Phenomenal video Scot! One of your best for sure. You can really tell just how passionate you are about both bands, and it is an absolute joy to watch you talk so highly and excitedly about both bands. I would go with Genesis personally only because I'm familiar with more of their discography, and no band has ever blown my mind quite as much, but I absolutely adore Yes as well.

Remember when I told that I need to get into Genesis more? Glad news... this week, I finally understood what it's about. After watching ilustrated version of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, I said to myself... I get it.
Also, "Apocalypse In 9/8" is probably the best moment in music history, and Nursery Cryme is one of the best albums in the history.

Another great show! Always great fun to talk about music you love, even if you are pitting one against the other here. For me, it’s a more clear win for Genesis, as they are my favorite. I love Yes as well, but Genesis’ top albums rank above all else for me. In your head to head album rankings, other than Yes Album over Nursery Cryme (and the first albums), I have Genesis winning every one of those. But great having you go through all aspects of these bands for comparison. Very cool, and I’m sure some hard choices had to be made.

Scot...I loved this one on one comparison. I side with Genesis as #1 although I heard Yes first and obsessed with Yes until one day just like you I heard my first Genesis album and it too was GENESIS LIVE! It was one of the best days of my life and most memorable too. I guess that also was the day Yes took a back seat to Genesis. One thing that struck me was that my first taste of Genesis was that the album was LIVE, and those Bass Pedals OMG I was in heaven, I'd never heard a live album sound so good it was mind blowing. I think that was the tipping of the scales for me. I stuck with Yes releases for awhile but unlike a lot of Yes fans after Tales I became disenchanted with Yes. Anyway Scot another great video, Keep em' comng. ✌✌

The period with Peter Gabriel was the best for Genesis by far. The two albums as a 4-piece are good, but not as good as the Gabriel years. After Hackett left Genesis became more of a pop band with prog overtones. IMHO the Trevor Rabin years with Yes, though very different, are outstanding. So for me Yes had more longterm consistency in terms of quality than Genesis did. But I agree with you that up until about 1976 the two bands were neck and neck.

Genesis, easily my favorite 70's prog band. Prefer Gabriel to Anderson as a vocalist, Wakeman is indeed a superior keyboardist to Banks but I definitely connect with Banks's progressions and melody writing more, prefer Collins to either Bruford or White as a drummer. The only two members I'd give to Yes are their guitarist and bassist. But musicians aside I just prefer Genesis's overall style and atmosphere a lot better, it's more impactful and emotionally fulfilling to me, always has been. Plus they're more consistent.

An impossible question. I completely agree with everything you said. There was a luncheonette about a mile from my house and they had those old table side mini jukeboxes one day I played the song Roundabout. Well I spent all my change for the next few months on that song. I kept asking my parents if we could go to luncheonette, at some point they realized I only wanted to go there for Roundabout. They finally bought me the fragile album. Then Yessongs came out and I played that to death. Then I went to see them in concert with Donovan, I was tripping and so Yes gets the nod for personal reasons. But yeah that budget Genesis live album got me too back then.

My first Yes concert was 1975, then the 1976, 1977, took some time off from the Air Force for a couple of weeks to see the revolving stage show in 79 in Milwaukee. These are also my favorite two bands, although I am a Rush fan to the max and saw them first in 1976 during the 2112 tour. I am a new subscriber. I wonder if we were at some of the same shows together, at least in the same arena as me and my friends back in the 70s would go to the Milwaukee shows and the Chicago shows, even though we were underage at the time. It was harder to get beer in Chicago because the law was 21 back then and Wisconsin was 18. Somebody at some arena was going to sell us some brewski. We just had to find the right guy.

I went down to the men's room to wash out my shirt and get back for the start of the show, when I ran into a security person that I knew. I told him my story and he gave me a free Yes T- shirt, and he took me behind the stage to see the crab nebula which was behind a curtain as you remember before the show. What a show. What a light show. I needed one of those crab nebulas in my basement party room or so the weed told me. Happy that you met Jon and the fantastic Patrick Moraz. I ended up meeting Jon years later before a show. Had a nice conversation and got a good picture out of it. Well, I will be reading and listening to more of your stuff. Take care. Jeffrey.

