    Impressive footage, as usual, now made even better with the upgraded equipment! Thank for showing us whats really going on in a way that no others have. The building operation at Oroville is truly massive in scale. Imagine all the workers and people in the community who might want a documentary of this colossal undertaking when it is finally completed. The footage just gets better and better as Juan adds to a collection documenting the Oroville spillway saga. His work will certainly be of immense value to anyone studying the history of this event. Thanks for these diligent efforts Juan, and I hope you inspire thousands of others to undertake the noble path of citizen journalism. Whether your are on the land, upon the seas, or in the sky, be blessed!

    Congratulations on the RUclips tier 3 club and the award from the flood districts. Well deserving Juan! When you head down to Long Beach/L.A. you should go to the You Tube studios there and do a walk through. They have everything and you have access to it all with your new tier status. I would definitely take advantage of it and it's cool to check out. Even us old guys can enjoy the new generation stuff and learn to use it to it's fullest. Cheers Juan, you deserve it!

      blancolirio yup, just need to make a reservation through email. Use the infomation you got from RUclips. I'm telling you it's pretty cool. It's part of the creator academy thing I thought. They can show you how to use all the video and sound equipment they have and what they recommend. Also you have access to use their studios for your channel. I think there's RUclips video's showing it.

      Well-deserved award. No one has done better coverage of Oroville than Juan, including major media outlets. His coverage shows the power of the Internet to allow citizen journalists to flourish, bypassing the big media gatekeepers who used to be able to decide what the news was.

    Hello Juan. I have watched every video in your Oroville series, with a genuine interest to learn from all of the problems and solutions, from my perspective of a designer/builder of dam networks. I commend you for your attention to detail. I have no doubt that your body of work will be studied by engineers for many decades.
    I love your down to earth presentation style. The occasional inclusion of your family and "Chewy", the dog, is a nice grounding touch. Congratulations on your outstanding work. I wish you continued success.

  • @marmaly

    Juan,
    Honesty, Integrity, Passion and Commitment have made you successful. No one can teach these things. Not even RUclips.
    What differentiates you from other channels is that you start with CONTENT - not razzle-dazzle. Many channels do the opposite. RUclips may teach you some editing tricks or encourage you to run contests, but these things are trivial. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the quality of your videos. It's your content and presentation that have earned you subscribers.
    30,000 subscribers is a HUGE accomplishment. 100K is an arbitrary number. It may or may not be realistic based on the subject matter you present. Don't use it to measure your success. What's important is that you enjoy what you are doing and that your efforts are recognized and appreciated by a growing number of subscribers.
    Cheers!

    Greetings Juan, from The Woodlands TX (near IAH)
    Visited Oroville as a kid - my dad's friend was one of the engineers on the project - so this has always had a place in my brain, as one of mankinds HUGE structures. You are doing an AWESOME job covering this, like nobody else could do (or even could think of!). I've been a CFI and flown J3's, but never a Luscombe - looks like a beautiful plane you have there. So - best wishes and keep up the GREAT work!.

    Congrats on another great, world-class, video on the progress at Oroville Dam, Juan !
    And another Congrats on the attention and award from RUclips !
    No one in I cannot remember how far back, has ever been able to bring this perfect level of coverage to something that was last year, a possible disaster to all of us who live south of the dam..
    You naturally have the perfect talents, intellect, awesome family, and the willingness to go so many extra miles for all of us..
    And work full time at the same time !!!
    I hope you know how grateful I am - we are - for all you do, and for your incredible, wonderful, family, that shares you with us.. Please thank them all for me..
    I just know that if I ran into you guys, you would be exactly the same wonderful, decent, people you have been on camera all these months, and it would be a great time for all..
    Hope and pray that all will go well for the Browne family up there and that our Lord will continue to Bless you and keep you all close to His Heart..

    I have a retired friend that was the head inspector for the concrete installation part of dams and canals in California. When I showed him a couple of your videos on Oroville all he could say was you were right on all the topics that you covered. I can see why they're giving you the award. See if a gas card comes with that award probably would be more useful than a plack on your wall.

    We needed a new update. Excellent work, thank you. While they are at it and have the RCC plant in place, they should roll some RCC on the lake side of the main spillway head structure so that in the event they have to drain down the lake again they can go all the way at full throttle without scrubbing the inlet.

    • @davide.burden2043
      @davide.burden2043 7 лет назад +1

      I was thinking the same thing. I hope the idea doesn't make too much sense, or they might not do it.
      Engineers are famous for always leaving part of the job unfinished, so they can come back and make money off of any project a second time. They sometimes even get three bites at the apple if you don't keep a good watch over them. They seem to think the money supply is endless, therefore the people who are paying for it need to rein them in sometimes.

    • @bingofoothill
      @bingofoothill 7 лет назад +3

      Juan noted that the lakeside ramp already has its scheduled upgrade next season. We might expect that the glitch of that unauthorized blasting damage on the upper spillway has resources more focused on contending with that extra work in order to meet their main deadlines. Juan noted that issue too.

