@@philparis796 certainly. As he says, that’s why he’s went this direction with it. The problem it seems to create though is that the dragon apparently *moderates* those powers-able to turn them off at a whim?
If the dragon actively bestows them like a power plant instead of *causing* them via a one-time change (like a radioactive spider bite), doesn’t that change the way bloodline sorcerers work throughout the world? Doesn’t it also control your decisions related to the mafia dragon? I’ve never played warlock, but how could you ever go against your dragon/power source without LOSING YOUR CLASS? Dragons boss wants you to do something unethical, but you still want to be a sorcerer… Doesn’t seem like much of a choice!
In general, I like this idea a lot, but I think I’d need to answer these questions before considering it done.

A power that can be taken away seems more warlock or cleric-ish, Sorcery's flavor is that the power is inherent to the user themselves, either through heritage or through being changed by some by a major magical exposure event. This episode's new dragon seems more like a warlock patron with the way you describe it and it's relation to it's horde members.

Technically a Warlock pact is a mix between A Wizard and A Cleric. In the players handbook the Relationship between a Warlock and their patron as something more akin to a student mentor relationship.
Additionally the difference between A Warlock and a Cleric is The magic they use.
A Cleric is a Divine Caster
A warlock is an Arcane caster
Divine Casters use magic that is Given to them, hence why they can Change their spell list after a long rest
And arcane casters are people who LEARN their magic hence why it takes leveling up to change spells.
A God can Take away both your Cleric spells and your cleric features features
A warlock patron can take away your warlock features but not your warlock spells or Invocations.
(Spells because you had to LEARN those spells by them teaching you,
Invocations for the same reason. invocations are described as you studying Occult lore)

That lends them rarity and a sense of awe, as well as urgency. Like the “if you’re killed in the Avatar state, than the reincarnation cycle will be broken, and the Avatar will cease to exist.”
So the Warden Dragons have a desperate need to choose that Prince and preserve their essence because once it’s gone from the world, it’s gone forever.

I’m now convinced that pointy hat simply doesn’t like reptiles. He redesigns all his dragons to be very non reptilian looking. The only reptilian race he talked about was Dragonborn (because they’re a core race in 5th edition is my assumption) and the twist he gave them was turning them into humans with bits of dragon parts attached to them, so very non reptilian. In his Dragons are BAD video he called dragons big flying lizards and said that’s fine for people who like that sort of look. Which leads me to believe he doesn’t like reptiles or consider them pretty enough to be aesthetically pleasing to make characters. Pointy hat hates reptiles, that’s my takeaway from all this and it saddens me since I love reptiles so much and half the characters I’ve created are Dragonborn or lizard people or snake people.

Green Dragons USED to have cool spell-like abilities for manipulating both plants and people (they had Charm Person AT WILL), and could camouflage themselves in woodlands. They lost ALL of those traits while coming over to 5e. Dragons got NERFED. Edit: And apparently there's a variant ruleset that gives Dragons innate spellcasting IN the Monster Manual.

Okay, now I'm obsessed with the idea of a nanny dragon running an orphanage. Just imagine: the kids grow up and leave the building they grew up in, but never truly leave their Family. They might take up adventuring, but they always come back as often as they can, bringing back their earnings, their tales and maybe other orphans they met along the way. With time, the orphanage at the end of the small town grows into a town in it's own right as more and more children grow up and start a life near their true Home. When they start a family of their own, any child born is then entrusted to the Archon's Daycare together with the orphans. It could be a great backstory, maybe starting the adventuring job at the request of your Archon Nanny, looking for more people for the Hoard. A rare happy and fluffy reason to go out and risk your life XD

