Backlash compensation will help for many types of cuts. The type of cut that it most likely won't help with is cutting a circle. The cutting forces will move the head around in the backlash, so you will most likely get a slight irregularity on one of the quadrants. I can't really see any disadvantage to using backlash compensation. Your cuts will be closer to the right spot than if you don't use it. For many cuts having a tolerance on the size that's bigger than the backlash is more than acceptable. If I'm going to drill a bunch of holes, I try to position the head so that it's always on the same side of the backlash then the distances between the holes will be as accurate as your leadscrew. So I find its worth making sure you understand backlash, and when its important and when it isn't. climb milling will pull the head to one side of the backlash and convential milling will push the head to the other side. Sometimes you can use that to your knowledge.

Thanks for the tutorial. Some backlash has crept into my machine over the past year and is getting too noticeable to ignore.

The screw is not uniform throughout the range of motion ... software will compensate for it in a linear fashion
