It really says alot knowing that Hello Games (the dev studio behind No Man's Sky) were capable of this comeback despite being less than 20 people when they first started redeeming the game, whilst other AAA studios just seem to fail in redeeming their botched games. And as far as I am aware: ZERO microtransactions have ever been added.
There has never been anything paid for but the base game, every update is free and every cosmetic, besides the platform specific preorder ones from 2016, has been free to unlock with time put in through actual missions or expeditions
The comeback would’ve never needed to happen if they didn’t rush out a gutless pre-alpha in the first place
@@SaltSpirits
... Every AAA studio in question:
Like they said 20 people studio, under stress to deliver on time while still keeping their promises as best as they could. It's great now, don't be so salty and maybe drink less spirits :3
@@SaltSpirits The same way Sony screwed Helldivers 2, they screwed NMS. Get that through your empty skull.
@@SaltSpirits Don't act like it's all their fault. People see something and then hype it up putting pressure in the game. Some people don't have the patience to wait for a good game. Cyberpunk also released terribly but it's one of my absolute favorite games. The world, story, and everything. These kind of developers are what make great games. No man's sky is objectively a good game no matter how it was released, and that only happened because the person behind the games creation and the devs actually care enough.
My favorite way I’ve heard someone describe the updates these days as “Sean, we forgave you guys six updates ago. PLEASE take our money”
Consumerism has rotted you.
@@SaltSpiritsit’s more like supporting companies that actually care about their communities
@@FridayProphet1234that is the literal Definition💀 they Messed up and made up for it without Making a new Game so people wouldnt have to Rebuy it. Not to mention that the creator literally celebrated the Game getting mostly positive Reviews on steam showing obvious Investment in the Games Development
@@FridayProphet1234 Except, most of these empty games got cancelled, not fixed, even for free at that. The bad companies never fix their games for free, while this one actually went and done it. Much better than those that said "gamers expected too much".
@@FridayProphet1234 Pressure from publisher. Having introvert going on interviews and being unable to say no. And some other factors contributed to state of the game at release.
It doesn't excuse the release but unlike 90% of other developers they actually did fix the game.
Most of the "broken promises" didn't even come from them in the first place. It was someone else saying the thing first and Sean not saying no. Then the public took it as done deal.
I remember how No Man Sky physical copies were being sold for only $5 in stores a month after release because of how hard it bombed. This really is great comeback.
tnx to this game now every game that came out is half baked pre alpha first season early access like cyberpunk getting updates for 4 years. ITS NOT DLC If you turn off the internet and put cuberprank cd into the playstation you get the first unplayable version or download 100 of gigabytes of updates. That's just a scam. And now all around companies omg am sorry m8 u pay full price for no thing it doesn't work lol as we are so u need wait whole 8 years yeah so proud of this baddie also we need set minimum price 100 for games
@mhmmaxhitmaker8230 Dude chill. It wasn't even No Man's Sky fault that they came out unfinished. They literally lost development progress to flooding, and they wanted to delay it but they were forced to release by Sony. Also, the real culprit for unfinished game garbage-fest are AAA devs like Bethesda and EA. And they usually don't even have the decency of fixing their mess post release.
They fixed almost everything years ago, with either next or beyond, and Worlds 1 was considered living up to their promises. But they are still going. They could ask for money because they already fixed it but they don't, because they are just goated like that.
I’m super excited for the Monster Hunter coming in February. If they make the game playable in 2033, does it still qualify for GOAT status? Maybe we should have a GOTY for games that came out years ago but only became playable after this year
@@cartreezy1631it was good about 2 years after it come, now it's adding more stuff and making it better but at the same time it's all free unlike most devs that would have given up closed the game and moved on and off late we have had a load off games do just that.
@@cartreezy1631There's a "best ongoing support" award or something at the game awards. Idk if thats what you meant exactly
feels like a different game, massive respecr
Being goated would also mean not releasing pre alphas and marketing them as full games. It’s not some miracle that we got here. If they put in another 5 years before they launched they never would’ve been in this mess to begin with.
