There is suspense. Keep a level head and keep your finger on the button.

Lol, Hap asking us to call Western Union "by number!" That must've been exciting. Kinda like finally getting a smartphone and being able to access the internet or something! I love these old shows, esp the ones during wartime. I've heard many instances of "listen at ___PM War Time..." Also the PSAs about War Bonds etc. Really makes one pause to think on how this county USED to run. We actually PROFITED from war instead of "just" killing people. I digress. Love the feel of these old shows and to anyone named Hap, hi! 👱

Part of the lost history about the war bonds is that when the Congress declared war, they also set a condition on Roosevelt (and later, Truman) that they had to fund the war with taxes and/or bonds. Congress was trying to make it a pay-as-you-go type deal, hoping to keep profiteering to a minimum. Plus, we were still on the gold standard at that time and nobody in Congress wanted the government to have to send away all our gold to pay for war debts. So war bonds were supposed to prevent that from happening and were also supposed to prevent runaway inflation during and after the war. Kind of cool to hear the stars of the day throwing their support behind the boys from home.

Suspense is definitely in my top five but not number one. I would give that distinction to x minus 1!
