- These videos were taken on two consecutive days in late june from cajon pass. 2 days, roundtrips, 12 hours a day. Just count the meets!! in a 24 hour period, i counted 53 Trains. Now, i didn't film everyone but im sharing the best ones. Enjoy Cajon Pass at its best! Trains232 Style...
This was by all means the best film on train that i've seen for a very long time
Bless you
Michel
Lo
It is because you get two subdivisions and two companies at the same place, and sometimes the same time. The BNSF Southern Transcon and the Cajon Subdivision along with the Union Pacific Mojave Subdivision both run Cajon Pass. The 3 and 4 lines of the Southwest Chief will run the BNSF Cajon Sub between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Thank You from Germany again. Very impressive pictures of the trains. And the countryside, too. At 5:00, that is a nice place to lay down for ever for trainspotters.
WHAT A HARD JOB TO STAND OVER THERE FOR SO LONG!
THANK YOU FOR THE EXCLUSIVE SHOTS, MAN!
I've seen this about 100 times now, and I STILL haven't seen it enough!
one of the best films i've seen here on youtube. beautiful!!
I am quite speechless. Wonderful montage, great shots and great sound. I love it!
Cajon Pass is incredible…so many great places to just sit, and so many trains!
I still think I like the Tehachapi Pass a little more. More shade trees for one. West Marcel and Bealville are cool spots.
Terrific! Love it.
Such clean ballast, looks like it gets tidied up every morning.
excellent overview of cajon pass. i really gotta hand it to you robert, your videos are very professional and truly a pleasure to watch.
Hello Trains232 Your vids over the Cajon are excellent. I have a buddy from the 101st Airborne living in Oregon. He sent me a couple of dvd's of cab rides over the Cajon. Your lineside vids are awesome. Really loved the two track films of 2 freight trains. You keep them them coming and this old Brit will keep watching. I was lucky enough to go coast to coast with AMTRAK in 2005. Please keep the vids on RUclips coming. from one happy old Brit. Para. twa1638
Awesome video man! That reverse move was interesting. At first I thought he was rolling backwards trying to start back up, then I saw your caption.
not to give you a big head, but your videos are definately some of the best on here, especially now that they are shot in HD. keep em coming!
REally awesome views, all that freight! This really seems to tell me what America's about.
Wow. LOL BNSF 4419 looks brand new! That's the cleanest BNSF Dash 9 that I've seen in awhile!
I'm not even a railfan of any sort and I loved it... mesmerizing. You've got a great eye for movement (especially the multi-train shots) and angles; I loved the sounds... Cajon pass, eh? Who knew?! Next time I drive through it I'll do so with a rather different set of eyes :-).
Props to you robert when you say cajon pass is one of the best places to railfan you ain't kidding! Awesome videos man!
Hi, just wanted to thank you for all the effort, comments and time you took assembling these videos for the benefit of the railroad fan community, these are great! Ciao, L (a Veteran railfan!)
Sweet! Looks like THE best model train set-up, ever.
Definitely on my short list of places to visit when I eventually make the trip to the States from Down Under. Great video, on my Favourites.
I used to love the Tehachapi Loo, lots of traffic, good weather and unique. Haven't been since 911, I'm not sure you can drive or walk next to the track or not anymore.
Excellent good video, mr Trains 232 .
Hello from a railfan in the Netherlands.
When whe gonna make a long trip through the U.S.A is this one of the points to see trains but when have more like the horse shoe curve and the Williams loop.
Greet from Zandvoort the Netherlands.
Vice nice job filming all these trains. Been through El Cajon Pass, in the past, once aboard the Amtrak train headed East, and then on a J B Hunt Transport 18-wheeler doing a C-to-C-to-C from Maine, to Florida, then onto California with two orders in the trailer for 1 company, it is the Mecca for train activity!
I just subscribed at the four minute 47 second mark you are filming a late running Amtrak southwest limited headed to LA I’ve been cleaning up that memorial if you go there now it’s a lot nicer
Thank You!
Nicely crafted film. Found sound is used well. Well done.
WOW. That's all I can say here. This is easily the best RR compilation effort I have seen in years. The composition is nothing short of outstanding and the exposure is spot on 100% of the time, not to mention the flawlessness of the editing. What are you editing/shooting on? This is some great stuff, I'll be checking out some more of your work for sure. Oh, and did I almost forget to mention the epicness of all of those meets???
