Shabab the Kabab sorry, i meant some live-action projects but animation cinematography because there are a few films that did some shots of hand-held motion, but I would like to do that throughout a film in order to win Best Cinematography from the BAFTA Awards.
As long as I'm at least in the #10 spot I'm good, this is my career, a scary and risky choice that I will not turn away from, I will be the best at this, I will focus, I will not maybe earn that much money at first, I will probably earn no money at all in my first years and no one knows maybe in more years after that, I won't do this for the money I will do it for the art of cinematography cause I've always loved films, since I was 3, but I will make it to the top
I'm more than a little offended that Robert Yeoman wasn't on this list. His cinematography is what really brings Wes Anderson films into their surreal, symmetric beauty
Master Le Actually no. Lubeski won his third Oscar on February/March of 2016, and this video was published on June of 2016. I don't think WatchMojo makes videos two months before being published.

watchmojo is so dumb. they put The Revenant picture to thumbnail and didn't mention it in the video, for which Emmanuel Lubezki won his 3rd consecutive oscar, not 2.
Where the hell is Sven Nykvist??? ...he was one of the most important and inspirational cinematographers for both American and European films, known for his frequent collaboration with Ingmar Bergman. He used a variety of natural lighting schemes both for black-and-white and color. As from a bio on him: "Nykvist used light to create mood and, more significantly, to bring out the natural flesh tones in the human face so that the emotion of the scene could be played out on the face without the light becoming intrusive."
Let me introduce you to John Alcott's work (Barry Lyndon, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange). You've clearly never heard of him. You should also look into the work of Freddie Young (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter). Also, 1st and 2nd should be flip-flopped. Chivo (Lubezki) has already managed to far outshine Deakins in just the last few years, garnering THREE Oscars in a row.
Vittorio Storaro should have been mentioned! He won 3 deserved Oscars for Apocalypse Now, Reds and The Last Emperor. Another big missing is Conrad L. Hall (R.I.P.), he's also been a winner of 3 Academy Awards for Butch Cassidy, American Beauty and Road to Perdition (his last work before his death, the Oscar was posthumous).
They information is wrong with Lubezki. He has one THREE Academy Awards back-to-back-to-back. Gravity, Birdman and now The Revenant. All undoubtedly deserving.
That Lubezki Fellow is unreal! The revenant, bird man all great films. Just watched The Tree of Life and came to find out he did that too! Hope he continues making more and more!
It's too bad Roger Deakins has never won an Oscar. Hell, "Fargo" really is one of the best photographed films I've ever seen (I believe "The English Patient" won the award that year).
This video should have a lot more views to be honest, as an aspiring film-maker myself.. I know how hard a DOP and his team work to create the visuals that we eventually see on screen... so the average cinema lover should show a lot more love... to people who work behind the scenes.
as was already mentioned below, Emmanuel Lubezki won three Oscars in a row and actually I'm wondering why there is a picture from The Revenant in the thumbnail of the movie but no reference to the film (and Lubezki's third Oscar win) in the video itself...
To me, Emmanuel Lubezki shoots for the awards with his breathtaking imagery and "creativity", where as Roger Deakins shoots for the narrative, subtle, efficient and simply beautiful. As in film as a whole, everything should serve and enhance the narrative - story and character. Roger Deakins deserves the top spot. Good Job, WatchMojo!
For any and all cinematography lovers, you should check the legendary 1979 Russian movie "Stalker". If you love any of the above movies mentioned in this video, I highly recommend you to watch Stalker. It is deep, dark and surreal in cinematography beauty.
And Greg Toland, and Freddie Young, who both should have easily been in the top five. Toland whose magnum opus is a little film called CITIZEN KANE, and Freddie Young who did Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and Ryan's Daughter, to name a few. Both are infinitely better than Libatique or Doyle.
My List: 10. Gordon Willis 9. Hoyte van Hoytema 8. Conrad L. Hall 7. Vittorio Storaro 6. Bruno Delbonnel 5. Janusz Kaminski 4. Robert Elswit 3. Robert Richardson 2. Roger Deakins 1. Emmanuel Lubezki

10:30 "[Emmanuel Lubezki] took home Academy Awards two years in a row." *Really? The 88th Academy Awards have already happened, WatchMojo. Are you sure that number is still only two?*
You Know Lubezki won 3 Oscars in a row? For Gravity, Birdman and this year for the Revenant. C`mon the Revenant is already in the thumbnail all you had to do was google.
What about Vittorio Stararo? He shot such beautiful films as Apocalypse Now, Dick Tracy, The Conformist, Reds, The Last Emperor, and Last Tango in Paris. Roger Deakins is great and all, but I would choose Stararo for number one in a heartbeat.
He won 3 Oscars for Apocalypse Now, Reds, and The Last Emperor and shot excellent classics like Dick Tracy and The Conformist, which the latter is his best.
Another honorable mention: Leon Shamroy. He won 4 Oscars for best cinematography including the Liz Taylor epic "Cleopatra" (1963). Other films he did include "The King and I" (1956), "South Pacific" (1958), and "The Agony and the Ecstasy" (1965).
So many not even mentioned: Vilmos Zsigmond, Geoffrey Unsworth, Douglas Slocombe, John Alcott, Dean Cundey, Leon Shamroy, Freddie Young, Gilbert Taylor, Conrad Hall, William Fraker, John Alonzo, Laszlo Kovacs, Ted Moore, Andrew Lesnie, Ernest Laszlo, Haskell Wexler, Michael Balhaus, Alan Daviau.... They should probably do a Part 2. And no way should Gordon Willis NOT be in the Top 3!

