Interesting setup there. I usually go with 140 (64kg) braid then just a 120-150 yard topshot of mono usually over 100#. The main reason I do that is I feel like once that mono stretches on a big fish a time or two it loses it’s effectiveness. From the beach the stretch is magnified with how much drag has to be applied so we switch it out every trip. Bulk spools of good mono is super cheap so I go with the rather safe than sorry method and switch it out often. Great video though I am sure your hands were feeling it!
I just finished spoiling a big shark rod. I used 40lbs mono for backing, then 100lbs braid, then 80lbs mono, then finished it off with 100lbs braid. Thank you for the knot, much better than the double clinch. All by hand. Everything is incredibly tight.
Doing the old flip flop i see! Load it up with braid then put 300y of mono on top and end it there. It will prob fish better. You lost all the good characteristics of mono once you tie braid on top of that
I take a long wood screw & flat fender washers. Screw your line spool to a fence post or anything thats permanent with a washer on each side. Then simply tighten the screw up to act as drag tighten it down to your preference of resistance and wind away goes on nice & tight that way takes very lil time & effort. Can also hook a drill onto handle shaft to wind it on that way for big reels👌.
I also just got an old 4/0 senator, I loaded mine with 80 lb braid main and 80 lb mono on top of that. Seeing this video, I assume that would be a good poundage for the smaller reel.
Hey Robert, many like to place mono backing because it stretches on the spool and prevents slippage. If you tape your braid correctly it's not necessary. I like to use mono top shot for sharks because it is abrasion resistant.
Robert Tinker if you put the mono on first and braid second when your fishing and you get down to the mono it will snap because the braid is stronger than the mono
First - tape the spool and tie braid over the tape onto spool.... If you get close to the backing , having no knot isn't going to cut it. I always tape and then tie a knot over the tape.... to have a knot onto the spool is vital.
You should learn the FG knot for tying braid ti mono it’s a lot stronger than the knot you used. The knot you used will break at the loop in the mono in the knot
That is one heck of a man reel. This is for the big boys. No fooli'n around . This means some serious off shore business buddies. I saw one of these in an antique store down the block. I am starting to get psyched about picking it up. It's got some corrosion but should clean up well. I think I am getting the call of the sea . I better answer before I am gone . hahahaha. See you soon Mr. Tuna spoon hehehehe :-) . P.S. The guy who I will buy the reel from actually fished with Frank Mundus ( the character model for quint in the movie Jaws). So this reel is going to have some serious Mojo on it. I can hear Frank saying to me now in spirit . " Keep your fingers and hands away from the line when It starts smoki'n or you may come home that day with a few less fingers . No joke .
Hey got a question. Right now i fish and with the gear i have i can bring in 3-4 foot bull sharks all day. But there are bigger ones out because i have hooked into them but cant get them in. What would you recommend for bringing 6-7 footers on a budget. Also we have more the bulls, we have makos, blue, thrasher, and blacktip here as well.
I agree the senator 6/0 is a great option and the senators are as good as it gets for the price. At Academy sports where I live (Florida) just had the senator combos on sale for father's day and they were only 140-150 bucks.. And the senator rods, that it comes with, is actually a very tuff rod. I've had a couple different senator setups now and they really are great. In my opinion all of Penn's products are exceptional, especially for the price.
im gonna go grab some mono and braid and try these line to line knots, if i dont do very well when i buy a senator then ill just have my tackle shop spool it for me.
Nice tip. will the black tape hack work in a spinning reel also? do you have to guide the line when fighting a fish with that style reel? Keep em coming!!
Thanks 4 the video....what kind of rod do you reccomend for that reel...getting serious about deep sea fishing in Galveston....beach and boat....not a very seasoned fisherman...mostly catfishing in lakes...been on a few trips at the beach...4hr charters etc....my wife caught alot of redfish...all i caught was catfish...lol..need some tips...thanks
If you're fishing Galveston you may like Team Hard Life's channel. He's a Corpus Christi guy, does a lot of LBSF but is the local youtube plug for fishing the Texas Gulf Coast.
Mr. Josh Sir, another good tape for spooling a reel is the white medical "cloth tape" that is used in a lot of sports. Football, boxing, baseball.....etc. If you don't use it for anything else, you can find it in a medical supply store not too expensive AND 1 roll will probably last a lifetime of fishing. I am a little confused with your knot. I was expecting you to turn it around and do the same procedure to the other line you are adding to it. Am I thinking of another knot? LASTLY and you know me, When i saw the SIZE of the reel in your hands, I REALLY thought you were getting Serious about the "sewer fish!!!" lol Take care and Be Well my friend.
Great tip Dino, thanks for taking the time to share. You are probably thinking of a uni knot, this is the Albright, another great option is the FG knot.