I forgot to post this on your other dragon video but since you mentioned that dragons don’t have a lot of non-combat related stuff so I thought I’d give some options for some
    •White dragons
    - They are functionally animals so unlike other dragons they might have a secondary (Beast) type which- is an old concept but could work. Anyway, this type would allow them to be reasoned with with speak to animals as they may be too primitive for draconic and may allow higher level Druids to wild-shape into them
-Giants might ask to hunt them and vice versa
-Smarter white dragons may like hunting for sport and could even welcome some people they see as honorable along to their hunts
-The more bestial ones that are reasoned with could still ask for adventurers to guard their eggs or go out to get supplies for their nest
    •Black dragons
-They are really hard to think of non-combat ideas for… the only one I can think of is that a party could help calm down a Hag and Black Dragon in some truce that, if it goes south, might level the whole swamp and the villages near it
    •Green dragon
-They collect people to use as tools to further their (political/territorial) power for their own gain and are machiavellians
-If the party meets the green dragon’s interest they could exchange a deal for some item or favor from the dragon in return for the dragon calling them for a favor (whether it be to further their power through blackmail or assassination or something else is left to the dragon’s whim)
-As long as a town can meet ends meet or meet some untold price to the green dragon they may receive protection and could trade goods with the green dragon’s syndicate

-They seem to be obsessed with magic items but they also seem to let their slaves trade with others so maybe they run black markets and underground casinos in deserts
-If the previous idea works they could barter to give/get magic items from a party or may play a game with a wager with them to get something. Due to their pride they refuse to cheat
    •Red Dragon
-They are obsessed with news and knowing information of neighboring kingdoms (seems more like a Green Dragon thing but okay) so they could request the party for espionage or for the latest gossip
-Their request for info might be strategic but maybe red dragons are just really passionate and love listening to humanoid quarrels like it’s a soap opera (which reminds me of Alastor for some reason)

6:59 I went to the ancient green dragon page in dnd beyond and found these two lair actions
Grasping roots and vines erupt in a 20-foot radius centered on a point on the ground that the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. That area becomes difficult terrain, and each creature there must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be restrained by the roots and vines. A creature can be freed if it or another creature takes an action to make a DC 15 Strength check and succeeds. The roots and vines wilt away when the dragon uses this lair action again or when the dragon dies.
A wall of tangled brush bristling with thorns springs into existence on a solid surface within 120 feet of the dragon. The wall is up to 60 feet long, 10 feet high, and 5 feet thick, and it blocks line of sight. When the wall appears, each creature in its area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. A creature that fails the save takes 18 (4d8) piercing damage and is pushed 5 feet out of the wall’s space, appearing on whichever side of the wall it wants. A creature can move through the wall, albeit slowly and painfully. For every 1 foot a creature travels through the wall, it must spend 4 feet of movement. Furthermore, a creature in the wall’s space must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw once each round it’s in contact with the wall, taking 18 (4d8) piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Each 10-foot section of wall has AC 5, 15 hit points, vulnerability to fire damage, resistance to bludgeoning and piercing damage, and immunity to psychic damage. The wall sinks back into the ground when the dragon uses this lair action again or when the dragon dies.

There's also two of the Regional Effects:
      • Thickets form labyrinthine passages within 1 mile of the dragon’s lair. The thickets act as 10-foot-high, 10-foot-thick walls that block line of sight. Creatures can move through the thickets, with every 1 foot a creature moves costing it 4 feet of movement. A creature in the thickets must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw once each round it’s in contact with the thickets or take 3 (1d6) piercing damage from thorns.
Each 10-foot-cube of thickets has AC 5, 30 hit points, resistance to bludgeoning and piercing damage, vulnerability to fire damage, and immunity to psychic and thunder damage.
      • Within 1 mile of its lair, the dragon leaves no physical evidence of its passage unless it wishes to. Tracking it there is impossible except by magical means. In addition, it ignores movement impediments and damage from plants in this area that are neither magical nor creatures, including the thickets described above. The plants remove themselves from the dragon’s path.
Honestly, I have no idea why he didn't mention any of these. Although they're not in the statblock itself, they are still something the dragon can do.
I personally think these are pretty cool even if they're a bit simple for a "legendary creature" that a dragon is supposed to be.

