I can't remember which one of my Valkyries lost its alternator, but I definitely had to replace it. During the search for a replacement, I tried the dealer first. WAY too expensive. Next came a local company that rebuilds automotive alternators and starters. Even though the Valkyrie alternator is a typical Hitachi unit in the back, its non pulley drive means they wouldn't accept it for service. I was only slightly familiar with using the web, but I found a source, which I'm pretty sure is the same one you found. Great price and an excellent replacement unit. Naturally, I ran into the same issues with clearance for the removal and installation. One thing I screwed up was the removal of the charging lead. I took the adapter from the back of the alternator, instead of the wire from the adapter. I found an illustration that shows an easier action of using a long extension to reach down from the battery box and remove the wire from the adapter. I wish I could remember which part I moved to give me the little bit of clearance to install the replacement unit, but it certainly did the trick. I also think that I used a dab of white lithium grease around the sealing surface. All else being equal, it was easier to install than remove.
I agree completely. Removing it without ever having done it before, was the most difficult part. Rplacing it, then I had the knowledge of what goes where at least. I really hope this replacement unit holds up. Do not really want to do this one more time, at least this side of 2030. By the way, is there any video out of your bike =? Thank you for watching and look out for our next vid..
@@CityWalkerProductions ... Sorry, I'm too low tech. I have three Valkyries that are all needing to be returned to riding condition. One needs a bunch of teardown to get the transmission output shaft out. My first needs a tire and carburetor balancing. My '97 is at a friend's house for fuel feed sealing, and he had a tragic situation turn his life into a mess, so I told him to not worry about the bike until he gets back on track. If I had more room, I'd bring that one home and get the carbs out myself. Kind of a crappy situation, but I also have a work situation that is too demanding of my time, putting the bikes on the way back burner. Frustrating as hell.

Nice job! I remember doing mine some time ago. Made a point to install a volt meter as well so I would at least have a clue that the alternator is working properly. You want to go easy with the front tabs on your side covers - they are VERY prone to breakage!
Yes I have suspected that they are brittle. Always try to be gentle. Anyway, I am now focusing on the Illumination video, Installing all kinds of new lighting. Will be fun. Does not seem to be any limit to what we can put onto a Valkyrie :-) Thank you for watching.
If you check the comments under the various Valkyrie video's we have, you can find links to where most of the add-ons were bought. Thank you for watching !
Very helpful. My ‘97 is putting out about 12.5 volts, but with 105,000 miles, can’t complain. I have other bikes so this will be a Winter project that I am not looking forward to.
After doing this twice now, I think I would choose to do this when I make the appointment, not the faulty part. I have been lucky both times. I was very close to home. Would not have enjoyed this if I had been far away... Thank you for watching and more to come about the Valkyrie when time allows.
Nice thank you. Replacement For Honda Valkyrie 1999 ( LR140-708 ) Amazon $51 to $91 - 49 Amps - 634 Watts - 14.3 Volts. update,, after 8 months, Alt still works as new. :)
I'm in the process of reinstalling new alternator on my 2000 Valkyrie. Do you have any suggestions on to line up impeller in slots created by the guides inside where the alternator goes?
Hello there. i remember I just pushed the internal impeller parts into position where they were supposed to be. They did stay in position. Then I carefully guided the alternator into the correct position and aimed carefully. It worked on first attempt. No additional tools or anything else was needed to get the alternator back into its correct position. I started out believing I would need to use grease or something to hold the engine side parts in position. Nothing was needed, just position them and move the alternator carefully afterwards. Good luck. More videos about this Valkyrie will follow later. Thank you for watching.
I did change again now this june. The replacement I bought in the video is junk. When I contacted the company about a new alternator lasting only a year and a half, they instantly showered me with information about 12 months warranty, thy are not responsible etc.. And I did not even ask about replacement or refund. They know they sell crap.. Thank you for watching.
Hello there. They are just called Chrome covers. The spesific name for this on the web page is: Chrome Cover, Frame, Driver Peg, left. They where bought from a compaqny in Germany. As far as I know, there are two such companies in Germany. Unfortunately, they charge extremely high prices for the products they sell. If you need it though, I can link the companies to you. Thank you very much for watching our video's, more will follow !
I might need to do this soon. My Valk died on me today. Put new battery in and made it home. Will do trouble shooting and testing soon. See my bike on my channel. Thanks for posting.
How long did you manage to drive on with a new battery and no alternator? It would be good to know the range if something like this should happen again. Also, it would be fun to see you make a Valkyrie video and use your own original material as music ! Your drum machine might need a little volume adjustment (down) though :-) Thank you very much for watching, hope to see you again!
@@CityWalkerProductions Hi. To answer your question, it was approx 20 miles. By chance could you post a link to the alternator you purchased? I am not sure which one to buy. Thank you.
Funny thing is that the Gold Wing alternator is identical but way less expensive. The only difference is the orientation of the mounting bracket. You have to remove it and spin it around to match the "Valkyrie" mode.
Yes it is much cheaper. And the dealer did do the orientation for me, so when it arrived, it was ready to play. Thank you for watching and more videos will be coming.
Do not be discouraged. If you aim correctly and there is no cables etc in the way, you will succeed. This is one of these weird tasks. It either seems hopeless, then suddenly it just enters..... Most important is the plastic-like pieces you have to line up inside the mounting area. Thank you for watching. More videos with the Valkyrie monster will come later when we have moved house here :_)

Ledt me tell you... The video does not fully show this but it took a long time for me to get the alternator out. I was SO SURE it was not possible until sudddenly i rotated the fans a little bit while twisting and turning the alternator upwards in the back etc. Suddenly it slipped out.. And remember, the alternator from this video failed after 18 months. I did the same thing again. Same hassle but still went out in the end. It is a complicated maneuver but doable. You can do it. Thank you for watching.
Hello. You can get it in and out, but you have to be careful and precise. And move the cables to give it a clear path. Thank you for watching and remember to subscribe for more of the Valkyrie videos later.