trying to spool my new daiwa 8500 with 500 yds of 70 lb braid and then top it off with some mono, problem is I love my local tackle shop but it seems all places near me charge ridiciolous prices for line!! He said it would be $144 (they dont charge for spooling it, thats free) but online I can buy same amount for under $100 of daiwa J braid..which is top of the line or even power pro.
Archery and Outdoors those things are called lugs or harness attachment points. there is one set to put one on a harness while shark fishing, and the other the closest to the rod is for rod clamps. a reel of this size can handle big fish but reel clamps also allow the reel the be clamped on to the rod and it is super strong.
Great vid. How do you keep the line from stacking up in one spot on the spool when you are reeling in a fish? Particularly on the beach since you would have a few hundred yds of line out?
Stupid question I've never understood this why do you always put mono filament line on top of Braided line. Can't you just put all braided line. I have 10/0 fishing reel
hm, I use 100-150lb of dragand you spool the sharkreel with 100lb braid, but of couce I don't fish a senator and I'm always in a harness and even more important tied to a tree, a couple of sandbags or having some buddys holding me, line is 300-500lb, depending on mono or hollow and if I want to paddle out more than 200-300yds, reel is a 20/0 everol
Just a tip of advise next time spool your reel with the line coming off the spool on top not underneath and for spinning reels you lay the spool on its side with the label on top to spool it off the right way
Joshua Taylor hahaha. i was thinking of getting a daiwa bg 8000 and a tsunami trophy surf 12ft. i dont wanna spend so much on something ill barely use throughout the year
Sorry bud good vid but you did the Albright knot wrong when you finishing it make sure the line goes through the loop the same way It came in not trying to hate just telling you so you don't loose any fish because doing it the way you did you loose knot strength
Woooo i use to spool my own conventionals but took too much time haha btw technically you shouldnt be having that usps tray. Thats federal property technically speaking.
pointless to use 100ib braid... 80ib mono leader is weakest point why waste money on 100ib braid when u could put more 80ib braid and gain line capacity.... the leader is going to break off before the braid in this situation.
I know but what im saying is tha the 100ib braid is pointless.leader material should be equal strength if not stronger than the backing. why use 100ib braid when u could use 80ib braid and 80 mono and have equilibrium and gain line capacity increasing odds of landing a bruiser off the beach.
I think you are over thinking it a bit, I use a shock leader and 80lb is plenty sufficient, I will never use 80lbs of drag, therefore technically I could probably put 50 mono on top and be fine. The shark leader should have ample strength and length however.
a shock leader should be stronger than your braid backing.... Im not over thinking it... why use 80ib leader with stronger main line- why not use 80ib braid main line and 80ib mono leader... you would gain capacity and in the event a hammer or tiger grabs that bait u have excess line he can peel off and you save about 50-60$ on braid
I think that only holding on to the line does not get enough tension like that shark you talk about. The line digg into its self and you will have problems. Bad video. Sorry that just my opinion.
Interesting setup there. I usually go with 140 (64kg) braid then just a 120-150 yard topshot of mono usually over 100#. Glad that I can help, thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the info, it is interesting to see how everyone has different ways of spooling their reels.
Yes ma'am.
I take a long wood screw & flat fender washers. Screw your line spool to a fence post or anything thats permanent with a washer on each side. I love your idea with the fence and a couple washers and a long wood screw. That is perfect I will give that a shot my friend
Just bought a classic , 9/0 Senator. Gonna spool it up. Kool video.
Just got an old US made Senator 113h 4/0 for 50 bucks and realized its way different than my Abu 6500 C3. Thanks for the video.
I also just got an old 4/0 senator, I loaded mine with 80 lb braid main and 80 lb mono on top of that. Seeing this video, I assume that would be a good poundage for the smaller reel.
Good looking Case Russlock.
My old trusty
Why not tie off on the spool, then take it, or tape first, tie and tape over? I dont trust just tape for my pressure on reel.
Got my first conventional reel. Thanks for the info
I've seen it done just the opposite with mono first then braid on top. What's the advantage of either method?
Hey Robert, many like to place mono backing because it stretches on the spool and prevents slippage. If you tape your braid correctly it's not necessary. I like to use mono top shot for sharks because it is abrasion resistant.
braids expensive I woulda just went all mono especially on the beach
Robert Tinker if you put the mono on first and braid second when your fishing and you get down to the mono it will snap because the braid is stronger than the mono
Keep up the vids Josh they are interesting and informative. I can't wait to see u post some shark vids.
I plan to get out there this weekend on the beach and do some sharking, stay tuned!
Great video man! This really helped me with spooling up my own reel
Glad to help Joey
great video looking forward to some shark fishing videos
Me too Alex, they are coming soon!