Woo! I’m so here for this series!
The very first story I ever remember hearing was one my mom told me about a dragon. It started with the typical village being occasionally lightly singed by the typical dragon, as is typical. So the typical king sent a typical knight to go slay the dragon. But when the knight got there, he found not an entitled, imposing monster, but instead he found the dragon crying. All he ever wanted was to have friends, he was tired of living alone in his cave. But he couldn’t stop breathing fire, it was like a medical thing. So the knight, realizing this was no monster, decided to solve both problems at once. He sat down and offered to be the dragon’s friend.
I’ve loved dragons ever since. To me, personally, they represent friendship and the good that can be found in almost anyone, no matter how misunderstood.
I always appreciate it in stories when dragons are depicted as people. If they’re evil, it’s not by nature, but by choice. Fighting a villainous dragon isn’t a sad story of a wild animal that needs to be put down, it’s a struggle against a monster who chose to do the evil they did. And on the other hand, approaching a dragon could be done to seek, or even offer, help to someone who can chose to do good. And often has the power to do great good, if only they choose to.

I feel like this is more of a Warlock dragon. Since it bestows powers to those who join its family (make a deal with it), and is capable of taking that power back if they leave the family (break the deal). While sorcery is either a birthright, or an exposure to something that fundamentally changes their nature, and can't just be taken back by whatever gave them the power.

Warlock dragon tap into an unknown link between the dragon and the warlock, with the dragon being unable to manifest to anyone but the linked person, thus making them appear to be a more powerful force themselves but really just a puppet for the real dragon. Sort of taking from the cult of personality mindset that many cults have, only to reveal to the warlock "Oh I really did make a deal with a greater power" but no one else can know about it directly, and maybe even having the dragon by default appear as the pact item, so familiar has the dragon as a small pseudo dragon, blade has the dragon form a draconic shard, and tome has one of those books with a face on it that talks. This all in turn means the dragon must form their hoard indirectly through a select few followers expected to bring in new cultists, and it eventually becomes a pyramid scheme of followers all serving the dragon without knowing they're serving the dragon

It would be cool if being in close proximity to the Archon Dragon is what grants the sorcerous power. Those closest to the Archon (the inner circle) almost always become sorcerers, but even those with minimal contact can still pick up sorcerous powers. The syndicate keeps a close eye on all who are exposed to the Archon, and ruthlessly eliminates anyone whom they perceived as a threat, thus controlling the flow of the power. The Archon can't cut off the sorcerer's power (that's more of a warlock thing), but if you betray the family you'll get "Il bacio della morte".

I mean, there's even a CHOICE in the matter, the very specific thing you mentioned is necessary for telling the difference between warlocks and sorcerers.
Simple solution would be to do like mafia and have a turf. Everyone who dwells in the turf becomes part of the hord whether they like it or not, and most can't understand or even control the power without joining the syndicate. Maybe even say it can go out of control without the dragon consistently balancing their magic.
The will of the dragon and concent of the person wouldn't be necessary for gaining or losing powers, just like it isn't for a sorcerer generally

Your idea of the archon dragon reminded me of the Dungeon Dad’s reimagining (not sure if that is the correct term) of purple dragons for the newest addition. The most noticeable difference besides one being chromatic and the other not being chromatic is that the purple dragon keeps ties with their parents even after adulthood. Additionally with an idea of the purple dragons running guilds, that came from that video, makes a purple dragon crime family that runs stuff behind the scenes a very believable norm for purple dragon families.

If and when you decide to do the lich for the warlock class, my suggestion would be to have it as though the one becoming the lich has to usurp power from their patron. Normally a patron and a warlock both agree to be in a pact, or the patron has the upper hand, but in this case the warlock has gotten strong enough to tip the scales. Perhaps they are leaching power from their patron through a ritual, or they found their patron’s true name and have bound it to serve them. In this case, the liches soul is bound within their patron somehow. The lich would have to work constantly to prevent the patron from escaping.
This was the best I could think of, if anyone has feedback please tell

Warlocks do not get their powers revoked upon a falling out with their patron. Clerics are tithed to their deity, hence they lose all powers upon abandonment. Paladins become oathbreakers when deviating from their current oath.