Great video. My first encounter with the mighty Cajon was in April this year and next year I'm coming back for more. Well done, from New Zealand.
That's a cool area. I'm not much of a rail fan but for years me and a buddy used to camp regularly just inside the curve by the creek. Trains going by and around us all night would drive most people nuts but for us it was just atmosphere. Engineers would see our fire, radio it in to railroad security, they would roll on us and tell us to put it out and we would show them our fire permit and tell them to fuck off. The last 8 years or so they have had year round fire restrictions there so I never camp there anymore.
That whole area is a notorious hobo camp from back in the day. Lots of hobo artifacts around such as old hand blown discarded liquor bottles, old school tin cans. hobo stoves and hobo signs carved in in rocks and trees if you look for them. There's a weird camouflaged trough bolted to one of the monzonite rock formations there too that I never figured out. Basically a big steel urinal looking thing covered in chicken wire and stucco and made to look like the rest of the rock. It's positioned to collect rain water running off the rock. I'm not sure if hobos made it back in the day or if the railroad people used it for something. It was all full of silt the last time I was there.
The Pacific crest trail goes right through there. Good rabbit, quail and dove hunting there as well.
just love this area glad i live there in the desert witch is on the top of the pass there. seen many trains and ride Amtrak thought there.
Just a great piece of video! So much action! Great sound! Nice edits, too! FUN TO WATCH!
This place is on my bucket list, great video!
Hg
I love this! Where is cajon pass? this looks so fun! i could watch trains all day and it would be considered a TRAIN PARADE to me. My lemonade tastes so good with this video! I love how the white truck in the beginning of the video is driving down the tracks with the train, I know it was probably checking the tracks or something, But that's cute! :)
Your videos are definitely DVD quality! Amazing catches and superb shots.
I made my first visit to Cajon on March 15. Already planning on another trip from Connecticut.
The El Cajon Pass is one of the best location to film trains. It never gets old!!!!
great video.lots of meets.BNSF must like the GEVOs because i see alot of them in this video.
i really love the american trains and special the freight trains.is the most amazing in the world.greetings from switzerland
Amazing. Thanks for an insight into Cajon Pass operations.
Was that Chief with the Surfliner car late? Was that the #3 or #4. If it was late how late?
I think four of the best places I have railfanned are Weber Canyon (UP-Utah), Providence Hill (BNSF-Washington), Thompson/Fraser River Canyons (CN/CP-British Columbia), and the very unpopular, severely underrated Clover Bar Bridge (CN-Edmonton, Alberta). I love these areas because the trains are very frequent and the settings are really interesting. In addition, the trains in Canada are really lunch (up to more than 200 cars). I need to visit Cajon and Mojave though.
Congratulations on an Excellent video - I certainly appreciate not having to view each train in its entirety.
Keep up the good work.
From Down Under Colin E.
Cajon Pass is railfan's best photography spot.
Railfan is can watch to trains in near.
Great place. Almost looks like a model railway setup.
Pretty dern cool!! Many rolling tons of THANKS for posting this!
Great, superb video like those you usualy make.
what kind place is Cajon, and what makes it so special as your movie shows?
Is it a kind of hub for several railways. and this is the reason for such great activity?
Congratulations. It is always a pleasure to listen the footages you make.
Fera muito fera esse vídeo!!!!
i counted at least 26 freights-1 amtrack wow what a place to go train nuts-some spectacular long trains manifests car trains-coal-i dig this place
How did you get the Amtrak train on vid? If that's a Southwest Chief it must be runnig terribly late, they're supposed to pass through there late at night eastward and around 4 o'clock in the morning going west.
Some beautiful shots. Can you please say where Cajon Pass is? Also, what is a Coil Car please? And, have you ever jumped on one of these trains when it's running so slowly to get a free ride? Thanks!
Yeah, this was a great video with awesome filming locations. I, like the others commenting, need to visit to film.
Do they add helpers for going up the grade or is that just how the consist is?
Another masterpiece.
Been there many, many times over the years mostly shooting with still cameras--first 35mm slides then pro digital. I've seen a lot of changes what with triple-tracking on the BNSF and double-tracking the UP Palmdale line. Also, the railroad cops aren't as friendly after the derailment in '95 that killed two Santa Fe crewmen. I don't know how you got some of those shots because I've been chased out of some of those locations by BNSF's badge-happy rent-a-cops. Really nice job, I felt like I was there.
