In my ever so humble opinion, I believe that before a proposal takes place the topic of marriage should be discussed. Because even if the woman sees a future with the guy she may not be ready for that final step as yet. Discussing marriage gives you the chance to get a feel of what the other party is feeling/thinking. I was engaged once as well and ended up calling it off because I felt pressured into saying yes. No matter how much of a future you see with someone if you're not ready for something YOu're Not Ready simple!
What matters more for me is if the design/pattern of the ring and the type of gemstone describes my personality. It shows how well or less you know me.
I feel like before you propose, you need to have discussions about marriage with your partner and make sure you guys are on the same page, because you can't just propose out of nowhere and expect her to say yes when you guys haven't discussed it properly. I'm not saying let her know you're going to propose, but just make sure she is ready for marriage before anything
