This song reminds me of my boyfriend. He stepped up to the plate and is helping me raise my first daughter (we're expecting another babygirl come January) even though he didn't have to and loves her as if she were his own flesh and blood. I'm so grateful to have this man in our lives.
I have read a lot of the comments about "Fathers" and this song touches my heart because, my Daddy died when he was 47... He was an awesome man, a Minister, I feel so cheated that he left our lives so soon.... and what speaks to me the most is when it says MOTHERS be good to your daughters too, you see, my Mother is so much closer to my Sister, I never have had that closeness with my Mother, and I asked one day, "Why have you always made such a difference between she and I..." the reply was, "Because, U never needed me, you've always been strong and had a mind set of determination, she needed me..." So, Ladies always remember, not matter how strong willed your children may be, they still need to know, that a Mothers LOVE is unconditional....
my condolences on your loss I've lost both my parents already but am lucky to be something of a parental figure to the younger ones in my life KEEP THE SPIRIT GOING CHEERS!!
Thank You for all the wonderful comments! It's so nice to see and read everyone's stories. I still do love this song! Thanks for all the views to!- theprettygirlswag97
This song is one of my favorites and it has such a deep meaning for me as someone who didn't grow up with a very present father figure. I was one of the lucky ones who had a really supportive family and that made his absence sting less. Regardless, this song is beautiful.
As a young girl abandoned by both parents and beginning relationships with guys, this is completely relevant. It's incredibly hard to love when you don't know what that feels like. Be good to your children. If you're not going to devote your life to them, don't have them.
This song always reminds me of my daughter, and our relationship. I raised her and her brothers on my own and am very close to all 4 of them. All grown now, 2 of them parents. But , I still the kid in them from time to time, and this song reminds me of the special bond I'm blessed to have with them...👍👍
This song is soooo deep, most people don't even realize it. Tough song, one of best, dare I say his best song. Talks about the cycle of life and how we should treat/see our children, but also how children should look at their parents. This song sends a very good message.
This makes me cry every time because my father was never really there for me. My mother was the one who raised my sisters and I. Even though my dad lived with us he never ever took care of us or wanted to be around us. When my parents got divorced he treated my mother like trash and he talked to me like I wasn't even his daughter. He was definitely a shitty father... but I forgive him. I'm 13 now and I feel like I have grown from the pain and heartache he cause my family and I. So I will continue to forgive him... because I know in my heart that he loves me. I love you dad.
Growing up, my mother absolutely loved this song. i remember clear as day being in the car and her singing it and smiling. When she passed, I couldn't bare to listen to this song and a few others because they were songs I associated with her. My father raised me and soon my stepmom. After a few years, I heard this song again. and realized how true it was. I am alot like my father. And over the years I have adopted habits from my mom. No matter how hard things get in parent/child relationships, most of the time the kid is still watching and learning. Forming habits that the won't realized they have until they are married and starting a family of their own.
I have a daughter, she's not mine biologically, she's 4 and a half now. I've raised her and called her mine since she was 5 months old. She calls me Daddy and she's my little princess... Always will be. But her Mom left me and took her with (of course) but my heart hurts so bad. It's a feeling of emptiness I've never felt in my life..the ultimate heart break. I miss her so much and I can't imagine how she feels without her Daddy. I dedicated this song to her on her first birthday. Can't stop listening to it. I love you Adrianna Rose forever as my own.
This was how me and my dad were. Then my sister was born and he treats me differently. Please don't let this happen to that sweetheart. Always be there for her.
I absolutely love this song. Honestly, I wish my dad would listen to this song. Ever since my mom passed and he found him a woman who's a drug addict, he's become another person. He chose her over his own kids and we've been through a lot of pain because of him. I actually envy the people who never knew their fathers because of how he is and, honestly, I don't think I could ever forgive him for all the pain and suffering he put me through because of her.
You did a good job with the video and lyrics...thanks! I love this song...the words are right on! So true about daughters and fathers, I lost my "Daddy" 14yrs ago this month and some days I still can't breath when I think about it! Also, I'm glad John Mayer added in something about us mothers too!!
I'm going to learn this song on the guitar and play it for my parents when I graduate or something because they've managed to take care of me through all the rough patches in life, like being broke, etc. And I'm so great ful for them ❤️ Also, this song makes me cry
The beauty of this song is that it's relatable to all. The moral of the story is be a good parent because it affects your children in ways you may not even realize.
i don't have a daughter, but i have a wife. My son and I are fortunate her parents raised her with lots of love. We are blessed to have a beautiful, caring, loving, funny wife and mother. We strive to raise our son the same way.
This song reminds me of my husband who lovingly stepped in to raise my little girl after her biological father passed away. She is now 24 yrs old and we both are so proud of her. She is the highlight of his life. Step dad's take good care of your stepdaughter's and they will return the love.
I have a contentious relationship right now with my daughter and I dedicate this song to her. I hope that she knows that I love her with every finer of my being.
I have always wanted kids but was basically denied that wish. My first wife's daughter and I still communicate and she always calls me "pop". That is so great.
to many this song is just a beautiful song but to me this song has so much meaning and i can relate to it john Mayer you sir are great indeed thank you although it made me tear i feel relieved
My Daughter would've been 3 today... Her and her Mother, My Wife, were on their way to come see me at work. And a damn truck wiped out the whole car. they died instantly. I miss them so much!! I haven't moved on and don't think I ever will.
so sorry to hear about your terrible loss Joseph. Keep moving buddy, your family wants you to be a survivor. As humans we are capable of remarkable things, healing is one of them. it will be tough, but its possible :)
This song was the song my dad and I danced to as the father daughter dance for my batmizvah. It's been 3 years. I don't even talk to him anymore.... :( I can't listen to this song without crying. I barely see him, and I pretty much extremely dislike him. But...just the memories...ugh... :(
I haven't seen my dad since I was 6. He attempted to kill me and my mother. He got taken to prison and I haven't seen him since. It's been hard growing up without a father, but I'll never be able to forgive him for what he did.
This song means so much to me coming from a broken home my parents got divorced when I was younger my dad treats me like crap and I my mom beat me and trying suicide multiple times and I was the only one who knew about it but I can only wish every one who has lost a parent or can't forgive one can.... I am so sorry to anyone who has I know the pain please know there is someone who cares and family is not just blood.
Not only fathers and mothers should be good to daughters. Sometimes trust issues in women have to do with the men they encounter outside their families...
song makes me cry although im a motger and have a son...my husband has custody and i cant be close to him cuz money is not there for me to be there for him in person :(
+Kay Daniels from one fatherless girl to the next, you did nothing wrong. It's his problem, and it always will be. One day he'll realize what he walked away from if he hasn't already. Just remember that no matter what you are good enough. Screw him. Much love :)
While i love this song i have to say i dont like where he says, " boys you can break.." this why men dont show emotions because they are supposed to be strong and told to be tough.. all feelings are valid... and yes, i know as a woman we definitely go threw more men shouldn't be made to feel less because they are men...motber of 2 boys

