- "Dark Beginnings" is a short fan-made film based on the Star Wars universe. It was filmed in one day in Rexburg, Idaho in Spring of 2002. All the special effects and post production were completed within three weeks of the principle shooting.
Editing was done in Adobe Premiere and the special effects, including the lightsabers, were mostly done in Adobe After Effects. 3D modeling and animation was done in 3D Studio Max.
Special effects, fight choreography and timing are awesome. Most impressive.
Thanks for the compliment on the effects! While Rory may have updated the music since we made this, I can as a fact confirm that all the effects were done in 2002 using 3ds Studio Max and After Effects (since I worked on 90% of the effects myself since this film was a final project for the school I attended for Animation).
you should get a real job, you are not some space wizard with a lazer wand, you are a human, unlike me, see this is where the humans get the galaxy mixed up, me and my family actually come from the real naboo in sectpr 4-1b, you nerd. :)
loved the video
that was my cousin youre a good dude keep up the good work
You guys did an EXCELLENT job with the special effects.
"The lightsaber is merely the tool of a jedi" A weapon is a weapon.
Amazing effects, camera shots, and jumps and very realistic lightsaber duels
Have you been smoking meth?
fyoukim1 no but you have
If your reality is that you think that had amazing effects, camera shots, and jumps and very realistic lightsaber duels and you haven't been smoking meth. Then I suggest you need to start taking it up. If it still looks good to you, then move straight to crack.
Not to bad, i think. It was actually very good done.
Location is not so bad, maybe they could practised the Fightscenes a bit more so that those look more fluid and a bit faster - but all in one it was a really nice Fanvideo.
1. Jedi do not kill. (not in that way)
2. His frien is dead. No emotion play.
3. Effects 9/10.
The entire whole weapon is made from plumbing supplies. The base with a metal pipe and a metal drain assembly screwed to the top of the base, to replicate the opening, then covered the entire base with a black pvc pipe which went around the metal nicely. The blade portion was a standard dowel which we shoved into a 3/4" white pvc pipe. We spray painted the pipe black and pink for filming to make it easier to see while editing.
Good job! Enjoyed it. Ignore the downers posting - it's always easier to criticize than to create. Which is why there are far too many lazy critics and far too few passionate creators.
You guys have some really good things going for you to make some fantastic stuff. Get into your characters more, let loose, and your videos will really gain ground on the stories!
Great job guys! Although this movie is a little old, its still awesome!
He gets a lightsaber through him and then just gets up and walks away? Not sure about that... but the choreography was great! Very believable. Great job on the effects as well!

this is one of the best starwars fanfilms i have seen great acting to the 2 sith annd brilliant to the jedi :) very entertaining
awesome implementation of the special effects.
Very nice movie, the location is perfect, also the lightsabers are perfect, i think you could work more on duels and force powers, but overall is amazing
This is incredibly well done.
Really very good overall. I think some of the timings need some work as in places people react to blows which haven't quite happened yet and it could be a little faster. Keep up the good work :)
brilliant video, don't know why everyone is complaining, its not like they could make a video like this
Guys don’t hate on this, he made this video and it might taken a long time to make it so don’t hate on this...
It's true; most sith do take on the red saber as symbolic. Though there are others who have had different colors, technically anakin used a blue light saber the only reason he stopped was because obi-wan took it from him Sith Lord Adas used a battle axe (not sure if that counts because it is pre-lightsaber times). When luke was serving apprenticeship to Palpatine. Palpatine wielded a trophy blue light saber.
Love it! Constructive criticism: acting good be a bit less rushed. Graphics, scene, background, fx, sound, music, dialogue, action was awesome. Well done!!
This was awesome!!
Video of the actual filming without the effects can be seen in the out-takes. You can find it from the same author of this video.
Excellent effort here, I was entertained.
These are some good special effects!
Great work on this
Leave these guys alone. They're having fun.
Nice location. Gotta say, you must have had your effects team working non-stop around the clock to finish the effects in three weeks. Unless of course some of the 3D models were designed in advanced and comped in after principle shooting.
Very good job on the lightsabers!
well when you are starting out sometimes you dont have the luxury of good actors. i think he did great with what he had to work with.
There are also Dark Jedi who use more then just red as their saber color. Sith only favor it because there is a small chance that a red crystal can short out other sabers.
very nice production
@DarkGhost058 Thanks for the compliments. The video is about 10 years old! For the time, i think we did a fantastic job on the effects, which is mainly why we made the video in the first place. Remaking it would be really fun, thanks for the suggestion!
