      Not true. The most common cause of injury is when the mechanics get bored and start putting half inch wrenches on half inch impacts. I should know. XD

    Ive been changing commercial truck tires for about 10 years. I can say these work and saved my life when one blew up on me.

      @@rabbidrobrc9123 exactly brother it's not the tire that is the problem it's a failure of the operation skills of the tire changer. I've changed hundreds of tires from tractor tires to semis and front end loaders. I've never once had a failure, why because I made sure to pay attention and not over inflate.

      @@Gabztar97 well first off I've work In a on site tire and engine repair company and you inspect every tire and rim before doing anything. The main cause is over inflation not faulty tires or rim's. Like one if the other guys said I've been in the line of work and only know of one guy who blew a tire up and it was his fault due to over inflation. Hes right pay attention to what your doing.

    I met a reconstructive surgeon who told me about a tow truck driver who had a semi tire explode in his face. He didn't use a cage...so the surgeon stood over his face reconstructing it for 17 hours straight... no break or stopping... reconnecting bone and tissue... It gives me chills down my spine to think of it...awefull injury... BE A SAFETY NERD>>> KNOW AND APPLY ALL SAFETY PROCEDURES!!!!!!

    An excellent and VERY informative video! I’m a 40 year retired auto mechanic that has seen too many close calls over the years. When people complain about the cost of such safety equipment I just tell them that you can’t put a price on your life or a lifetime with major injuries due to a momentary lapse in safety.

      Yeah but how many times have CAR TIRES blown off the rim.?? I’ve changed tires as well, and never had blow off a Normal Wheel. Never messed with a split ring/rim/3-piece. So I’m 100/100 not blowing off tires. Why the cage for NORMAL CAR TIRES. Dude in the video claimed three minutes for each vehicle and it was maybe 30 seconds of difference between cage and no cage..

      Keep in mind, alcohol causes 90k deaths annually I'm the US, asdn smoking causes 480k, 42k of that is from second hand smoke, many of them being children. Yoiu can save lives by NOT spending money. 0 dollars is much cheaper than a tire cage.

Sometimes I get a customer that's upset because their car is taking too long to be repaired to which I reply; safety safety safety is always always first! you might think the customers first, but no safety safety safety,..... for the technician, for the customer's car, and for the Integrity of the building! Then the Integrity of the business will be impeccable and untarnished

      Oh please I have done thousands of tires and never had a tire explode. Never. And u can do tires under 5 minutes I ve timed myself. 10 total dismounting mounting and balancing. No cage.

      @@jasonthornton1233 my left ankle says your wrong ive done thousands of tires ive had multiple explode the one time i dont use a cage i ended up with 2 titanium plates and 24 pins and screws that particular one was an 11r 24.5 pivot. It can happed with any tire always let the pros do it.

    This story reminded me of a tire cage that I had built that saved a tire man from serious injury, 4 days after it was built. A multi piece rim, tube type tire assembly, 10 x 20, Truck tire, weighing almost 170 lbs exploded. The reason for failure was the multi piece rim components were inadvertently mismatched. The tire cage had the same bowed result due to the tire explosion, as depicted in the Branick photo's.

    My friend Paul Cox (RIP) died from a tire explosion back in the early 1990s, working for his brother. I was also working for him at the time. I quit that line of work after Paul got killed.

    I'm a believer now after seeing my buddies arm after the cast was removed . the two bones in his lower right arm were shattered in 32 places . his fingers were as big around as a can of 5 hour energy drink . he was airlifted to a bigger hospital . after stabilizing the arm they told him to be prepared for six more surgeries . the scar looks like a two inch wide strip of muscle was removed from wrist to elbow , and his fingers are still beyond belief

      @@scrappyny7432 Thank you Greg NY I hope so too . An additional piece of information is that , the air hose apparatus was not a squeeze trigger type . It was merely a coupling you pushed onto the air valve . The inside threads of which locked onto the outside threads of the valve . He stayed with it attempting to remove the hose while it continued pressurizing and BOOM ! the tire blew apart shooting some 30ft into the air (rim and all) while knocking him back about 20ft . Two fingers and his wrist bones were never found again . Surgeons managed to save the arm and 3 fingers but they are unusable . (John is a 275lb man thrown 20ft clear of a rim and tire he was repairing)