Excellent comparison! I am an outlier again in many ways. For Genesis, Trespass through W&W are top notch, can't beat, for me. For Yes, it is spotty. On their early disc's there are certain song's I love and others I could do without. Then comes Close to the Edge, which is magnificent, and Fragile which is really good. Next comes the lull. Tales and Relayer are not to my taste. Tales is melody-less and Relayer has that fusion feel that I don't like. My Yes favorites are the hated Tormato, Drama, and The Ladder. The three most recent disc's simply suck. For me, Genesis has the most consistent string of greatness. Trespass to W&W is shear magnificence! After that Genesis becomes spotty. Especially Duke and after there are songs here and there I like, but the rest I loathe! I agree with the band member comparisons mostly. The only difference would be Hackett over Howe, but it is close. Hackett is my all-time favorite guitarist. Both of these bands are in my pantheon of greats, and deservedly so! You ought to do more of these comparisons. It makes for great conversations.

Good stuff, though for me, the big difference is that the members of YES were all unique stylists on their instruments. They displayed their virtuosity within the song, as opposed to a lot of modern day prog bands where the song is just a vehicle show off their chops. The guys in Genesis were terrific players, but NOBODY sounds like Howe, and NOBODY sounds like Bruford, and NOBODY sounds like Squire and NOBODY sounds like Anderson and NOBODY sounds like Wakeman. At least not at the time. But their influence on musicians is monumentally widespread. I can't quite claim the same for the guys in Genesis.

Big Generator (1987) with Genesis (1983)
    90125 (1983) vs Abacab (1981)
Going For The One (1977) was compared with two albuns but
    Relayer (1974) was not compared.
Rick Wakeman maybe can be the greatest rock keyboardist of all times. A virtuose, precise, faster but I think Tony Banks was the musical base of Genesis Music and more estability, criativity and very far better composer. Your individual compositions for Genesis can t be matched by RW.

Excellent summation Scott, my two favourites as well & like you I lean a little more to Yes. Mainly because Yes have been the more adventurous & truer to their progressive roots throughout their career. And they always played a lot of their classic 70's material at every gig in every era. The opposite was the case with Genesis, from the start of the 80's the classic 70's material was limited to the in the cage medley & 1 or 2 others if you were lucky. That always frustrated me. I guess I love Yes 70% for their 70's material & 30% for what came after. With Genesis it's 90/10. A few more interesting differences, Yes had 6 keyboardists, Genesis had 1 who was also the main writer. Genesis consolidated to a 3 piece whereas Yes were always a 5 piece & sometimes a 6 piece. Could rattle on for hours but that'll do, cheers Bro!

@@TheProgCorner Yes wins 8 out of 10 on the album matchups, losing only Fragile (you know my problems with that, and it still barely loses to Foxtrot), and of course Tormato.
And my #2 band is ELP. They did Bartok, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Copland, Ginastera, etc., which appeals to my classical side (and of course, with The Nice, Emerson did some Sibelius, my co-#1 composer along with Haydn), but I think Yes still edges them out based on longevity and variety -- and the Rabin era helps them with this factor. And then there were three and Duke is OK. After that I rather listen to King Crimson or Yes 80's music.

Sorry Phil Collins is a more versatile drummer than bruford, just my opinion😊

He’s probably more versatile than any drummer not named Simon Phillips…

Two great bands but over their respective careers, Genesis were more progressive than Yes. While Yes generally remained faithful to the style they employed in their youth, Genesis moved with the times and with their ever progressing maturity.
This is not to say that I dislike yes. On the contrary I think their music is magnificent. But Genesis is my favourite.
From the first Genesis album right through to the last, each one is different from its predecessor showing the progression that Genesis employed.