Blue Asshole marry this man
I have no idea why this song makes me cry every single time I hear it. Even in supermarkets
Oh! I know! Especially super markets! I'm just reduced to a sniffling mess.
Renee Stahlhut Me to .. I be in school listening to this and ill start tearing up then ill have to get it together. Makes me wonder and think hard.
YOU DO YOU JUST HAVE TO LOOK WHITH IN SIT ON IT FOR A BIT!!!... N Q... ?
Love that weird almost out-of-tune type sound during the intro. It's great.
Omg yass XD
Teh Pede it is not out of tune.... it i a blues chord on the guitar.... that is why it sounds like that.... happy helping you ! 😊

See I have the same issue with my mother, and she doesn't realize that even though I am the older sister I still need her.
+Arianna Gomez I can relate to that! Crying just yesterday about this problem.💔
Rev. Carla Cook I have the same problem with my mom
This song penetrates right to my heart. Lost my daddy in 2008. It still hurts.💔
my condolences on your loss I've lost both my parents already but am lucky to be something of a parental figure to the younger ones in my life KEEP THE SPIRIT GOING CHEERS!!
+Harvey Lee Thank you, so much for your kind words. I am also sorry for your loss. Keep up the good work, with the younger ones.🖒

One of the most beautiful songs I have heard. Without a doubt it is his best song.

"But she is just like a maze, where all of the walls continually change"
Yes.
I dont get it. Does it mean that her personality never stops changing or does it mean theres no end in behavior? Pls answer its for a project
I think it means that she constantly puts up emotional walls so she doesn't get hurt. But subsequently it keeps her from getting close to people
love this song
LOVE.
