So the stairs in the woods are probably based off of the many stories from hikers and park rangers about never going up stairs in the woods because you'll go missing. It's a kind of urban legend.

The stairs in the woods are likely in reference to a popular creepy pasta trope about staircases in the woods. The reoccurring note they all follow is that no one ever talks about them, and if anyone asks about them to someone else they always tell them both not to talk about them but also not to climb them, ever.
There's a whole series of pastas about a park ranger and the stairs are the crux of that storyline.

They could have done made the stairs even creepier. The way alot of the urban legends go is that when someone climbs to the top the forest suddenly falls completely silent. The moment they take a step down from the top day turns to night and that's usually when they describe noticing anyone they came with is gone.

Staircase in the woods is mostly likely a nod toward an older CreepyPasta detailing random staircases being found in wooded areas. If I'm remembering the details correctly, ascending the staircase is said to bring about misfortune and even death, but not necessarily to the one who climbed the stairs, it affects other people who are also roaming the forest.

I’m so glad I can answer one of these lol. If memory severs, apparently in some woods somewhere, you can find random stairs leading up and to no where. There’s all different types of stairs, from stone to wood, medieval to modern etc and if you were to go up them, you’d die in various different way. As you make your way up the stairs, you could see things/be transported to another world, but if someone was watching you from the ground, they would just see you going up as normal (I think). It’s either on r/no sleep or a creepypasta, but I’m pretty sure corpse, before they played games on their channel, (or another RUclipsr I can’t remember) covered it in a forest rescue series. It wasn’t just stairs that happened too, a lot of interesting things went on. Definitely recommend if you can find the videos.

The last Easter egg (the random stairs) is based on a story read by many creepy RUclipsrs (like Mr nightmare or corpse husband). One of the most famous 4chan "stairs in the wilderness" stories is two friends hiking and coming across a staircase carved into the rock near a path they've been walking. They then here a woman's voice weakly calling for help up the staircase. The friend surges up the stairs while the story teller lags behind. He hears his friend talking reassuringly to someone before hearing him scream. It's described as a bone chilling sound filled with pain and fear. The story teller then _RUNS_ as fast as they can away and takes a single look back and they see a hunched figure standing at the top of the stairs. Once they get back to the trail parking lot, they come across an old man who ask him what happened. When the story teller says what happened, the old man frowns, shakes his head and returns to his truck and retrieves his gun. He looks at the story teller and tells him "I'm sorry for your lose" before disappearing onto the trail. The next day, there's a story about an unfortunate hiker who was mauled to death by a bear and that the bear was killed by a local hunter.
    Tl:dr
Finding stairs that don't belong in the wild is bad news. Climbing to the top of them may be the last thing you do.

Plenty of other people have explained the creepypasta/urban legend origins of the staircase in the woods. But I would just like to add some extra context. If you do find a staircase in the woods, most likely it'll be leading up into a tree (not that far up though, only a couple feet). Look up into the tree and you'll most likely find what's known as a deer blind. Hunters will build the staircase to help them get up into their deer blind when they're out trying to assassina-*cough* *cough* I mean hunt deer.

There are staircases to nowhere all over the place in seemingly random locations and the tale, as I heard it, was that if you travel up the staircase in the dusk sun then you could be "transported" from this reality to another. The Sarah Connor gun coffin is a direct reference to T3. In the film they go to a crypt to find her coffin and it turns out to be a weapons stash filled to the brim with guns. As for the stairs in the woods, it's become somewhat of an urban legend but most people have likely heard of them due to their inclusion in a large number of popular online horror stories or "creepy pastas" such "My Property isn't Normal" and "I'm a Search and Rescue Officer for the US Forest Service, I Have Some Stories to Tell" to name a couple stand outs and if I recall they even get a nod in the AMAZING creepypasta/book series, "Tales from the Gas Station". The stairs show up and disappear in the woods at random, usually completely clean, and are known to cause bad things to happen when people go up them, anything from a losing all your toenails, a sudden brain hemorrhage, or even someone disappearing without a trace, never to be found again.

