Outdoor Prepper - I always turn off the fuel petcock when shutting my generator down. It takes a minute or two, and I was under the impression that would empty the carburetor bowl. Is that a recommended practice or should I drain it this way?

Thanks for watching! You are correct - always turn the fuel off and let the generator run until it dies by burning the remaining fuel in the line. I have noticed though through the years that some fuel still remains in the carburetor bowl and it can cause issues if left for many months. It’s best to do what you do as well as drain the remaining fuel from the carburetor bowl if you plan on not using the generator for many months and if you carburetor has the drain screw as some do.

Watching you do that makes my back hurt. You should have brought it to the edge of the table. You can set your pan on the floor. The filler tube has a little hook under it on the generator so that if you put a funnel under the oil tube, it will hook onto the oil filler tube, guiding the oil where you want it and keeping all the oil off of the generator and its bottom.

That’s a good point and next time will definitely give it a try! Thanks for watching!

the worst thing you can plug into a brand new generator is a space heater.. rule of thumb is half load during break in.

Very informative generator maintenance video. Thanks for sharing. Are you up for a collaboration? Hipa supplies parts for small engines and maybe we would work together to help more people in the community.