      @@scrappyny7432 Thank you too Greg . Yes , very over inflated . He had been working on a girlfriends flat tire by removing it from her car . He then used brute force at another one of his friends home , managed to get the flat tire off and then managed to get another tire back on the rim . Since they didn't have a working compressor he drove it to a local "self-serve" truck gas station . That particular station had the proper long type of air chuck/pressure gauge for many years but at some point had been stolen . At which point a simple push-on nub had been put on . He started putting air in the tire and managed to get the bead set but having threads inside the air chuck and threads on the outside of the valve they locked themselves into place and very rapidly he had a run away amount of air pouring into this car tire . But with air coming from a distant compressor set at well over 100lbs shut off point it never stopped , and he fought to break the grip of these threads _____ when he should have let go and ran . It was WELL over inflated before it blew .

    I changed tires around 1972 at a garage I worked at. Car tires,truck tires and semi tires. We used these cages on semi tires only because of the split rims. Good thing we did.

    I'll add another piece of advice. Don't stand near the driven wheels of a car being dyno tested! I had noticed tyre deformation on cars being run at a few dyno days, so I made sure I wasn't near the driven wheels after that. Then at one dyno day a tyre exploded and the guy standing right alongside it had his leg broken and ripped open! He was a mess. Other people were cut by flying debris.

    I started in the tire business when I was 17 in the early 80s. I did it for about 10 years and did car tires and semi tires with split rims included we never had a cage. Some of those things made me nervous I'm not going to lie. We were very careful with how we did it though and fortunately no-one got hurt. Back in the day we did things that were a lot more dangerous than today. I would not do a split rim without a cage now. One guy I work with was tearing up a passenger tire mounted on a Coats 40-40 tire changer and the tire blew up and blew his sleeve off his shirt. He was not even injured which is kind of miraculous. On those semi tires blowing up a lot of times it's someone not knowing what they're doing, or just not paying attention and doing one wrong.

      Sometimes paying too much attention to the wrong thing can be your doom like not inspecting the split ring itself and the groove that it sits in closely enough. They both must be clean squarely cut and no damage no Nicks! I've seen big truck tires Bend the crap out of a cage! Now those Earthmover tires, those are beasts oh, I've seen one of those tear the cage up off of the floor, proceed to mangle it, and knock a hole in the roof of the building! Everyone's hair was blown back behind that one. All I can say is it's a good thing it was chained to the cage! One guy turned white as a sheet and had to go home. He was a bundle of nerves for a whole week

    I'm a Tire Tech at American Tire Depot and having a tire blow up while inflating is what I fear someday will happen. I mount and dismount new tires and used ones several times a day I work on at least 80 tires. the new tires I don't really worry about exploding except for those new tires that won't easily sit bead over the rim. I've had to go up to 80psi on some tires for the bead to finally sit. the used tire are alot more sketchy. we don't sell used tires but we do patches on them. Sometimes while inflating you could hear the tire stretching I'm guessing it's the plys or cord that hold the tire together, that noise I hear is those part failing and ripping apart.
    I'm not a pussy, but I would like to have a cage. Unfortunately my work doesn't supply us with a cage. it amazes me that tire shops or any shop that deals with inflating a tire that they aren't required by law to have a cage for workers safety.
    I'll get written up for not having slip resistant boots.
    but it's ok if I inflate a tire and it blows up and I'm killed because the rim flew straight towards my head.
    but God forbid I'm without my boots and I slip and break a bone or fracture something. yes I know a slip or fall can lead to a alot more serious injury or even death. but I've fallen before at work and got right up without a scratch the worst been cuts, bruises.
    I want one of these at my shop. not just for my safety but that of my coworkers. every single one of those guys risk not coming home to their family all could of been prevented had my work supplied the shop with a safety cage.
    I hope I can get one soon. if I can't pay for one all at once I hope the either Snap On, Cornwell or Myers could sell me one and let me do payments on it.

      I'm a tire tech too at americas tire and have the same fear we have cages though just make sure the pump is securely connected to the value we had a close call the other day be safe

      +Devin Williams Tire grease? well no we use another type of lubricant called SLIP TAC we get it from Myers. but no the stretching I hear from the tires is herd almost instantly, I have no more than 20 psi when the noise starts. no way would I ever go up to 80 to sit the tire on a beat up used tire fuck that. I have though gone way past 80psi on new stubborn tires mostly run flats or tires wider than the rim cuz the dumbass customer likes the look, idiots man.