Internet historian really really covered everything in this amazing comeback. Insane. Amazing

What's even more crazy is that shortly after launch, Hello Games lost they're first office to a major flood and almost killed the company. They're perseverance is something to be admired.
good shit.
stuck to his guns, and actually pulled it back.
genuinely a hero of gaming.
Hero for fixing the game to how it shouldve been at launch?
@@Chadius_ThundercockFixing it, and then adding significantly more for free afterwards.
No mans sky and cyberpunk are the two biggest redemtions in gaming history
Before that theres FF 14 comeback, from bankrupt threathening games to SE biggest cashcow
Not even close. Cyberpunk is still a hollow bland game. It just doesn't have the bugs. The storyline was always underwhelming and the world is empty and barren even compared to GTA V
@@temporaryyoutube2062 so is NMS everytime i install it bc of videos like this i get bored after a week. theres just not a whole lot to do in my opinion
Cyberpunk is still missing everything it was promised to be, and it's not something that can be fixed with updates
That would require NMS being good, it’s been 9 years and the game still sucks ass. The gameplay loop, after almost decade, has still not evolved from “land on planet, realize it’s empty, leave and find another one”
No Man Sky did what every other gaming industry don't want to
Listen to the community
I mean... Cyberpunk also had a massive comeback, but yeah no mans sky had the biggest gap of playability on launch, and today
Not even close. Cyberpunk still doesn't have a shit ton of the things promised and probably never will. No mans sky actually added the things that were promised
And cyberpunk has a MUCH bigger studio behind it
Not to mention cyberpunk is still buggy i was sorely disappointed when i played it recently
@@FishAndKid Yeah i mean... Most of the things we got were bugfixes and quality of life changes. There is a sea of features/interactions/mechanics that they will never be able to deliver, because they are simply too far.
While no man sky has been actively developed, cyberpunk doesn't really... I love that game don't get me wrong, but winning labor of love was a straight up criminal, they fixed the bugs in 2 years, gave us a (great btw)DLC and now leave it to die...
This isn't labor of love, this is just providing enough bugfix to not close your studio outright from the loss of trust from your audience.
Not even close brother ... and I have 2000+ hours on Cyberpunk 2077
i love when developers fail to deliver on promises but then take on the responsibility to fix their game and make it how it was supposed to be: beautiful.
It’s almost as if giving a dev team adequate time to build a game makes the game better. I never would’ve guessed
NMS is a gem of a game. I love that it is also VR. I hope their next game is also VR ready as well and has rotational gameplay and special events.
They failed yet they delivered.
The MVPs in there are the OG players since they played till today
Been playing since 2017! Never gave up since the devs also never gave up!
I love that Sean pulled it around and let his passion make something amazing.
I hate that it set the precedent that releasing unfished games are Ok (not that games before were perfect, but it seemed to spike around that time)
No Man’s Sky genuinely pulled off something amazing. They made promises, fumbled it, got laughed at, and they said “watch, we’ll make it happen.” And they did, they just kept going and they made an amazing game. I picked it up a few years back and put 80 hours into it in my first week. It’s an amazing game.
he is a legend for fixing it instead of leaving it in the dust.
I got whiplash after hearing that it launched 8 years ago. I'm 24 and I remember the launch like it was yesterday, I guess I'm getting old.
This is also why his second game will be even more successful. He probably knew that if he didn't fix NMS no one would buy anything after. I wouldn't have.. but I'm buying LNF on day 1 because of their work after NMS release.
Biggest redemption arc in history:
Did what they said they would do in 8 years, 8 years after you paid.
I was one of those that got over hyped then raged. But came back after hearing about the updates and can say.
Totally different game. The creativity and passion that went into the project shows.
They just keep delivering and it's wild. Huge respect to them for doubling down.