Wowwww
I love how the sith guys know where the jedi are exactly after the drone shows them walking through the dunes, "oh there on THAT sand dune, ok" lol
and a probe isn't going to have a GPS or inertial location where it filmed the Jedi??
Fun fan film. I enjoyed the location in this....
I don't think there's ever been a Sith who utilized a yellow saber. The yellow crystal is used by and only by Jedi Sentinels and temple guards, along with orange crystals.
+Sandra Taylor Yes, but those sabers are often green or purple. And yes, I believe that hardly any Sith used yellow sabers. Just like few Jedi used red sabers.
Come to think of it, Asajj Ventress had one. But that was when she became a bounty hunter.
There are actually sects in the Jedi order (pre-empire era) where they used blasters, vibroblades, etc. They were called paladins. Some Jedi paladins even shunned the use of a lightsaber AND the force, for fear they'd become too reliant on them.
I love your punching sound effects...
loved it!
impresive
Why are there 3 sith, if always two there are?
(Note: possible spoilers in response) - The Clone Wars cartoon series did often show that the "rule of two" is not a hard fast rule, as sometimes the apprentices take on apprentices of their own (such as Asaj Ventress). And in the novel "Darth Plagueis", we see Palpatine already training Maul while his master, Plagueis, is still alive. I think the Sith "bend" the Rule of Two when it suits their goals, and I'm sure they view those "extra apprentices" as "expendable".
AND this was made in 2002, before the rule of two darth bane was released
There is something called a sith assasin
It's not apprentice
A sith apprentice is allowed to have a sith assasin as his aprecwntice as long as they don't break the rule of two
I liked the overall production. I didn't realise this was a 2010, but I enjoyed this. One thing though that I noticed: Sith with a yellow lightsaber? Yellow is a colour of the Jedi; a Jedi Sentinel... either way this was good :)
2002
Sith don't use red because it's a sith colour, they only use it because they can't get there hands on the real Kyber crystals, the planet that it is harvested on is controlled by the Rebublic, so they have to use artificial crystals makeing it a red saber :)
This was great. It looked better than the movies.
Yoda -"There's no doubt the mysterious warrior was a Sith."
"Always two there are. No more, no less. A Master and an apprentice.", there were 3 here...
The Sith use synthetic crystals, which are red because of the way they are made.. There's nothing stopping them using other colours, but red is the colour of synth crystals (they use them because they are more powerful than normal crystals)
return of the nerds
That tall sith sure does hop a lot.
He will be known as Darth Smallhopper.
well maybe his style was ataru
Some did. Not all Jedi chose a lightsaber as their weapon of choice, some wielded lightsaber variants such as the lightwhip, some used flails, some simply used force imbued staffs, and others just chose blasters, using the force to improve their accuracy and make them less predictable.
"Two there always are.... (accept for sometimes three or four there might be)" ~Yoda
Awesome fan film
Actually the quote is that lightsabers are a civilised weapon. "Your father's lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as random or as clumsy as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age."
Nice chorio fx and costumes! cool.
@DarkGhost058 there was more than one emperor in the star wars timeline.
such as the emperor in Kotor whom Revan discovered,
why woild u dislike it, they tryed their best its by far not the best possible but it was entertaining and wouldve been fun to make. its a bunch a guys having some fun?
For everyone commenting saying Jedi don't use blasters READ THIS!!!
It doesn't say anything anywhere in the code about weapons. Lightsabers are the traditional weapons of the Jedi, even though they have used other weapons from time to time.
There is nothing in the code that would prevent a Jedi from using any weapon they might want.
If in a life or death situation, where the lightsaber isn't reachable in time they can use a blaster if they want to. Either way, no its not against the jedi code to use blasters.
he's right if you have seen the kid tv show on disney xd star wars both esrough and the master both use blasters all the time so and obi won used a blaster to kill people in fact luke sky walker uses blasters too and they even some times use them to hide who they really are untell they need to show there jedi
Okay, Just to keep things strait, some jedi DO use blasters. Examples: Luke Skywalker, Kyle Katarn, Leia organa etc.
This is great!
Beautiful
that was EPIC !!! make more
Just here to relive my childhood wbu
actually in the starwars featuring general grevious, he hilled him with the blaster and stated the first quote
I loved it! You might want to add some sound effects such as when people get kicked or stabbed, but otherwise I loved it.
You guys do know the Rule of Two was broken in The Force Unleashed even if it's now canon. Vader took on an apprentice of his own while still having a Master. Rule of Two is not binding and can be broken by anyone if they choose to do so. Now whether they are found out is up to how sneaky they are. Rule of Two has been canon since the beginning. This is why books are necessary when they are available.