The red snake for the T. Anderson Coffin might be a metaphor for the Red Pill that Anderson takes while the snake is referring to him "going down the rabbit hole" as a reference to what Morpheus told Mr. Anderson ("Take the Red Pill and see how far the rabbit hole goes."). Got to this conclusion as snakes often go down burrow holes made by other animals and uses them as shelters, most of them being rabbit holes. Dunno if this was their intent for the developers, but considering the Matrix trilogy is rife with metaphors, this could be one as well.

So heres my story of stairs i found.
My sister and i were going to hike across the Aokigahara forest. Yes, suicide forest. We could do it in a single day if we tried. But we wanted to spend a night.
The destination was from Camp Akaike north of the Mt. Fuji to Grinpa, south of Fuji.
We took the south bend as it was closer.
We informed everyone what we were doing. It was a fun camping and sight seeing trip. No questions on why it was just my twin and i. >.>
But it was a good change up as we were usually stuck around the family housing of Kadena.
We started at 9am, in late November when it was a bit too cold for insects and spiders.
So about … well idfk. We walked for about 8 hours on and off trails. Took a break every hour. But wile traveling southwards, i kept in mind the sound of birds and the tree brush. This was mostly because birds get worked up when something around bothers them. As birds do.
But wile hiking, you enter kind of a drone mode when your just keep doing the same fucking thing over and over, i think its the body saving energy or something.
So before i knew it the sun was overhead and it was noticeable as i came to a small patch that was cleared, just no growth but fauna. I walked into the clearing as i saw something that looked out of place.
    My sister followed me behind.
I looked back at my sister and was as confused as i was from what we saw.
    A set of concrete stairs.
They had a base. It was like concrete youd see at a inner city government building.
It had FRESHLY looking painted hand rails that went from the top to bottom of the set.
    Only about 9 steps.
And i noticed that the paint was fresh as it had not been color warped by the sun or damaged by weather. Infact, there wasnt a leaf or piece of debris on the stairs or base.
Looking to where the set was leading to, was nothing but a natural drop off or natural curving dip in the terrain covered in leaves and dirt.
I felt hyper aware and a feeling of awkwardness and unease. It was just so out of place and looked so pristine, that it didnt feel right.
Then i noticed, there was no sound.
No birds, no rustling leaves from wind in the trees, just the gentle heat of the sun on my face.
It didnt feel right. Something was wrong. ‘When mother nature gets quiet, you should move along’. A quote that iv held onto from a hunter-safety corse.
My sister and i got back on course. But just after, we checked our time. We somehow lost 4 hours.
Another point that was odd is that we had overcast the entire day. So we couldnt see the sun so we relied on lighting to set up camp.
So a point i wonder to this day… how was my face getting warm off the sunshine if there was overcast?
After our hike that was mostly uneventful from then on. We finished it, got onto a charter 25min flight back to Okinawa. And then a new event.
We set off the base’s radiation sniffer box when walking by it. We were brought in, stripped, washed, tested, and so forth.
Giving our initial explanation, the japanese officials got involved thinking a company was dumping waste into the woods.
Our shoes had to be incinerated, my jacket read up high than background levels, but wasnt harmful, but i offered it up anyway. Cuz fuck that.
I read out to have absorbed my years dose worth of radiation (which isnt much as theres only a month left), my sister a bit less. Nothing was harmful, apparently.
When we told them where it was, the JSDF used a radiation sniffer plane to locate the possible waste dump.
They couldnt find anything. So because of how serious they took this, they put us on a helicopter and flew us around the path we took at a reasonable altitude.
We found the clearing. But no stairs. They detected nothing. We all went home.
My sister and i both still remember this.

In that safe there is a bracelet that you can pick up, when you return to the lady aiden brings up the fact that there were valuables in the safe ( she lets you keep them ). But I’m curious to know if aiden would say anything about the valuables if you don’t take them from the safe, maybe you could find out?