If only more companies were like this, fixing their shit, repairing broken promises + interest, all whilst not asking for in return except for another chance, that I can get behind, asking people to donate to a well known charity as they feel bad, I can get behind that as well ESPECIALLY if it gets us a reward if we donate a certain amount, even if there isn’t a reward I would still probs donate to that charity to help out
And we just got worlds part ll. I feel proud to have a father who bought first edition on ps4 and still uses the same disc on his ps5
The fact they are improving on the redemption by adding even more now is just so good
And now we call “a dev steering the negative review around years after launch through sincere updates” pulling a “no man’s sky” ever since.
Well deserved, bought my copy when it came out and its crazy he is still working so hard on the game.
this is why I will always give that studio the benefit of the doubt
No mans sky is the gift that keeps on giving.
Well deserved. A complete 180 and the game is actually amazing
Hands down one of the best exploration games out there right now.
Hats off ... The man made a mockery of his game, his company and his own name ... And yet, he kept working and working and making the game better. Hats off, what a comeback.
Played the game since the beginning, on and off. It’s come suck a long way and it’s still one of my favorite games to play now and again
"Without leeching a single cent more from the players" That last sentence was an uppercut to the biggest scam in gaming history, Star Citizen.
2016 was almost a decade ago, let that sink in
so where you were 12
You love to see it 😊 and what a great way for gamers to know to support their future projects going forward
Great to see redemption stories like this and Cyberpunk 2077. Both are really worth playing.
What did it for many people was that they saw the developers actually wanted to deliver what they promised and not just run away with the money
And having JUST gotten the Worlds part 2 update, things are certainly looking up
No mans sky and cyberpunk are testament of integrity and hard work!
Just tell you how amazing they’re: nms still updating new content like dlc for FREE ever since they released. This dude have my respect so high
and im always surprised when the updates are like 1-3gbs of content every time. Amazing development team. And as a game developer I aspire to be like them
There is such a MASSIVE number of biomes that will make it so that this game should never FADE away.
Honestly, they didn't keep half their promises, people just seriously lowered their expectations
Just shows how passionate the devs are. They believe the game could be great and didn't give up on it.
this is how you know that 'overpromise' wasn't just a marketing stunt, they really wanted to make a game that matches that promise and believed they could do it. making game is hard, and this is their first one. they have another game in the work now, and i will buy it and trust them to make it work, even if only gradually.
If you have a community where veteran players give newer players 500k units randomly every time they go to anomaly station, then its a good game
When devs actually are passionate and love their game , they'll do anything to fix it
I'm glad for his redemption but it just makes me reminiscent of the PS2 era when you'd get a finished article one day 1
Literally the first major update fixed EVERY problem at launch
He was determined to make the game he always wanted to make, and let people enjoy the vision he had.
I love the story of the no man sky development. I have never played the game. I dont want to but I can still love what happened.
Also had a co-worker who took off work for launch day. And then again for cyberpunk... on PS4. I remember before the launch day of cyber punk telling him "remember no man sky, you sure you wanna do that?" I got a good laugh when he returned to work.
He should let everyone know when he wants to take a launch day off, that way we can use them to predict a game that doesn't deliver at launch
The difference between being beholden to shareholders, and being beholden to stakeholders. Big difference.
The thing is - it wasn't the same kind of broken promises as everyone is used to by now. People thought it was a half-baked underdelivered scam, but actually, they really just underestimated the difficulty of their plans and ran out of time. That's why they kept going - not for money, but because they genuinely love what they do, and they WANTED to see their game to be the game they want to be authors of. They kept writing, growing their team and honing their skills, to be the devs they want to be, and to make the game they want to have
Mind you, every single change and update they rolled for this decade was 100% free. You have the game - you have everything they have ever done over these 10 years. Absolute madlads.