      +Devin Williams BTW, yes the wheel I'll usually have it clamped onto the machine but our store has literally bootleg ass equipment. so I've bought my own everything except a tire machine. I'd like a coats something I plan on getting from Cornwell. but what we have now is some bootleg brand from China they purchase three of those for what one Coats cost but the tire tech is the one who gets fucked using shitty equipment

    Thank you Branick industries for this. I dont have anything to do with tyres or explosions but you guys make stuff that stop people from dying or losing their heads or limbs, and that's kick ass.
    Plus, things that do explode look cool from a distance.

    I've heard of the dangers of tire explosions and know of 2 people that have died from tire explosions but I have never witnessed the awesome power of a tire explosion till I watched you're video. It gives me a new respect when inflating tires.

      In a video that I watched before this the tire had exploded hitting the installer and driving him into the door of a nearby pick up truck.The truck looked like it had been t-boned by another vehicle .The door had been ripped off and the force pushed the side of the truck in 18 inch at the door pillar .They only showed photos of the scene after the explosion. It did not show the victim ,but it killed him.

    Working as a diesel mechanic on a tractor trailer one day I had a sidewalk on a recap tire blow out as I was putting the valve stem core in it. Thank god it was in the cage

    Regular car tires are pretty safe to do without a cage. Your max psi on them is probably 45psi. Cages are more for split rims/bigger tires.

    Exploding tires shown in this video are split rims. I ran a tire store for 3 years and never had an exploding tire, mostly because we didn't do split rims. mounting a tire on a split rim is like setting a rat trap. There is a ring which goes around the larger part of the rim, and it has to be mounted just right. Guys told me about split rims exploding (without a cage) which sent the ring flying across a neighboring river and embedded itself in a tree. They couldn't pry it loose. Couldn't pay me enough to mess with split rims.

    My local tire shop has a large table with all the machines on a row with rollers between them. The last step before the balancing machine is a laying cage with a computerized inflater.

    Just retired from 50 years as a mechanic and back in the early days NOBODY used any safety gear. Yup, no safety glasses, no hearing protection, no steel toe shoes, etc. We also never tried to put a 16"' tire on a 16.5" rim using 150 psi shop air. (I can't believe that's really a problem) I have to say most of us older guys at least had more common sense and were NOT is such a hurry. That said, most safety gear these days does make sense... just to protect us from ourselves.

I can't tell you how many times I saw people wearing PPE during Covid while driving a car by themselves.... then eating lunch while wearing latex gloves that were so dirty, I could see it from 20 feet away. They wear the gear at the wrong time for the wrong reason and wonder why they are having a bad day!

      You're story is nothing more than survivor bias.
      As in, because you've survived anything from going wrong, then it must be down to common sense. The issue is those on the other side are dead, and can't argue the contrary.
      The old story of planes flying back from battles in ww2, with bullet holes all over the wing and fuselage. An engineer was then wishing to invest in protecting those areas. It wasn't until another engineer said "why reinforce these areas, its the areas we don't see that need reinforcing as the plane has gone down and not returned"
      It's another reason you see a lot of people claiming seat belts aren't necessary and back I'm my day we didn't crash. They did, just those who died couldn't say how important it was.

In those days we did see people get hurt, but I feel we learned from it rather than have a nanny state where people blindly follow certain rules, but still don't learn. That's why we have people who wear PPE but still get hurt anyway. As a famous person once said, life is hard, but if you are stupid, life is harder!

      @rupe53 it's actually funny you say about ppe and people getting hurt. To continue the story about ww1 and ww2, and hopefully not to bore you too much, the amount of people coming back to the medical centres with head injuries was low. Until helmets, mainly created from China were introduced to the ranks. Then the amount of head injuries increased and the soldiers then used to refuse to wear the helmet, their ppe, because the stats proved they caused injury. In fact, it was perhaps not so clearly the opposite, the fact people were coming back with head injuries, showed they survived the blast, the bullet, the fall or whatever the mechanism of injury was. But the difference on the surface wasn't they were coming back, it was the introduction of the helmet that made the head injuries rise.
      I think we are seeing more injuries in workshops and other dangerous environments because of this. People are able to get to hospital and the injury recorded, instead of recorded as death.

      think they blow up at 29 psi,they can t handle pressure but never the less a dangerous tire 14,5 psi???is the limit i think anyway they can hurt you pritty bad....inflating a tire on the car truck or whatever read the maximum psi on the tire,and use the length of the filling hose.