I have a question. I've noticed in videos that east coast trains use helper engines at the end of the train. West coast trains use helper engines somewhere in the middle of the consist. Is this true? Does it matter where helper engines are located in the consist?
This is a great place to rail fan because anywhere in the pass is good to view and there is endless action all the time
suberb indeed !! & what a spot !!!
Can u tell what was the white pick-up car on the tracks near 1,30 fr ??
thank again sharing
Trains, Feb 2014 issue has a good article, photos and map on train workings over the Pass.
amazing videos ilove the dinamic brake
Yeah, those grades are a walk in the park compared to the Saluda Grade and Tennessee Pass, though! LOL (R.I.P TP and SG!) But yeah, the amount of traffic is close to what my local UP lines usually get every other day!
Awesome filming. Living up here in Canada the only good places to railfan are out west in British Columbia and Alberta. Rogers Pass and Kicking Horse pass and all those places. I hear that they are good places to railfan. But I could be wrong, so correct me if thats the case.
Lemme ask, that location toward the beginning of this video (0:30-ish) at the, I suppose "back side" of Sullivan Curve... According to Google, it looks like you take something called Pacific Crest Trail off of Forest Rte 3N49, which eventually leads back to Swarthout Canyon Road. Is that location honestly that bad to get to, or does it look better in person? Is the Pacific Crest Trail part vehicle friendly, or is it hiking only???
+mcresq65 No vehicles on PCT. Literally only a couple feet wide. The spot behind Sullivans, you have to take the UP ROW in from either the east or west.
another excellent video!
Cajon Pass is cool again! It was terrible in early 2010, but the traffic has definitely picked up in the last 18 months.
What type of heat an air system does those trains have
Very good video
A truly beautiful video. I'm proud to share space on RUclips with you lol.
2.2% and 3% grades? Try the Tennessee Pass! LOL (Just kidding! I love just about every railroad pass here in the US!)
Great video! What kind of camera are you using?
Great video, thanks for your nice work.
Very Impressive
video .Great
Liked the way you altered your perspecitive to keep the video interesting.
Great video, well done!
Any ideas on why the BNSF 4419(? engine number?) had to reverse at Cajon summit?
is the pulling power of 4 locos greater than 4 separate locos pulling one quarter of the trucks?
Fantastic video..........What happened with the 4419?
I feel for those locomotives steep grades and hot weather probably 20 cars per unit pulling those cars ?
Awesome video
very great video!
gorgeous photography btw! what were you using to shoot?
Bel video complimenti
grate vid man.
How often do trains pass by?
Having discovered today this magnificent video turns me absolutely anxious to receive the Ho model of yellow letters BNSF GE ES44dc that I bought last week on EBay !
looks busy ,how many trains per hr ?
Great video!
That was about the late 1970s if I'm not mistaken, right?
I'd love to know where these were taken. I'd love to go see myself, but I also would like to know where I can go and stay out of trouble.
Ted Thompson Sir if you ever go look up hill 582 A beautiful place to watch trains you would need a high clearance vehicle to get to it there are other places in Cajon Pass off Highway 66 where you can see the trains I go there all the time I have an old CJ seven Jeep that I go back there I enjoy Sullivan’s curve also summit is a nice place to hang out
How come they don't put cabooses on the ends of trains anymore? When I was a kid...that was the most thrilling part of the train as well as the engines! We would go bannanas to see the caboose! Again...why do they not have cabooses anymore? BRING EM BACK!!!
3:12 Is that the Swarthout Canyon Rd crossing?
no
I was about to forget:
Long living Vegas Pro!!
I can't imagine the amount of fuel those ac44 use on a daily basis.
much less fuel than all the trucks it would require to haul the same tonnage
1:30 felt like the film unstoppable :)...
Which Amtrak train was this?
Westbound Southwest Limited
Looks like GE has taken over Cajon!
jGreat stuff! Where are the 'helpers' cut in?
Helpers are no longer cut in every thing is DPU
why the reverse move? great vid as always
That UP coal train is it for export? Nice video
Yes it’s going to the port of Long Beach
Nice video...
1:14 Weird pickup truck lol
I wanta see someday