Internet Historian had a great video about this
"Eight Whole" is probably a phrase to be avoided 😂
I remember playing this when it first came out and it was a let down. I never played it after all the updates and fixes but I've wanted to. The idea of this game still sounds awesome
Someone gotta make a documentary on this redemption arc
What I've always wondered all these years is how this studio even managed to stay afloat.
no mans sky and cyberpunk are the best example of if you care about gamers . gamers support u till the end
Although a game dev company shouldn't promise more than they have. It's nice to see some companies don't give up on their ips
We really judged them so harshly on release. I never would have expected this game to come so far.
IMO if we didn't judge them soo hard they wouldn't have developed it further. If the bowl of raw rice is good enough, then why would you change it to a 5 star meal?
they fked up learned their leasson and tried to better their failure. The big fail at the start was all caused by false promises and are self inflicted.
Same with Cyberpunk they deserved all the backlash but they took it to heart and made a better product aswell.
Ah yes, the last game I ever pre ordered 😂
Cyberpunk too
I’m really sorry for what Sony put these guys through.
I’m gonna remember this. No way it’s actually possible to improve a game without up charging even more. Sick
it was actually starting to be great 2 years after its release
I bought it at launch and haven't played since, definitely want to pick it up again sometime
Easily one of the best games from what can only be counted as one of the best development studios in today's market.
not a game anymore, but a literal metaverse
Geometry dash reference (those who know)
("Redemption Arc" is the name of a level lol)
A dev with passion and a dream
Unlike Cyberbug , they now claim to have “Fixed”
You gotta give them credit. They’ve corrected their mistakes and produced a solid title.
Goated devs aimed for the sky didn't reach it originally but did not let that stop them
Ive been having a blast with the new stuff… it feels like the game not only did a 360, but 720 and its fantastic to play with friends.
I started first playing this with my friend a few years ago, and im so glad they didnt scrap it after the launch because it was amazing!!
I heard the reason that the game had less features on release is because the studio flooded and they lost almost everything a few months before the release
This makes me insanely hyped for Light No Fire. I love the traditional fantasy setting so much.
they had a vision and achieved it with passion even though they had a rocky start
Everyone loves a comeback story 😊
I understand that the team started out really small which makes it really hard for them ti develop such a game. The fact that it took so long was sad. It had so much potential. Disappointed millions. Though some people found the problems funny which good for them u know. Game loads heavy. Even after a few years it was still surprisingly crap. Wish it was kept in early access or something before their "release"
No man’s sky should be in Internet’s Hall Of Fame
Not only is it still updating, but there is still not a single microtransactions in it
Yeah, gave it a chance 8 years ago, refunded, not buying it again. If your game is not ready, don't release it, these practices should not be celebrated.
I pre-ordered that game back when I had very little money and I'm still so mad at what was delivered. I played for like 6 months and have never touched it again.
This gane started the trend of unfinished launches.
"fucking mess" is the understatement of the century.
NGL, NMS Devs is totally work from gamer to gamer, any updates they gives it totally making the game better each time, im buying these game because im love the space exploration game but at same time i just want to see if the Devs can fulfill the promise they're made before, boasting so much but see now?, they not only fulfill the promise but also giving much more love and as gamer we appreciate that more than others,
Thank you Sean, thanks for the insanity you said during the game first release and thank you for giving whats you says in the first game.
They went from no man’s sky to every man’s sky
Imagine they just released a completed game tho
Great game. Should have a redemption category just for this game in the games awards
Wow there’s a MASSIVE number of detailed biomes
Impressive
And it's 100% deserved! The game is so much fun now :D
So it took them 8 years after release to put out the game they actually wanted to put out! Shocking
Best dev team ever. I don't even play the game but still know the story of no mans sky. Amazing people deserve our highest praises
Oh hey look, it only took an entire generation of development to ALMOST have all the features it announced with.
Stop celebrating this and remember the scumbag launch for what it was.
I would donate if Sean opens a gofundme just for continous update for NMS. They deserve it
The goat wuold be making a good game from the start.