    Ok hear me out-
Barbarian dragon that looks like a bear, their followers are referred to as their "blooded" because each one has to wound their dragon and drink of their blood to join the blooded. This draconic blood inside them allows them to rage like a path of the beast barbarian except instead of transforming to be beastly during rage, they gain draconic features. On the inverse, the idea is that each of their blooded's rages enhances the dragon's own rage. Their hoard is a wild and barely hanging together group of warriors each trying to prove themselves to their dragon, some hoards are actively competitive and actively fight each other (sometimes to death) to gain favour while others function as cohesive units winning wars for favour. The dragon's statblock would include things like rage, an empowered rage for being with their hoard, and maybe even one last rage that lets them get an extra turn after death where they become full feral. Otherwise it should include things like reckless attack and the roar should force wisdom saves so as to not be terrified. They should be tankier and more physically powerful than other dragons but note that their usage of magic is quite crude compared to other dragons.

tbh, by the way the Archon Dragons create syndicates and give and take away power, they sound more like that of a Warlock Dragon rather than a Sorcerer Dragon.
I imagine Sorcerer Dragons being almost magic anomalies. They cause magic wherever they go and can't exactly control it, forming guilds to either use their powers for some sort of good (perhaps by undoing the chaotic effects they cause), or creating more chaos.
Cities will develop weird anomalies, but as they do, more people awaken to power..
Perhaps these Sorcerer Dragons share their magic because if they don't, the concentrated magic they constantly build will become too overwhelming, so they are FORCED to do this to prevent great explosions of magic (Sort of Gale from BG3 style maybe). The truly sadistic build this magic, and those who become to upset with life have been known to deliberately destroy themselves in their later lives, choosing to take out mass amounts of population in a kamikaze explosion, rather than die peacefully. After all, if you've only got a year left, why not?
Those who are good would do so for a sense of greater self, a great magical explosion will ruin a lot of lives, but those who are more selfish do so for more self-preservation. Doing their best to attempt to regulate the amount they exude, and find a balance between letting out enough magic into the world, but not enough that it destroys them or makes someone too powerful.
The communities of these Sorcerer Dragons are less so organised societies, but more a ramshackle group, thrown together by luck, as people who awaken to the Sorcerer Dragon's natural exuding magic, and thus its just as easy to find someone willing to abuse it as it is to find someone trying to use their powers for good.
A prince is not chosen by a Sorcerer Dragon, and its just whomsoever gets the most lucky, gets the most power from the Sorcerer Dragon, and so a Sorcerer Dragon spends much of their time monitoring the current pool of strongest, so they can find one who is the most suitable. If they can't.. Well, the Sorcerer Dragon cannot control it, and has to take actions into their own claws..
As might a rival. For if the current candidate dies, then the crown falls to the next strongest, and the next and the next. In some cabals, this creates a hierarchy of power, in others this makes the cabal a bloodthirsty and backstabbing place, and in others, this difference in power is a challenge, with each member striving to overcome and become the most powerful, magically, so they may rise to the top of the ranks.
Luck is the name of the game with these dragons, as is it luck who and when someone becomes a sorcerer. You could get unlucky and be bound to a dragon who cares only for its own survival, get unlucky and be an unsuitable candidate for prince despite your incredible strength, unlucky in that your specific tie and amount you have is weaker than others, be unlucky enough to have a serial killer or a rival be a part of your cabal.
Just as it is in luck you might be the strongest and most suitable candidate, with a being that exudes magic guiding and teaching you to control, understand and grow your power.

So there's no reason for me to be impatient for now. But I get that other people might want to run this sooner.

honestly bear dragons would be a really good fit for paladins since they lost lions to sorcerers.

I actually had a concept for a bard themed warden dragon that takes on features of a parrot, and actually attracts people using its singing voice (which also incorporates the various sounds it heard that it reproduces through mimicry).

I'd give my life for the Family if I could have even a fraction of this -guy's- hat's creativity, goddamn. Also, as someone who finds sorcerers, especially draconic sorcerers, really boring- inspiring me to want to play one is nothing short of impressive. Love this channel so much.

The video is really cool, but once again I’m surprised that you consider 5E dragons not varied, there’s soooo much you can do with each of them with the monster manual only, let alone with Fizban’s! It’s just weird, I feel like I read a different monster manual than you 😂
That being said, this is a super cool series, I’m curious to see the others

I agree. He makes the dragons sound so boring, but honestly, you could make these Arcon Dragons easily with the existing ones. Blue Dragons are perfect for mafia bosses, and Gold, Silver, and Bronze dragons love to lead organizations of righteous humanoids.

