- Hello!
In this episode (actually it's a "one take" video) I show you around the engine room and mechinical space of our 2024 Helmsman Trawlers 38E.
At the time of this video we are about three weeks into our ownership journey and about 10 days into our repositioning trip from Charleston, SC to NYC!
Don't forget - any questions, please reach out to me.
Cheers,

Loved the tour, made the engine room less overwhelming. It would be awesome to see a video of you performing your pre-cruise checklist and eventually routine maintenance.
You read my mind.. that is among the content slated in the coming week or two! Thanks for the comment and viewing the channel, Justin!
Good job explaining the systems
Glad it was helpful!
Really informative tour of this great engine space.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment!
I really like this boat it’s the perfect size for the great loop. Congratulations 😊
It’s a great Great Loop boat for sure. So comfortable, many places to hang aboard and very responsive around locks, marinas and rivers.
Great engine room !! Love the "rainbows and dives" !!😅
Thanks for the view and for the comment! Watch out for those rainbows that pour out of the engine rooms aboard our trawlers!
Greg, thank you for putting this detailed of a video out. I really enjoy them
My pleasure, Casey! Leaving Cape May, NJ in the morning!
Happy for you I hope you many years of happiness
Thank you for the comment!
Great videos! What is the engine size?
Cummins 380hp is what I have and is the standard engine in the 38E. It’s so reliable and a pleasure to turn on each time.
Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the videos. How do you switch from lower station to upper station?
Thanks for the question! So there are controls in the pilothouse and above at the flybridge. You simply put the engine in neutral propulsion, and if safe to move, relocate to the other helm location. Once you are ready to get underway (and to gain control at the new helm location) you simply hit the "active" button twice (2x) and you can control and can proceed.
Just remember: Neutral, move to next location, active/active and away you go!
Greg
Thanks for the quick reply. Hope to see you when you get to the keys.
Super torn... single engine vs twin... twin would be ideal for more ocean going trips.. but single would be fine for looping.
I think everyone has wrestled with this decision.. perhaps a select few have gone into their purchasing journey not having to worry about single vs. double.
There are so many videos, forums, content out there to help you, plus talk to other owners.
In the end: What is your intended mission / journey? I don't have the risk appetite to cross oceans, but I do like coastal cruising and island hopping in the Bahamas..
To me, servicing well a single engine (like Cummins) vs. the obligation of two engines (repairs, checks, etc) + having an "insurance" policy in Boat US or Seatow (just in case) felt good to me.
So much more to sort through, but for now - it comes down to personal pref and the missions you take. Good luck!
Thanks..
@@HelmsmanHangout thanks for the comment.. appreciate your insight.. plus the cummins is super reliable.