    I'm a farmer in Nebraska, and have had lots of tires fixed over the years. We have various tire repair shops in the small rural towns around here. They hire anybody, usually teenagers, to fix tires. No safety standards are taught or enforced. If they have a tire cage, it's usually sitting in the back unused.

    Had a Ford Model A tire and tube blow up on me. Right in my face. Was like a bomb or a shock wave blowing my ear drums out. Shot the center cap out of the front of the store. Almost broke my wrist and could not hear for 5 mins then nothing but muffles for several hours and then several days for my ears to recover. Whole new respect for how dangerous these can be, the tire blew out at only 32 or so pounds and was no joke of an explosion. Wont ever do one again.

      Also implies that the don't take on apprentices, or they wouldn't be able to boast about that the minute one of them graduated.
      It's pretty common place these days. Scoop up the talent, head hunter style, and don't worry about training. Cheeper total cost in the short run.
      The companies that do spend the time bringing up new tradesmen get shafted.
      End result, fewer and fewer places bother with training at all.

I'm fine with them only taking veteran welders honestly as well. I'm 19 and alot of youngins my age seem take to many shortcuts so I'm with veterans getting the job done right

    Ive done commercial truck tires as one of the services we offered in our shop. No formal training just here do it. Finally bought a cage after numerous bad tires peop,e wanted patched we had one explode in cage and just the force of the explosion about took a bay door out. Cage went out into parking lot at same time. For all you newbies be careful and dont hurry. You are the most important part of any job and no dollar is worth your life. Im 56 and have 35yrs experience with all sorts of equipment repair. Be safe guys.

    damn... I've done literally thousands of tire mountings (passenger and racecars) and never seen a failure like this. Now I'm hesitant to even "air up" my tires.

    I change commercial truck tires often, and we have 2 tire cage models, 1 for the standard tires, and 1 for the super single tires, I have yet to see one blow up, but am not looking forward to that first one.

    This isn't going to happen with regular car tires at 35psi. These are for professions where you fill tires very quickly with high pressure hoses. Fear stems from The lack of understanding.

    Just last year I was tooling along the highway in my convertable Mustang. I passed a semi and when I got right next to his trailer wheels, one of them decided to explode. I was right next to it. It was the next thing to a grenade. The debris released from it passed just over our heads and in front and behind us. Because we were next to it, it saved our lives. Unreal. The power of a tire explosion is awesome.

    there is nothing to worry about when filling your tires unless you do what they did and put upward of 100 psi in a tire rated for 40psi

    Tire cages are a must when installing Split-Rim tires. One of my friends nearly died when he leaned over a tire to check the pressure and it cut loose, it shattered his eye socket, fractured his skull and he was bleeding from his nose ears and eyes. After striking him it broke another person's elbow. And unfortunately a good friend of mine did lose his life to one of these rims, a catterpillar scraper rim cut loose and took him clean in two, please use a cage or urge your employer.

    I thought that the only dangerous wheels were the split rim ones, you could also overinflate a one piece wheel too but that is operator error and training should solve that problem especially with a tire inflator that limits the pressure.

    Been working on semis in the same shop for 13 years now. I can't stress it enough no matter how strong the cage is, standing next to it is never a good idea. 110 psi will cut you in half but the new kids think it's a joke. I promise it's not. Don't be stupid.

    Two-piece truck wheels (e.g., "split rims") are much more dangerous than single-piece ones.

      That may be true but even mounting modern tubeless tires on one piece wheels can be dangerous if is not done properly. The mounted tire and wheel should be enclosed in a safety cage when inflating and proper inflation limits should be observed. The two piece wheels with locking rings are still around on a lot of older trucks and buses and need to be treated with extreme respect to avoid property damage and/or personal injury.

    My heart is warmed they spent a lot of their hard earned money on an extra special camera. Not many would actually fly in such a rig. Thanks for pointing that out. This man must really care. Good thing he saved money by selecting "Ominous Medieval Battle Cry" from the free music suite provided in the editing software.

