Jeff Gordon's popularity skyrocketed in Bristol August 2002. Gordon was always a quiet squeaky-clean vanilla racer (like Johnson now). Rusty Wallace was the cranky veteran nearing the end of his career (like Tony Stewart now). On that night squaky clean Gordon with 2 laps to go. Put the bumper to Rusty and moved him outta the way without Remorse. Gordon was always a star but on that night he stomped his foot on the gas and took what was rightfully his and started his legacy. And NASCAR fans respect driver like that. And the popularity skyrocketed from there.

David Stewart I think that his divorce from Brooke and him finally coming out of the shell she put him in by trying to mold him into this public relations dream during the 90s is what endeared him to fans. Jeff and his stepfather have both said that , the Gordon people saw at track through 90s wasn't really Jeff. And other drivers have talked about how he wasn't accessable to fans back then. He was never as squeaky clean on track as Johnson, Gordon always was somewhere right in between Jimmie and Earnhardt Sr driving style wise. Jeff bumped Rusty out of the way to win at Bristol in 1997 too

    • @donniebeadles7842

What I mean is Jeff never at any point in his career , minded stepping on another guys throat to take a win. He did it all through his career. But the fans saw a more genuine side of Jeff in 2000s.. the push of Kenseth on pit road. Fighting Burton on back stretch at Texas. His fire to win showed more when he started experiencing more defeats.

Everyone starts off knowing what they have to do, whoever does it the best is the champion. You know from the beginning you got to the playoff points, run well enough to make it through the rounds of elimination, and win homestead. It's only fitting a Salty Jeff Gordon fan would go to invalidate his championships

  • @nascarfanatic2425
    @nascarfanatic2425 7 лет назад +12

This is very noble of Jeff to say, and that's something I like about his older self, but the only reason why I don't agree with him is that I believe Jeff and Dale are better than JJ. Heck, it'd be a good competition to see Petty in his prime vs. Johnson in his prime, 'cause I'm convinced they'd be pretty close to even. I do believe, however, that Jeff and Dale Sr. are both better than JJ. And yes, I admit I'm not a Jimmie Johnson fan, but I do respect him, and I didn't jump on the "Jimmie Johnson sucks," bandwagon; I'm not stupid. I know he's very talented, and he'll get more wins before he retires. Whether he gets #8 or not will depend on 1) If he still has another actual drive at the championship in him, or 2) If NASCAR give him the assist like they did in 2010 and 2016 at Homestead.

    • @zzrs
      @zzrs 3 года назад +1

Jeff Gordon is the GOAT IMO. We never saw him decline, he retired a finalist in 2015. He changed the sport completely & transformed it from southern to national. He brought many high caliber young drivers into the sport. He won 4 championships in an eight year span and would have won 3 more if it wasn't because of the playoffs format that costed him the 2004, 2007 and 2014 seasons title even though he scored the most total points. He won 93 races which is a modern era (1972-present) record, he won 3 Daytona 500, he won 12 plate races (most all time) and 9 road course races (most all time too). He was the best all-around driver. His only slumps came in 2008 & 2010 because of back injuries but then he recovered and started dominating again. Had he kept on racing until today instead of retiring 5 years ago and he'd probably have 100+ victories by now, but he chose his family first and I think it was the right decision.

