- These fly-tippers got stuck at a council country park in #Hampshire...
They claim they "broke down" and now they are asking for their van back. "Should the council prosecute them and crush it - or give it back?" asks ClearWaste.com founder Martin Montague.
"This fly-tipper obviously thought he could get away with dumping this load of rubbish on land at Queen Elizabeth Country Park leaving us taxpayers with the clear-up bill.
"We get hundreds of reports of fly-tipping on our app every day and giving people alternatives than using dodgy unlicensed traders they find on social media will help to stop lots of incidents of fly-tipping.
"There is clearly an increasing demand for legal waste removal so we are now helping to link consumers with trustworthy, government-registered waste removal businesses and avoid fly-tippers.

Certainly not crush it ,reregister it and sell it on to a legitimate business .and let the profit be used to combat this type of crime .
@chris murphy Council could claim it, they use these vans for emptying bins on the street, clearing other fly tip sites, clearing trees, loads of other uses, it is a waste just to crush it to make a point. Unfortunately its not as simple for the council to take ownership of it so it will likely be crushed.

That's not the way to do it. First of all, DVLA will spend ages cancelling V5 and transferring to a new issue. The vehicle will likely end up parked in a yard for months. Once the new V5 has been issued, the vehicle must be repaired prior to a MOT. This kind of vehicles are often not roadworthy, but on purpose expendable. So getting them roadworthy for MOT will be costly.
Given the ancient vehicle is approved at MOT, this leave us at this point :
Months has gone, office work undertaken with DVLA & garage & MOT tester, mechanic has been paid, spare parts have been paid etc. And what have we got : An old wreck of a van, which we now have been spending more money on than it can be sold for. A grotty vehicle which nobody will want to buy, unless they are flytippers who can buy the van for beer money.

@chris murphy Fly tippers can buy trucks anywhere. To stop them you'd have to crush every truck on sale.

They wouldn't gain much more selling those clapped out bangers at an auction than they get when selling the vehicles as scrap. A working diesel engine is surprisingly valuable.
Like your thinking. Don't forget to track down the owners and fine them to the max first, and then use that money to help clean up after these criminals.

Sell it at auction - while they're in prison. It's not clapped-out, it would get a few £k at auction.
get them to dispose the rubbish properly, fine them, sell the van and use the funds to combat fly tipping. Councils art too soft and don’t appear to be a deterrent

i agree, Mr Lightfoot. THEY LEARN, (and hopefully remember ! ) and others' dumping, gets cleaned up, paid for. The proverbial, ''double win ''.

Don't crush it. Tag the culprits and give them community service. Every time someone fly-tips in the area, for a year, these culprits have to clear it up. Any time they should fail, the van gets crushed.

Fines don't work for people like this since they can claim their on benefits and only have to pay 50 pence a week from their benefits, no point. A sentence is the only way forward.

Crush the van and all the waste into a 2 ton metal cube. Then deposit the metal cube on to the owner's land. Preferably dropped onto the roof by Chinnock so it becomes an abstract art piece on the roof as a reminder.

Sadly a lot of this happens on private land and the cost falls on the land owner. Most can't afford the cleanup costs.

I was once walking along a stream in a valley which was a natural beauty spot.a builder had tipped wagon loads of rubble plasterboard and rubbish over a stone wall at the top of the valley which ran down into the steam about 50 metres below. Anyone caught fly tipping should face jail time scum of the earth.

Most of the crap dumped by fly tippers can actually be processed by recycling centres - maybe for a small fee . So these people blight the landscape and then we have to go around clearing up after them because they wish to save a couple of quid . They can't be bothered ( or have been banned from ) a trip to the council tip .
"a couple of quid" if only it was cheap to get rid of general waste. 25 quid for a mattress,25 for fridge's,general waste £160 for 850kg. It's really expensive

if its road worthy, sell the van to a legit business, charge them for the clean up and take their driving licence away

If the van is in a salvageable condition sell it reclaim funds, crushing it will only cost money ontop of removing the garbage from it. A legitimate business could make perfect use of that van. Confiscate and sell.

Should not be crushing perfectly good vehicles, that's flaunting your wealth, comes across just like using a £50 note to light your cigar, it's crass and it alienates people who have to work hard for years to own a vehicle.
Give the vehicles to the people who report the fly-tippers, create a reward system and the people will do the work to eliminate fly-tipping. If there was a chance of a free van in it for me I'd have cameras hidden at local hot-spots and be eager to work with the authorities in catching fly-tippers, and I know I am far from alone in that sentiment.

I pass that country park regularly, the eyesore stayed there for quite a long time before the vehicle was set on fire and the whole mess was eventually cleared up...