Sweet video! Can't wait to hear that reel screaming! 💯😏
You and me both!
You should learn the FG knot for tying braid ti mono it’s a lot stronger than the knot you used. The knot you used will break at the loop in the mono in the knot
Very cool buddy! Hopefully we can go after some of the Big Ones when we get down there
Absolutely!
another great video! Thanks for making it!
You're welcome!
Very professionally done,to the point. Tight Lines Captain. John in N.C.
Is it okay to tie the braid on,then wrap the tape?,this is for an 80 International

Hi, will this setup also work for trolling? Tuna and Mahi Mahi to be specific.
thank you
Thanks for the video, very informative.
You are welcome Deana, thanks for watching.
Thanks for the tips!
You're welcome
thanks; very informative
You can also use light mono to keep braid from slipping. Little more work though, great vid
Very true!
In your opinion, do you think the Penn Senator Combo conventional (91332 model) is a good set up for shark fishing?
I think I'll stay with smaller fish for now. Fat guy + kayak + shark = not fun.
Great video though
Chris, it could make for one heck of an entertaining video lol.
😂😂😂
Great vid brother! Thx for sharing!
You are welcome, glad to help.

I would look into the Penn 6/0 combos with the senator rods, great starter combo that will work.
I agree the senator 6/0 is a great option and the senators are as good as it gets for the price. Yes it will Big O. All my spinning outfits are backed with electrical tape.
It will but for some reason I'm always inclined to put a small amount of mono backing on the spool.
Big O! I use blue painter's tape it works a lot better but yes it does help with the braids I've done it with my bass fishing reels for years
Oi big yes it will
Any tips I’m looking for one
How do you put on the rod clamps without the screws coming out ?
what kind of rod do you have it on in the intro
1 yr later he still never answered ur question
2 yrs later he still never answered ur question
Use a modified san Diego jam knot. No need for the tape.

Nice vid 👍
Thank you Flubby, I think of the movie flubber every time I see your YT name!
We're did you buy the 100lb spider wire fishing line
amzn.to/2zoLyZT and BP Shops.

Is it safe using tape because the water can sit under the tape and the reel will begin to corrode
I have never had this issue and I have been fishing for 25 years.
How come you don't wet your braid first?
Would all braid work?
It would but I like the top shot because of the abrasion resistance. I would at least splice a 20 yard top shot onto the reel.
Salty Scales thank you for the help
The knot I use is the FG knot its stronger and it moves through the eyes better
We use the FG knot quite a bit as well, great knot.