@@zzrsJJ is the goat to me
He raced in 3 diffrent gen cars the 4 5 6 he is 6th all time in wins with the gen 4. He is the all time wins leader in the gen 5 with a spoiler he is the wins leader and is 2nd with a win. He is 6th in the gen 6 cars when it comes to wins.
      Play off success
he has won the most championships under the chase he has the most wins under the chase most consecutive chase aperences and the most in general. He won so much nascar change the entire format not once not twice but 3 times and he kept winning championships
      Track types
Jimmie has the most wins at 1 mile tracks. The most wins at 1.5 mile tracks 2.0 mile tracks he is the all time wins leader at 1 of the 2 tracks and the other he has blown a engine wreck out but mostly ran out of fuel with a couple laps too go. 2.5 mile tracks that are not super speed ways he is 2nd all time. Short tracks he is not a all time great but easy top 10 with 14 wins. Super speed ways same thing with short tracks.road courses he is not great but not average above average.
      All star and crown jewls
He is the all time winner at the all star race and is 2nd all time at crown jewls races.
      His dominate run
From 2002 to 2013 jimmie has finish top 5 in points every year his worst year during this stretch is a 5th place run his best is winning the championship 6 times.
      7 out of 11
He had the most domating fun out of every 7 time champion going 7 for 11 from 06 to 2016
Having the record for most winning years
Ok so from 2002 to 2017 he won at least 2 races a year that places him at 2nd with at least one win in consecutive years just being beat by kyle Busch who stole it away in 2020
Best driver for 2 straight decades
The 2000s jimmie had the most wins and championships during that time in the 2010s he is 3rd place in wins but has the most championships during that time and he is only 4 wins away from having the most wins during this time aswell
      Competition
He raced in the most competives era in nascar so far because during Richard petty lee petty and about half of dale sr era most teams had only 1 car SOME had 2 cars bit most only 1 jimmie raced in a era where teams had 3 4 5 competive cars per team not all drivers are super talented on the team but are talented enough and has a lot of speed under them to be competive. Teams like roush Joe Gibbs penskie Stewart hass Hendrick chip ganssi RCR. And the driver talent such as kevin Harvick Denny Hamlin kyle Busch kurt Busch brad joey logano mark martin dale jr jeff jeff Gordon matt kenseth Carl Edwards Tony Stewart Martin truex jr heck Ryan Newman kasey kahne jeff Burton and drivers early in his career the bobby Terry labonte dale jaret bill Elliot
      He did not need chad
In 2006 chad got suspended 4 races jimmie won 2 times had 3 top 5 and 4 top 10.in 2007 chad got suspended 6 times jimmie had 0 wins 3 top 5 4 top 10 to dnf while he running in the top 5
      Why the chase is harder
The chase is like super speed ways they are easy beacuse of the draft and wrecks but are harder because every one is basilcly equal if you make one simple mistake can take you out of conventions and you need to be perfect just like the chase every chase race is double is value like say the 14 race of the season a random race but say that random race is in the chase every one takes it serious and brings there fastest stuff and say there is 5 races left under the Winston unless rhw points are close they are just riding aorund. And if the points leader wrecks no big deal they will remain the point leader but under the chase they went from 1st to 10th 12th 16th
      More known stats
Jimmie won 5 straight championships under if you think about it harder format and still even if you make the chase therw are still 10 races to go and jimmie won 5 straight a 6th in 2013 and a record trying 7th in 2016 . he has the most wins at dover witch drivers say it is hard to drive and win just like bristol and Darlington
      What other drivers think
23 active drivers say jimmie is the goat out of 36 drivers. And jeff gordon yea that one said he is the goat he did not say dale sr who was one of his closes friends or him self or petty or Pearson he said jimmie as recently as 2020

Come on people...Jeff was being nice and a class act. Jimmie Johnson is not the greatest driver ever. One of the best, but there's no DOUBT that Gordon was way better, and Earnhardt and Petty and others were probably better too. Jimmie is one of the best, but his accomplishments have been quite inflated by the fact that he had a crew chief who dedicated 100% of his life to the race car (no one else does that) and points system changes that for years made it easier for him to win championships.

if we still had the old format, all of the drivers would've driven differently than they did with the Chase. Can't assume that Jeff would have 7 and Jimmie would have only 3 because of the way they would have to drive to win the Championship.

Jimmie is not the best and if it wasn't for Gordon switching crews when jimmies was not up to par Denny Hamlin would have won the chip and also if Carl and Joey didn't crash out he wouldn't have won that championship either if the they stayed in the old points system Gordon would have more titles that's a fact if they only reset points when the chase started Gordon always had a sizable lead but times have changed

Y’all need to get over the old system. That was over 14 years ago. Stop making excuses. The playoff makes it harder to win multiple championships. By your logic anyone from 2004 and up don’t have any championships. Gordon couldn’t win the new format. The old format you can dominate the first half of the season and just coast to the finish line and lock up the championship 6 races in advance. Today’s system you have to perform well to make the playoffs and even then you have to put together your best 10 races of the season to win. I don’t understand how you get this “old format” was harder to win in. I’d rather see close championship battles where multiple drivers have the chance at the end rather than 1-2 drivers with an outside chances to win.

    • @zzrs
      @zzrs 3 года назад +1

The Playoffs system was a greedy invention that tried to keep the championship going for as long as yearly possible so the ratings wouldn't stall during the NFL season (even though back when it was implemented NASCAR was as popular as it had ever been, occupying the spot of the 2nd most popular sport in the US), but it was ironically one of the biggest causes of NASCAR's demise. Not only it alienated fans, made drivers like Carl Edwards retire and transformed the sport into a fabricated corporate gimmick that started feeling as real as the WWE, but it costed it's fans and history a top notch story; which would've been Jeff Gordon becoming a 7 time champion and tying Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Richard Petty as the undisputed best drivers of the sport. The Playoffs format only got us drivers like Kyle Busch to become champions without even running the full season (I'm not even a Kyle Busch hater) and a very good driver like Jimmie Johnson to become an undeserving 7 time champion (still would be 3 time champion).

      @@davidphillips5590 jimmie is
      goat to me
He raced in 3 diffrent gen cars the 4 5 6 he is 6th all time in wins with the gen 4.