    • @easternwoods4378
      @easternwoods4378 7 лет назад +4

      I'm an engineer and would do it just for safety. Normally once they get the lake level down they would throttle the outflow so that there is no scouring on the inlet side. They lost the ability to throttle because of the damage and a need to maintain a flow rate over the edge to prevent undercutting. That being said there is always the risk of having to drain the lake in a hurry to increase storage before a heavy rain.

    • @brianmyers5445
      @brianmyers5445 7 лет назад +5

      @ bingofoothill I think that ramp he mentioned is for access to the lake side of the headgate structure for scheduled maintenance on the headgates. I don't think Juan has mentioned anything about a plan to harden the floor of the inlet with concrete to mitigate scrubbing. But I may have missed that detail.

    • @joecasarez7062
      @joecasarez7062 7 лет назад +2

      Priorities #1: Make the existing spillway work by November 2017. 2nd Priority get the funding approved to finish Priority One. Priority 3 switch Priority 2 with Priority 1 Untill Priority 1 is complete. Priority 4 finsh Priority #1. Priority 5 Look for other improvements that need to be done. Priority #6 make funding available for other improvements. So, Rest assured all of the concrete plants will remain in place and operational for a couple of years at least. Because Priority #xx20 is funding the removal of the Concrete Plants. Expecially, if Priority 15 is build another concrete plant because DWR dosen't have enough conctrete to finish Priortiy 1-6.

    Another tremendously awesome video!
    As I watched this, I had a clarifying thought. Now that the RCC is high enough, they will lay it as they are, and build up flat all the way up through the plunge pool.
    This way, they won't ever have to be on a slope with the vehicles. As they continue up the hill, the width of the pour will widen and narrow as needed.
    Excellent engineering!

  • @daydreamingarts

    great photos! love all the info on the build. fascinating to me, as are all of your videos on this project. that camera is excellent. i hope that you don't loose some of your essential character in your effort to take your channel up a notch. your "voice" (as in an author's voice, an artist's voice) is a big part of the draw. you express yourself as a regular guy with knowledge of how things work and an enthusiasm for learning more about how things function. you brought us all along on your learning adventure and took seriously the responsibility you took on with the investigative reporting. your story telling structure is excellent. you always have well timed introductions, fade ins and outs. you summarize well. you are also very funny. i've seen some lovely youtube channels loose it as they wrongly packaged what they thought would improve their videos. congrats on the award! that's massive. (a little milenia speak sneaks in cuz i have 2 grown off spring who influence me now.)

    Great update, Juan. I think the main reason they added that new road to the back of the gate structure is not for inspections; it's because they lost their access to the upper spillway lay down area (where they are building forms, etc) when they did the 'unauthorized blasting'. They have a dirt access road to the lower end but they'll have to remove that to place the concrete There is a picture on the DWR picture gallery of a semi hauling a load through the gate structure.

    Congratulations on 31K subscribers! That's fantastic! You really deserve the accolades and positive attention you are receiving. I look forward to your uploads like no other. I am eagerly anticipating part 2 of your Catalina 22 "review." I hope it includes taking the family out on the water for an over nighter. It looks like a total blast!
    Edited to add: Take full advantage of 'RUclips School.' Those Millennials may do things differently than Gen Xers like us, but those folks were born knowing how to use computers in ways that mystify us. It might save you a lot of time and energy. Keep whatever works for you and file away the rest just in case it's useful later.
    I can't wait to see your fancy red RUclips button, but it takes them a *long* time to actually get it to you. I'll hope you get it in time for Christmas. Try to get to the RUclips Space when you get to L.A. or the one in the Bay area when you go there. It should be a good time with lots to see and do for a quality content creator like you.

    Thank you so much for the detailed look at construction that you can't see from the DWR cams. It's fun to watch the construction and your videos add so much perspective.
    Looking back to the DWR video from May 21 of start of demolition to where construction is now, and estimating progress towards Nov 1. Three months gone by and about 73 days until Nov 1. The progress to a usable spillway is looking like 20-30%. It will be very interesting to hear what DWR is projecting as the date for a usable spillway at the press conference next week. A good question will be, "Will the spillway be usable by Nov 1?".

      The apparent readiness of the SW can not be used to determine how long it will take to finish. It's about what has been completed and how this relates to the schedule. The prep work accomplished up until now was very labor and time-intensive. The remaining work is very straight-forward and is proceeding rapidly. Even faster as they gain experience. They are on track with the schedule.

    Congrats on your awards and I'm sure you'll improve your audio as well. I lived in Orovillenwhen you started or when I found you talking about the damn situation and I said then you were the only sane reporter on the topic. Now I live in Calavarez county mountains. Feels alot safer from some of the possible weather anomalies we are experiencing across the globe.