As my New Year's resolution, I want to try and praise the content creators I enjoy. Pointy Hat, this was yet another amazing video from you. It's apparent that a lot of work has gone into your creations. They're compelling, and more importantly, useable at the table. Any table at all. In fact, I've already got a plot for my Tuesday night game that uses the lore of the Vigil, adjusted to fit into the area of the world my group is exploring. To keep it brief, you don't get a divinely appointed bodyguard without people assuming you're some sort of god-king. But, back to the warden dragons, given the nature of the Archon Dragon, I'm really curious to see what you cook up for Rogues.
But most of all, Thank You for what you do. For ALL you do.

Dude your videos have inspired me to make a campaign with some of your entities that you have created! The concepts you come up with have changed the way I see D&D in amazing ways. Keep up the amazing work! I have a interesting challenge for you, Can you make a Fighter Lich? Either a basic class fighter or even a subclass from fighter that gives them spell casting? So they can achieve this?

Two dragon videos in 3 weeks? Who hurt you, mr. Pointy hat? 😢But seriously, it is extremely helpful and inspiring for my campaign, which features dragons quite heavily. The standard D&D lore makes me want to claw my eyes out, make them a soul tupperware and become an evil sexy lamp in my lair so I don't have to deal with uwu good Bahamut or big bad evil Tiamat. It is nice to have some fresh perspective, I am trying to say.

I'm super jazzed to see the druid dragon NOT have the hoard of Animals, but the Ranger one does, and it's all the most Apex Predators of its "Favored Terrain".
The druid dragon just keeps potted plants... or weather phenomenon.

Dude, if I volcano suddenly pops up in a farming village, the entire community is going to change dragon change the world by being a big Godzilla monster, because either people don’t want the big Godzilla monster, or the big Godzilla monster makes everyone change around you don’t need to have a warden go “ I like this human. I’m gonna keep them as a pet.” You could just have people go oh shit, there’s a giant volcano that wasn’t there yesterday and it’s getting way too hot to live. We should hire some videos to go kill the thing.

Both Dragons are amazing for worldbuilding. I want to run a campaign where a cataclysm destroyed the world and the only cities that survived where the ones with a warden. And even though this communities are amicable with each other, the are rivals for the only resource that they want... People. That would make it like factions trying to convince the PCs to join them.
Bro, every video you make is a source of inspiration for me. Thank you so much.

Something for after my characters finish their wanderings through the tumerous 0G supercomputer, fight off an army of illagers, and discover hibernating slivers.
Tumerous 0G Supercomputer - inspired by Rain World
    Illagers - inspired by Minecraft
Slivers - inspired by Magic the Gathering
("inspired" as in adapted into D&D and altered lorewise and mechanically to fit into my particular campaign.)

one of my favorite parts about this series already is that it has basically infinite variety for heavy homebrew class users like myself. at the end of the series i would love to see a document for the basic ideas that go to archon dragons mechanically so we can basically make an archon dragon for any conceivable homebrew class.

These warden dragons are such an interesting idea. I have never liked how typical D&D dragons barely stray from the almost inactive obstacle boss monster in a distant lair.
It's a lot more fun seeing players' shocked expressions upon seeing a dragon doing something mundane in a city like just buying goods from the market. The game feels more fantastic when any sapient creatures act like people, not just objectives.

I think that a ram or goat would have been a better animal for this, especially since they get called nanny dragons, but I can still see a really cool dynamic being presented with two lion-dragons.
I imagine these guys are more prone to darker colors than the holier, paladin-oriented ones, and there’s definitely something to be said about the visuals of a big, glowing golden lion-dragon fighting an imposing black one. You can even change things up a bit by having the paladins be effectively the inquisition who use violence to make everyone catholic, and their arch enemy is this enormous shadowy beast that is actually keeping orphans and outcasts from getting lynched by zealots. Could be really cool.
