I bought the base and Maxed out versions of the 14 and 16” M2 MacBook Pro with my own money, so let’s get some answers.

Like many others, I was tossed between the 14” and 16” for a long time. I ended up with the 16”, and *it is not too heavy to carry in a backpack.* If anyone is worrying about this like I was; *do not worry.* Picking it up in the store and trying to get a feel of it is not enough - it does not compare to carrying it in a backpack. It like carrying a couple books, nothing more.
I do not regret the 16” one bit. However, I got the *base* M2 Max, which I do not recommend unless you know you’re going to use it. So far I haven’t, and I could’ve easily worked with a base M2 Pro, but I will, which is my excuse.
In terms of power, let me put it this way: If your passion is woodcarving, there’s no need to waste money on a chainsaw; If your passion is furniture making, then a chainsaw might help you process the wood a little quicker, but you’ll still technically be able to build furniture with a carving knife.
I will, however, recommend 1TB SSD and 32GB Unified Memory, prioritizing memory over the SSD.

Too often people think they want the 13“ Air or 14“ Pro, then they also get a 12,9“ iPad Pro and ask themself later why their notebook is too small for serious stuff and why their 12,9“ tablet is so unusable as tablet…
I was going thru 15,4“ and 17“ MacBook Pros, tried a 14“ windows convertible with pen (as 2in1 for university), and with a 10 year old MacBook Pro i just upgraded to the 16“ M1 Pro. Just the fact that a 2021 16“ MBP is smaller and lighter than 15,4“ models should be enough to realize that 15-16“ is still the king in universal usage (not too small like 13-14“, yet not too big as well like 17“+)

Got the 16” mbp base model. In store thought the 16” was too big compared to the 14” but having used it for the better part of two months I do not regret my purchase. I do however wish I got the 1tb storage instead. I’m by no means a “professional” but I find myself relying on an external ssd to store family photos/videos and edit off of it as well. For those that use their laptops on the plane on the tiny tray well more power to you I don’t know how you do it I personally just sleep on the plane 😅

CPU is not as important as people think -- you interact with a keyboard, trackpad, ports, and display; you only wait on the CPU. Unless the wait is outrageous, it's just not as important as what you look at and listen to and touch.

The 16' is heavy, but not too heavy to carry it around - for comparison, the Dell XPS 15 OLED wighs around 4.3 lbs. I frequently shift where I work from (Desk to couch to dining table) and having that extra real estate enures that I don't have to drag my external portable display around. If you have decided on the 16 inch, make sure you upgrade to 32GB and at least 1T. It is the sweet spot for most users, particularly programmers and creators and will ensure that your laptop will stand the test of time and all those MX series of chips to come. Also, you can always find an M1 Max, especially refurbished ones with the 32GB/1TB config in the 2K range, which is a good price knowing that an M2 14' with similar specs will run you several hundred dollars over. Compared to the 14inch, the 16 inch is more comfortable to use for extended periods due to the larger room to support the base of your palms. Also, get a GAN charger that can pump out 100W so you dont have to carry the brick around.

Was also looking at a ‘new’ 16” MacBook Pro w M1 chip (late 2021 model) on sale from B & H Photo for $300 less. That one had less CPU & less GPU, but was ‘new’. Did I screw up..should I have gotten the older model from B & H? Just felt more confident buying from Apple. B & H has a no return policy on MacBooks..seemed kind of shaky to me.

Hi! I know the question isn't directed at me but I hope you don't mind my input.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting properly refurbished devices and it opens opportunity to those who may not be able to purchase the device brand new. All refurbished means is that it was previously owned, repaired and tested to a certain standard. It has been used to a certain degree, therefore, the manufacturer has to label it as such and cannot charge full retail value. The fact you got it certified from Apple means you can rest assured it will be in top condition. I personally will always buy from a brand store or outlet for similar return/warranty policies.
Because that's what you're concerned about, you made the right call. Apple will also be able to help you easier because you purchased directly from them.

I am currently debating between a 16” M1 Max 32gb for $2499 or a 14” m2 pro 16gb for $1750. I can’t make up my mind. I love the screen, speakers and larger touchpad on the 16” - but I don’t love how cumbersome it is to carry around. I mostly use it at home but even trying to use it on my lap on the sofa or in bed is really uncomfortable. I love the form factor of the 14”, but the screen feels more cramped after using the 16”.
So… I dunno if anyone has any opinions or suggestions on what they’d do in my shoes but just wanted to vent and see if anyone could help steer me towards one or the other.
Realistically I won’t need all the m1 power and could probably get away with the lower RAM on the 14” model but I got such a great deal on the M1 Max that I don’t really mind if it’s over powered, as I hold onto my laptops typically for many years (I’m upgrading from a decade old asus).

16“ M1 Max, especially since you cant really use the 14“.
I had similar issues once…. 14“ model with 1TB SSD or 16“ base model with „just“ 16/512. As much i only would have needed a base M1, but 16/512 at least for a bit futureproofing the Air were not even considered (beside missing SD card slot etc)
I was going for the 16“. In my experience you only begin to miss some things the 14“ wont give you as well: touch, pen support, real mobility as with the netbooks called MacBook Air M1/M2.
What really proved me right about the 16“ decision (for serious work, multitasking etc) was the fact that with an iPad (prefferable the 11“ Air or Pro) you get just the „perfect“ laptop and the „perfect“ tablet, no need for an oversized tablet or a undersized notebook/laptop.

I personally will suggest 16 inch, and about the performance, will suggest the M1 Pro or m2 pro.
About the Size of it, as you are mostly work at home, let's say if you are on desk, then of course 16 inch will works better, unless you have a really small desk. And for on the lap, unless it is really uncomfortable, the height of 16 inch will comfort your neck.
But there are also another perspective, if you are the person mostly work on desk, you may want to get an external screen, which will give you 24-27 inch screen size, in that case, 14 inch can save you money and weight, this really depends on your personal need.
Oh, and by the way, if you really want a lightweight laptop, unless you really need m1/2 pro power, the m1 MacBook Air or m2 MacBook Air can be really sweet. And the rumors seems to indicate apple is working on a 15 inch MacBook Air, so if you don't need the power and can wait for a while, that one can also be really interesting to look at.
I personally had used 2015 MacBook Pro 15 inch and m1 MacBook Air, my next Mac will lean towards to 16 inch, as when I went back to my old 15 inch, even though that's a slow machine, but I quite enjoy the screen size.
Specification wise, as you mentioned, you don't need that much performance, so I would suggest you can wait for some good deals for M1 Pro 16 inch if you can wait, as there are a lot of chance those Macs will be on sale, even though it is not such a good price, but overall you will spend less money.
So overall it depends on if you have some emergency task to start work on right away (can you still wait for a while), how will you use it, they are both good machines.
Good luck and enjoy your life~

Run what you have until it annoys you or falls apart. Then get the absolute best you can afford, and run it until it also annoys you or falls apart. Give or take it being a target of theft, I would concentrate on screen and keyboard and touchpad quality over CPU. After 12 hours of staring at a screen, a bigger better one will prevent a lot of headaches, and that is worth more than CPU speed. For real speed applications, you'll be logging into a mainframe or cluster, anyway.
