing. I loved that joke as a teenager. I loved to dance to rock and funk. Mom and I loved watching Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Ginger Rodgers and the dancing on the old variety shows. (Sony and Cher etc) I loved the Jackson 5 as a young teen.

I remember watching the episode and thinking that that family was definitely doing polygamy because of the sexual aspect and the husband was twisting the Bible to suit and convince his wife. I didn’t like it. And you could get the vibe that the Browns were uncomfortable with their version of polygamy too, and I think they were picking up on the same thing, that they’d stumbled into a sexual arrangement rather than a spiritual one 😬

I would imagine the investment deal never came to fruition because of the Browns. They didn't seem particularly diligent about running the business in an organized fashion so I always assumed that they didn't follow through on getting that done, especially with all the other things going on with the family over the next few years.

I was raised in something called "the full gospel movement". A cult. Yes. But I was born there and didn't escape until my mid-twenties. "It's better to marry than to burn" was used to discourage sex before marriage. It was also used to justify the preacher arranging marriages! I wanted to attend college, then get married. But my preacher TOLD my boyfriend and I we were getting married and he then booted a single mom and her son from a church apartment (into a small house, away from our church neighborhood) and said my bf and i were moving into that apartment! We asked for none of this, but going against the preacher was akin to going against God! So glad I left! I left that marriage too. All at once.

That’s not a church it’s a dictatorship! I was raised Baptist and was very active in church and youth leadership! Not once did anyone kick anyone out of church for any reason because problems or whatever is what church and brothers and sisters in Christ is what church is for! Run if a preacher tries to marry you off! That’s not his job! In our youth group we studied the word and were told what we should look for in a mate but…we would have run if a preacher tried to make us marry! That’s not a church!

I remember on an episode of Seeking Sister Wives (the relationship didn't work out but) the plan was for the husband to have a bedroom and the two wives would which share a bedroom. They had a twin beds. but of course most nights one or the other one of them would have been in the husband's bedrooms. So I don't think it necessarily has to be as scandalous as people are thinking.

Janelle and Christine raised their 12 kids together. They depended upon each other to make their world go round. How much Kody was or wasn't involved didn't seem to matter, and Meri was happy enough as long as she got to do things her way. So the fact that Kody says he was never in charge of the women, I 100% believe. I think he initially viewed their loyalty to each other as being loyalty to him, but once he stopped being respectful of them, they just removed him from the equation.
With Christine getting upset about Kody and Robyn potentially talking about having another baby, I get it. He wasn't a good dad or partner when Christine was pregnant with Truely (and probably the other kids), and it had to have been very tough for Christine to see him being that for Robyn. I don't think it bothered her with Janelle or Meri, because Kody wasn't a better husband to them than to her. I think them talking about having another baby was just triggering those feelings of abandonment and jealousy that she never really let herself work through.

As a Swede it is so interesting hearing about mormonism and the type of communities that exist. I am a little curious to hear what you think about countries like Sweden which is one of the least religious countries in the world. In Sweden your faith (if you have faith) is a personal thing and something most people keep private to themselves. From what I've understood about religion it is often considered better to be a believer in another faith vs being a nonbeliever. So what do mormons think about nonbelieving countries like Sweden? Be didn’t love these women. I believe him. He just collected mommies. To fulfill his dream of polygamy. Have a bunch of kids. Fulfill his principle, have the elders pat him on the back, be in Gods favor, and have lots of swx with multiple women. And those mommies will take care of him and the kids. All he had to do was give them babies. And if you’re not having a good time with one, you have another to go to. Which ever one amused you that day. But then it became work. So add a new young exciting one. Expected the women to keep their faith to serve God and their husband. But he took them away from church and community so he could be their leader and savior and expect obedience. This way the elders weren’t around to tell him and wives what they should be doing.

The wives get a system established when he’s not there that he probably isn’t involved in, so he’s more of a visitor. I agree with the family meetings. I am interested in your opinion on what is worse. A cult that is involved with sexual exploitation or a cult that is involved in murder.@@GrowingUpinPolygamy

Didn’t most of the biblical men have many wives? They still do in the east.

Would you be ok IF your children chose polygamy in the adulthood?

I would NOT, personally. Because with polygamy comes suffering.

Personally, I would prefer my kids explore polyamory. Polygamy comes with too much misogyny built in.

Polygamy is mentioned in the Bible and God has rules of how the wives are to be treated. Slavery is mentioned in the Bible and God has rules of how they are to be treated. He never ordered participation of either. I wonder if early on, Smith tried to get the slave thing going again.🙄😳

The bible never commands, instructs or condones polygamy. It documents it. It shows mankind disobeying God and going their own way by not practicing marriage as God said it to be. The bible shows the sin of man and all the problems polgamy causes just like it shows murder, worshipping false gods, and fornication- never condoning it. Some men in the bible practiced cultural polygamy that God never called them to do or commanded them to do. The first few chapters of Genesis explains the biblical model of marriage of male and female becoming one flesh denoting a union of two people into one. That is all God says. If you have multiple wives that is not one flesh. That is uniting for lack of better words multiple fleshes. And look at all the problems polygamy caused men in the bible: examples are King David killed in order to marry Bathsheba and Abraham took on a concubine Hagar to bear him a son since Sarah was still barren at age 90- wow, the problems of that one is the root of Arab people against the Israeli people. Polygamy doesn't work. From a biblical perspective God created us to have monogamous male/female marriage.

This is why christ came into the world. The new testament has to be taken seriously. No polygamy in the new testament....and in the old testament mostly it was the kings who had concubines...they were not considered wkves. The threshold the end of the book of revelations in the Bible God specifically warns every single person NOT TO ADD OR TAKE OUT anything from his word..the bible. Joseph Smith or other mormon prophets saying God told them things needed to be taken out or added to the bible...they are liars. God himself put the last ...period and last sentence and last word in the Bible and the Bible stands on its own. God would never ask anyone to change what he spoke because he has asked or told us to be warned if anyone adds or takes out or changes his holy words...they will not be going to heaven. The new testament and the old testament mesh. In the book of Daniel in the ot. Has prophecies about things that will be happening in the nt. Read read read always ask God for his wisdom to understand his words. Very important to do what God Our father has told and asks of us.

When it comes to polygamy, Christians have unequivocally told God..HE IS WRONG. All religions based on the bible pick and choose what laws handed down by God are good and which ones are bad. So God is not all knowing since he didn't know polygamy was bad. Stoning gays to death is bad, etc., etc..