The shops can be pricey but they do put it on the with the machine which is nice. You usually get quite a bit more line when you do it yourself also.
Joshua Taylor dk you think a penn senator 14/0 I's a good beginner reel for sharking ?
Excellent video, I'm researching shark surf fishing n this answered multiple questions. Thanks for posting n damn I like that Penn 9/0!!!
Glad to have helped, please hit the subscribe button for more great content to come.
What was the rod for this?
I use blue painter's tape it works a lot better even when it gets wet it still sticks
What rod is it on?
This is just an old school Penn Senator.
Can anyone tell me what the carabineers attached to the rod and the reel are for and what that is called? Thank you.
That makes sense. Thank you for the detailed reply. I appreciate it.
I think im.gonna set mine up like that, I was thinking 100 lb mono
Great video can u cast that bigger rod
I could but not very far, they really aren't meant for casting.
That's what I was thinking!! Thanks for responding
Great vid. How do you keep the line from stacking up in one spot on the spool when you are reeling in a fish? Particularly on the beach since you would have a few hundred yds of line out?
Once you get used to them, it becomes natural to guide the line on as you crank.
I like to use hollow core
+Richard Kilmer Hollow core is a great option.
I’ve never owned a reel without a guid to keep the line even how do you keep it even when reeling in a fish?
You have to guide it with your hand. It's difficult to do at first.
Is that 100lb diameter or 100lb test?
100lb test
Bc I have a 1000 yard spool of 100 pound braid
All American Fishing you don need a 1000yards Alf braid.
Stupid question I've never understood this why do you always put mono filament line on top of Braided line. Can't you just put all braided line. I have 10/0 fishing reel

+Ashley Cross Thanks for the tip but I've never had an issue.
i wanna try beach sharking
It's fun but relaxing...Until you get a bite that is.
Joshua Taylor hahaha. i was thinking of getting a daiwa bg 8000 and a tsunami trophy surf 12ft. i dont wanna spend so much on something ill barely use throughout the year
"utilize"? LMBAO!!!
You should always tie a good knot at the tape in case you get spooled
Jacob P If you are spooled, no knot is going to stop the fish bud.
Joshua Taylor you can turn the fish . It's happened to me before
Nothing is impossible, just like the saying goes. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally.
I thought you where putting mono first then braid... why you did the other way??
Abrasion resistant in the sand and anything on the bottom plus having stretch helps tremendously for a stationary angoer!.
I don’t know id trust electrical tape on its own to hold up against a major fish on the line
Wait...so when reeling back in a fish, do you still have to guide the line on the reel?
It's a good practice. Once you do it a few times it becomes natural.
Joshua Taylor are there any conventional reels that spools like a spinning reel? Much rather start off with those and progress to one like yours
I know there are some level wind reels made by Penn and Okuma, check them out.
shoulda done an fg
Why mono and braid
To bad you did not show or say in which direction the line should come off the package reel and onto fishing reel. -tim
Using a box that is "property of US postal service" 😆
That is what they give you when you spend 50k or more in shipping per year with them. ;)
I would NOT just use tape to hold down that braid on the spool.. Put tape around then spool then tie a knot to hold it down
Why 2 kinds of line?
Sorry bud good vid but you did the Albright knot wrong when you finishing it make sure the line goes through the loop the same way It came in not trying to hate just telling you so you don't loose any fish because doing it the way you did you loose knot strength
I swear I thought I was the only one who noticed that. Albright is a shitty knot anyway IMHO.
Woooo i use to spool my own conventionals but took too much time haha btw technically you shouldnt be having that usps tray. Thats federal property technically speaking.
They give them to us to use for our volume of shipments. 😎

Stop dragging your words
Bite me lol
Jk bro chill
WTF are you doing?! that's the roughest method of spooling I have seen.
Then make a better video and stop your baby crying. 👍