+x3VILBaconx So it is a loose rule, you can follow it if you wan to.
Also didn't darth bane say as long as you can keep the sith order small. Cuz a smaller order will make the warriors stronger.
Jedi don't use blasters
No.

Victor Luna obi wan used blasters to kill griveous
Kyle katarn use blaster-_-
@michael cooper -And I also have a DL 44- Blaster just like Han!
There were a number of Jedi using blasters :
Kyle Katarn,Jocasta Nu, Ezra Bridger and also Ezra’s master Kanan Jarrus used blasters many times, aso.
@michael cooper
when he did not have lightsaber in hand and the blaster was available
Wow he just lets the sith go. What a jedi!
Back then we used 3ds Studio Max, and Adobe After Effects.
*YOU GUYS ARE JUST HATING ON THIS BECUSE THE JEDIS HAS BLASTERS AND THE SITH DOES NOT HAVE A RED LIGHTSABER AND SAYING “THE FIGHT IS SLOW OMG SPEED IT UP DUDE!” NO HE CAN DO THIS ON RUclips AND YOU CAN’T SAY WHAT HE HAVE TO DO IN HES VIDEO!*
Guys, in the description it says that that this film was made 10 years ago. We are all married with kids and living our lives, pushing 30. We really don't even see each other that often anymore. What you see is what you get. 10 years ago. Watching it though, yeah the acting is pretty bad. :) We really only did one or two takes of everything, as we only had one day to shoot.
I realy liked the sparks you used for the stabings. Is there a tutorial I could see for that?
yellow lightsabers are used in Rebels(cartoon)
can u make an effects tutorial? would be awesome
Faster hits with the lightsaber battles and better acting and you will get a better rating, Keep it up guys. Practice makes perfect.
Alternate realities, are like, all the rage dude.
@gregsecrist I haven't seen this with the stabbing spark effects, they weren't in the original were they Greg?
I've always wondered how either side never hit their robes with their lightsabers...
It just seems weird since the sleeves and cape hang and move all the time.
Yellow sabers are for the guardians of the Jedi temple, so y does a sith have 1?
Slime Rush this was made before the new canon
Plus it's possible that the Dark Apprentice was relatively, newly fallen, and thus didn't have a red crystal yet.
In The Force Unleashed 2 DLC I guess, but that is an alternate reality, I see what you're saying though, she does have a connection to the force
Definitely Old Republic-era stuff.
@DarkGhost058 a yellow lightsaber is a darkside and aa lightside blade just like the black one
this kinda cool :) I like it
great film. loved it
So ths is 3 years ago and the potential was there... anything up-to-date? I think that all the mistakes are known to you now and I look forward to seeing the revamped version. :)
3:23 if you dont know the jedi have the rule to not kill an unnarmed enemy
vector 97 obi wan kill darth maul, anakin kill dooku
Darth Maul Wasn't Unarmed and Anakin *LITERALLY* Says that wasn't the Right thing to do
Also anakin was already becoming sith since his mother died!
there was a deleted scene that when dooku was fighting anakin he told him that he killed his mother which was true!!!
Btw how did you create the hovering bikes?
A very realistic film
That 360 noscope at 2.52
A very good effort.
Really good
Why were the jedi using blasters? Such weapons are uncivillized. Or are they suppose to be a kind of Jedi Sentinel I don't know about?
while I agree that it would be better if it was like any of the RvB or RvD, I would also like to point out that those take months if not years to choreograph and make. something simple can still be good it just needs to be made the right way. I love watching the RvD videos and the choreographed things that they do, but i do think that watching two people who have mastered combat skills and have more practical skills would be better because the combat is more instinctive and unpredictable.
Why does the Jedi have a blaster? Did you even think when you put that in?
Damn good, compered to most...
Muito Bom Mesmo...Brutal...Very good!!!
@simplyMASV A single Jedi thought of them as crude. Unless there's something in a book somewhere that I missed.
what program do you use to have the lightsaber effects? plz reply i want to make my own fanfic but I cant figure out ow to do lasers and stuff!!!
there is no sound when they kill
Nice video!
uh, two things I've never seen a jedi do: carry a gun, punch their enemy.
The effects are good but my biggest gripe is that Jedi's don't use blasters. "It's a lightsabre, the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as random or clumsy as a blaster".
Also where were the Jedi skills in detecting the probe that was only a few feet away?