Cinematographers are criminally underrated in Hollywood
No, stunt coordinators are.
Cinematographers should be revered in Hollywood. Any actor that downplays the DP is an idiot.
They are real heroes behind the scenes
Not only Cinematographers but Stunt coordinators too and not only in Hollywood but in every movie industry around the World.
One day, I will be one of those greatest cinematographers of all time.

YES!!
I watched this video specifically to see Robert yeoman and I'm quite disappointed that he wasn't on it. not even in the house or able mentions
exactly, i was skipping all the guys on this list just hoping to find him!
And WatchMojo has like a hard on for Wes Anderson's movies too :\
Roger Deakins was the first person to come to mind. Sicario and Prisoners blew me away.

Connor Webb he is in Blade runner 2
robert daniel thats what i mean. The trailer for it.
robert daniel Skyfall, too.
Emanuel Lubezki won 3 times in a row, not twice.
Ever wonder if they did that video before the third Oscar? Gets you thinking
Well this video came out in June, the Oscars was in February so I'd hope it doesn't take them more than 4 months to craft a RUclips vid.
Chance Cooke true
@@watsupchava3252 lol

True, with John Alcott being at #9999...
Reckall hahaha
Lol
Reckall john alcott, definitely. My all time fvrt.
'[insert cinematographer] used light and shadow to create beautiful images'
Wow great analysis there watchmojo, really insightful.
They obviously just went to a list on like reddit or something and basically copy-pasted.
This list is missing way too many cinematographers.
My fav is also not here!Hitchcock!
bernhardtsen74 Hitchcock is a director, not a cinematographer.
I am pretty sure he helped his cinematographers !
Georgy Rerberg
That doesn't make him one. He doesn't have a single cinematography credit, though we all know he's one of the greatest directors ever.
So you preproduced this video last year, or what?
No mention of Lubezkis 3rd Oscar and not a single frame of the Revenant (except for the thumbnail)?
Deakins is the "used-to-be" DiCaprio of Cinematography.
Emmanuel Lubezki won 3 oscars in a row get your shit together WatchMojo
As much as I LOVE Lubezki, Deakins has been nominated 13 times by the Academy.
Harambe pretty sure that is came out before the Oscars?

I don't think WatchMojo makes videos two months before being published.
Also, the thumbnail is a shot from The Revenant. Like, dude.
um, Lubezki won 3 Oscars in a row, not 2. He win this year for Revenant.
Skyfall cinematography is gorgeous.
Gabriel Cerrato ....Roger deakins also did Shawshank redemption
Gabriel Cerrato it is, indeed. and it has my favorite intro out of all bond films.
Becky Downey I loved that movie.
Lubezki won 3 years in a row, Watchmojo being stupid as usual
the revenant really blew me away with its cinematography!
And the ironic part is that The Revenant is the thumbnail XD

Come one WatchMojo! Lubezki has won 3 academy awards in a row!
watchmojo is so dumb. they put The Revenant picture to thumbnail and didn't mention it in the video, for which Emmanuel Lubezki won his 3rd consecutive oscar, not 2.
Kaminski's camerawork in the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan remains the most gripping cinematography I've ever seen in film.

The Revenant was one of the most beautifully shot movies i've ever seen. He really encapsulates nature with his natural sunlight/moonlight.
Only if you never saw the movies he's done for Terrence Malick.
Will C I enjoyed Days of Heaven's and The Thin Red Line's cinematography. But in the 70s, I thought Gordon Willis' work was the best in the decade.
+Sitizen Kane tree of life is brilliant
tree of life is the best, nothing comes close
Vittorio Storaro isn't even on this list.
Or Sven Nykvist
like what the hell, how could they ever miss Last Tango In Paris or Apocalypse Now

Emmanuel Lubezki won 3 years in a row
How could they forget The Revenant? :/
Maybe they made the video before the Oscars ?
would be highly unlikely
It's even in the thumbnail, I can't believe it.
The Revenant in my opinion was BEUTIFUL to look at, but the plot was crappy.
Emmanuel Lubezki won 3 years in a row ... Did you forget he did The Revenant too?
Vittorio Storaro should have been mentioned! He won 3 deserved Oscars for Apocalypse Now, Reds and The Last Emperor.
Another big missing is Conrad L. Hall (R.I.P.), he's also been a winner of 3 Academy Awards for Butch Cassidy, American Beauty and Road to Perdition (his last work before his death, the Oscar was posthumous).
I agree with you. And about Conrad L hall , well he is the greatest cinematographer ever lived in the history of Cinema.
i thought storaro who won oscar twice for apocalypse now and the last emperor deserves a place..
right? The Conformist has some of the best cinematography ever in my opinion
piyush sharma he also won for Reds
piyush sharma for some reason i thought he was the same cinematographer as Godfather. But yeah i agree