    Everybody is talking about the dangers of split rims and that’s true they can be a real disaster. But the thing is normal car tires can also be a serious problem if they zipper. Friend who owned a garage has a bum arm for life due to a zipper failure of a car tire. Not a rim issue but the tire itself. This was a major brand tire and they paid out heavily.
    Cages are good for everything. Well worth the time for me. Use a remote fill also so you are away from it.

    Not a bad deal really, I've seen a few random exploding tires are their rated pressures. Sure the "time saving" aspect is due to the automatic inflation device, but really coupled with the safety measure, I would gladly put this in my shop (if I had one). The automatic inflation device alone is actually very handy I would say.

    Worked in a service station as a teenager in the late 1960's and fixed a hundred flats on cars and trucks. No one told us about the dangers that working with tires were. Don't think the owner knew either. Fixed 'em all though at $1.00 an hour pay.

    Can tires and rims blow up when they are just being changed for passenger vehicle use? I am 58, I have never seen a shop use a cage when filling tires after installing them. I was just thinking about getting all new tires for my truck. Even if they do use cages to inflate they have to add some air in order to get the tire to seat on the rim, Ali realize it’s usually only about 10-15 psi.

    At a shop just down the road from me a few months ago, a man died when a tire exploded and in the process it ripped off the mans face. He was conscious and in obvious agony for a while. But he succumbed to his injuries. Scary stuff.

    years ago i seen a guy put a 16.5 on a 16 inch rim,,,, bead seating and it blew off the rim,, dang near took his head off

    I saw the after results of a loader tire that was being inflated in the back of a pick up truck blow apart and totally blew the truck box apart. Scary stuff indeed , and goes to show that all tires should be inflated in a safety cage.

    This reminds me of my predicament. I have a work truck with tires rated for 80psi. I have always inflated to this but tire shops always refuse to saying that they dont need that much pressure. I dont get it why would the manufacturer put 80 psi and installers ignore it?

    How many "bosses" would think along the lines of "a cage ain't gonna keep a tire from blowing up. If it's gonna go it's gonna go"! I've known people that think of fuses as completely unneeded "A fuse ain't gonna keep nothin' from shortin' out!" It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that way instead of the safety aspect.

    Every shop I've worked for had a cage except 1.... I've inflated both split rims and regular truck tires

    So after after slowing the video down and watching the time lapse footage of the tire change, it is blatantly clear that the operator using no rack is moving much slower than when he uses the rack.. When played at normal (sped up) speed, its impossible to notice, but in the frame by frame slow comparison, its clear.... this is a sales tactic to make it appear like the rack doesnt slow you down, when it does in fact add another step, therefore MUST slow down the process..You can see the difference at the 2:16 mark (0:23 mark of the time lapse).... Same deal as the people smashing the bread with the knife before trying to cut it, then using the knife they are selling and cutting it properly.. We all know he smashes the bread with the "competition" on purpose...... nothing is different in this comparison.... Manipulation.. Sales tactic. period.

    Great product. Tho I change tyers on trucks and trailers.the spider wheel on these trucks are dangerous can be like a spring as to take them off with caution stand to the side is the best idea I have.. the cage would be important tool at work shop.     I change tires on big rigs for a living at Loves. A lot of guys won't use cages while on roadcalls, wish they would but they'll find out one day. Always use a cage!

    I have been doing tires for 18 years, I have had 13 tires blow up on me. Mostly from tires being no good, dry rot, or ran on flat to long. Never used a cage. By the way 9 mins for tire change on that size is too slow. I would have all done in 7 mins and that’s taken off and back on the vehicle.

    thats true. most incidents at shops seem to be operator error....like racking a car wrong, not paying attention, or not checking for tire damage/max PSI. I know accidents happen and the tire exploding is something i think about every day at work. But you can never be too safe

    This is a great investment for any shop. I work on aircraft and we inflate to over 200 PSI everyday. Guess what, we do not allow a new tire to be inflated outside of a cage when we change tires. On the aircraft we have regulators that allow a max of 250 PSI.

    I don't seem to feel that there is a huge demand for cages anymore cause split rims (widow makers) aren't as common as they used to be.

    Only time I've ever really seen the need for a cage is on split rims. Never seen a rim fail like that before. Usually the tire fails, generally from way over inflation.

    I remember a truck tire shop in the Yukon I used to work at, it had one hell of a nasty rim/tire, dent and mark in the ceiling, that ceiling must have been 25-30 ft high, if someone would have been standing over that tire or had their arm in there they would have been a splat mark up there too.
