  • In this video, we'll take a look at the Long Island Railroad. The focus will be on the lines that run on the north side of the island. We will see electrically powered multiple unit cars as well as the dual mode DE30AC locomotives pulling trains and even a brief view of a work train. All aboard!

    Here's some history about the LIRR EMD DE30ACs and the EMD DM30ACs as well as the Kawasaki C3 bi-level coaches.
    The Kawasaki C3 bi-level coaches: They were introduced in 1997 to replace the old C1 bi-level coaches. 23 were converted to C3 Cab Cars for push-pull service. The numbers were #5001-5023 when delivered. All came equipped with two chime Leslie RS2Ms.
    The EMD DE30AC: They were introduced in 1998. LIRR ordered 23 units which were #400-422 when first delivered.
    DE: Diesel Electric
    30: 3,000 horsepower
    AC: Alternating Current
    The EMD DM30AC: They were introduced in 1999 to run alongside the DE30ACs. LIRR ordered the same number of units but they were #500-522 when delivered. It is kinda similar to Amtrak's and Metro North's GE P32AC-DMs.
    DM: Dual Mode (can go from diesel operation to third rail operation since it has third rail pickup shoes)
    30: 3,000 horsepower
    AC: Alternating Current
    LIRR's DE30ACs and DM30ACs replaced the aging EMD GP38-2s, the passenger serviced EMD MP15ACs, the EMD FL9s, and the ALCo FAs. They first had their horns on the roofs but were later moved to above the cabs. Most locomotives came equipped with Nathan K5LLs. Others came equipped with K5LAs and K5LLAs.
    Of the 46 locomotives LIRR has on their roster, 45 are still in use. The one that was taken out of service was DM30AC #503, which was damaged in an accident in Huntington, New York on October 23, 2000. It hit a shopping cart on the tracks, in which the shopping cart shorted out the third rail while being dragged down the tracks, causing #503 to catch fire. There were no injuries or deaths in the accident. However, #503 was so damaged that it would cost LIRR way too much money to fix it. For over 17 years, it sat in LIRR's Morris Park Facility being stripped for spare parts. In July 2018, #503 was scrapped.
    Also, in 2013, DM30AC #507 suffered an electrical cabinet failure, but LIRR couldn't lose another locomotive after what happened with #503. It was saved by having its third rail pickup shoes removed, being converted to a DE30AC, was renumbered to #423, and returned to service.
    Despite the two incidents, the locomotives are still very reliable and still operate as of 2019.
    I hope you return to Long Island soon! This was a great video!

    Very interesting. The LIRR is a fascinating operation. EMUs and DE30s with great horns. Back in the 80s and 90s, they used to use switchers top 'n tail on commuter sets. Never a dull era on the Island. Great post!

    Curious fact: The LIRR once was propety of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Steam locomotives of the PRR ran in the Long Island Rail Road, and even the logo of the LIRR was a modification of the PRR's logo, with the reporting mark of the Long Island Rail Road instead of the Pennsylvania RR!!!!!

      Thank you! From what I have seen now, the LIRR is a pretty hard railroad to photograph. A lot of tight clearances, so it's hard to get a really nice, unobstructed view. I worked around it as much as I could and I am happy with the results.

    It sounds like the DE30AC's use a special Variant of the K5LA and K5HL!
    The signle car EMUs sound like those on the LA Metrolink and many export locomotives!
    The cab car horns sound a lot like the horns on the Indian Railways WDG4 locomotives! Especially at 3:40!

    • @CoasterFan2105
      @CoasterFan2105  6 лет назад +3

      You are correct. The DE30s use an assortment of K5LAs, K5LLs. and K5LLAs. The cab cars and EMUs use two chime Leslie RS2Ms.

    • @five0fan
      @five0fan 6 лет назад +5

      The cabcars use a Nathan K13B; it plays the same notes as an RS2M would. The cabcars were originally delivered with RS2Ms, but didn’t do well on solenoids; they were replaced by the K13Bs.

    Don't understand why the DE30ACs and the C3's aren't used on Metro-North. The Harlem Line in particular could've used this setup because of how short the platforms are at most of their stations between North White Plains and Southeast.
